23:18   Maha Cong chief Nana Patole scrapes through in Sakoli, wins by 208 votes

Patole, the incumbent Congress MLA from Sakoli, polled 96,795 votes, while his challenger from BJP, Avinash Brahmankar, came tantalisingly close to bagging 96,587 votes.

Independent nominee Somadatta Karanjekar was a distant third, bagging 18,309 votes.

22:36   Of 20 seats won by Uddhav's Sena, 10 in Mumbai
Ten of the 20 seats the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena-UBT won in the Maharashtra assembly polls, results of which were announced on Saturday, are in Mumbai.

The party had contested 95 seats as part of the Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance but managed to win just 20.

In Mumbai, the Shiv Sena-UBT won in Worli, where its top leader Aaditya Thackeray was contesting, Byculla, Shivadi, Kalina, Dindoshi and Vikhroli.

It also won Versova, Jogeshwari East, Vandre East and Mahim seats.

It won Worli by a narrow margin of 8,801 votes.

In Mahim, it won in a triangular contest involving MNS' Amit Thackeray and Shiv Sena's Sadanand Sarvankar.

The Shiv Sena-UBT won the seat by a of 1,316 votes. Even Versova seat was won by a margin of just 1,600 votes.

After the split in the Shiv Sena in June 2022 following a rebellion by Eknath Shinde, the Shiv Sena-UBT managed to keep its organisation together.

Of the 14 MLAs that stayed with Thackeray, six were from Mumbai.

In the four districts in Konkan that were once Sena-UBT strongholds, namely Thane, Palghar, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg, the party could win only in Guhagar.

In north Maharashtra, where the party won Nashik Lok Sabha seat, the Shiv Sena-UBT failed to win a single of the region's 48 seats.

The party won four seats in Vidarbha --- Wani, Balapur, Daryapur, Mehkar, and three in Marathwada, namely Parbhani, Umarga and Osmanabad.

It won Barshi and Khed Alandi seats in western Maharashtra.   -- PTI

21:51   Cong wins Nanded in recounting, retains LS tally
UPDATE: Congress candidate Ravindra Chavan on Saturday won the Nanded Lok Sabha bypoll defeating his nearest rival Santukrao Hambarde of the Bharatiya Janata Party, an official said.

Chavan, who was seen losing to Hambarde, finally won with a margin of 1,457 votes after the votes were recounted in Nanded. Chavan polled 5,86,788 votes while Hambarde garnered 5,85,331 votes, the official said.

The bypoll was necessitated due to the death of sitting Congress MP Vasant Chavan on August 26. Ravindra Chavan is his son.

Pratap Patil Chikhalikar, who won the 2019 Lok Sabha poll for the Nanded seat as a BJP candidate, had defeated Ashok Chavan who was then with the Congress.

Chikhalikar lost the 2024 Lok Sabha poll from Nanded to Vasant Chavan by more than 59,000 votes.

While Ashok Chavan joined the BJP in February this year, Chikhalikar is now with the Ajit Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party and is contesting the assembly poll from Loha in Nanded, which he has represented twice as an MLA.   -- PTI

21:44   Ashok Chavan's daughter wins big in debut contest
Sreejaya Chavan, daughter of former Maharashtra chief minister Ashok Chavan, won her debut assembly poll contest from Bhokar seat in Nanded district by trouncing Congress rival Tirupati Kadam Kondhekar by 50,551 votes.

Sreejaya's victory cemented the Chavan family's hold over the Bhokar constituency, represented by her grandfather Shankarrao Chavan and parents Ashok Chavan and Ameeta Chavan earlier.

Notably, Ashok Chavan had switched to BJP from Congress earlier this year, following which he was appointed as a member of Rajya Sabha.

Sreejaya polled 1,33,187 votes, while her Congress rival bagged 82,636 votes.   -- PTI

21:28   Exit polls get Maharashtra right, Jharkhand wrong
The majority of exit polls were right in predicting National Democratic Alliance's victory in Maharashtra even though none of them could predict the scale of the Mahayuti's win, but most of these surveys got the Jharkhand assembly elections wrong.

Axis MyIndia, which had predicted 178-200 seats for the Mahayuti, 82-102 seats for the opposition MVA and 6-12 seats for others, came closest to the final results in Maharashtra.

The ruling alliance was likely to end up winning in over 230 constituencies in the 288-seat assembly.

In Jharkhand, while all other exit polls had predicted a victory for the NDA, Axis MyIndia predicted that the Congress-Jharkhand Mukti Morcha alliance would manage a tally of 49-59 seats, while the Bharatiya Janata Party-led NDA and three seats for others.

This, however, comes after two of its predictions in the Lok Sabha and Haryana assembly elections were off the mark.

The agency, however, got the US election right.

In the 288-member Maharashtra assembly, 145 is the majority mark, while it is 41 in the 81-member Jharkhand assembly.

The exit poll conducted by People's Pulse gave NDA's Mahayuti a whopping 175-195 seats while giving only 85-112 seats to MVA and 7-12 to others in Maharashtra.

Some exit polls had also predicted a victory for the BJP in 5-7 seats out of bypolls held in nine assembly seats in Uttar Pradesh.

After the reverses in the Lok Sabha election, the ruling BJP-led alliance secured its hold over the crucial state of Uttar Pradesh with its candidates winning seven out of nine seats.

The BJP retained four seats -- Ghaziabad, Khair, Majhawan and Phulpur -- and wrested Katehari and Kundarki from the Samajwadi Party while its ally Rashtriya Lok Dal retained one.

The SP, which had four of these seats, retained Sishamau and Karhal.

The Election Commission has been criticising the exit polls on the manner in which they are conducted and in several past elections, they have been proved to be way off the mark.  -- PTI

21:04   Need to introspect: INDIA leaders on Maha results
As the results of Assembly elections and bypolls brought a mixed bag for the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) on Saturday, with the defeat in Maharashtra coming as a major setback, leaders of its constituents once again highlighted that smaller parties did not get enough seats to contest, even as they called the Jharkhand victory a 'moral defeat' for the attempts at communal polarisation.

The Bharatiya Janata Party-led Mahayuti alliance, which has the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena and Ajit Pawar's Nationalist Congress Party as its constituents, swept the Maharashtra polls, months after the Lok Sabha election, in which the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) won a large chunk of seats.

Communist Party of India-Marxist Politburo member Ashok Dhawale flagged the delay in finalising seat-sharing arrangements, the race among key opposition parties to get the maximum number of seats to contest and not giving enough space to smaller parties among the reasons for the INDIA bloc's below-par performance in Maharashtra, even as he accused the Mahayuti of using money power and handing out cash to voters.

"The MVA was overconfident because of its good show in the Lok Sabha polls. The seat adjustment should have been done by September, so that the remaining time could be used for public meetings," he said.

Dhawale said during the Lok Sabha polls held in April-May, the first state where the INDIA bloc finalised the seat-sharing arrangements was Maharashtra, which helped it achieve success.

Accusing the Mahayuti of using money power, he said, "There was unprecedented use of money power. People are telling us that BJP volunteers gave packets containing money amounting to Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000 to every household, even among the middle class."

Communist Party of India-Marxist-Leninist-Liberation general secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya described the Jharkhand poll results as a defeat for the BJP's 'politics of hatred'.

Bharatiya Janata Party leaders had raised allegations of infiltration of Bangladeshis and Rohingyas as a major poll issue.

"The Jharkhand results are encouraging. Basically, the BJP was trying to destablilise the state government and it did not succeed. The mandate is against the BJP's assault on federalism and politics of vendetta. It is also a defeat for the hate narrative that was being spread by BJP leaders," Bhattacharya told PTI.

Asked about the bypoll results in Bihar, which goes to assembly polls next year, he said it does not reflect the ground reality in the state.

Bhattacharya claimed that the bypoll results will not have any impact on the Bihar assembly election.

The ruling NDA in Bihar swept the bypolls to four assembly segments, retaining Imamganj and wresting Tarari, Ramgarh and Belaganj from the INDIA bloc.

On the election outcome in Maharashtra, Bhattacharya said, "The results are completely against the Lok Sabha poll trends. We need a proper investigation."

Communist Party of India general secretary D Raja welcomed the Jharkhand poll results and said the people of the state rejected the BJP's communal politics.

"BJP leaders, including the prime minister, stooped to such a low level.... If there is infiltration, it is the BJP government at the Centre that needs to answer. They made it a poll plank," Raja told PTI.

He also said the BJP's attempts to misuse agencies against Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren failed.

Asked about Maharashtra, Raja said there was no 'level-playing field' for the opposition, but added that serious introspection by the INDIA bloc constituents is the need of the hour.

"There was no level-playing field. There are doubts if the election was free and fair. Some BJP leaders were caught with huge amounts of money. What action did the Election Commission take?" he asked.

The results in Maharashtra are nonetheless a 'matter of concern', he added.

"The Congress and other parties that claim to be in the INDIA bloc should also do serious introspection as to why they could not put up a strong fight. It applies to the bypolls in Uttar Pradesh as well. There was no mutual accommodation among secular democratic parties at the time of seat sharing," the Left leader said.

The BJP won six of the nine Assembly seats that went to bypolls in Uttar Pradesh, while its ally Rashtriya Lok Dal got one.

The Samajwadi Party won the two remaining seats.

Meanwhile, Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Derek O'Brien pointed out that his party overcame challenges from both the BJP and INDIA bloc constituents Congress and the Left to win all the six assembly seats in West Bengal where bypolls were held.

"The TMC convincingly won all the six Assembly seats that went to bypolls. Other than the BJP, we were also facing two of the INDIA bloc parties -- Congress and CPI(M) -- who put up candidates in every seat," he said.

O'Brien, however, refused to comment on the performance of the INDIA bloc.

"We do not have an electoral alliance with any party in the bloc, so this is not a question we need to answer," the TMC's parliamentary party leader in the Rajya Sabha said.   -- PTI

20:31   Has Ladki Bahin ended all woes: Cong's Chennithala
Senior Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala on Saturday said the Maharashtra assembly poll results are unbelievable and unacceptable and asked if the ruling alliance's Ladki Bahin Yojana had managed to end farm woes and other problems faced by citizens.

Against most predictions of a close race between the Congress-led Maha Vikas Aghadi and the ruling Mahayuti, the results have been spectacularly lopsided with the BJP itself coming close to getting a majority in the 288-member assembly.

Congress stalwarts like former chief minister Prithviraj Chavan and CLP leader Balasaheb Thorat lost from Karad South and Sangamner, respectively, while state unit chief Nana Patole was trailing by a thin margin in Sakoli.

"The Maharashtra assembly polls are unbelievable and unacceptable. Did farm woes, price rise, unemployment, corruption end because of Ladki Bahin Yojana," Chennithala asked at a press conference.

The victorious Mahayuti has given a large part of the credit for the stellar showing to the scheme, under which women with an annual family income of less than Rs 2.5 lakh get Rs 1500 as monthly aid.

The ruling alliance leaders had said this amount would be increased to Rs 2,100 if they retained power.

"We will study the results in detail and go back to the people. We will continue to raise issues of the people," said Chennithala, who is the party's Maharashtra in charge.

The defeat of senior leaders like Balasaheb Thorat and Prithviraj Chavan was not expected at all, the Kerala MLA added.   -- PTI

20:12   Bypolls: BJP snatches 1 LS seat, Cong down to 98
The Bharatiya Janata Party on Saturday snatched one Lok Sabha seat from the Congress, lowering the opposition party's tally to 98, while a runaway victory in Maharashtra will also boost the ruling alliance's prospects in the Rajya Sabha where the western state sends the second-highest number of members.

The BJP had won 240 seats in the Lok Sabha elections held earlier this year. After its win in the Nanded Lok Sabha bypoll on Saturday, the party's tally in the 543-member Lower House has gone up to 241.

The Nanded bypoll was necessitated by the death of Congress MP Vasantrao Chavan on August 26.

The Congress had won 99 seats in the Lok Sabha elections with party leader Rahul Gandhi winning from Rae Bareli and Wayanad. He vacated his Wayanad seat from where his sibling Priyanka Gandhi Vadra won on Saturday.

After winning Wayanad and losing Nanded, the Congress' tally in the Lok Sabha now stands at 98.

The Basirhat seat in West Bengal is now the lone vacancy in the Lok Sabha.

Trinamool Congress MP SK Nurul Islam died on September 25. However, a bypoll could not be held in the seat as an election petition is pending against Islam in Calcutta High Court.

The BJP-led alliance's landslide victory in Maharashtra has also boosted its prospects in the Rajya Sabha and could help it get a majority in the Upper House.

Maharashtra sends 19 members to the Rajya Sabha.

At present, the BJP has seven members in the Upper House while the Congress has three, Shiv Sena one, Shiv Sena-UBT two, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) three, NCP-Sharad Pawar two, and the Republican Party of India-Athawale one.

The BJP has 95 MPs in the Rajya Sabha.

With it allies, the tally goes up to 112. Besides, there are six nominated members who support the ruling party.

The highest number of MPs in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha come from Uttar Pradesh, followed by Maharashtra.

While there are no immediate vacancies from Maharashtra, the Upper House has 10 vacancies from various other states, of which more than half are likely to go to the BJP. There are also four vacancies for nominated members.

This will easily push the BJP-led alliance past the halfway mark in the 245-member House.    -- PTI

19:53   BJP gets shot in the arm ahead of Delhi polls
With a victory secured in Maharashtra, the Bharatiya Janata Party received a shot in the arm ahead of the Delhi assembly polls next year, with its local leaders saying the party is now set to dethrone the Aam Aadmi Party government in the national capital with a massive win.

Even as the signs of the landslide victory of the party-led alliance emerged with counting of votes on 288 assembly seats in Maharashtra, the BJP announced a 'Parivartan Yatra' to end the 10 year-rule of Aam Aadmi Party in Delhi.

Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva said the Maharashtra election results were a stamp of public approval to the 'Modi magic'.

"The recent victory in Haryana polls and now, party's landslide victories in Maharashtra and the bypolls in Uttar Pradesh are big morale boosters for us.

"The party workers encouraged by these results will work with redoubled energy to wipe out the era of corruption led by AAP in Delhi," Sachdeva told PTI.

He said the party will launch a 'Parivartan Yatra' soon in Delhi, and that it has formed a nine-member committee headed by Satish Upadhyay to firm up the plan.

A confident Delhi BJP posted an animation video on its X account with caption 'The Lotus will bloom in Delhi also' and a background voice of late Atal Bihari Vajpayee saying '...the darkness will wane, the Sun will rise and the lotus will bloom...'

The BJP last won assembly polls in Delhi way back in 1993.

The Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP has dominated the affairs in Delhi for the last one decade, registering back-to-back landslide victories in 2015 and 2020 elections.

The BJP was routed both times, managing to scrape through with just three seats in 2015 and eight in 2020.

This time, however, the party is confident of staging a comeback and end a long wait at the helm of affairs in the city.

Another party functionary asserted that the signs of a 'far better' performance of the BJP in the upcoming assembly polls are clear.

"We won all the seven Lok Sabha seats this year and got more votes than AAP in 52 assembly segments out of 70," said the Delhi BJP leader.

Also, the image of Kejriwal as an honest, capable leader has received a 'major dent' with a string of corruption allegations like liquor scam in which he went to jail, 'Sheshmahal' scam, and the problems faced by the people due to bad roads, water shortage, pollution, dilapidated public transport among others, he claimed.

Gupta, the Leader of the Opposition in Delhi assembly, said the 'unprecedented and historic victory' in Maharashtra of the BJP-led alliance is a testament to the welfare-oriented policies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the capable leadership of BJP.

Gupta said that the 'grand victory' symbolised the 'relentless hard work, indomitable enthusiasm, and dedication' of every BJP worker, who took the party's 'principles and development agenda' to every household.

The Mahayuti alliance according to updates was headed to a landslide victory leading on more than 220 seats out of 288 against the Maha Vikas Aghadi.

As per the latest figures from the Election Commission, the BJP has so far won nine seats and is leading in 125, the Shiv Sena has won three and is ahead in 53 seats, while the NCP has won two and is leading in 37 seats.  -- PTI

19:29   MVA rout to leave Maha assembly without LoP
The Mahayuti landslide in Maharashtra will leave the state assembly without a leader of opposition as no party outside the ruling alliance has been able to get the mandatory minimum 29 seats.

As per data made available on the Election Commission website, the Shiv Sena-UBT, part of the opposition MVA, had won 17 seats and was leading on three.

Results for 220 of the 288 seats had been declared as at 7pm.

As per the EC website, the BJP had won 95 seats and was leading on 38, while Chief Minister Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena emerged victorious on on 44 and was leading on 13.

The third constituent of the Mahayuti, the Ajit Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party, won 35 seats and was leading on six.

In the Maha Vikas Aghadi, the Congress had won 10 seats and was leading on five, while Sharad Pawar's NCP-SP won eight seats and was leading on two.   -- PTI

19:09   Maharashtra poll outcome 'inexplicable': Cong
The Congress on Saturday described the Maharashtra poll outcome as 'inexplicable' and claimed that the level-playing field was disturbed in a targeted manner as part of a conspiracy to defeat it.

The opposition party, however, hailed the result in Jharkhand, saying the people of the state had categorically rejected the 'politics of polarisation' peddled by the Bharatiya Janata Party.

"The Maharashtra assembly poll result is surprising, inexplicable for us," Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said, stressing that it was not a victory of development, as projected by the BJP.

On Jharkhand, he said, "The people of Jharkhand have decisively rejected the politics of polarisation."

Congress leader Pawan Khera said, as the principal opposition party, 'we find it our responsibility to keep raising issues of transparency in elections'.

"The people of Jharkhand made victorious the government that worked for them," he said.

"The Maharashtra outcome has been brought out through a targeted conspiracy after the level-playing field was disturbed in the state to defeat the Congress... Our morale is not down and we will strengthen the organisation and analyse the results," Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said at a press conference.

"We won and lost today but the Congress' agenda will not change and we will keep raising the issues that we have been raising such as that of caste census, raising reservation limit of 50 per cent, growing economic disparity and 'Modani'," Ramesh said, adding that the people of Maharashtra had not rejected these issues, as projected by the BJP.

He said the Maharashtra results were opposite to the ground situation in the state a few months ago.

"We will analyse the poll outcome and come out with measures to strengthen the organisation and revive it in the state and continue to raise the issues that we have been raising," he said.

"We will keep raising questions on electoral transparency and there will be no change in our agenda," Ramesh said.   -- PTI

The landslide victory for ruling BJP-led Mahayuti in Maharashtra will bolster billionaire Gautam Adani-led group's USD 3-billion project to redevelop Mumbai slum of Dharavi into a "world-class" district.

Opposition Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) had pledged to reclaim all land given to the Adani group for redeveloping Asia's largest slum and promised to scrap the project altogether, if voted to power. According to the EC, Maharashtra witnessed a 65.02 per cent voter turnout in its single-phase polls on November 20.

15:10   This is a win of Modi, Shah, allies: Fadnavis
"I succeeded in breaking the 'chakravyuh' of opposition due to support of voters, our team and party leaders. This win is due to Modi, Shah and allies. Rahul Gandhi's fake narrative failed. This is a win for the Maharashtra people and that they support Modi. He also thanked the women. I only have a small role in this win. Ek hai safe hai helped us win. I want to respect the Opposition because Opposition is important in a democracy, irrespective of whether they are small or big," Devendra Fadnavis says.

On the succession battle, he says there is no debate about it. Amit Shah in a press conference had said that all three allies will sit together and decide on the next CM unitedly.

The legitimacy of the Bal Thackeray's Shiv Sena and Sharad Pawar's NCP now lies with Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar respectively.

Devendra Fadnavis, the political stalwart who rose from humble beginnings to become a key figure in Maharashtra politics, is on course to regain chief minister's post -- a position he has held twice before. The 54-year-old leader, whose career has been marked by a blend of resilience and strategic manoeuvring, is positioned to lead the state for the third time following a decisive showing of the BJP in the assembly polls.

Hemant Soren's JMM-led alliance was all set to retain Jharkhand as it was leading in at least 50 seats in the 81-member state assembly on Saturday, as per the Election Commission data.

The performance of the BJP-led NDA, which was seen as confident about its prospects in the state after an aggressive campaign, was poorer than its expectations.

It was leading in 29 seats. The BJP's poll plank was driving out "infiltrators" from the Santha Parganas region, but it seemed to have fallen flat in front of the 'Adivasi' card played by the JMM, which also sought the people's sympathy over the arrest of Chief Minister Hemant Soren.

According to the latest EC figures, the JMM was leading in 31 seats, the Congress in 14, the RJD in four and the CPI(ML) Liberation in one. The BJP was leading in 26 seats, while the AJSU Party, LJP (Ram Vilas) and JD(U) were ahead in one seat each.

14:00   Ladki Bahin was a game-changer: Shinde
With the Mahayuti poised for a landslide victory the Maharashtra elections, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Saturday said the coalition does not have a definitive formula that the party bagging the most seats will get the chief minister's post.

He said the poll trends were in favour of the Mahayuti because of his flagship initiative, the Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana. Early trends have indicated that the Mahayuti, comprising the BJP, Shiv Sena and NCP, will retain the power in Maharashtra. Speaking to reporters, Shinde said, "I thank all my ladki bahins (dear sisters) in the state and the brothers who voted in large numbers for us. The voting trend is an endorsement of our work."

"Every section of society voted for us because of our development efforts. The public has noticed our work and responded through their ballots," he said, adding that this outcome has increased their responsibility.

Shinde emphasised that his government always had a pro-people approach, which is why it is on its way to record a landslide victory, and he outlined the administration's commitment to development projects and welfare schemes.

A key factor in the election's outcome was the Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana, which provides Rs 1,500 to eligible women. Shinde referred to this initiative as a "major game changer" for the state elections. He further said the Mahayuti did not have a definitive formula that the party winning the most seats will get the chief minister post.

13:52   Mahayuti contested the election well together: Tawde
BJP National General Secretary Vinod Tawde says, "Voters in Maharashtra have won a thumping victory to BJP-Mahayuti. Under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi, Eknath Shinde, Devendra Fadnavis, Ajit Pawar, Ramdas Athawale contested the election well together.

"They run the government properly, so people reposed their trust. In 2019, Sharad Pawar, broke BJP's alliance by taking away Uddhav Thackeray. Voters of Balasaheb Thackeray didn't like it. NDA is leading on all 4 seats in Bihar, in Uttar Pradesh NDA is leading on 6 seats and on 4 seats in Rajasthan. This shows that people have reposed their trust in PM Modi. As far as the CM is concerned, Eknath Shinde, Devendra Fadnavis, Ajit Pawar and BJP's central leadership will make a decision together and tell you about it. Today, Mahayuti is celebrating its victory and expressing gratitude to the people of the state."

It's a question of whose support you take. Demographically, it is a particular community in strength there. Despite that, you take the support of PFI, of SDPI to win elections. 11:17   UBT: Mahayuti has done gadbad to steal MVA seats
Update: Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) MP Sanjay Raut on Saturday expressed concerns over the trends emerging from the counting of votes in Maharashtra for the recently held assembly elections, saying that they have done 'gadbad' to steal Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) seats.

NCP Sharad Pawar's teams contested 87 seats, but have leads in just 12.

Congress contested 103 seats but has leads in just 20.

He said that such results are being imposed because this cannot be the decision of the people of Maharashtra.

Raut further questioned the number of seats NCP and Shinde's Shiv Sena were getting, saying that the public doesn't agree with these results.

"They have done some 'gadbad', they have stolen some of our seats. This cannot be the public's decision. Even the public does not agree with these results. Once the results are out, we will talk more. In every election seat, money-counting machines were installed. Is it possible that Shinde will get 60 seats, Ajit Pawar will get 40 seats and BJP will get 125 seats? The people of this state are not dishonest. We have their faith in the people of Maharashtra," Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut told mediapersons in Mumbai.

08:04   Marandi believes BJP has edge in Jharkhand
Ahead of counting of votes for the 2024 Jharkhand assembly elections, BJP leader Babulal Marandi claimed with confidence that the BJP-led NDA would win over 51 seats and form the government in the state, citing corruption in the incumbent administration as the key reason.

Speaking before vote counting began on Saturday, Marandi said, "Look, regarding the government, we had some regrets, but after the elections, based on the feedback we received from grassroots-level workers, I can say with confidence that this time the BJP and the NDA alliance will secure 51-plus seats in Jharkhand, and the NDA will form the government here."

When asked about factors that might have worked in their favour, Marandi pointed to corruption and governance issues under the Hemant Soren-led government.

"One major factor was corruption, which plagued people from top to bottom. Law and order had deteriorated, development work wasn't happening, and on top of that, the issue of Bangladeshi infiltrators. The Hemant government was settling them here, making their ration cards, Aadhaar cards, linking them to voter lists, and even getting land registered in their names. Naturally, people were angry about all this, and that is one of the main reasons", the former Jharkhand CM told ANI.

Marandi also underlined that the BJP-NDA alliance had received support across all divisions and constituencies.

On discussions about the next chief minister, he said, "Wait until this evening when all the results will be out. The legislative party will meet, and the leader will be chosen. After that, we will call everyone and let you (media) know."

BJP spokesperson Pratul Shah Deo while addressing the media showed similar optimism.

He stated, "This morning has brought a new ray of hope to Jharkhand. There is great excitement among people. The end of the dark night of corruption, atrocities on women, loot, and corruption for 5 years is near...When the sun sets, it will be a political sunset for the Soren dynasty. NDA will form the Government by winning the highest number of seats in the history of Jharkhand."

Meanwhile, former Congress state president Rajesh Thakur too exuded confidence in the INDI alliance's performance. He said, "The stamp of approval by people on schemes like the Old Pension Scheme, farm loan waivers, free electricity, and women's welfare initiatives will reflect in the results. We believe we will form an even stronger government once again."
