20:20   HC quashes special court nod to Indrani Mukerjea to travel abroad
The Bombay high court on Friday quashed an order passed by a special court granting permission to former media executive Indrani Mukerjea, accused of killing her daughter Sheena Bora, to travel abroad.

A single bench of Justice Shyam Chandak allowed a petition by the Central Bureau of Investigation against the special court order on the grounds that Mukerjea was facing trial for a serious offence and that there was a possibility of her fleeing the country.

"The petition is allowed. The impugned order is set aside," the court said.

A special CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) court had on July 19 allowed Mukerjea to travel once to Europe (Spain and UK) for ten days between intermittent periods over the next three months.

Mukerjea had sought permission to travel abroad claiming that she needed to change certain bank-related documents and other ancillary work after her divorce with former media honcho Peter Mukerjea.

Justice Chandak said that if Indrani Mukerjea wants to carry out the work from India then the statutory authority concern shall help her. -- PTI

19:05   Charges against RG Kar ex-principal can get death sentence: Court
A designated Central Bureau of Investigation court, denying bail to former RG Kar Medical College and Hospital principal Sandip Ghosh, has observed that the nature and gravity of the accusation against him is grave and it can attract capital punishment if proved.

The CBI had arrested Ghosh and former officer in-charge of Tala police station, Abhijit Mondal, for alleged tampering of evidence and delay in filing of FIR in the rape and murder of a doctor at the state-run hospital on August 9.

Denying the bail prayer of Ghosh, additional chief judicial magistrate S Dey observed that the nature and gravity of the accusation is grave and if proved, it may attract capital punishment, which is handed in the rarest of rare cases.

The judge said the court is of the opinion that "it would be injustice flouting the principle of equity to release the accused on bail'. -- PTI

Sending out a stern message, the Election Commission on Friday sought an explanation from the Maharashtra chief secretary and the state's police chief for failing to fully implement its orders on the transfer of officials ahead of the upcoming assembly polls.

In a strongly-worded letter, the poll body said despite a directive issued on July 31 to relocate officials who had served in their home districts or current posting for over three years, the state administration had not completed the process.

According to the Election Commission's mandate, the compliance report was due by August 31.

While the additional director general of police submitted a partial report, the chief secretary is yet to provide a full response.

Sources noted that more than 100 inspector-level officers in Mumbai and revenue officials, many holding key positions in the state, had not been transferred as required.

Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar expressed his displeasure over the state administration's non-compliance, stating that the delay undermined efforts to ensure a free and fair electoral process. -- PTI

A man who allegedly defrauded thousands of people in Maharashtra of more than Rs 300 crore was nabbed after he was found living in the guise of a seer in Mathura to evade his arrest, police said Friday.

Baban Vishwanath Shinde was held near the Krishna Balaram Temple in Vrindavan in a joint operation by the Vrindavan and Beed district police, they said. According to police officers in Mathura, Shinde was wanted in connection with multiple FIRs of fraud totalling around Rs 300 crore.

15:42   Rahul is Goebbels of Indian politics: BJP
BJP spokesperson CR Kesavan on Friday slammed Rahul Gandhi, comparing him to Joseph Goebbels, the propaganda minister for Hitler. Kesavan called Gandhi the "deceptive and dishonest Goebbels of Indian politics," accusing him of spreading misinformation.

He said, "Yesterday, you saw how Mr. Rahul Gandhi tried to fabricate falsehoods from his fake factory," referring to what he called Gandhi's "malicious Goebbels-like bogus propaganda."

"Because he is nervous and he is panicking. He knows that the two crore voters of Haryana have decided to repose their faith in the tried and trusted government of the BJP. At the same time, he also knows that the voters of Haryana have understood and will never vote for the 'anti-farmer,' 'anti-reservation,' and 'pro-corruption' Congress party," the BJP spokesperson said.

He addressed Rahul Gandhi's comments regarding representation for OBCs, Dalits, and SC/ST communities, pointing out that the current Chief Minister of Haryana is from the OBC community.

"Our president is from the tribal community, whose candidates the Congress opposed. The Chief Information Commissioner for the first time in the history of India is from the Dalit community," he added.

Kesavan also accused the Congress party of being anti-reservation and claimed they wanted to end quotas for marginalised communities.

15:29   High command will decide Haryana CM pick: Hooda
Predicting a "massive mandate" for the Congress in the Haryana Assembly polls, former chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda on Friday said the final decision on the chief ministerial pick would be taken by the party high command and it would be acceptable to him.

Dismissing talk of infighting, Hooda said the Congress was united in Haryana and claimed that the party would derive more strength from having multiple claimants for the chief minister's post.

In an interview with PTI, Hooda also made it clear that he was a claimant for the chief minister's post ahead of his son Deepender Hooda, asserting that he was "neither tired nor retired".

Asked about senior leaders Kumari Selja and Randeep Surjewala also airing their chief ministerial ambitions, Hooda said, "It is a good thing. If you do not have 'ichcha (ambition)' in politics, then your politics will become stagnant. More the claimants, more the strength we (Congress) will derive," he said.

Talking about the Congress' chances in the polls, the 77-year-old leader said, "I am travelling across the state and we are getting tremendous support from all sections. On the basis of that, I can say that people have made up their minds -- 'abki baar Congress ki sarkar'." -- PTI

15:13   Woman held for roaming in skimpy clothes in Indore
The police in Madhya Pradesh's Indore on Friday registered a case against a woman following an outcry from various quarters over her roaming in skimpy clothes at the famous food street '56 Dukaan'.

A first information report under section 296 (obscene act in a public place) of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita has been registered against the woman who allegedly roamed at '56 Dukaan' in short clothes, Tukoganj police station in-charge Jitendra Singh Yadav said.

Local women's organisations and social and cultural outfits lodged complaints against the woman, he said.

14:40   Bangladeshi fan heckled at Kanpur during 2nd Test
A Bangladeshi cricket fan was allegedly heckled in the stands and taken to a medical facility during the opening day of the second Test against India in Kanpur on Friday but there was no clarity on what triggered the incident.

The man, who calls himself super fan Roby, was dressed in a tiger costume and sitting in stand C when the incident happened.

An Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association official said Roby could not communicate the exact sequence of events but it was clear that he was in distress. During an interaction with media, he indicated that he had been punched in his abdomen during an altercation.

"As he came out of the stands, he was wincing in pain and seemed to be fainting. He was given a chair to sit but he fell," the official said. A police officer present at the stadium said the fan was provided first aid and an ambulance was called for him.

"We do not know if he was hit by somebody. We have a constable in that stand to keep an eye on the fans. We could not understand what he was saying. Probably he had pain. "The ambulance was taking some time to arrive so the in-stadia medical team has taken him to a nearby facility," the officer said. PTI

14:37   Why Badlapur accused's family want to bury body
The Bombay High Court on Friday directed the police to identify a secluded spot for the burial of the body of Akshay Shinde, accused in the Badlapur sexual assault case, who was killed in a police shootout.

A division bench of Justices Revati Mohite Dere and M M Sathaye said once the spot is identified, the police shall inform Shinde's family members about it so that the burial can be done.

The HC rejected the contention of the prosecution that there is no custom of burying bodies in Shinde's community, calling it his parents' choice. Shinde's father on Friday moved an urgent application seeking a burial spot for his son.

The father claimed that they were unable to find a burial ground for Shinde. Public Prosecutor Hiten Venegaonkar told the court that all burial grounds in Badlapur and neighbouring areas have refused and opposed the burial of Shinde.

The police would take steps to identify a secluded spot for the burial, Venegaonkar told the court. He added that the police will also ensure that no untoward incident occurs. The family will be informed about the same. But they need not make an event out of it. Let them do it silently. The family members will be taken (to burial spot) with police staff, Venegaonkar said.

The bench accepted this statement and posted the matter for hearing on September 30.

Venegaonkar further claimed that police enquired and found out that there was no such custom of burying in Shinde's community. Our enquiry has found that there is no such custom of burial.

The family's lawyer made a comment that they are burying only so that there is the option of exhumation in future. All senior members of their community themselves have said there is no such custom, he said.

14:23   Does Rahul know full form of MSP: Amit Shah
Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday trained his guns on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, asking if he knew the full form of MSP as he underlined that the BJP government in Haryana was procuring 24 crops at the minimum support price.

Addressing a poll rally in Rewari, Haryana, Shah also attacked the Congress on the issue of corruption and reservation.

Slamming the Congress on farmers' issue, he said some NGO has told Rahul 'baba' that by saying MSP (minimum support price) he will get votes. "Rahul baba, do you know full form of MSP. Which crop is of Kharif, which one is of Rabi, do you know," he asked.

Shah said the BJP government in Haryana is procuring 24 crops at MSP. "Let Congress leaders in Haryana tell which Congress-ruled state procures as many crops," he said. "How many crops bought at MSP in Karnataka and Telangana," he asked.

"During Congress rule, paddy was procured at Rs 1300 per quintal, now it is Rs 2300 and if you elect BJP government in Haryana, we will procure paddy at Rs 3,100 (per quintal)," he said.

Further attacking the Congress, Shah said it was the Narendra Modi government which fulfilled the long pending demand of One Rank One Pension. Shah said the BJP undertook equitable development in Haryana and corruption has finished in the last 10 years.

"Congress governments used to run on the basis of cut, commission and corruption while dealers, dalals (middlemen) and 'damads' used to rule. Under BJP government, there are no dealers, 'dalals' while there is no question of 'damad'," the senior BJP leader said.

He said that while the world is facing medium-term uncertainties with global trade slowing to a crawl, post-COVID recovery in India is now cemented due to calibrated fiscal and monetary policies pursued by the government.

"Post-COVID recovery in India is cemented due to prudent macro-economic management which laid the foundation of economic growth with stability," he said.

Nageswaran said that there is no vulnerability in the current account balance of the country with domestic financial markets and the banking system in good health.

12:48   UP student sacrificed for school's success
An 11-year-old child was killed as part of an alleged sacrificial ritual performed by the owners of his school in Uttar Pradesh's Hathras to make it more prosperous, police said on Friday.

Besides the owner and director of the school, the principal and two teachers were also arrested for their alleged involvement in the incident, they said. Police said the postmortem report of the class two student revealed that he was strangled.

DL Public School owner Jasodhan Singh, who is said to believe in 'tantrik rituals', asked his son Dinesh Baghel, the director of the school, to sacrifice a child for the prosperity of the school and his family.

Principal Laxman Singh and two teachers -- Ramprakash Solanki and Veerpal Singh -- have also been held by police. Police has lodged an FIR against them under the section 103 (1) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita 2023, against five of them and they have been sent to jail.

"The student has been identified as Kritarth (11) studying in class second of the DL Public school," Ashok Kumar Singh, Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP), Hathras told PTI.

"On September 23, the student was abducted from the school's hostel by teacher Ramprakash Solanki, Dinesh Baghel and school owner Jasodhan Singh. Jasodhan Singh believes in 'tantra' practice and asked his son to sacrifice a child for the prosperity of school and his family," he said.

"They took the student to a secluded place for the sacrifice but the student woke up and began crying, the officer said.

"After that he was strangulated. Another teacher Veerpal Singh and school principal Laxman Singh were also present at the spot and were guarding the place," he said.

Police further said that the accused told the child's parents that Kritarth was not well as was being taken to a hospital in Baghel's car. Family members of the child, however, stopped the car and informed police about Kritarth's death, police said. Later, postmortem report showed that he died due to strangulation.

11:55   No burial spot for Badlapur accused, dad moves HC
The father of the accused in the Badlapur sexual assault case, who was killed in an alleged police shootout earlier this week, on Friday moved the Bombay High Court seeking a burial spot for his son.

The father's advocate mentioned the application before a division bench of Justices Revati Mohite Dere and M M Sathaye seeking urgent intervention. The court said it would hear the plea in the afternoon.

In his application, the father has sought the court's direction to the local civic body to arrange a spot to bury his son Akshay Shinde. Shinde, 24, was arrested of last month for allegedly sexually assaulting two minor girls at a school in Badlapur town, Thane district.

Earlier this week, he was being escorted to Badlapur from Taloja jail in connection with a case registered against him on a complaint by his second wife when the alleged shootout occurred, resulting in his death. The incident took place near the Mumbra Bypass in Thane on Monday evening after Shinde allegedly snatched the gun of a policeman. He was killed in retaliatory firing by the police. Shinde's father had filed a petition in the high court claiming that his son was killed in a fake encounter and sought an HC-monitored probe into his death.

On Wednesday, the bench headed by Justice Dere had raised several questions over the incident.

Emphasising the need for a fair and impartial probe, it noted that the incident could have been avoided.

On Thursday, the family claimed that Shinde had in the past expressed his desire to be buried instead of cremated. Shinde's body has been kept at the mortuary of a civic hospital in Thane's Kalwa area.

According to Shinde's family, finding a burial site for him was proving challenging as local residents and organisations have voiced opposition. Earlier in the day, while speaking to a Marathi news channel, the counsel for the Shinde family Amit Katarnavre said that the Constitution provides certain rights for bodies, and they will approach the HC to seek protection for those rights. The Odisha government has decided to grant maternity and paternity leaves to employees opting for surrogacy, an official notification said.

According to the notification issued by the state Finance Department on Thursday night, female employees can avail of 180 days of leave while male staffers will be entitled to 15 days of paternity leave.

This benefit has been extended to both surrogate and commissioning mothers and the commissioning father, it said. The state government's decision in this regard came after the Centre extended maternity and paternity leave benefits to its employees attaining parenthood by surrogacy.

A state government female employee, having less than two surviving children, who becomes a surrogate mother, will be eligible for maternity leave of 180 days, it said.

10:45   Saif: For social media, I say, 'darling would you?'
Actor Saif Ali Khan said social media can consume a person into negativity and can be dangerous for the person like him. Khan, who is absent from popular social media platforms like X and Instagram, said they consume too much time of a person that can be utilised for doing something more concrete.

"Personally, I think it's too time consuming. Sometimes I surf Instagram, and I spend half an hour reading the most inane things. And my wife said I'm not following the right things. Then I deleted the app because I feel I've wasted a lot of time compared to something I could be reading in a book or doing something more concrete with my time.

"It's (social media) never ending. It can really suck you in. I don't like that because it's dangerous for someone like me. Also, I don't want to engage too much with negativity, which also can happen. So sometimes I find that this is just not for me," Khan said.

The 54-year-old actor was speaking at the India Today Mumbai Conclave 2024 on Thursday evening. Khan said if he ever joins a social media platform, then he would start taking it too seriously.

"I mean, how would I do it? Is it just showing off about my life? And then, how would that make people feel? Would it be fake? Or would I say, how do I present the best picture of myself? And then before I know it, I've kind of gone slightly mad doing this. And I don't know because I would take it too seriously," he said.

He further said he feels content with the work he is doing and money he is making in life.

"I like the balance between work and holidays and kind of how to relax. And I feel quite at peace. I'm also okay with nothing looking over my shoulder at what someone else is doing and comparing to that. And I think a lot of Instagram also is about comparing.

"I get a bit stressed out doing that. Like, What's he doing? Why aren't I?' And then forget it. Delete it. Read a book or learn some song on the guitar or plan a holiday or cook something. So, I engage well with life. I have quite a busy life, and I just don't see this (social media) as part of it," Khan added.

The actor, who is married to Bollywood star Kareena Kapoor Khan, counted among the most followed celebrities in India, said not being on social media is currently cool thing and doesn't affect his brand value as an artist.

"I live with someone who does (post on social media), and it's fabulous. If I ever need any posting, I'll give her a nudge and say, darling, will you please?' And before I know it, it's gone to many millions of people, but it's not something I do very often," he said.

10:12   Congress will wipe Dev's tears: Rahul in Haryana
Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, ahead of the upcoming Haryana elections, on Thursday slammed the state government in a public rally for the lack of employment opportunities that cause youth to migrate.

During his address, the Congress leader used examples from the struggles of children whose parents migrate to America and get stuck there with no prospects of returning. The Lok Sabha's Leader of Opposition shared the story of a boy named Dev, who cried out for his father.

He said, "Dev's trembling cry - 'Papa, come back!' - was heart-rending."

Gandhi noted that while Dev's cry might not reach Prime Minister Modi's heart, it has impacted him deeply.

"It is the duty of the Congress party to stop these cries, wipe these tears, and ensure a happy life with their families by giving proper opportunities to the youth of Haryana within the state itself - and we will do it!", the Congress leader said.

He criticised the Modi government for failing to meet the needs of the people.

He said, "What is the benefit? Narendra Modi is being marketed and Dev is shouting, screaming to bring back his father."

He added, "I was thinking that when I go home, I will send some toys for Dev. Then I thought, what do toys mean to him? What will he do with a football? What will he do with a cricket bat? All he wants is his father. This is the condition of Haryana, and we want to change this."

Gandhi then urged for a change in Haryana, where families can live without fear and sorrow. He added, "We want such a Haryana where children do not cry, where a father can hug his child and a mother does not cry," he said.

To achieve this, he laid out several promises, including financial support for women and jobs for the youth.

He said, "The first step is Mahila Shakti, Rs2000 per month to women and a gas cylinder worth Rs500. The second step is that we will fill the two lakh vacancies that are lying vacant in the government for the youth and give them to you."

He also promised to guarantee Minimum Support Prices (MSP) for farmers and provide immediate insurance money for losses. "Housing for the poor will include a 100-yard plot and Rs1.5 lakh, three lakh rupees for two houses, two rooms, two bedrooms, and 300 units of free electricity," he added.

09:34   Want to get a phone this festival season?
It is not just new smartphone launches that will highlight festival-season sales this year; refurbished mobile phones are also seeing a demand surge.

Platforms that sell refurbished smartphones, such as Flipkart, Cashify and Grest, are reporting strong demand, particularly for high-end devices like iPhones.

This growth in the refurbished market -- also called recommerce market -- is driven by a rise in demand for premium smartphones, mainly the Apple iPhone series and Samsung Galaxy S series, as they become more accessible to consumers at significantly lower prices.Affordability, various financial options, and improved after-sales services from sellers are some of the key drivers of this segment.

"Volumes (of refurbished smartphones) are likely to keep increasing as demand increases. A large number of consumers want better devices and are willing to pay for them," says Glen Cardoza, senior research analyst, Counterpoint.

According to a report by consulting firm Redseer, the refurbished electronics market in India could grow to $11 billion in gross value by March 2026. With the festival season around the corner, companies in this space are expecting a significant surge in sales. Larger players are also anticipating growth. E-commerce giant Flipkart, for example, recently launched its own business-to-business (B2B) app for refurbished devices called 'Flipkart Reset for Business'.

"The rise in demand for refurbished devices is driven by several factors. Affordability is a major driver, as refurbished products offer a cost-effective alternative to new devices, appealing particularly to budget-conscious consumers in India's Tier-II and -III cities," says Ashutosh Singh Chandel, senior director and business head for recommerce at Flipkart.

"Additionally, the quality assurance provided by Flipkart Reset for Business, including rigorous testing and comprehensive warranties, helps alleviate consumer scepticism about refurbished products," adds Chandel.

Currently, Flipkart Reset sells smartphones and accessories and serves over 800 cities across 29 states.

Cashify, one of India's largest recommerce players, reported a 444 per cent increase in revenue from refurbished smartphone sales in 2023. The company also recorded 25 per cent growth in its buyback business.

The company attributes the surge to promotions, warranty offers, financing schemes, and increased awareness of the advantages of refurbished devices.

"We are witnessing a transformative moment in new launches, characterised by artificial intelligence, 5G, the emergence of foldable phones, and a growing focus on sustainability,' says Mandeep Manocha, co-founder and CEO, Cashify.

09:13   Soldiers to be protected by lightweight bullet-proof jackets
On orders from the ministry of defence (MoD), the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has established collaborative research facilities called DRDO-industry-academia Centres of Excellence (DIA-CoE), at premier academic institutes in the country.

These include 'directed research ecosystems' that pursue collaboration among DRDO laboratories, and the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi).

'DIA-CoEs will pursue research both in developing cutting-edge technologies and in the areas of denied defence technologies,' says its Web site.

Announcing success on Wednesday, in the critical field of personal protection, the MoD said: 'DRDO along with researchers of IIT Delhi has developed light weight bullet-proof jackets named ABHED (advanced ballistics for high energy defeat). The jackets have been developed at the DIA-CoE at IIT Delhi.

"For decades, Indian soldiers have been taking casualties for the shortfall of bullet-proof jackets that can absorb the impact of bullets fired by terrorists and Pakistan army soldiers. That will no longer be so."

"The armour plates for the jackets have passed all necessary R&D trials as per the protocols. The jackets meet the highest threat levels, and are lighter than the maximum weight limits stipulated [by] the Indian Army. With minimum possible weight of 8.2 kg and 9.5 kg for different BIS Levels, these modular-design jackets having front and rear armour provide 360-degree protection," stated an MoD release.

Describing the breakthrough, the MoD said: "These jackets have been created from polymers and indigenous boron carbide ceramic material. The design configuration is based on characterisation of various materials at high strain rate followed by appropriate modelling and simulation in collaboration with DRDO."

Manufacture of the bullet-proof jackets will be done by the private sector, said the MoD. "Based on the selection-criteria matrix, some Indian industries were shortlisted for transfer of technology and handholding. The Centre is ready to transfer the technology to three industries."
