23:01 Telangana may lift 2-child policy for rural polls
The Telangana government is likely to decide on a proposal to lift the restriction barring individuals with more than two children from contesting rural local body polls, after deciding on quotas for the elections.
Ruling Congress sources on Tuesday said the issue will likely be addressed after the caste census is completed and a decision on reservations for rural local body polls is made.

Aviation regulator Directorate General of Civil Aviation slapped a Rs 10 lakh penalty on Akasa Air for failing to provide compensation on time to some passengers who were denied boarding at the Bangalore airport in September, according to a source.
In recent months, the more than two-and-a-half-year-old airline has come under the scanner of the regulator for certain alleged violations.

Later, the passengers were moved to an Indigo flight with a scheduled departure time of 2240 hours which was more than one hour of the scheduled departure time of the actual Akasa flight.
The source said that no compensation was paid to the passengers which was non-compliance with DGCA norms.
In an order dated December 23, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation said Akasa Air initiated the process of providing compensation to the passengers concerned only after the regulator issued a show cause notice, as per the source.

16:05 No arbitrary changes in Maha voters list: EC to Cong
Amid concerns flagged by the Congress, the Election Commission on Tuesday said there were no arbitrary additions or deletions of voters in Maharashtra where assembly polls were held recently.
In its response to the Congress, the poll authority said it would not be correct to compare 5 pm voter turnout data with final polling data.
It also explained how increase in voter turnout from 5 pm to 11.45 pm was normal, being part of the process of aggregation of voter turnout and how there can be bona fide but inconsequential differences in votes polled and votes counted.
The EC asserted that it is impossible to change actual voter turnout as statutory Form 17C giving details of voter turnout is available with authorised agents of candidates at the time of close of poll at the polling station itself.
It said rule-based process was followed with transparency in Maharashtra electoral roll preparation and there were no irregular pattern in voter deletions in the state.

14:35 Cong challenges amendments to election rules in SC
The Congress on Tuesday filed a writ petition in the Supreme Court challenging the recent amendments to the Conduct of Election Rules, 1961 and expressed hope that the apex court will help restore the 'fast eroding' integrity of the electoral process.
The government has tweaked an election rule to prevent public inspection of certain electronic documents such as CCTV camera and webcasting footage as well as video recordings of candidates to prevent their misuse.
All India Congress Committee general secretary Jairam Ramesh, who filed the petition, said, 'The integrity of the electoral process is fast eroding. Hopefully the Supreme Court will help restore it.'
'A writ has just been filed in the Supreme Court challenging the recent amendments to the Conduct of Election Rules, 1961,' he said in a post on X.
Ramesh said the Election Commission, a Constitutional body charged with the conduct of free and fair elections cannot be allowed to unilaterally, and without public consultation, amend such a vital law in such a brazen manner.
'This is especially true when that amendment does away with public access to essential information that makes the electoral process more transparent and accountable,' he said.
Based on the recommendation of the Election Commission of India, the Union law ministry on Friday amended Rule 93(2)(a) of the Conduct of Election Rules, 1961, to restrict the type of 'papers' or documents open to public inspection. -- PTI
14:31 Budaun court to decide on hearing mandir-masjid plea on Jan 18
A court will on January 18 decide whether it will hear a plea claiming the existence of Neelkanth temple at the Jama Masjid Shamsi mosque site in Budaun.
Civil judge (senior sivision) Amit Kumar posted the matter of January 18, 2025 when it will decide whether the matter would be heard or not, advocate Ved Prakash Sahu, representing the Hindu side said on December 23.
Lawyers from both sides had put forth their respective sides on December 17.
The lawyer said he court did not pass any decision and fixed January 18 as the date owing to the ensuing district bar association elections.
The dispute started in 2022 when Mukesh Patel, the then convener of Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha, claimed the temple existed at the mosque site and sought permission to worship in the structure.
On December 12, the Supreme Court restrained all the courts in the country from entertaining and passing any effective interim or final orders on any lawsuits seeking reliefs including survey of religious places under the Places of Worship (Special Provisions) Act, 1991.
The direction of a bench comprising Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justices Sanjay Kumar and K V Viswanathan came on a batch of pleas and cross pleas relating to the Places of Worship (Special Provisions) Act, 1991.
The Jama Masjid Shamsi is built on an elevated area called Sotha Mohalla and is considered the highest structure in the town of Budaun.
It is also believed to be the third oldest existing and seventh largest mosque in the country with a capacity to accommodate 23,500 people. -- PTI

13:26 Israel's big admission: Killed Haniyeh, will hit...
In the first acknowledgement of Israel's involvement in the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, Israel Defence Minister Israel Katz on Monday, issued a stern warning to the Houthi rebels from Yemen of destroying their infrastructure and 'decapitating' its leaders.
Hamas leader Hanieyh's killing came hours after top Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr was killed in an Israeli air attack on the southern suburbs of Lebanon's capital, Beirut, on July 31.
Yahya Sinwar replaced Haniyeh as the group's military chief. Sinwar was also killed in an Israeli military operation in southern Gaza on October 16.
In another major killing, Hassan Nasrallah, the Hezbollah chief was also killed by Israel.
At a commemoration event for local security officers, Katz said, "We will strike [the Houthis'] strategic infrastructure and decapitate its leaders. Just as we did to Haniyeh, Sinwar, and Nasrallah, in Tehran, Gaza and Lebanon -- we will do in Hodeidah and Sanaa."
Israeli Defence Minister also admitted to overthrowing the regime of Bashar al-Assad in Syria.
Opposition forces, led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), launched a strong offensive from the northwestern province of Idlib in November.
They reached Damascus in the early hours of December 8 and announced the end of more than 50 years of the al-Assad family's iron-fist rule over Syria.
Katz added, "We have overthrown the Assad regime in Syria, we have dealt heavy blows to the 'axis of evil,' and we will also severely strike the Houthi terror organization in Yemen, which remains the last one standing."
Earlier in August, Iran's Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) had said that Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was killed by Israel using a short-range projectile with a warhead and plans to take revenge "at the appropriate time.
The statement by Iran's Revolutionary Guards on Saturday also accuses the criminal government of the United States of supporting the attack, which Iran blames on Israel.
"This terrorist attack was designed and implemented by the Zionist regime (Israel) and supported by the criminal government of America," the IRNA news agency quoted the statement as saying.
As per the statement, a rocket with a seven-kilogram warhead was used to target the residence of Haniyeh state media IRNA had reported.
It said the attack caused heavy devastation. The IRGC statement also emphasised that it would 'avenge blood of Haniyeh', adding that 'the terrorist and adventurist Zionist regime would definitely receive severe punishment and a decisive response at appropriate time and in proper place'. -- ANI

10:51 Navi Mumbai man arrested 33 yrs after wife's murder
The Navi Mumbai police have arrested a 70-year-old man absconding since the last 33 years after allegedly killing his wife, an official said on Tuesday.
The accused, Babu Gudgiram Kale, was apprehended on Sunday near Mulund suburb in neighbouring Mumbai, where he had been working as a labourer and selling flowers for livelihood, he said.
The case dates back to January 28, 1991, when Kale, following frequent domestic disputes with his wife, allegedly doused her with kerosene and set her on fire at his home in Panvel area of Navi Mumbai, Panvel Town police station's senior inspector Nitin Thackeray said.
The woman later succumbed to severe burn injuries while undergoing treatment at a hospital, he said.
An FIR was subsequently registered against Kale under Indian Penal Code section 302 (murder) and a local court issued an arrest warrant against him, the official said.
Kale, however, evaded capture and remained in hiding for more than three decades.
The police pursued several leads, employing both intelligence and technical inputs to track the fugitive. Initial tips indicated his presence in Mulund area of Mumbai.

The accused was caught off guard when the police apprehended him on Sunday, he said.
Following his arrest, Kale was produced before a local magistrate who remanded in police custody till January 3, 2025, the police said. -- PTI
10:48 Bangladesh launches graft probe against Hasina
An anti-graft panel in Bangladesh has launched an investigation against former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and her family in connection with the allegations of embezzling $5 billion in the Rooppur nuclear power plant, according to a media report.
Indian companies are participating in constructing the Rooppur nuclear power plant which is being built by Rosatom, Russia's state-run corporation, in Bangladesh.
The first Bangladeshi nuclear power plant, the Russian-designed Rooppur, is being built 160 km west of the Bangladeshi capital of Dhaka.
Along with Hasina, her son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, and Tulip Siddiq, her niece and the UK's Treasury minister, were also questioned, BDNews reported on Sunday.
There are accusations of embezzling $5 billion in the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant project, the report added.
The development came two days after the high court issued a rule asking why the Anti-Corruption Commission's (ACC) inaction over an alleged transfer of $5 billion from the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant project to a Malaysian bank by Hasina, Joy, and Tulip should not be declared illegal, the report added.
According to ACC documents, the allegations of corruption in the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant project were brought to light by Bobby Hajjaj, chairman of the National Democratic Movement (NDM).
Hasina, 77, has been living in India since August 5 when she fled the country following a massive student-led protest that toppled her 16-year regime.
Her sister Rehana accompanied her.
Joy resides in the US, while her niece Tulip is a member of the British parliament.
Bangladesh-based International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has issued arrest warrants for Hasina and several former Cabinet ministers, advisers, and military and civil officials for 'crimes against humanity and genocide'.
They are also named in multiple murder cases filed in connection with the demonstrations. -- PTI

09:43 Rupee hits all-time low of 85.16 against US dollar
The rupee fell 5 paise to hit a new all-time low of 85.16 against the US dollar in early trade on Tuesday, amid strengthening American currency and sustained outflow of foreign capital.
Forex traders said higher dollar demand as well as an upward momentum in crude oil prices due to volatile geopolitical situation pushed the local unit further downward even as a positive domestic equity market provided some cushion.
They said the strong dollar and soaring bond yields in the US prompted the foreign investors towards profit-booking by selling Indian equities.
At the interbank foreign exchange, the rupee opened at 85.10 and slid further to hit a fresh all-time low of 85.16 against the greenback, registering a loss of 5 paise from its previous closing level.
On Monday, the rupee settled 7 paise lower at 85.11 against the US dollar.
Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, was trading higher by 0.10 per cent at 107.92, amid soaring US Treasury yields and the fear of delayed interest rate cuts by the US Federal Reserve.
Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, rose 0.30 per cent to $72.85 per barrel in futures trade.
On the domestic equity market front, the 30-share benchmark index Sensex was trading marginally higher by 15.97 points, or 0.02 per cent at 78,556.14 points.
The Nifty was up 13.70 points, or 0.06 per cent, at 23,767.15 points.
