23:56 India adopts balanced approach to W Asia clash: Jaishankar
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Monday said India's approach to the conflict that has been going on in West Asia since last year is balanced as it looks at the issues in all their complexities and also has a fundamental commitment to justice and equity.
Jaishankar, 69, also reiterated that India supports a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestine issue during an interaction with the Indian community in Manama.
As a country that itself has been impacted so deeply by terrorism, we are very strongly opposed to terrorism and hostage-taking.
They should never be excused or condoned, Jaishankar said. But at the same time, it is very important that any action which is taken by any government or any armed force must always take care of civilian casualties and must always be respectful of humanitarian law, the minister said.
Jaishankar further said that India has been contributing to the UNRWA (United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees), the primary relief agency in respect of Palestinians, and given relief to the Palestine authority and also given medical relief to Lebanon.
At the end of the day, we do believe there must be a solution to the Palestine issue because if there is not one, it will always remain a cause of instability in the region, he said. -- PTI

23:31 Yes Madam criticised over purported email on firing of stressed staff
Online beauty services platform YesMadam drew flak on Monday after a purported internal email leaked on social media suggesting the termination of those staff who had indicated workplace stress, although many dubbed it a marketing gimmick for a possible campaign.
An email sent to the company, however, did not elicit a response.
Anushka Dutta, whose LinkedIn profile identifies her as a UX copywriter at the company, in a post said: "What's happening at YesMadam? First you conduct a random survey and then fire us overnight because we're feeling stressed?"
She attached a screenshot which shows a mail from the company's HR official.
Internet users, however, were skeptical and speculated of the post's legitimacy, terming it as a publicity stunt.
"Looking at Yes Madam's marketing trends this looks like a campaign. The virality of these firing posts set a good ground to launch "corporate packages for a de-stress massage" or something.
Plus they're a human resource heavy business, eliminating 100s of employees is contradictory to their ongoing rapid scaling.
Controversial Marketing at its best," a user wrote on X.
An ex-employee told PTI that whatever is happening appears to be a marketing stunt. Another netizen took a funny dig on the issue and said, "Does Yes Madam's marketing team know that there are 113 days until April 1st". -- PTI

20:34 TN assembly urges Centre to cancel Madurai tungsten mining rights
The Tamil Nadu assembly on Monday passed a resolution urging the Centre to immediately cancel tungsten mining rights granted to Hindustan Zinc Limited in the state, following an intense debate in the Assembly House.
Chief Minister MK Stalin, who intervened during the debate, asserted he would not allow mining at any cost, as it would affect the livelihood besides adversely impact the environment.
"Tungsten mining will not be allowed under any circumstances. If it (project) comes, then I will not hold this post (of chief minister)," Stalin said when the Leader of Opposition Edappadi K Palaniswami charged the ruling dispensation with "being silent" for 10 months and deciding to act only after the people in the affected areas of Melur in Madurai district began to protest.
The resolution piloted by state Water Resources Minister Duraimurugan was passed unanimously with the BJP choosing not to oppose it at the introductory stage.
It stated that the Centre disregarded the objection and concerns raised by the Tamil Nadu government on October 3, 2023, over the move to mine tungsten and proceeded with the auction. Granting mining rights to Hindustan Zine Limited to set up a Tungsten Mineral Mine in Nayakkarpatti Village in Melur Taluk of Madurai district was condemnable, the resolution said.
Inspite of pointing out that the area where rights have been granted was declared a Bio-Diversity Heritage Site by the state government in 2022, the Centre gave the rights for mining activities.
The site included many historical monuments such as cave temples, Jain symbols, Tamil Brahmi scripts, Panchapandavar beds and is a habitat for rare species, the resolution said. -- PTI

15:30 Mamata's lollipop jibe at B'desh attacking India
Taking a dig at a section of Bangladeshi politicians, who said the country has legitimate claims over Bengal, Bihar and Odisha, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday wondered whether Indians "would have lollipop" when external forces would try to occupy Indian lands.
Speaking in the West Bengal Assembly, she urged people to remain calm and not get provoked by statements made in Bangladesh, stating that West Bengal will always stand by any decision taken by the Centre. Mocking some Bangladeshi leaders, who have made provocative statements recently, she said, "Stay calm and healthy and have peace of mind."
A Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) recently said in a public meeting in Dhaka that the country has legitimate claims over Bengal, Bihar and Odisha. Asking people of West Bengal to remain calm and not get swayed by provocative statements made by some people in Bangladesh, she said, "In our state, even imams have condemned the comments and attacks on minorities in Bangladesh."
"The same blood flows in the veins of Hindus and Muslims and all other communities. We must all work together to ensure nothing is done to aggravate the situation in West Bengal," she said.
"West Bengal is the first state in the country where people irrespective of caste, creed or community staged collective protest against the situation in Bangladesh," the chief minister said. Asking everyone, including her political rivals, not to do anything that might aggravate the situation, she also urged media houses to act responsibly while commenting on the situation in the neighbouring country.
"West Bengal is not Uttar Pradesh that we will ban your telecast. But act responsibly in the interest of West Bengal and its people. If trouble breaks out here, will it not affect you? Similarly, if the situation worsens in Bangladesh, it will affect our relatives and friends there. Hence please maintain restraint while commenting on the situation," she said.
The West Bengal chief minister said her government and party, the Trinamool Congress, will follow the guidelines of the Ministry of External Affairs and will not speak out of turn. "Our foreign secretary is in Bangladesh for talks. Let us not speak more than what is required. Let us wait for the outcome. We are responsible citizens. Our country is united," she said. -- PTI
15:09 Big Soros showdown in RS, House adjourned
The Rajya Sabha proceedings were adjourned for a third time till 3 pm on Monday as the treasury benches accused top Congress leaders of collusion with billionaire investor George Soros to destabilise the country.
The Upper House witnessed two adjournments during the pre-lunch session, with treasury bench members demanding a discussion on what they termed a national security issue.
When the House reassembled post lunch, the ruling NDA members were up on their feet again seeking discussion on the issue. Leader of the House J P Nadda stated that BJP members were agitated over reports involving opposition leaders and were keen to discuss the matter.
"The link between Forum of Democratic Leaders in the Asia-Pacific (FDL-AP) and George Soros is a matter of concern. Its co-president is a member of this House," he said. Nadda alleged that the FDL-AP sees Jammu and Kashmir as a "separate entity," and gets financial support from the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation.
"This maligns India's image and raises concern about the national security. People are concerned the way Congress is playing with the national security. Therefore our members want a discussion," he said.
Without taking the name of Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, Nadda alleged that the Congress leader goes abroad and speaks the language that promotes George Soros and raises those matters here that are flagged by the Forum, thereby de-stabilising the national security. Nadda said that Soros wants to destabilise India as it has emerged as the world's fifth largest economic power and aiming to become a developed nation.
"Congress is becoming a tool...Therefore, there should be a detailed discussion. ...This is a matter of internal and external security," he said. Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge rose to refute the allegations and before he could speak, Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar asked both Nadda and Kharge to meet him in his chamber to resolve the logjam. The chair then adjourned the House till 3 pm. PTI

12:53 Farmers' protest: SC dismisses plea to clear road
The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed a plea seeking directions to the Centre and other authorities to immediately clear blockades on national and state highways in Punjab where farmers are staging protests.
A bench of justices Surya Kant and Manmohan said the matter is already pending before the court and it cannot entertain repetitive petitions on the same issue.
"We are already examining the larger issue. You are not the only conscience keeper of society. Don't file repetitive petitions. Some are filing for publicity interest and some are filing to play to the gallery. We cannot entertain repetitive petitions on the same issue," the bench told petitioner Gaurav Luthra, who claimed to be a social activist in Punjab.
The court also refused Luthra's request to tag the petition with the pending matter. Farmers under the banner of the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (non-political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha have been camping at Shambhu and Khanauri border points between Punjab and Haryana since February 13 after their march to Delhi was stopped by security forces.
The plea has alleged that farmers' and their unions have blocked the entire national and state highways in Punjab for an indefinite period. It sought directions to ensure that national highways and railway tracks are not blocked by the agitating farmers. PTI

Farmers were tear-gassed last week
10:13 Unhappy with INDIA bloc and BJP: Farmers' leader
Farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher on Monday, criticized PM Modi's visit to Haryana, questioning whether the PM will claim his party's election wins as proof of his development approach being effective.
Pandher also cited that farmers are still unhappy with both the INDIA alliance and the ruling BJP government, and urged PM Modi to address the farmers' protest.
"Is he going to claim that as his party is winning the elections the nation should consider his way of development as good? Be it the INDIA alliance or the ruling BJP government, the farmers are not happy with either of them. The farmers have different issues and the youth have their separate issues. The PM is coming (to Haryana) today, so he should take the matter of the farmers' protest in cognizance. He should make such announcements that are in the favour of the farmers," Pandher said.
PM Modi will visit Panipat today to lay the foundation stone for the main campus of Maharana Pratap Horticultural University in Karnal. The campus, covering 495 acres, will cost over Rs 700 crore and will focus on crop diversification and research in horticultural technologies.

09:15 'You can breathe in Syria after Assad'
There was a snarl of cars when we arrived. We could hear chanting. Someone was waving a rebel flag. Overnight news that Damascus had fallen and Syria's president had fled spurred Syrians in Lebanon to rush to Masnaa, the border crossing closest to their capital, reports the BBC.
We'd been planning to spend a day reporting from there, but packed a small overnight bag when we heard the Syrians had abandoned their side. Maybe we would be able to get to Damascus ourselves.
Amid the excitement around us was a tall man with curly hair who was trying to go the other way. I could see he was crying.
He told me his name was Hussein and that he was a supporter of President Bashar al-Assad. He was afraid.
"We don't know anything about what is going to happen inside. They might kill us, it's chaos," he said.
"Anybody who used to work with the regime or the army, they say they are going to give them a safe exit, but nobody knows. If it's not going to be true, they're going to pay the consequences."

08:59 Sebis Stealth Op On Shadow Players
Social media platforms are flooded with advertisements for online stock market tutorials and crash courses. These courses often lure students with low fees but later charge extra for stock tips.
However, providing unregistered investment advice is illegal under Sebi regulations. To combat this, regulatory officials go undercover as 'mystery students' to monitor these courses and take action when they suspect wrongdoing.
"We cannot take action against every single entity, but we do go undercover as mystery students to gather evidence. If we receive a complaint or have reason to suspect misconduct, we will take action," explained an official.
Sebi has previously acted against several such entities, issuing orders and penalties.

08:58 Market Timers Reset: New Expiry Clock Is Ticking
The National Stock Exchange, has announced changes to the 'expiry day' for its index derivatives contracts. Starting January 1, all monthly contracts for Bank Nifty, Nifty Financial Services, Nifty Midcap Select, and Nifty Next 50 will expire on the last Thursday of each month.
Currently, expiry dates are spread across various days of the week. Similarly, BSE has moved the expiry of all its index derivatives to the last Tuesday of the month.
These announcements follow the Sebi's recent measures to curb excessive volumes and speculation in the futures and derivatives markets. Experts believe this move will reduce the frenzy surrounding zero-day options and discourage speculative trading in the derivatives segment. Despite suffering heavy losses, retail investors continue to make highly speculative bets in the derivatives market, with an average holding period of less than 30 minutes.

08:40 Days before term ends, RBI Guv meets FM
Ruchika Chitravanshi/Business Standard
Reserve Bank of India Governor Shaktikanta Das met Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday evening, a day after the meeting of the Monetary Policy Committee and just ahead of his term coming to an end on Tuesday.
The meeting took place at the FMs North Block office.
Sources said the meeting lasted around 20 minutes and was considered customary, post the MPC meeting.
The Centre had announced a three-year extension to Das tenure in 2021, a month before his term came to an end, making him one of the longest serving RBI governors in its 90-year history.
The RBIs six-member MPC on Friday had decided to keep the policy repo rate unchanged at 6.5 per cent -- a status quo for the 11th straight time -- maintaining a 'neutral' stance. It had lowered the 2024-2025 GDP growth projection to 6.6 per cent from 7.2 per cent.
The December policy review came against the backdrop of the GDP growth rate declining to 5.4 per cent in the July-September quarter.
Also, retail inflation breached the central banks tolerance band of 2-6 per cent to stand at a 14-month high of 6.2 per cent in October.
'The MPC remains committed to restoring a balance between inflation and growth, which got unsettled recently,' Das said, indicating that the near-term inflation and growth outcomes in India had turned somewhat adverse since the October policy.
There has been a seeming discomfiture within the government over higher interest rates impinging economic growth with a slowdown, particularly in urban demand.
Sitharaman had recently called on banks to make interest rates more affordable, describing the current high cost of borrowing as 'very stressful'.
Her comments came days after Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal made a case for the RBI to cut interest rates to boost economic growth by looking through the high food inflation while deciding on monetary policy.
