23:36 India wants peace with China through consensus: Rajnath Singh
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday said India wants to continue the peace process with China through consensus as per the ideals of former PM Atal Behari Vajpayee.
Speaking to the personnel of the Indian Army at the headquarters of Gajraj Corps in Tezpur on the occasion of 'Bada Khana', Singh lauded the efforts of the soldiers in the peace process.
"We want to continue this peace process through consensus. Our former PM Atal Behari Vajpayee had said we can change friends, but not neighbours. We want to maintain good relations with our neighbours and that's a clear policy of India," he said.
However, sometimes such situations arise that need struggle to protect the country's borders while the government is doing everything possible to maintain the peace, he said.
"This is not a small development, it's a big development. We achieved this because of you. This mutual dialogue took place because everyone is aware of your courage and valour," he added.
Singh said the Northeast is very important from a security point of view.

Serpentine rows of vehicles clogged the roads in several parts of the national capital as shoppers flocked to markets on Diwali eve.

Traffic congestion was also seen on the Lado Sarai-Mehrauli route, Delhi-Meerut Expressway, Dwarka's Ashirwad Chowk and the Sagarpur-Janakpuri route, several commuters shared on social media. --PTI

21:42 Delhi air quality drops to 'very poor' on Diwali eve
Delhi's air quality slipped into the 'very poor' category on the eve of Diwali, with pollution levels expected to go up on Thursday, even as authorities said strict action will be taken against those violating the firecracker ban.
The city's 24-hour average Air Quality Index was recorded at 307 at 4 pm, up from 268 on Tuesday, according to the Central Pollution Control Board.
The Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, Pune said the air quality in the national capital is likely to be in the "very poor" category (AQI 300 to 400) on Thursday and Friday.
The air quality may also reach the severe category on these two days in case of additional emissions from firecrackers and stubble or waste fires.
According to the Decision Support System for Air Quality Management, if stubble burning occurs at levels similar to the last five years, it could contribute 15-18 percent to Delhi's pollution on these dates.
This is exacerbated by winds from the northwest, which may carry smoke into the city.
Under the Graded Response Action Plan, a set of emergency measures to curb air pollution in Delhi-NCR during winter, the air quality is categorised into four stages: Stage I -- "Poor" (AQI 201-300), Stage II -- "Very Poor" (AQI 301-400), Stage III -- "Severe" (AQI 401-450) and Stage IV -- "Severe Plus" (AQI above 450).
Delhi environment minister Gopal Rai said 377 teams have been formed to enforce the ban on firecrackers across the national capital.
He said authorities are in touch with resident welfare associations, market associations and social organisations to spread awareness.
A senior Delhi police officer said all deputy commissioners of police have been asked to form dedicated teams to ensure that firecrackers are not burst in their respective districts. -- PTI

Sticking to the usual 2-hour norm, people may burst firecrackers on Diwali between 6 am and 7 am and from 7 pm to 8 pm, the Tamil Nadu government said on Wednesday.
Citing a Supreme Court judgment of 2018, the government said people could burst crackers during the stipulated time on the day of the festival (October 31, 2024) and shall use green crackers.
An official release here said bursting of firecrackers must be avoided in 'silence areas' including those housing hospitals.
Also, it should be avoided near huts and other places that may easily catch fire.
"Let us celebrate Deepavali, as a festival of lights in an environment friendly manner rather than bursting noisy and smoke emitting crackers," the release added. -- PTI

20:00 Kashi, Mathura must also shine like Ayodhya: Yogi
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Wednesday said the transformation of Ayodhya is proof of "double-engine government delivering on its promise" and asserted that a similar transformation must also happen in Kashi and Mathura.
Participating in the eighth edition of the deepotsav in Ayodhya -- the first since the consecration of Ram temple on January 22, Adityanath said, "This is a historic first as after 500 years, Lord Ram is now in his abode in Ayodhya for Diwali."

"The double engine government has delivered on its promise (construction of Ram temple) and now is the turn of Ayodhya to prove itself. Remember, this 'agnipariksha' of Maa Sita should not happen again and again. We have to come out of this (bane)... People of Ayodhya must come forward once again (for this). This is why we are here today for this grand celebration," the CM said in his address while hitting out at the Opposition for "becoming barriers" in the government's growth agenda.
"Just like mafias, these barriers would also be eliminated," he said. -- PTI

19:01 J-K: NC to stay away from UT foundation day celebrations
Jammu and Kashmir's ruling National Conference on Wednesday said it would stay away from the Union Territory's foundation day celebrations on October 31 as it does not accept the status and wants restoration of statehood at the earliest.
"No one from the party will attend the UT foundation day function as we don't accept the status," NC chief spokesperson Tanvir Sadiq told reporters in Srinagar, adding that NC believes the decision taken on August 5, 2019, to bifurcate the erstwhile state into two UTs -- J-K and Ladakh -- was "illegal, unconstitutional and immoral".
"We want the restoration of statehood to J-K as soon as possible so that we can enjoy our status just like the other states," Sadiq said.
The NC spokesperson also said the government will restore the "Darbar move" -- a bi-annual practice of shifting the seat of power between Jammu and Srinagar during winters and summers, respectively.
"Darbar move is a legacy of J-K. We mentioned in our election manifesto that we will restore it. The move is directly linked to statehood and that is why we want its restoration. Once statehood is restored, the Darbar move will also be reinstated," Sadiq said. -- PTI

18:43 Gold surges Rs 1,000 to breach Rs 82k-mark as Diwali sparkles demand
Gold prices saw a steep surge of Rs 1,000 and breached the psychological Rs 82,000 per 10 grams-mark for the fist time in the national capital on Wednesday, amid robust buying by jewellers ahead of Diwali.
According to the All India Sarafa Association, the yellow metal of 99.9 percent purity soared by Rs 1,000 to hit a fresh peak of Rs 82,400 per 10 grams in Delhi.
The precious metal of 99.5 percent purity also climbed Rs 1,000 to hit an all-time high of Rs 82,000 per 10 grams in the local markets.
In the previous session, gold of 99.9 percent and 99.5 percent purity had closed at Rs 81,400 and Rs 81,000 per 10 grams, respectively.
Traders attributed the sharp jump in gold prices to massive buying by local jewellers in order to meet the rising demand during Diwali as well as firm global trend due to uncertain geopolitical situation ahead of the US presidential elections.
At Rs 82,400 per 10 gram, gold price has recorded a 35 per cent surge since October 29 last year when it was at Rs 61,200 per 10 grams.
Meanwhile, extending the gains for the fifth straight day, silver also jumped Rs 1,300 to Rs 1.01 lakh per kg against the previous close of Rs 99,700 per kg. -- PTI

18:24 Gautam Gambhir faces fresh probe in cheating case
Directing a fresh investigation, a Delhi court has set aside the discharge of former cricketer and current head coach of the Indian cricket team Gautam Gambhir, and others in a case where flat buyers were reportedly cheated.
Special judge Vishal Gogne set aside a magisterial court order, saying it reflected "inadequate expression of mind" in deciding the allegations against Gambhir.
"The allegations also merit further investigation into the role of Gautam Gambhir," Judge Gogne wrote in his October 29 order.
An alleged cheating case was filed against real estate firms Rudra Buildwell Realty Pvt. Ltd, H R Infracity Pvt Ltd., U M Architectures and Contractors Ltd., and Gambhir, who was a director and brand ambassador of the companies' joint venture.
The judge noted Gambhir was the only accused who had a "direct interface with the investors" in his capacity as a brand ambassador and though he had been discharged, the magisterial court's order made no reference to him paying Rs 6 crore to Rudra Buildwell Realty Pvt. Ltd and receiving Rs 4.85 crore from the company. -- PTI

17:41 Modi to address two rallies in Jharkhand on Nov 4
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit poll-bound Jharkhand on November 4 and address two rallies, Union minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said on Wednesday.
Home Minister Amit Shah will also address three public meetings on November 3, he said.
Chouhan, who is BJP's election in-charge for Jharkhand, said Modi would address rallies at Chaibasa and Garhwa.

People of the state cannot be happy as long as there is a JMM-Congress (RJD) government, Chouhan said.
Development work came to a standstill here, and the law and order situation turned worse with over 7,400 rape cases and more than 8,000 murders in Jharkhand during the present regime, the senior BJP leader claimed. -- PTI
17:33 China on disengagement: Neighbours have differences
First reactions on the India, China disengagement.
Chinese Ambassador to India, Xu Feihong says, "Regarding the very important meeting between President Xi and PM Modi, now that the two leaders have reached many important understandings, that would be a guideline for the further development of the relations of our two countries.
"I just hope that under the guidance of this consensus, our relations will be moving forward smoothly in the future and our relations will not be restricted or interrupted by specific disagreements between our two sides.
"As two neighbouring countries, it is quite natural we have some differences, the most important thing is how to handle and solve these differences. I think this is very important."
On a question on the resumption of direct flights between India and China, the Chinese Ambassador adds, "I am also looking forward to direct flights so that I can fly back to Beijing directly. I know that before 2020, we had direct flights, so it will be more convenient to everybody if we have direct flights. It will save time and money."

Benchmark equity indices Sensex and Nifty declined on Wednesday, dragged down by banking and financial stocks amid weak trends in global markets. Besides, weak earnings numbers and persistent foreign fund outflows impacted market sentiments, traders said.

17:05 After disengagement, India, China troops to exchange mithai
Update: Troop disengagement at two friction points at Demchok and Depsang Plains in eastern Ladakh following a key agreement firmed up between India and China has been completed and patrolling will commence soon at these points, Indian Army sources said on Wednesday.
Exchange of sweets between the sides will take place on Diwali tomorrow, they said.
The sources added that verification post-disengagement is in progress and patrolling modalities are to be decided between ground commanders. Talks will continue at the local commander level, an Army source said.
On October 25, Army sources here said the process was likely to get completed by October 28-29. The agreement framework was signed first at the diplomatic level and then military-level talks took place, they had said, adding the nitty-gritty of the agreement was worked on during the Corps Commander-level talks which was signed last week.
Adhering to agreements between the two sides, Indian troops then began to pull back equipment to rear locations in these areas. The process follows the agreement firmed up between the two countries on patrolling and disengagement of troops along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh, a major breakthrough to end the over four-year standoff.
The ties between the two Asian giants had nosedived following a fierce clash in the Galwan Valley in June 2020 that marked the most serious military conflict between the two sides in decades. Sources earlier said the areas and patrolling status were expected to be moved back to pre-April 2020 level. PTI
16:59 Uddhav not even getting 100 seats, smirks BJP
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Maharashtra President Chandrashekhar Bawankule on Wednesday took a dig at Shiv Sena (UBT) Chief Uddhav Thackeray and said that the Congress has compelled Uddhav on seat sharing and he was getting so many seats to contest when he was with the BJP but now is not even getting 100 seats.
Addressing a press conference, Bawankule said that the BJP has always respected Matoshri (Uddhav Thackeray's home) and its legacy.
"Congress has compelled Uddhav Thackeray in seat sharing. With us, they were getting so many seats but now they aren't even getting 100 seats to contest. We always respected Matoshri and its legacy. But now we see that on seats being contested by Shivsena (UBT), Congress has given their candidates as rebels," he said.
"We are not in a number game. That is why we exchanged our candidates on multiple seats based on winnability criteria," Bawankule added.
Sharpening his attacks on Congress, the Maharashtra BJP chief said that Congress always does Muslim vote bank politics.
16:41 Canada minister alleges Amit Shah targeted Sikh separatists
More news from Canada and the deep chill in its relations with India.
Home Minister Amit Shah ordered a campaign of violence, intimidation and intelligence-gathering targeting Sikh separatists inside Canada, a Canadian official has said.
The official who is the Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister, David Morrison, told Canada MPs from the national security committee that he had confirmed Amit Shah's name to The Washington Post, which first reported the allegations.
Morrison told the committee. that the Post journalist called him and asked if it was indeed HM Shah, which Morrison confirmed to the newspaper.
There were no details on how Canada knew of Shah's alleged involvement.
Canada Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said a year ago that Canada had credible evidence that agents of the Indian government were involved in the murder of Canadian Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia in June 2023.
Canadian authorities have repeatedly said they have shared evidence of that with Indian authorities but Indian government officials have also denied Canada provided evidence and called the allegations absurd.

15:34 BJP firm on backing Raj Thackeray's son: Fadnavis
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday said the BJP still wants to throw its weight behind MNS head Raj Thackeray's son Amit Thackeray in Mahim assembly seat, which the ruling Shiv Sena is also contesting. Efforts will be made to find a solution to this, Fadnavis told reporters in Mumbai.
The senior BJP leader also said his party would try to convince most of its rebels to withdraw their nominations, but added that there will be friendly fights in some seats in the November 20 state polls. The Shiv Sena, led by CM Eknath Shinde, has fielded sitting MLA Sada Sarvankar from Mahim, while Mahesh Sawant is the candidate of the Shiv Sena (UBT) headed by former CM Uddhav Thackeray from the seat in Mumbai. The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) of Raj Thackeray is not a part of the Mahayuti, comprising the BJP, Shiv Sena and Deputy CM Ajit Pawar's NCP, but supported the ruling alliance in the Lok Sabha polls held earlier this year.
Fadnavis said the BJP and CM Shinde had a consensus on supporting MNS candidate Amit Thackeray, who is making his electoral debut, in the Mahim assembly constituency.
"However, leaders from the Shinde-led Shiv Sena argued that if the party does not contest the election, its dedicated voters would shift to the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT). The BJP was ready to support Amit and is still firm on its stand," he said. Asked about the solution to this conundrum, Fadnavis said, "When we (leaders of Mahayuti) meet, we will discuss and try to find a solution."
Mahim has witnessed the birth of the undivided Shiv Sena (1966) and then the MNS, which came into existence in 2006 when Raj Thackeray charted his own independent political course. Fadnavis also maintained that every major political party in the state has been facing the challenge of rebels in the assembly elections. The BJP would try to convince most of its rebels to withdraw their nominations, Fadnavis said. There will be friendly fights in some seats, he added.
14:41 Victim's family on Darshan's bail: Have faith in law
The family of Renukaswamy, who was allegedly killed by Darshan Thoogudeepa and others, on Wednesday declined to comment on the Karnataka High Court granting the actor interim bail on medical grounds but expressed confidence that the guilty will be punished as they have faith in the judiciary and the police.
In a relief to Darshan, an accused in the Renukaswamy murder case, the Court granted him interim bail for a period of six weeks, to undergo a spine surgery.
"Bail has been granted under the legal system, we cannot comment on it. We have faith that the guilty will be punished. We have faith in law and the police. (Darshan's) treatment is a matter for the doctor, him and the court, we don't want to comment on it," Renukaswamy's father Kashinath Shivanagoudar told reporters.
"We don't have anything to say other than that the guilty should be punished. We have faith in law and judiciary, so we are confident that the guilty will be punished," he added.
Sahana, wife of Renukaswamy, had given birth to a baby boy on October 16. She was five months pregnant when her husband was killed.
Darshan was arrested on June 11 and is lodged in Ballari prison. His friend Pavithra Gowda and 15 others are co-accused in the case. Pavithra is lodged in Bengaluru prison, and others in various jails of the state; some of them have recently obtained bail.
According to police, 33-year-old Renukaswamy, a fan of the actor, had sent obscene messages to his friend Pavithra, which enraged Darshan, allegedly leading to his murder. His body was found near a storm water drain next to an apartment in Sumanahalli here on June nine. Raghavendra, one of the accused who is part of Darshan's fan club in Chitradurga, had brought Renukaswamy to a shed in R R Nagar in Bengaluru, on the pretext that the actor wanted to meet him.
It was in this shed that he was allegedly tortured and murdered. According to the post-mortem report, Renukaswamy, a native of Chitradurga, died due to shock and hemorrhage as a result of multiple blunt injuries.
Police have said Pavithra, who is accused number one, was the "major cause" for Renukaswamy's murder, claiming that it has been proved from the probe that she instigated other accused, conspired with them, and took part in the crime. PTI

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut on Wednesday said the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) has succeeded in placating rebels on 90 per cent of the seats from where they filed nomination against the alliance's official candidates.
He said the Shiv Sena (UBT) has filed nominations in 96 seats. When asked about the rebels who are in the fray, Raut said, "Such things happen in alliance. We will sit together and try to pacify the rebels. We want to bring in a change and for that to happen, everyone must stay together."
"We have convinced party workers (who rebelled against official candidates) on 90 per cent of such seats," he said.
The Rajya Sabha member said Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray, NCP (SP) president Sharad Pawar and the Congress leadership will try to placate the disgruntled aspirants.
The last date to withdraw nomination papers is November 4.
He acknowledged that when three parties contest together, the parties as well as workers face issues because of limited seats. On Sangole and Alibag seats where MVA constituent Shiv Sena (UBT) and ally Peasants and Workers' Party (PWP) have fielded their own candidates, Raut said his party had won these seats in 2019.
However, it is still ready to hold talks on these seats as the PWP is part of the MVA, he added. When asked whether Sangli pattern will be seen in some seats, Raut took a dig at the Congress and said had its ally followed the coalition dharma during the Lok Sabha polls, Shiv Sena (UBT) candidate Chandrahar Patil would have won.
14:31 I understand the responsibility that comes with your love: Priyanka
Congress leader and party candidate for Wayanad Lok Sabha by-election Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said that her brother and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi tells her not just in public but in private that he treats the people of Wayanad as his family and not electorate and that when others turned away, Wayanad stood by her brother.
She added that she fully understands the roles and responsibilities that come up with people's love and support.
Addressing a public rally in Kerala's Wayanad, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said, "I understand the responsibility that comes with your love and support. When others turned away, Wayanad stood by my brother, giving him the strength to walk across India for unity and peace. Today, we're fighting together for the values of our Constitution: democracy, equality, and truth."
"Each one of you is an important soldier in this fight. My brother Rahul Gandhi tells me not just in public but privately as well that he treats you like family and not the electorate. We are fighting a big battle and he is leading that battle. Along with me, you too also have a responsibility towards our country. If there is a time to stand for truth and democracy, then it is now. 14:16 40 Years Later, Can The Wounds Ever Heal?
The year 2024 is the fortieth anniversary year of several narrative-altering events in India.
The most momentous and linked events in 1984 were undoubtedly Indira Gandhi's assassination on October 31 triggered by Operation Bluestar a few months earlier, and followed by the anti-Sikh pogrom for 3-4 days in Delhi and several others cities and towns in India.
The Lok Sabha elections which followed remain the most one-sided poll in the nation's history with the Congress winning 404 seats with only marginally less than 50% vote share (minus seats in Punjab and Assam where elections were held in the second half of 1985).
But this is not to belittle the impact and equally culpable nature of the Bhopal Gas Tragedy.

13:44 Canada LoP cancels Diwali celebrations, Hindu groups condemn
Hindus in Canada are aggrieved after Opposition leader Pierre Poilievre had chosen to cancel the 2024 Diwali celebrations.
The Hindu Forum on Canda says that the move sends a clear message of exclusion to the community.
'A move that sends a clear message of exclusion to a community deeply woven into Canada's cultural fabric. Diwali, a festival symbolising light and unity, is celebrated worldwide, with leaders like US President Biden and astronaut Sunita Williams honoring it with great respect. Yet, CPC leader Pierre Poilievre has shown a concerning disregard for Canadian Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, and Jains. This decision is a politically motivated act of appeasement that dismisses a significant, vibrant part of Canadian society,' a statement from the Hindu Forum said.
The organisation called on Indian origin people in Canada to vote for leaders who stand by all Canadians.
'Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, and Jains in Canada--nearly 2.5 million strong--are rapidly growing communities that have made meaningful contributions across fields, from science to education. Mutual respect among communities is what strengthens Canada, but it seems CPC leadership does not uphold this principle when it comes to these communities.
'It's crucial for Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, and Jains to stand united against decisions that show a lack of respect for our culture and beliefs. In the upcoming federal elections, let's choose wisely. Pierre Poilievre is not yet Prime Minister, yet his true colors of appeasement politics show through by canceling Diwali celebrations.
'If he were to become Prime Minister, what further tactics might he use? Our votes should go to leaders who genuinely respect and stand by all Canadians, and we must make our voices heard. This Diwali, let's stand together for representation, respect, and true inclusivity,' the statement said.
Earlier. Canada's opposition leader Pierre Poilievre cancelled the Diwali celebrations, scheduled to take place at Parliament Hill, amid the ongoing diplomatic row with India.
The Overseas Friends of India Canada (OFIC), the event's organiser, received no explanation for the cancellation of the Diwali celebration. -- ANI

11:51 VBA candidate misses nomination by few minutes
High drama was witnessed at the collectorate in Nagpur as former Maharashtra minister Anees Ahmed, given ticket by the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi to contest Nagpur Central seat, missed the deadline for filing nomination by just a few minutes.
Ahmed, a Gandhi family loyalist who won the Nagpur Central seat three times in the past on Congress ticket, stayed put at the collectorate till 8 pm on Tuesday, the last day of filing nominations for the state assembly polls, but in vain as his form was not accepted.
The deadline for filing of nominations for the November 20 state polls was 3 pm on Tuesday.
Talking to PTI, Ahmed claimed he had to face various obstacles like road closure, vehicular restrictions and security protocols at the office of the Returning Officer (RO) on Tuesday. The former minister also said he was occupied during the day in securing relevant documents for the submission and reached the collectorate before the 3 pm deadline.
His associates were sitting there with his token number but he was not allowed inside the RO's office, Ahmed claimed. Questions were being raised as to how the senior leader could miss the deadline and there were speculations that the Congress top brass made efforts to convince him not to contest. Ahmed recently resigned from the Congress.
This had led to concerns in the Congress camp about the possibility of his candidature splitting the Muslim votes and denting the grand old party's prospects while favouring the BJP.
The Congress this time did not field Ahmed from Nagpur Central constituency, which has a considerable Muslim population, and renominated Bunty Shelke, who narrowly lost to the BJP in 2019.
Ahmed was not initially keen on fighting the election, but later pitched for a ticket from the Congress, claiming Muslim leaders wanted him to contest the election for the community's representation from the seat.
He resigned from the Congress a few days back and joined the Prakash Ambedkar-led Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi in Mumbai on Monday and got the 'AB' from VBA to file nomination from the seat. The Asaduddin Owaisi-led All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) had also earlier offered the ticket to Ahmed, but he then rejected it claiming loyalty to the Congress. PTI

The bench of Justice S Vishwajith Shetty granted interim bail for a period of six weeks to undergo medical treatment. The court had reserved the order on Tuesday on the bail application after hearing detailed arguments from the actor's legal representative, senior advocate C V Nagesh, and State Public Prosecutor P Prasanna Kumar. Darshan was arrested on June 11 and is lodged in Ballari Prison. His bail application, submitted on September 21, was rejected by a sessions court. Following this, he petitioned the High Court and requested interim bail to receive treatment.

His body was found near a stormwater drain next to an apartment in Sumanahalli in Bengaluru on June 9.
Raghavendra, one of the accused who is part of Darshan's fan club in Chitradurga, had brought Renukaswamy to a shed in R R Nagar here, on the pretext that the actor wanted to meet him.
"It's not easy in New York City, where 1.1 million students are studying in the school, to declare the school a public holiday," said Chauhan. But finally, under the administration of New York City Mayor Eric Adams, they have declared, The administration has declared, November 1st, Friday is a school holiday."
Further, Chauhan highlighted the significance of this decision, citing years of advocacy from community leaders and officials. 10:25 Stay alert: HDFC Bank advisory on digital arrests
A day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi warned citizens about 'digital arrest', HDFC Bank issued an advisory urging its customers to stay vigilant and avoid falling victim to such fraudulent practices.
The country's largest private sector bank has shared tips on how its customers can protect themselves from the emerging online fraud. It has asked its customers not to share sensitive information such as KYC details, bank details like user ID password, card details, CVV, OTPs or PIN number with anyone.
Additionally, the bank has suggested that in the event of a person becoming a victim of any online fraud, they should immediately report the unauthorised transactions to the bank in order to get the payment channel blocked -- cards/UPI/net banking -- to safeguard against future losses. Modi on Sunday, during his radio address to the nation, stated that there is no system like digital arrest in the Indian law. And those who are engaging in such activities 'are enemies of society'.
The prime minister further stated that investigative agencies are working in partnership with state governments to combat the scam being carried out in the name of digital arrest. According to the government data, Indians lost approximately Rs 120.3 crore (Rs 1.203 billion) to 'digital arrest' fraud schemes during the first quarter of 2024.
In digital arrests, fraudsters inform potential victims about a suspicious package allegedly containing illegal items. Victims are then contacted via video call by individuals posing as law enforcement, who demand payments to 'settle' the issue. During these calls, victims are pressured to remain visually connected -- termed a 'digital arrest' -- until they comply with the demands.
Manish Agrawal, senior executive vice-president Credit Intelligence and Control HDFC Bank, said, "When someone receives a call or message from fraudsters claiming to be law enforcement officers, always confirm their identity by independently contacting the government/law enforcement officials via proper channels.
"Staying vigilant and being aware of such fraudulent practices plays a very important role in avoiding falling prey to such scams." Further, the bank has instructed customers to incidents of 'digital arrest' on the department of telecommunication's Chakshu Portal.

Top Canadian officials have reportedly admitted to leaking details about India's foreign interference to The Washington Post, but these specifics were not shared with Canadians, The Globe and Mail reported This news comes amid ongoing tensions between Canada and India, particularly after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused the Indian government of involvement in the killing of a Canadian Sikh activist.
According to the report, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's national security and intelligence adviser has confirmed she leaked sensitive information about the Indian government's alleged role in murder, extortion and coercion to The Washington Post that was not shared with the Canadian public. Nathalie Drouin, Trudeau's national security and intelligence adviser, told the Commons public safety committee on Tuesday that she did not require Trudeau's authorisation for the leak and insisted no classified intelligence was provided to the US publication the day before Ottawa expelled six Indian diplomats on Thanksgiving Day on October 13.

09:31 New baggage rules after Bandra station stampede
Days after a stampede at the Bandra Terminus here, the Western Railway has said a penalty will be imposed if the luggage of passengers exceeds the permissible limit for their respective travel class and urged people not to overcrowd stations.
Each passenger is permitted to carry a certain amount of luggage without charge, but items such as scooters and bicycles, as well as consignments exceeding dimensions of 100 cm x 100 cm x 70 cm do not qualify for the free allowance, the WR said in a release on Tuesday.
"Western Railway urges all passengers to avoid overcrowding at stations and to enter premises only as necessary, in accordance with train schedules, while adhering to the established luggage limits," the release stated.
The step has taken to reduce congestion on platforms and facilitate smoother movement for passengers within the station premises, it said. The Western Railway has appealed to all passengers to follow the rules pertaining to carrying the maximum limit of free luggage.
"The free allowance varies for different classes of travel. If the luggage exceeds the marginal free allowance, a penalty will be charged accordingly," the release said, adding the directive comes into effect immediately and will remain in force till November 8. A significant rise has been witnessed in parcel bookings during the festive season, particularly at the parcel offices of the Bandra Terminus, Vapi, Valsad, Udhna and Surat, it said.
The WR noted that the volume of parcels kept stacked on platforms for loading in trains causes inconvenience in passenger movement. Considering the safety and security of passengers, instructions have been issued not to stack the parcel consignments on platforms for a long duration before the scheduled departure of a train, the release said.
On Sunday, 10 persons were injured in a stampede during heavy rush to board the Gorakhpur-bound Antyodaya Express train at the Bandra Terminus in Mumbai. The Western Railway has already implemented temporary restrictions on the sale of platform tickets at select major stations, effective till November 8. PTI
09:18 Biden calls Trump supporters garbage
United States President Joe Biden sparked controversy when he compared supporters of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump to garbage.
Biden was commenting on a racist joke a comedian made at a Trump rally days earlier likening Puerto Rico to an 'island of garbage'.
"The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporters, his demonisation of Latinos is unconscionable, and it's un-American. It's totally contrary to everything we've done, everything we've been," Biden said in his remarks on a campaign call for Latino voters on Tuesday.
"Just the other day, a speaker at his rally called Puerto Rico a 'floating island of garbage'. Well, let me tell you something. I don't know the Puerto Rican that -- that I know -- or a Puerto Rico, where I'm fr- -- in my home state of Delaware, they're good, decent, honourable people," he said.
Republican Senator Marco Rubio raised this issue in front of thousands of Trump supporters in Allentown, Pennsylvania.
Trump, the former president, was also quick to condemn it.
Trump, who was holding a rally in Allentown, described Biden's remarks as 'terrible', and likened them to Hillary Clinton's comments calling some of Trump's supporters 'deplorables' in 2016.
"So, you have to remember Hillary [Clinton], she said 'deplorable' and then she said 'irredeemable'," Trump said. "'Garbage' I think is worse."
In a damage control exercise, Biden later tried to explain his remarks on X.
'Earlier today I referred to the hateful rhetoric about Puerto Rico spewed by Trump's supporter at his Madison Square Garden rally as garbage which is the only word I can think of to describe it,' Biden wrote.
'His demonisation of Latinos is unconscionable. That's all I meant to say. The comments at that rally don't reflect who we are as a nation,' Biden said.
Trump's running mate Ohio Senator J D Vance described it as disgusting.
'This is disgusting. Kamala Harris and her boss Joe Biden are attacking half of the country,' he wrote on X.
'There's no excuse for this. I hope Americans reject it,' he added.
Karoline Leavitt, the Trump Campaign's National Press Secretary, said in a statement that Trump is backed by Latinos, Black voters, union workers law enforcement officers, border patrol agents and Americans of all faiths.
'(Kamala) Harris, (Tim) Walz and Biden have labelled these great Americans as fascists, Nazis, and now, garbage,' Leavitt said.
'There's no way to spin it: Joe Biden and Kamala Harris don't just hate President Trump, they despise the tens of millions of Americans who support him. Kamala does not deserve four more years. President Trump will be a president for all Americans,' she said.
Biden's remarks came as Democratic presidential nominee and Vice President Kamala Harris delivered a speech in Washington, DC about her desire to move the United States past an era of divisive rhetoric and name-calling to one marked by unity and compromise.

08:46 Chinese hackers target Trump's son, son in-law
Former United States President Donald Trump's son, Eric Trump and son-in-law, Jared Kushner are being targeted by Chinese government-linked hackers as part of a large-scale 'cyber-espionage campaign' affecting senior leaders in both the Republican and Democratic parties, as suspected by US officials, CNN reported.
This report comes just days before the US election scheduled on November 5.
CNN reported, citing sources, that the hackers are targeting calls and text data of Eric Trump and Jared Kushner and dozens of individuals may be affected by the hackers.
Other targets include former President Donald Trump, his running mate J D Vance, and individuals associated with the Harris-Walz campaign.
Additionally, prominent Democrats, including the staff of Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, have also been targeted.
The extent of the hack was described as 'way worse than the public knows', and officials are still investigating its full impact, according to CNN, citing sources familiar with the intelligence.
In some instances, the hackers may have accessed the call and text data of their targets for several months. The FBI is actively notifying those affected, the report added.
Notably, the New York Times was the first to report that Eric Trump and Kushner were specifically targeted.
US officials investigating the hacking campaign, which involved intrusions at US telecom firms AT&T, Lumen, and Verizon, consider it to be one of the most concerning national security-related hacks in recent memory--more serious than initial reports suggested, as reported by CNN.
US officials consider this hacking campaign--originating from breaches at telecom firms AT&T, Lumen, and Verizon--to be one of the most concerning national security hacks in recent history, more serious than earlier reports suggested.
The timing of these revelations coincides with a critical FBI investigation into the hacking affecting both the Trump and Harris campaigns, occurring just before an important election.
While the hackers do not seem to be trying to influence the election, as some Iranian hackers did earlier this year, they are seeking to gather intelligence on the private communications of key officials from both parties, which would be of particular interest to Beijing.
Investigators also believe the hackers may be looking for other sensitive national security information, including details about wiretap warrant requests made by the Justice Department, according to CNN. -- ANI
08:17 US refutes reports of expelling Indian diplomats
The United States State Department has refuted reports claiming Washington, DC is considering 'expelling' Indian diplomats amid the strained ties between India and Canada.
During a press briefing on Tuesday (local time), State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said he was unfamiliar with any such report and was not aware of any expulsion of Indian diplomats.
"I am not familiar with this report that we expelled Indian diplomats...I'm not aware of any expulsion," Miller stated.
Earlier this month, India recalled six diplomats from Canada after they were declared 'persons of interest' by the Canadian government, in the investigation into the killing of pro-Khalistan terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
The US also reacted on the case of Vikash Yadav, a former employee of the Indian government, in connection with his alleged role in directing a foiled plot to assassinate Khalistani terrorist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun.
Being asked about Yadav's possible extradition, Miller said that the extradition matter comes under the prerogative of the US Justice Department.
He also mentioned that the US has been in dialogue with the Indian government on this issue.
The State Department spokesperson added that India had sent a delegation to the US two weeks ago to brief officials on the status of their investigation and that the US made it clear to Indian counterparts that there would be 'real accountability'.
"I would refer you to the Justice Department on that when it comes to extradition. That's a legal matter that we differ from DOJ. But I will tell you that we have been in dialogue with the government of India. They sent a delegation here two weeks ago to directly brief US government officials on the status of their investigation, and we briefed them on the status of our investigation. We made it clear that at that meeting, there will be real accountability," Miller said. -- ANI

The Haridwar Government Railway Police received information from the control room of Moradabad Railway Division on Sunday night about detonators lying on the railway track near Moti Chur railway station, they said.
A GRP team rushed to the spot and recovered the detonators, they added. CCTV footage showed a man moving suspiciously along the railway tracks, Haridwar GRP's Senior superintendent of police Sarita Dobhal said.
After scanning the CCTV footage, the suspect was identified as Ashok, a resident of Rampur in Uttar Pradesh, and arrested, she said.
Several detonators were recovered from the accused, Dobhal said, adding that a case has been registered against Ashok.
