22:58   MQ-9B Sea Guardian drone encounters 'technical failure'
A high-altitude long-endurance MQ-9B Sea Guardian drone that was taken on lease by the Indian Navy encountered a "technical failure" on Wednesday while on a surveillance mission, officials said.

The drone was operating from naval air station INS Rajali in Arakkonam near Chennai.

In 2020, the Indian Navy had taken on lease two MQ-9B Sea Guardian drones from American defence major General Atomics for a period of one year for surveillance in the Indian Ocean. The lease period has been extended subsequently.

"A high altitude long endurance remotely piloted aircraft leased by the Indian Navy operating from INS Rajali, Arakonnam encountered a technical failure at about 2 pm while on a routine surveillance mission which could not be reset in flight," the Indian Navy said in a statement.

"The aircraft was navigated to a safe area over sea and carried out a controlled ditching at sea off Chennai," it said.

The Navy has sought a detailed report from the OEM or the original equipment maker.

Controlled ditching generally refers to an emergency landing of an aircraft on water.

Since the Navy took two drones on lease, their maintenance was being done by General Atomics.

19:30   Bengal docs reach secretariat for fresh talks
A group of agitating junior doctors on Wednesday evening reached the West Bengal state secretariat Nabanna to hold the second round of talks with the government to resolve the impasse due to the RG Kar issue.

Escorted by a pilot police vehicle, the delegation of around 30 medics reached the secretariat around 7.15 pm. They will hold a meeting with Chief Secretary Manoj Pant.

"We want the issue of safety and security in hospitals to be addressed. The chief minister had announced the formation of a task force, but there is no proper clarity on it. We want the state government to accept our legitimate demands," an agitating doctor said before leaving for the meeting venue.

The West Bengal government on Wednesday invited the junior doctors agitating over the RG Kar rape-murder incident for a meeting at the state secretariat at 6.30 pm, responding to their request for a fresh round of talks.

The scheduled meeting would be the second round of talks between the medics and the state government in 48 hours, the first of which was held in the presence of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday.

Junior doctors agitating over RG Kar rape-murder on Wednesday said they will continue their sit-in and not join duty, despite the state appointing Manoj Kumar Verma as the new Kolkata Police chief, replacing Vineet Goyal, and removing two senior health department officials, giving in to the medics' earlier demands.

According to a statement issued following the conclusion of their general body meeting, which had started around 6.30 pm on Tuesday and went on till well past midnight, the protestors called the state's administrative measures "only partial victory" of their movement.

The doctors demanded the removal of state Health Secretary N S Nigam, saying they were assured by Banerjee of an action on it during the talks on Monday.

19:04   BJP MP booked for remark on Rahul Gandhi
A first information report (FIR) was registered against Bharatiya Janata Party's Rajya Sabha member Anil Bonde on the charge of intention to cause riots on Wednesday over his controversial remarks against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, police said.

Bonde has kicked up a row, saying Gandhi's tongue should be singed as his remarks on reservation were 'dangerous' and hurt the feelings of the 'bahujan' and majority communities.

The FIR against Bonde followed a sit-in protest by Congress leaders, including Amravati MP Balwant Wankhede, MLA Yashomati Thakur, former Minister Sunil Deshmukh and the party workers at the office of the city police commissioner.

A case was registered against Bonde at Rajapeth police station in Amravati under sections 192 (Wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riots), 351 (ii) (the act of intentionally causing another person to apprehend the use of criminal force) and 356 (Punishment for defamation) against MP Anil Bonde.

"The language of chopping off the tongue is not proper, but what Rahul ji said against reservation is dangerous," Bonde said on Tuesday while reacting to remarks made by a Shiv Sena MLA against Rahul Gandhi.

"Hence, if anyone speaks anything absurd in a foreign country, then rather than chopping off his tongue, it should be singed. It is necessary to certainly singe the tongues of such people - be it Rahul Gandhi, Dnyanesh Maharao or Shyam Manav and people who hurt the feelings of the 'bahujan' and majority," Bonde said.

Maharao, an author, is accused of making derogatory comments on Hindu deities recently, while Manav is an anti-superstition crusader.  -- PTI

18:04   Kerala drank liquor worth Rs 818 cr during 12-day Onam festival
As Onam celebrations spread across Kerala, the state government-run BEVCO has reported record-breaking liquor sales, underscoring the central role spirits play in marking one of the state's most beloved festivals.

During the festival, liquor sales reached an all-time high, highlighting the significance of alcohol in the state's celebrations.

Over the 12-day festival period, Rs 818.21 crore worth of liquor was sold, surpassing last year's figures of Rs 809.25 crore during the same period, according to officials on Wednesday.

Uthradam, the day before Thiruvonam, witnessed a flurry of activity at the Kerala State Beverages Corporation (KSBC) outlets, with a number of them posting remarkable figures.

A notable shift occurred as the Kerala State Beverages Corporation Ltd (BEVCO) outlet in Asramam, Kollam district, which achieved top sales of Rs 115.41 lakh, marking it as the highest-grossing outlet on Uthradam day.

The outlet in Asramam managed to outperform Chalakudy's outlet in Thrissur district, which has traditionally held the top spot for several years.

Close to it was the Karunagappally outlet, also in Kollam district, which recorded sales of Rs 115.03 lakh, securing second position.

Chalakudy, which had long reigned as the leader in sales, was pushed to the third position with Rs 104.48 lakh in sales on the same day.

"Everyone expected Chalakudy to become the leader in sales but surprisingly, Asramam outlet registered the highest sales," Harshita Attaluri, managing director of KSBC, told PTI.

Although sales during this year's Onam season were high, she said that sales on Uthradam day were lower this year compared to last year.

On Uthradam day in 2023, sales amounted to Rs 715.97 crore, but this year, they dropped to Rs 704.06 crore.

Additionally, two outlets crossed Rs 90 lakh in daily sales, while eight outlets had sales exceeding Rs 80 lakh on Uthradam day.

17:49   Israeli envoy condemns Iran's remark on India
Israel's Ambassador to India, Reuven Azar, on Wednesday strongly condemned Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's comments on the treatment of minorities in India, calling the remarks 'ridiculous' and hypocritical.

Azar pointed out that while Khamenei lectures other nations, Iran itself is accused of suppressing freedoms and violating human rights.

"It is really ridiculous that this radical leader is trying to lecture others while he is killing his own population oppressing freedoms like freedom of religion, freedom of speech, human rights that is completely outrageous and we hope Iranian people are going to be free one day from such oppression and tyranny coming from Khamenei," Azar told PTI.

The Iranian leader, addressing a gathering of clerics in Tehran on Monday, talked about what he described as 'suffering' of Muslims in Gaza, Myanmar and India.

'The enemies of Islam have always tried to make us indifferent with regard to our shared identity as an Islamic Ummah. We cannot consider ourselves to be Muslims if we are oblivious to the suffering that a Muslim is enduring in #Myanmar, #Gaza, #India, or any other place,' he posted on 'X' as part of series of posts on the event.

India on Monday strongly deplored the comments made by Iran's supreme leader on the condition of minorities in India, calling the remarks 'misinformed and unacceptable'.

Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) official spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the countries commenting on minorities in India should look at their 'own record' before making any observations about others.

Azar briefly touched on the incidents reported in Lebanon on the use of pager blasts all over the country, stating the Israeli government is committed to ensuring the safe return of citizens displaced by recent Hezbollah attacks.

"We are securing a diplomatic solution with the help of the US and other partners," he said.

He was speaking on the sidelines of the India Water Week where he noted that the collaboration between India and Israel has become increasingly critical, particularly as India continues to tackle water scarcity and boost agricultural productivity.

"The ties between India and Israel have been expanding, especially in the field of water," Azar told PTI, while highlighting Israel's role as a global leader in water innovation.

Israel offers a comprehensive 'bank of solutions' that has had significant impacts on food security and sustainability, according to Azar.

These solutions cover areas such as efficient irrigation systems, water recycling for agriculture and advanced water management networks. The ambassador also emphasised Israel's presence on the ground in India, with Israeli expertise helping to run 32 Centers of Excellence focused on water management. These centers, he noted, are playing a crucial role in India's agricultural and urban water sectors.

"We have companies that have started to produce on Indian soil, contributing to India's water management system," Azar said, adding the Israeli investments are reaching more Indian cities and agricultural regions.

Azar further stressed the water collaboration between the two nations is expected to persist and expand in line with India's infrastructure development goals.

"India is making amazing efforts to create more infrastructure to bring water solutions to the population," he stated, adding these solutions are essential to improving access to water for both urban and rural communities.  -- PTI

17:16   No final evidence to prove Tiruvalluvar's birthday: HC
Pointing out there was no clinching material to show the exact birth day of Tamil saint-poet Tiruvalluvar, the Madras high court on Wednesday dismissed a petition that sought to declare as null and void, the Tamil Nadu government celebrating the bard's birthday on the second day of Tamil month Thai (January).

Justice M Dhandapani dismissed the petition filed by Prof Dr Samy Thiyagarajan, president, Tiruvalluvar Thirunat Khazhagam, which also sought to affirm the Vaikasi (May) month Anusham Natchatram (star) as the saint-poet's birthday.

The judge said throughout the petition, there was not a single averment or any material evidencing the birth day of Tiruvalluvar. The only glimpse with regard to the birth day, even according to the petitioner, was premised on the formation of Thiruvalluvar Thirunal Kazhagam in the year 1935, which celebrated the poet's birthday on Anusham star in the Tamil month Vaikasi.

Further, the said occasion was graced by Maraimalai Adigal, the great Tamil scholar, the judge added.

The judge said from the materials, it was evident there was no clinching material to show the exact birth day of Tiruvalluvar. In the absence of any concrete proof, the court cannot give any affirmative direction to the authorities to fix the birth day as claimed by the petitioner, the judge added.

The court pointed out that the second day of the Tamil month of Thai, which has been earmarked as Tiruvalluvar day by the authorities, nowhere spells out that it was the birthday of the great saint.

Only to celebrate the greatness of Tirukkural, which was a cherished testament by all, irrespective of caste, creed or religion, the authorities have earmarked the second day of the Tamil month of Thai to be celebrated as a mark of respect for the great saint and Tamil poet.

There was no mention in the GO that it was the birthday of Tiruvalluvar and only to celebrate the same, the second day of the Tamil month of Thai was earmarked.

16:50   Mamata govt invites medics for 2nd round of talks
The West Bengal government on Wednesday invited the junior doctors agitating over the RG Kar incident for a meeting at the state secretariat at 6.30 pm, responding to their request for a fresh round of talks.

In his response, Chief Secretary Manoj Pant reiterated the state government's appeal to the protesting medics to join work in the wake of the emerging flood-like situation in parts of the state.

The scheduled meeting would be the second round of talks between the stirring medics and the state government in 48 hours, the first of which was held in the presence of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday.

'You are aware that many districts of South Bengal are facing a flood-like situation with vast areas inundated. In the light of the above situation, while we again appeal to you to join duties in larger public interest and provide services to common people, I along with the other members of the task force will meet your delegation of 30 members at Nabanna Sabhaghar today at 6.30 pm,' Pant's email, sent at 2.49 pm, stated.

Earlier, the junior doctors wrote to the chief secretary, seeking a discussion on certain key unresolved issues like security in hospitals as a pre-condition for lifting their ongoing sit-in outside the state health department headquarters.

The medics shot off an email at 11.19 am as follow-up to decisions taken in their general body meeting, which concluded early Wednesday morning.

16:19   Cheap stunt: TMC on one nation, one election
Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Derek O'Brien on Wednesday called 'one nation, one election' a "cheap stunt" of the BJP, and questioned why Maharashtra elections were not announced with Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir if the government wants simultaneous elections.

One nation, one election is just another cheap stunt by the anti-democratic BJP. Why were Maharashtra elections not announced along with elections in Haryana and Jammu & Kashmir?" O'Brien said.

"The Maharashtra government announced the Ladki Bahin scheme in the Budget this June. The first tranche reached the bank accounts of women in August and the second tranche will reach the beneficiaries in October," he said.

"You can't do three states in one go and you talk about one nation, one election," he said.

He also sought to know how many Constitution amendments and curtailments of terms of state Assemblies would be required for the implementation of simultaneous polls.

"And also tell us, how many constitution amendments, including curtailing or extending terms of state Assemblies, will be done! Classic Modi-Shah jumla, he said. The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved the proposal for 'one nation, one election' as recommended by the Kovind panel, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said.

16:02   Cabinet approves 1 nation, 1 poll
The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved the proposal for 'one nation, one Election' as recommended by the Kovind panel, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Wednesday.

The report of the high-level committee on 'one nation, one election' was placed before the Union Cabinet on Wednesday. The panel headed by former president Ram Nath Kovind had submitted the report in March ahead of the announcement of Lok Sabha elections.

Vaishnaw said the report was approved unanimously. Placing the report before the Cabinet was a part of the law ministry's 100-day agenda. The high-level committee had recommended simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and state Assemblies as the first step followed by synchronised local body polls within 100 days.

The panel had also proposed setting up of an 'Implementation Group' to look into the execution of the recommendations made by the committee. The panel also recommended the preparation of a common electoral roll and voter ID cards by the Election Commission of India (ECI) in consultation with state election authorities. At present, the ECI is responsible for the Lok Sabha and Assembly polls, while the local body polls for municipalities and panchayats are managed by state election commissions.

The panel recommended as many as 18 constitutional amendments, most of which will not need ratification by state Assemblies. However, these would require certain Constitution amendment Bills that would need to be passed by Parliament. Some proposed changes regarding the single electoral roll and single voter ID card would need ratification by at least half of the states.

Separately, the Law Commission is also likely to come up soon with its own report on simultaneous polls, of which Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been a strong votary. Sources said that the Law Commission is likely to recommend holding simultaneous polls for all three tiers of the government -- the Lok Sabha, state Assemblies and local bodies like municipalities and panchayats -- starting with 2029 and a provision for unity government in cases like hung house. 16:01   Venus Orbiter Mission okayed
The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved the development of Venus Orbiter Mission for exploring and studying the planet.

The 'Venus Orbiter Mission' to be helmed by the Department of Space will involve placing a scientific spacecraft in the orbit of Venus for better understanding of its surface and subsurface, atmospheric processes and influence of the Sun on the Venusian atmosphere.

The study of the underlying causes of the transformation of Venus, which is believed to be once habitable and quite similar to Earth, would be an invaluable aid in understanding the evolution of the sister planets, both Venus and Earth, it said.

Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena has in a communication to President Droupadi Murmu proposed September 21 as the date for the swearing-in of Chief Minister-designate Atishi, sources said on Wednesday.

Kejriwal tendered his resignation to the LG on Tuesday and Atishi staked claim to form a new government in the national capital. PTI

15:14   AAP to begin 'Kejriwal honesty referendums' soon
AAP Rajya Sabha MP Sandeep Pathak on Wednesday said the party will be holding rallies in Delhi where outgoing Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal will interact with people to know about their decision on his honesty.

Talking to PTI-Videos, Pathak, who is also the party's national general secretary (organisation), said Kejriwal did not resign while in jail to save "democracy and the Constitution".

"The question arises -- why did he resign now? Whenever you will try to suppress him, he won't bow down and stand like a mountain. He resigned now because of his ideals. The BJP is toppling governments everywhere but when their chariot reached Delhi to do the same, Kejriwal diffused their plan by not resigning when he was in jail," he stressed.

Asserting that Kejriwal resigned for the sake of principles, Pathak said there was no need for him to step down since he had got bail and the government would have resumed functioning again. Outlining his party's plan in the lead up to the Delhi Assembly elections, he said they are planning rallies in Delhi.

"They will be announced today or tomorrow. The idea is that Arvind Kejriwal will go to the public and will ask them directly that if they feel he is honest they should vote for him and make him the chief minister again. If they feel that he is dishonest, they should not vote for him. People will decide," he said.

Kejriwal has handed over the mantle to Atishi Marlena, who will be the chief minister till Delhi goes to polls early next year. Explaining how Atishi was chosen for the top post, the senior AAP leader said she was handling several departments and has experience.

"All MLAs of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) are capable of becoming the CM. Atishi had been handling several departments already. She has the experience of running several departments, so it was obvious. Arvind Kejriwal proposed her name, and in our party, the word of our leader is final, and everyone is emotionally connected," Pathak said. "Arvind Kejriwal resigned; it was sad day for us. We agreed with his decision with a heavy heart, but someone had to be made the interim chief minister... hence she was chosen," he added.

The AAP is also in the fray in the October 5 Haryana Assembly polls. After their talks over alliance with the Congress did not materialise, the party decided to go solo in the polls.

"I can say two things with full confidence. The BJP has already packed its bags and they will face a big defeat. People of Haryana want change. They have seen all the parties and gave opportunities to all of them," Pathak said. "They have seen Arvind Kejriwal's politics, governance. We have a strong organisation in the state, something amazing is going to happen," he added. PTI

15:07   Flood-like situation in West Bengal man-made: Mamata
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday said that the flood-like situation in some parts of the state was "man-made" due to unbridled release of water by DVC from its dams in Maithon and Panchet.

Banerjee, who is visiting the affected areas in Hooghly district, told reporters that DVC has released 3.5 lakh cusecs of water which has led to this situation.

"This kind of water discharge had never happened before. DVC has released 3.5 lakh cusecs of water. I have talked with the DVC officials and the Jharkhand chief minister. But of no avail," she said.

The Centre does not dredge the DVC dams. Had these dams been dredged, another additional two lakh cusecs of water could have been stored, she said.

This action of releasing water is "pre-meditated and done to put West Bengal into trouble", she said. Several parts of the state in Hooghly and Paschim Medinipur districts have been inundated and the chief minister is visiting these areas. PTI

14:12   Kejriwal will vacate house, forego security: AAP
AAP MP Sanjay Singh on Wednesday confirmed that former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal will move out of his house and leave all the facilities provided to him.

Following Kejriwal's recent resignation, Singh highlighted the sacrifices made by the Chief Minister, noting that he plans to forgo the facilities typically afforded to his position.

"I have full faith that the people of Delhi will give Arvind Kejriwal a certificate of honesty with a huge majority. He has served the people of Delhi with complete honesty and sincerity. The Chief Minister gets many facilities. Arvind Kejriwal has also got those facilities. Yesterday when he resigned, the first thing he said was he would leave all these facilities. He said he will vacate his house within 1 week," Singh said while addressing a press conference on Wednesday.

Singh also raised concerns about Kejriwal's safety, citing multiple attacks against him.

"There is also a question about his security. He was attacked not once but many times, we told him and tried to explain that his security is in danger. People of the Bharatiya Janata Party have attacked him," Singh said.

13:56   Now, BJP MP says Rahul's tongue should be 'singed'
BJP's Rajya Sabha member Anil Bonde has said Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's tongue should be singed as what he said about reservation was "dangerous".

His remark made on Tuesday invited criticism from the opposition parties. It comes in the wake of Shiv Sena's Buldhana MLA Sanjay Gaikwad kicking up a row by announcing a Rs 11 lakh reward to anyone chopping off Gandhi's tongue for his remarks on scrapping the reservation system.

During his recent visit to the USA, Gandhi told students at the Georgetown University that the Congress would think of scrapping reservation when "India is a fair place", which he said is not the case right now.

Reacting to Gaikwad's statement of chopping off Gandhi's tongue, BJP leader Bonde said at Amravati in Maharashtra on Tuesday, "The language of chopping off tongue is not proper, but what Rahul ji said against reservation is dangerous."

"Hence, if anyone speaks anything absurd in a foreign country, then rather than chopping off his tongue, it should be singed. It is necessary to certainly singe the tongues of such people -- be it Rahul Gandhi, Dnyanesh Maharao or Shyam Manav and people who hurt the feelings of the 'bahujan' and majority," he said.

Maharao, an author, is accused of making derogatory comments on Hindu deities recently, while Manav is an anti-superstition crusader. A video of Bonde's remarks went viral on social media, inviting criticism from the opposition parties.

The MP also did not find support from his own party - BJP. Maharashtra BJP chief Chandrashekhar Bawankule said he does not support the statements made by Bonde and Gaikwad against Rahul Gandhi, but said the Congress leader should also refrain from giving "anti-India statements" and asked him to clarify his stand on the issue of reservation.

Speaking about these remarks, he said, "I do not support the statements made by Shiv Sena MLA Sanjay Gaikwad and BJP's Rajya Sabha member Anil Bonde. They should refrain from making such statements again." Shiv Sena (UBT) spokesperson Sanjay Raut condemned the remarks made by BJP-Shiv Sena lawmakers against Gandhi.

He alleged that there was a conspiracy against Gandhi and threat to his life. He also questioned the "silence" of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah over the comments made by Bonde and Gaikwad.

13:15   Raut: Why is PM silent on death threat to Rahul?
Shiv Sena (UBT) spokesperson Sanjay Raut on Wednesday alleged conspiracy against Rahul Gandhi and threat to his life, as he condemned the remarks made by BJP-Shiv Sena lawmakers against the Congress leader.

Talking to reporters, he also questioned the "silence" of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah after the remarks made by the leaders of ruling parties against Gandhi.

"People from Delhi, Lucknow and Maharashtra are speaking the same language that he (Gandhi) will meet the same fate as that of his grandmother (Indira Gandhi) as well as his father (Rajiv Gandhi). The Home Minister and Prime Minister are not taking action means they are with the people who make such remarks," Raut said.

"We condemn this (the remarks on Gandhi) and also the silence of these two leaders (PM and HM). He is a Leader of Opposition, and has a Cabinet rank. When your party people talk of assaulting him and you (PM and HM) remain quiet. This cannot be tolerated," the Sena (UBT) Rajya Sabha member said.

"There is a conspiracy against Rahul Gandhi and there is threat to his life. Some people are thinking of attacking him," he added.

BJP's Rajya Sabha member Anil Bonde has said Gandhi's tongue should be singed as what he said about reservation was "dangerous".

12:56   Vote for INDIA, vote for your rights: Rahul to J-K
Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday urged people in Jammu and Kashmir to vote for the INDIA bloc, saying every such vote will ensure the return of their rights and bring employment. Voting was underway on Wednesday for the assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir for the first time since the abrogation of Article 370. Twenty-four constituencies spread over seven districts of the Union territory are voting in the first phase.

"My brothers and sisters of Jammu and Kashmir, today the first phase of voting is being held. For the first time in the history of the country, a state's statehood has been taken away and it has been made a union territory - this is a violation of all your constitutional rights, an insult to Jammu and Kashmir," Gandhi said in a post in X.

"Your every vote for INDIA will ensure return of your rights, will bring employment, will make women strong, will bring you out of the 'era of injustice'...will make Jammu and Kashmir prosperous again," he said.

"Today, come out of your homes in the largest of numbers possible and exercise your democratic right - vote for INDIA," Gandhi added.

In a post in Hindi, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said, "My brothers and sisters of Jammu and Kashmir, in the last 10 years, things have only been taken away from you. Statehood was taken away, the right to vote and elect a government was taken away, the identity and self-respect of Jammu and Kashmir was taken away."

"Today is the time to change that. Your every vote will strengthen Jammu and Kashmir and your rights. Use your right to vote in maximum numbers and make INDIA win with a huge majority," she said. This is the maiden assembly election in Jammu and Kashmir as a Union territory. It is also the first poll to elect an assembly in the last 10 years.

12:29   Chandigarh court issues notice to Kangana over movie 'Emergency'
A court in Chandigarh has issued notices to BJP MP and actress Kangana Ranaut and others on a complaint accusing them of maligning the image of Sikhs in her upcoming movie 'Emergency'.

The notices were issued by the Chandigarh district court on Tuesday on a plea filed by advocate Ravinder Singh Bassi, who is also the president of the NGO Lawyers for Humanity.

The respondents have been asked to file their replies by December 5. Bassi in his petition alleged that Ranaut and other respondents have in the movie 'Emergency' tried to "malign the image of Sikhs" and particularly "targeted" the former Jathedar of the Akal Takth by portraying him as a "terrorist".

"The accused without studying the proper historical facts and figures had portrayed Sikhs in bad shape and also made wrong and false allegations against the supreme temporal seat of the Sikh community as in the trailer of the movie it was shown that the sitting Jathedar of Sri Akal Takth Sahib was demanding separate state which is totally false and it was shown just to malign the image of Sikhs and the Akal Takth Jathedars," Bassi alleged in the plea.

"That by this act and conduct of the accused, they hurt the sentiments and feelings of the Sikh community in general and the deponent," the petition filed by Bassi, the former president of the District Bar Association, Chandigarh, said. -- PTI

The doctors highlighted issues of safety and security inside state-run hospital premises and details of the promised special task force headed by the chief secretary as agenda for the proposed meeting.

"In reference to our last meeting with the CM, we would like to reiterate there were certain key points regarding our five-point demand which were unresolved. 12:20   NDA leaders' death threats to Rahul: Cong files FIR
The Congress on Wednesday filed a police complaint over the recent statements of leaders belonging to the ruling NDA targeting Rahul Gandhi. The party alleged that the statements were aimed at jeopardising the safety and security of the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and to disturb peace throughout the country, especially in view of the polls in Jammu and Kashmir, and Haryana.

In the complaint submitted to the SHO of the Tughlaq Road police station by AICC treasurer and general secretary Ajay Maken, the Congress cited the recent remarks by BJP leaders Tarvinder Singh Marwah, Ravneet Singh Bittu and Raghuraj Singh, as well as that of Shiv Sena MLA Sanjay Gaikwad.

Maken sought registration of FIRs against the leaders. Speaking with the media after filing the complaint, Maken said, "We all know that late Indira Gandhi ji and late Rajiv ji have sacrificed their lives for the country. Even after that, they are giving such threats. Politics in India cannot stoop to a lower level than this, he said. Not just one BJP leader, but many leaders have said such things, but BJP did not take any action," he said.

"Rahul Gandhi talks about SC, ST, OBC, tribal and minority people. That is why BJP people do not like his words. This is the reason why they are threatening him, he said. But let me tell you -- This is the Congress party and we are not going to be scared or cowed down," Maken said.

In the police complaint, Maken said, "On September 11, Marwah in a BJP event openly issued assassination threat against Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, wherein he said that 'Rahul Gandhi baaz aaja, nahi toh aane wale time mein tera bhi wohi haal hoga jo teri dadi ka haal hua (you better behave, or you will meet the same fate as your grandmother)'".

It also cited Sena MLA Gaikwad's announcement of a bounty of Rs 11 lakh for anyone who will cut the tongue of the Leader of Opposition. The complaint cited Minister of State for Railways Ravneet Bittu's remarks, calling the Leader of Opposition the "number one terrorist of the country".

"Bittu deliberately made the statement to provoke public hatred and outrage against Mr Gandhi, with the aim to incite violence and breach of peace. The said statement was widely publicised on TV channels and social media," the complaint said.

11:13   Maliwal: Atishi's parents had ties with Geelani
AAP Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal on Wednesday alleged that Delhi Chief Minister-designate Atishi's parents had close ties with SAR Geelani who was an accused in the 2001 Parliament attack case but later acquitted by the Supreme Court.

"Atishi Marlena's parents had close ties with SAR Geelani. Gilani was accused of having a hand in the attack on Parliament. In 2016, he organised a programme in the memory of Afzal Guru at the Press Club of Delhi," Maliwal said in a post on X.

"Atishi Marlena's parents were with Gilani on stage in that programme. Slogans were raised in this programme - "If one Afzal dies, lakhs will be born.", "Kashmir demands freedom". Atishi Marlena's parents have written an article titled "Arrest and torture of Syed Geelani". God protect Delhi!" she added.

On Tuesday, after Atishi was elected as leader of the AAP Legislature Party, Maliwal alleged that Atishi's parents had written mercy petitions to cancel the death sentence of 2001 Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru. "This is an extremely unfortunate day for Delhi. A woman like Atishi is going to become the CM of Delhi, whose own family fought a long battle to save terrorist Afzal Guru from the death penalty," Maliwal said.

"Her parents wrote mercy petitions to the President several times, that he is innocent, that he should not be hanged, that he is a victim of political conspiracy. How wrong is this? Today, Atishi will become the CM but we all know that she will be only a "dummy CM". Still, this is a major issue because she will be the CM and this matter is directly linked to the security of the country as well as Delhi. God save the people of Delhi from such a CM."

AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday met Lt Governor VK Saxena and tendered his resignation as the Chief Minister of Delhi. Senior AAP leader and minister Atishi, who was chosen by the party legislators to be the next Chief Minister, met LG Saxena to stake claim to the post.

Speaking to the media after meeting the Lt Governor, Atishi said, "This is the first time in the democratic history of the world that a Chief Minister has decided that the decision of the Supreme Court is not enough for him. Until the court of the people gives its verdict, he will not sit on the Chief Minister's chair."

10:53   Over 37,000 idols immersed in Mumbai as Ganesh festival ends
More than 37,000 idols of Lord Ganesh and Goddess Gauri were immersed in water bodies across Mumbai by Wednesday morning as devotees bade farewell to their favourite elephant-headed deity with the conclusion of the festival, officials said.

The immersion processions, which began on Tuesday morning on the last day of the Ganesh festival, continued smoothly throughout the night, with devotees thronging the city's beaches, lakes and artificial ponds for immersion of the idols.

The idol of Lalbaugcha Raja Ganesh - which like every year drew lakhs of devotees - was immersed into the Arabian Sea off the Girgaon beach in south Mumbai around 10.30 am. Thousands of devotees made a beeline to catch the last glimpse of the deity.

Chinchpoklicha Chintamani, another famous Ganesh mandal from Lalbaug and idols of few other groups were also brought to the beach for immersion. Immersion took place at artificial ponds as well as Girgaon, Dadar, Juhu, Marve and Aksa beaches, among other spots in the megapolis.

"By 6 am on Wednesday, a total of 37,064 idols of Lord Ganesh and Gauri were immersed in various water bodies across Mumbai. These include 5,762 idols of 'sarvajanik' (community groups). Of the total, 11,713 idols were immersed in the artificial ponds set up across the city," a civic official said.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had made elaborate arrangements for the immersion by deploying thousands of personnel, lifeguards and emergency services to ensure that the processions pass off smoothly and safely. The festival began on September 7 and culminated on September 17.

10:51   Kashmir hasn't forgotten August 5, 2019: Omar
National Conference (NC) vice president Omar Abdullah on Wednesday expressed hope that voters in Jammu and Kashmir would avoid "fragmentation of their votes", warning that many independent candidates in the Valley were contesting with the aim to divide the ballot.

"People will have to keep it (a huge number of independent candidates contesting) in mind, because most of these candidates are in Kashmir. It seems it is an attempt to fragment votes and divide people. "I hope the voters will remain cautious of these and avoid fragmentation of their votes in this election," Abdullah told PTI Videos .

The NC leader also said he is hopeful that people will vote in favour of the NC-Congress pre-poll alliance.

"We are hoping that vote will be in favour of the candidates of NC-Congress alliance in which a CPI(M) member is also a part of, but it is the voters who will decide. We have tried to take our agenda for J-K for the next five years to the voters, let us see what happens," he said.

The former chief minister of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir said the assembly elections, which are being held here after 10 years, are very important.

"The more we talk about the importance of these polls, the less it will be. They are happening after 10 years and a lot has changed in these 10 years. Jammu and Kashmir was divided into two, Ladakh was separated from us, we were granted a UT status even as we fail to understand how it benefitted us.

"We have not forgotten what happened with Jammu and Kashmir on August 5, 2019, so it is a very important election in all respects," he said.

When asked if Prime Minister Narendra Modi's rally here on Thursday would have any impact on the polls, Abdullah said there would not be any such impact in the Kashmir valley.

"Nothing in Kashmir. It will be a huge thing if the BJP can give a tough fight on a single seat in Kashmir. The election will be incomplete without the PM's visit to Kashmir, but it will not make a difference on the seats here," he said.

To a question about Union Home Minister Amit Shah's remarks that even as NC and PDP have promised restoration of Article 370 in their manifestos, the BJP government at the Centre will not allow that, the NC vice president said many issues do not need the government's approval.

10:16   'Peace cannot be seasonal'
Communist Party of India-Marxist leader Mohammed Yousuf Tarigami, 77, has been continuously winning assembly elections from 1996 onwards from Kulgam, which is a record of sorts in Kashmir.

This election, his challenger has come from the most unexpected quarter -- the Jamaat-E-Islami, a banned outfit in Jammu and Kashmir.

For the last 30 years, the JeI did not believe in Indian democracy and even if it did, it was a silent supporter of the Peoples Democratic Party in south Kashmir.

This time, the Jamaat has backed an Independent candidate, Sayar Ahmed Reshi, a teacher turned politician, for the elections on September 18.

Engineer Rashid, the Lok Sabha MP from Baramulla who is out on interim bail and drawing large crowds on the campaign trail, has decided to do an alliance with the Jamat-E-Islami.

The people of Kulgam say it is a battle of Red versus Green -- red for Tarigami's CPI-M and green for the Jamaat supported Independent nominee.

"Jamaat has been saying for the last 30 years that the Indian Constitution is unacceptable. They said that anyone who takes oath on the Indian Constitution is a criminal... If you go through the pages of history you will find out what Jamaat-e-Islami said yesterday and what they are saying today. There is a shift in their stance and this shift of stance they have to explain to the people of Kashmir," Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami tells Syed Firdaus Ashraf/Rediff.com.

09:56   Will Ajit Pawar be Maha CM? He says...
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar expressed disappointment on Tuesday over the lack of recognition for his development efforts in Baramati.

Despite securing significant funds for the constituency, Pawar feels his contributions have not been fully appreciated by the people.

He highlighted the importance of acknowledging achievements, noting that even completed work can be overlooked if not properly highlighted.

Pawar reflected on his loss in the Lok Sabha elections, accepting responsibility but pointing to challenges such as the Covid pandemic and limited time out of power, which he said reduced his productive years to three.

Despite the substantial funds Baramati received, Pawar believes his efforts have been taken for granted.

"The people assume I gave those funds simply because I could," Pawar said during an event in Pune.

The Deputy CM added, "When a capable person feels their efforts go unrecognised, it becomes discouraging. In a democracy, however, it's the people's right to make their choice."

Pawar also addressed discussions on potential constitutional changes, including curbing reservations and implementing a common civil code. He mentioned that some individuals who raised concerns about reservations have remained silent following recent statements, indirectly referencing Rahul Gandhi's comments on the quota system.

Regarding the role of Chief Minister, Pawar acknowledged his party workers' desire for him to assume the position. Asked about his personal aspirations, he said, "Every supporter wishes to see their leader in that role." He added, "I am among those leaders too."

However, Pawar highlighted that becoming Chief Minister requires a majority of 145 seats, which depends on the voters' choice. "It's up to the people to decide who they will support and elevate to that position," he said.

09:36   Trump assassination bid: Secret Service under watch
CNN.com: Days following an apparent assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, both presidential candidates pressed on with campaign efforts in must-win states.

Vice President Kamala Harris spoke at a panel in Philadelphia, while Trump hosted a town hall in Flint, Michigan, this evening.

But there are concerns about the Secret Service. Acting Secret Service Director Ronald Rowe told Trump that substantial security enhancements are needed for him to continue golfing safely at his private clubs, sources told CNN.

Trump has praised the agency's response to Sunday's incident amid renewed scrutiny. For the second time in more than two months, the Secret Service that protects the highest echelon of American leaders is under scrutiny - this time after a gunman hid in the shrubs along the fence of former President Donald Trump's golf course for 12 hours.

The man didn't get a shot off, but critics question how he could be just several hundred yards away from Trump - especially after the Republican presidential candidate's security was beefed up after his near-death experience in July.

Suspected militants launched a fresh attack at Mongbung Meitei village in Manipur's Jiribam district, police said on Wednesday. Militants fired several rounds from sophisticated weapons around 7 pm on Tuesday evening prompting retaliation from village volunteers in the area, the police said. However, no one was injured in the exchange of fire, they said.

Security forces were rushed to the spot to bring the situation under control and firing stopped around 8 pm, an officer said. Authorities are monitoring the situation and have urged local villagers to cooperate with security forces while conducting operations, another officer said.

09:04   Remember travesty of J-K downgrade to UT: Kharge
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Wednesday urged voters in Jammu and Kashmir to remember who is responsible for the "travesty" of downgrading a state to a Union Territory when they cast their vote.

Kharge asserted that the people of Jammu and Kashmir are eager to safeguard their rights and embark on a new era of true development and full statehood. Voting began for the assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday, the first time since the abrogation of Article 370, as 24 constituencies spread over seven districts of the Union Territory went to polls in Phase 1 amid tight security arrangements.

In a post on X, Kharge said, "As the first phase of voting in 24 Assembly constituencies commences, we urge everyone to exercise their democratic right and vote in large numbers."

Every single vote holds the power to shape the future and bring about an era of peace, stability, justice, progress, and economic empowerment, the Congress president said.

"We appeal to all, especially first-time voters, to participate in this crucial election and be the catalysts for change," he said.

"For the first time ever, a state was downgraded to a Union Territory, when you cast your vote, do remember who is responsible for this travesty," Kharge said.

"Let us unite and shape a brighter future for Jammu and Kashmir, where the voices of all citizens are heard," he added.

This is the maiden assembly election in Jammu and Kashmir as a Union Territory. It is also the first poll to elect an assembly in the last 10 years. The Centre abrogated Article 370, which gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir, and bifurcated the erstwhile state into two Union Territories -- Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh -- on August 5, 2019. In the first phase of the three-phase polls, seven districts of Jammu and Kashmir, located on either side of the Pir Panjal mountain range, are voting to choose their representatives.

More than 23 lakh voters will decide the fate of 219 candidates, including 90 Independents, who are running for 24 assembly segments -- eight in three districts of the Jammu region and 16 in four districts of the Kashmir valley. The other two phases are scheduled to be held on September 25 and October 1, while the votes will be counted on October 8. PTI

08:42   It's in hands of...: Ajit Pawar on CM ambitions
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar on Tuesday rued that despite his efforts to bring substantial funds and development to Baramati constituency, his contributions have not been adequately recognised by the local populace.

Speaking at an event in Pune, the Baramati MLA said, I have been involved in development work for many years, but if you do not remind people of these efforts, they will not value them."

Referring to his experience during the Lok Sabha elections, Pawar noted that even significant achievements may go unnoticed if not frequently highlighted.

"One has to keep reminding people that you have done this, you have done that. If you do the work but do not mention it, people will not value it," said Pawar.

Pawar acknowledged that his political career faced challenges, including a year lost to the COVID-19 pandemic and another year spent out of power, leaving him with only three active years.

Despite this, he claimed that Baramati received substantial funding, which, he argued, was not fully utilised or appreciated.

"Despite the funds allocated, people tend to believe funds were given merely because they were in my hands. Such situations can be disheartening for those who strive hard but feel their efforts go unrecognised," he added.

However, in a democracy, people have the right to decide, he added.
Notably, Pawar had last month hinted that he was not keen to contest the Assembly polls from the Baramati constituency, apparently stung by his wife Sunetra Pawar's defeat at the hands of her sister-in-law Supriya Sule in Lok Sabha elections on the home turf.

Pawar said a fake narrative regarding the potential changes to the Constitution and reservations and implementation of the Uniform Civil Code was spread during general elections.

"But those individuals who spread this narrative are now mum on remarks regarding reservations," the NCP leader said in a veiled reference to Rahul Gandhi's remarks on "ending reservations".

Meanwhile, Pawar quipped that he is also on the list of leaders desiring CM's position.

"Politicians desire (for that position). However, everyone's wish cannot be fulfilled as one needs a magic figure of 145 to become the CM and it's in the hands of voters", he added. -- PTI

American lawmakers and community leaders Tuesday condemned vandalism of a Hindu temple in New York and called for bringing the guilty to the book.

"I strongly condemn this act of desecration of a Hindu temple in Melville, NY. Freedom of worship is a bedrock of our democracy. There is no place for acts of intimidation, harassment or violence. We need accountability and to make sure this does not happen again," Indian American Congressman Ro Khanna said.

The BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Melville, New York was defaced with hateful messages on Sunday night.

Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi termed the act despicable, even as he called for unity among Americans.

"I am appalled by the despicable acts of vandalism targeting the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Melville. As our country faces a surge in political violence and acts of bigotry, we must stand together as Americans against all forms of hate," he said.

06:57   RG Kar: Agitating doctors to continue 'cease work'
Junior doctors agitating over RG Kar murder early Wednesday said they will continue their sit-in and not join duty, despite the state appointing Manoj Kumar Verma as the new Kolkata Police chief, replacing Vineet Goyal, and removing two senior health department officials, giving in to the medics' earlier demands.

According to a statement issued following the conclusion of their general body meeting, which had started around 6.30 pm and went on till well past midnight, the protestors called the state's administrative measures "only partial victory" of their movement.

The doctors demanded the removal of the state health secretary NS Nigam, saying they were assured by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee during the Monday of an action on it.

The doctors said they will send an email to Chief Secretary Manoj Pant after daybreak seeking an appointment with the CM for another meeting later in the day.

They also demanded discussions on safety and security of doctors inside hospital premises and including a thorough rundown on how the government wants to spend the Rs 100 crore it has allocated for tightening doctors' safety in state-run hospitals.

"No effective security measures can be implemented in hospitals without a thorough overhaul of public healthcare delivery mechanism including streamlining of the referral system, the appointment of health workers and professional patient counsellors, plugging of admission corruption and ensuring availability of life-saving drugs," the statement read.

The doctors demanded immediate notification of the chief secretary-headed task force in medical colleges which was promised at the meeting at Banerjee's residence on Monday.

They also demanded the student body elections be held and adequate representation of junior doctors in the highest policy-making bodies of those institutions be ensured. -- PTI

01:11   TISS revokes ban on students' Union
The Tata Institute of Social Sciences has revoked the ban on Progressive Students Forum, the left-leaning student body claimed on Tuesday.

In a statement, the PSF said with the lifting of the ban, the united struggle of the students ensured that such actions could not survive even for a single month.

The ban on the student body was imposed last month.

In a rare move, the right-wing Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, the student wing of the RSS, also came out in support of the PSF.

The TISS had said the PSF has been engaging in activities that obstruct the institute's function and defame it.

Any attempt by the PSF to organise or participate in unauthorised events will be met with "immediate intervention and consequences".

"The ban of PSF goes directly against UGC guidelines for student entitlement which not only allows but encourages students to form organisations and associations," the PSF said on Tuesday. -- PTI

00:42   If Cong dog tries to enter my programme...: Sena MLA
In yet another provocative statement, Shiv Sena MLA Sanjay Gaikwad has threatened to `bury any Congress dog' coming to his programme.

On Monday, the Buldhana legislator's announcement of a `reward' for anyone chopping off Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's tongue had set off a huge political row.

Talking to reporters on the same day, Gaikwad is heard saying in a video that Chief Minister Eknath Shinde -- who heads the Shiv Sena -- will attend a programme about the government's flagship `Mukhyamantri Ladki Bahin Yojana' for women in his district.

"If any Congress dog tries to enter my programme, I will bury them then and there," Gaikwad is heard saying.

The MLA had earlier announced a Rs 11 lakh reward to anyone who `chops off' Rahul Gandhi's tongue for his remarks on scrapping the reservation system.

"I have made the statement. If I have not apologised, why should the CM do so?....Of 140 crore people in the country, 50 per cent of the population gets reservation. And I am firm on the statement I made about the person who spoke about removing reservation," Gaikwad said, when asked about the controversy.

The police on Monday night registered a case against him over the remark about the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha. -- PTI
