Shiv Sena-UBT president Uddhav Thackeray on Tuesday claimed his bags were inspected by election authorities after he arrived in Latur district of Maharashtra to campaign for the November 20 assembly polls.

This is the second consecutive day that the former chief minister's party posted a video on a social media platform about his bags being checked by the poll authorities.

On Monday, he said that after his helicopter landed at Wani in Yavatmal district, his bag was checked by the authorities.

The Shiv Sena-UBT posted a video of poll authorities' act on its X handle.

In the video, Thackeray is heard asking the election officials their names and their posting while they are checking his bags.

During his interaction with them, the Sena-UBT chief is heard asking them, "How many people have you searched so far?"

On their response that he is the first one, he says, "I am the first customer then." -- PTI

A quadruple murder case was solved by the Ladakh police 26 years after the crime with the arrest of all three persons from the Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir.

Senior Superintendent of Police Shree Raam said Mohd Ali, Haji Anayat Ali of Kargil and their assistants Shero Ali and Nazir Ahmad of Kathua had gone to the higher reaches of Warwan in J&K's Kishtwar district to purchase livestock in August 1998 but did not return to their homes.

He said a case was registered and three nomads -- Mohd Rafeeq, Mohd Fareed of Kathua and Abdul Aziz of Samba -- were apprehended from Jammu on April 25, 1999 for questioning.

However, all of them were released on bail due to a lack of evidence.

And with not much progress in the case, it was closed as untraced in 2007.

Four years later, on September 9, 2011, skeletal remains were found near the Kanital Glacier in the Warwan area and their DNA testing confirmed they belonged to Nazir Ahmad and Shero Ali, the officer said. -- PTI

22:56   SC to pronounce verdict on pleas for pan-India norms on razing properties
The Supreme Court is scheduled to pronounce its verdict on Wednesday on pleas seeking framing of guidelines on demolition of properties in the country.

A bench headed by Justice BR Gavai had reserved the verdict on October 1.

The top court had said it will lay down pan-India guidelines while making clear that any religious structure in the middle of a road, be it a 'dargah' or a temple, "has to go" because public interest is paramount.

It had said merely because somebody is an accused or even a convict cannot be a ground for demolition of property.

A batch of pleas alleged that properties, including of those accused of crime, were being demolished in several states.

"Whatever we are laying down, we are a secular country. We are laying it down for all the citizens, for all the institutions, not for any particular community," the bench had said.

The top court was hearing the petitions filed by Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind and others seeking directions to various state governments to ensure no further demolition of properties of those accused in cases of rioting and violence takes place.

While hearing the matter earlier, the top court had observed that even one instance of illegal demolition was against the "ethos" of the Constitution. -- PTI

The Allahabad high court on Tuesday granted regular bail to 12 accused in the 2021 Lakhimpur Kheri violence which claimed at least eight lives, and in which former Union minister Ajay Mishra Teni's son Ashish is the main accused.

While approving the release of the accused on bail on Tuesday, the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad high court asked them to cooperate in the trial or their bail would be revoked.

Prime accused Ashish Mishra was already granted regular bail by the Supreme Court in the case earlier this year.

The Allahabad HC bench that granted the bail to the 12 co-accused was presided over by Justice Krishna Pahal.

The court had reserved its decision on October 18 after hearing the case in full and pronounced it on Tuesday via video conferencing from the Court.

In the court, the defense counsel argued that the case involves 114 witnesses, yet only seven have testified so far.

It also argued the Supreme Court has already granted regular bail to prime accused Ashish Mishra.

Parents received the skull of their teenage daughter, who was killed 18 years ago, from a court in Kasaragod, Kerala.

The girl was murdered in Goa and chopped into pieces allegedly by a man from Kasaragod.

The victim Sofia was hailing from Coorg in neighbouring Karnataka and her parents wanted to perform last rites to their daughter, according to their religious customs.

The principal sessions court accepted their request and handed them over the skull of the girl on Monday.

The skull and fragments of bones, which were recovered from an isolated place some time after the death of the girl, became evidence in the case of murder of the teenage girl.

Besides her mother Ayesha and father Moithu, people from Aiyangeri in Coorg, a few close relatives of the deceased girl were also reportedly present when the skull was handed over by the court.

The mortal remains were taken to their native place and buried in a local masjid there on Monday night itself, family sources said.

According to police, 13-year-old Sofia was killed in December, 2006 in Goa while she was serving as a maid in the house of KC Hamsa, a contractor hailing from Kasaragod.

She allegedly suffered severe burns from kitchen and Hamsa, out of fear of punishment, killed the girl and chopped her body into pieces before dumping them in an under-construction dam site in Goa, they said.

The mortal remains were recovered in 2008.

Though the accused was arrested later and a local court sentenced him to death in 2015, the high court commuted his punishment into life imprisonment in 2019. -- PTI

19:37   Uphold fair play, CEC tells observers for Maha polls
Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar on Tuesday asked the Election Commission's central observers deployed for the Maharashtra assembly polls to uphold fair play, respond promptly to candidates' concerns and maintain professional conduct.

At a review meeting held with the central observers for the Maharashtra polls, Kumar directed them to be accessible to all candidates and parties without any favouritism.

"Any complaints in this regard will be viewed seriously," a functionary aware of the deliberations quoted the CEC as saying.

Addressing the observers from the national capital via video conference, he also asked them to maintain strict vigilance over the law-and-order situation and flow of any inducements like drugs, liquor, freebies and cash that can be used to vitiate the election space.

Kumar asserted that checking and screening by enforcement agencies should be done as per the established protocol and in a completely impartial manner, maintaining a level playing field.

Observers should see that central forces and state police forces maintain neutrality and their deployment is not favouring any political party or a candidate, he said.

CEC Kumar was of the view that observers can particularly ensure that the whole election process, specifically the campaign discourse, does not in any manner affect the dignity of women. -- PTI

19:20   Delhi court acquits Jagadish Tytler, Abhishek Verma in forgery case
A Delhi court on Tuesday acquitted Congress leader Jagadish Tytler and controversial arms dealer Abhishek Verma in a 2009 case of allegedly forging the letterhead of then minister of state for home Ajay Maken, a defence lawyer said.

Special Judge Kaveri Baweja acquitted the accused, saying the prosecution failed to prove the case beyond reasonable doubt, advocate Maninder Singh, appearing for Verma, said.

The Central Bureau of Investigation had filed the case on Maken's complaint that a forged letter on his letterhead was written to the then prime minister by Verma seeking easing of business visa norms in 2009.

The CBI in its chargesheet had alleged that the "forgery was done with active connivance" of Tytler with Verma.

The forged letter was given to a China-based telecom firm with the purpose of wrongfully assuring them of visa extension in India, the CBI alleged.

It alleged that Verma had demanded one million dollars from the firm for showing the letter but the money did not exchange hands.

Acting on the complaint of Maken, the CBI had registered a case against Verma under section 469 of the IPC which relates to forgery for the purpose of harming reputation.

The full order is awaited. -- PTI

17:59   Jagan encouraged indecent social media posts on me: YS Sharmila
Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee president YS Sharmila on Tuesday alleged that YSRCP supremo YS Jagan Mohan Reddy encouraged indecent posts against her on social media.

Alleging that she is a victim of vitriolic attacks on social media, Sharmila claimed that those attacks would have stopped had Reddy called for ending them.

Addressing a press conference at Andhra Ratna Bhavan in Vijayawada, Sharmila said, "They (social media activists) spoke as they liked, about me, Sunitha (late YS Vivekananda Reddy's daughter) and mother (YS Vijayamma). Jagan Mohan Reddy himself told them to make those indecent posts."

Observing that social media activists have emerged as a satanic army, she called for action and regulation on this virtual medium.

Though some social media activists have been nabbed, Sharmila said the actual perpetrators behind them should be apprehended and punished stringently.

Reacting to the state budget of Rs 2.94 lakh crore presented on Monday, the Congress president said it was a deceptive one and alleged that people were cheated after getting their votes.

Terming the budget as not a people's budget, she said, "People do not have clarity whether this is a budget or a manifesto. They repeated the statements made during the polls. Budget means allocations but this is a budget without an allocation." -- PTI

17:26   Govt sanctions first all-women reserve battalion for CISF
A first-ever all-women Central Industrial Security Force reserve battalion comprising more than 1,000 personnel has been sanctioned by the Union government keeping in mind the burgeoning duties of the force at airports and other vital installations.

Officials told PTI that the unit will be raised from within the sanctioned manpower of the force of about two lakh personnel.

The Union home ministry issued a sanction order this week approving an exclusive women reserve unit in the force with a total strength of 1,025 personnel led by a senior commandant-rank officer, they said.

The Central Industrial Security Force has 12 reserve battalions under its establishment at present.

As the name suggests, these units are kept in reserve and used as reinforcement when the force gets a new job like temporary duties of conducting elections and permanent tasks of guarding an installation like the Parliament House complex that came under CISF cover this year, an official said.

The force has a huge women interface at facilities like the 68 civil airports that it guards, the Delhi Metro and historical monuments like the Taj Mahal and the Red Fort.

The force had projected a requirement of having an all-women reserve battalion which has been recently sanctioned, a home ministry official said.

Apart from these installations, the 1969-raised CISF provides a counter-terrorist security cover to a number of facilities in the nuclear and aerospace domain apart from those in the private sector like the Infosys offices in Bengaluru and Pune, Reliance refinery in Jamnagar (Gujarat), among others. -- PTI

15:40   Yes, Shah and Nadda's bags also checked: EC
A day after Shiv Sena (UBT) questioned the move of poll authorities to check the bag of party chief Uddhav Thackeray, sources in the Election Commission on Tuesday said aircraft and helicopters of top leaders across political spectrum are checked as part of standard operating procedure (SOP).

They said in the previous polls too, planes and helicopters of BJP president J P Nadda and Home Minister Amit Shah were checked.

"There have been strict SOPs followed by enforcement agencies for a level playing field. During the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, a similar issue was raised in Bihar and it was clarified that the helicopters of prominent leaders, including Nadda was checked in district Bhagalpur on April 24 and Shah in district Katihar on April 21 were also checked as per SOP," a functionary pointed out.

The sources also recalled the statement of Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar during the announcement of ongoing assembly elections that directions have been given to the enforcement agencies to ensure checking of helicopters of all leaders for a level playing field.

Thackeray had on Monday claimed his bag was inspected by the election authorities when he arrived in Maharashtra's Yavatmal to campaign for the November 20 assembly elections. The former chief minister asked if the election authorities would also inspect the bags of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other senior leaders.

The Shiv Sena (UBT) also posted on X a video Thackeray recorded while poll officials were checking his bags on his arrival in Yavatmal. In the video, Thackeray can be heard asking officials if they had similarly inspected the bags of any other senior leader or if they would check PM Modi or Union Home Minister Shah's bags.

The Congress on Tuesday attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the promises made by him for Jharkhand, saying the 'Modi ki Guarantee' campaign fell flat when Lok Sabha polls results came out and the people of Jharkhand will finish whatever is left of it as well on November 13 and 20 Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh listed some of the promises made by the PM and also the current status of the projects.

"Medical College in Koderma: The college was supposed to be built on --70 acres of land and offer 100 MBBS seats. The non-biological PM laid its foundation stone six years ago, in 2018, and then promised to complete the project again in 2019. It is yet to materialize," he said.

Ramesh pointed out that during his campaign for Jharkhand's 2014 assembly elections, Modi had promised a range of industrial and educational projects, including a premier IT institution and several engineering colleges.

However, only two institutions were ever established, National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT Ranchi) and Central Institute of Plastics Engineering and Technology (CIPET Khunti), he said, adding that these too, after nine and seven years respectively, do not have a permanent campus.

"In October 2022, the Railway Ministry sanctioned the Chatra-Gaya rail project but two years later, no progress has been made. BJP leaders have consistently promised the Korba-Lohardaga line, but it has also been given a silent burial," Ramesh said.

"Just ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, the PM laid the foundation stone of the Mandal dam project with great fanfare," he said.

"Conceptualised to address agrarian distress in Jharkhand and Bihar, the project has languished even while the state has suffered back-to-back droughts in recent years," Ramesh claimed.

The Congress leader further said that Jamshedpur had a functional airport until 2016 but despite being inducted into the UDAN scheme in 2018, plans for a new airport have failed to materialise.

"In January 2019, a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed between the Jharkhand Government and the Airports Authority of India for the construction of Dhalbhumgarh Airport by December 2022. This would have been a massive boost to the industrial sector, from major players like Tata to the MSME sector in Adityapur," he said. -- PTI

11:52   Melania may skip traditional meet with Jill Biden
Former US First Lady Melania Trump is not expected to attend the traditional White House meeting with first lady Jill Biden, according to a report by CNN.

This development follows on the heels of Donald Trump's victory in the 2024 US Elections.

As per CNN, the sources familiar with Melania Trump's plans cited a prior scheduling conflict for the former first lady related to her newly released memoir. One source said the decision had not been finalized.

Jill Biden extended Melania Trump the customary invitation last week as her husband also invited the president-elect to the Oval Office, a symbolic gesture to show the country and the world that there will be a peaceful transition of power.

Donald Trump and Joe Biden are set to meet on Wednesday, according to the White House.

There was discussion about encouraging Melania Trump to come to Washington for the meeting, as some members of the president-elect's team felt it was important, the report stated.

Aside from 2020, it has been tradition for the current first lady to host the incoming first lady at the White House. In 2016, then-first lady Michelle Obama hosted Melania Trump for tea in the White House's Yellow Oval Room and took her on a tour of the private residence.

11:20   Nana Patole calls BJP 'dogs' in Akola rally
Maharashtra Congress President Nana Patole has stirred controversy with a purported "dog" jibe against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) criticising its alleged treatment of the OBC community in the Akola district of the State, which is heading to Assembly polls.

Campaigning for the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance, of which Congress is a part of, Patole on Monday, "I want to ask, will the OBC people of Akola district vote for the BJP who are calling you dogs? It is time to make the BJP a dog now; they have become so arrogant."

Patole accused the BJP of disrespecting the OBC community. His remarks are expected to intensify the ongoing political rivalry between the MVA and Mahayuti.

Similar controversies have taken place earlier. Previously Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Arvind Sawant reportedly referred to Shaina NC, a leader who defected from the BJP to the Shiv Sena faction led by Eknath Shinde, as "imported maal."

Sawant criticized her defection, saying, "Look at her condition. She was in the BJP all her life and now she went to another party. Imported 'maal' doesn't work here; only original 'maal' does." Sawant later apologized for his sexist remark.

The gangs include Lawrence Bishnoi-Goldy Brar, Himanshu Bhau, Kapil Sangwan alias Nandu, Jitender Gogi-Sampat Nehra, Hashim Baba, Sunil Tillu, Kaushal Chaudhary, Neeraj Faridpuria and Neeraj Bawana.

The rupee slipped 2 paise to an all-time low of 84.40 against the US dollar in early trade on Tuesday, as persistent foreign fund outflows and strength of the American currency in the overseas market dented investors' sentiments.

Forex traders said the rupee is expected to trade between 83.80 and 84.50 in the medium term with the Reserve Bank of India likely limiting any significant downside, aided by its robust foreign exchange reserves.

08:46   Kharge hostile to Sanatan Dharma: Ex-Cong leader
Acharya Pramod Krishnam, a former Congress leader and Kalki Peethadhishwar, hit out at Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge over his remarks on Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, saying "true Hindus" do not disrespect their religious figures.

Kharge had slammed Adityanath at a poll rally in Nagpur for his 'batenge toh katenge' (if divided, we will be wiped out) slogan, saying these were divisive statements.

A day later at a Jharkhand poll rally, he said, "A true Yogi cannot use language like batenge toh katenge'. This language is used by terrorists. Yogi is head of a mutt, wears saffron robes, but believes in mukh me Ram bagal me chhuri' (A wolf in lamb's clothing).

Kharge said those who truly want a united country should refrain from such statements. Reacting to the Congress president's remarks, Krishnam said on Monday, The name Mallikarjun Kharge suggests he is Hindu, but his actions do not reflect that."

The kind of remarks Kharge has been making indicate a certain hostility towards Sanatan Dharma, he said.

"Those who have animosity towards Sanatan Dharma and saints do not deserve a place in Indian politics. Kharge, a senior leader, should not resort to insulting Hindu saints or Sanatan Dharma or the saffron flag. True Hindus do not disrespect their own religious figures," he said. -- PTI

08:19   Trump's choice for secretary of state is...
President-elect Donald Trump plans to nominate Sen. Marco Rubio to serve as secretary of State, according to two people informed of the decision. If confirmed for the role, Rubio may bring some more traditional GOP views into Trump's foreign policy orbit.

The Florida Republican has hawkish views on many U.S. foes, but he has also championed maintaining alliances, such as NATO. It's unclear whether Rubio would endorse large-scale cuts to the State Department workforce as some Trump allies hope to push through, but he will likely support some reforms to the institution.

Trump has also asked Rep. Mike Waltz to be his national security adviser.

The nod came despite simmering concerns on Capitol Hill about Trump tapping members of the House, where the final tally is still uncertain and there are worries about pulling any GOP members from the chamber because that would force a new election to fill the empty seat. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the matter before Trump made a formal announcement.

More than 15 months after four people were gunned down on a Mumbai-bound train allegedly by a RPF constable, the trial in the case commenced on Monday with a city court recording the testimony of the first witness, who identified the weapon used in the crime.

RPF constable Chetansinh Chaudhary, the lone accused in the case who was later dismissed from service, is accused of fatally shooting his superior officer assistant sub-inspector Tika Ram Meena and three passengers on board the Jaipur-Mumbai Central Superfast Express when the train was on the city's outskirts.

00:32   SC rejects bail plea of ex-MP Prajwal Revanna booked for rape
The Supreme Court on Monday denied bail to former JD-S MP Prajwal Revanna, accused of rape and sexual assault.

Rejecting the plea, a bench of Justices Bela M Trivedi and Satish Chandra Sharma observed Revanna was a "very influential person".

Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, representing the politician, argued that the chargesheet had been filed in the case without the charge of Section 376 (rape) of the IPC.

The bench, however, observed it could not interfere with the Karnataka high court's October 21 decision denying him bail.

Subsequently, Rohatgi sought the liberty to approach the court after six months.

The bench said it could not say anything about it and dismissed the plea. In August, a special investigation team in Karnataka which is probing four cases of sexual assault and harassment against Revanna submitted a 2,144-page chargesheet.

The chargesheet pertains to an alleged rape case against the former MLA. Revanna is the son of Holenarasipura JD-S MLA H D Revanna and the grandson of former prime minister H D Deve Gowda. --PTI
