21:26   Bangladesh reverses hilsa export ban, approves 3K tonne shipment to India
Bangladesh's interim government on Saturday said it would export 3,000 tonnes of hilsa fish to India, coinciding with the upcoming Durga Puja, revising its earlier decision.

Durga puja will be celebrated from October 9 to 13.

The development comes days after the interim government, led by Professor Muhammad Yunus, earlier this month imposed a ban on hilsa export to India to meet domestic demand, discontinuing a long-standing tradition of Bangladesh as a "goodwill gesture" to its neighbour.

"Against the backdrop of appeals by the exporters, approval has been given to export 3,000 tonnes of hilsa fish (to India), fulfilling the specific conditions on the occasion of the upcoming Durga Puja," the commerce ministry said in a statement.

The ministry asked applicants to contact its relevant wing to obtain export permission.

The previous Awami League government led by deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina had allowed hilsa exports to India between September and October every year as a goodwill gesture, a tradition that had been nurtured for years.

Officials said Bangladesh in 2023 had allowed 79 companies to export a total of 4,000 tonnes to India, coinciding with the Durga Puja, the largest religious festival of Hindu Bengalis. -- PTI

19:48   India should back principles of sovereignty: US NSA on Ukraine conflict
The US on Saturday said that Russia's war against Ukraine flouted all international norms and urged countries like India to support the principles of principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity.

On being asked about US President Biden's meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and what he could say about what he wants India to do vis a vis China and Russia and the ongoing war in Ukraine, US national security advisor Jake Sullivan says, "I won't go too deep into the details of what he will say on those issues which are obviously sensitive and will obviously be critical priorities in the bilateral meeting. I will just say that the United States has been clear about our view that Russia's brutal war of aggression against Ukraine flouted every norm and principle of international law, that countries like India, should step up and support the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity, and that every country everywhere should refrain from supplying inputs to Russia's war machine for it to be able to continue to prosecute this brutal war. So they will talk about that."

"The President will also hear from Prime Minister Modi about his trip to Ukraine, which was an important and indeed historic trip, and it will be the opportunity for the two of them to talk about their respective views on the way forward. And then with respect to China, you know, they will talk about how they see China's actions in the region where China is headed. And that's not just true in the security domain, but in the economic and technology domain as well. And work to try to coordinate approaches to the extent that makes sense for both..." -- ANI

A few private vehicles, were, however, seen plying the roads.

Essential services were exempted from the purview of the bandh. Normal life in the hill districts, was, however, not affected, an official told PTI.

The bandh call was given by NRFM in protest against the signing of the merger agreement between the then Manipur ruler Maharaja Bodhchandra and the Government of India on this day in 1949.

After the signing of the agreement, the princely state of Manipur officially became a part of the Union of India on October 15, 1949. -- PTI

10:27   Bengal junior docs resume duties partially
Junior doctors on Saturday morning rejoined their duties partially at various government-run hospitals in West Bengal after a hiatus of 42 days.

They were on 'cease work' agitation in protest against the rape and murder of an on-duty woman doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

The junior doctors rejoined their duties in essential and emergency services at all state-run hospitals but not in the outpatient department (OPD).

"We have started rejoining duties today. Our colleagues have started returning to their respective departments since this morning only in essential and emergency services, but not at the OPDs. Please do not forget that this is only a partial resumption of duties," Aniket Mahato, one of the agitating doctors, told PTI.

He said his other colleagues have already left for flood-hit districts of the state where they would start 'Abhaya clinics' (medical camps), to demonstrate their commitment to public health even amid ongoing protests.

The agitating doctors said that they would wait for another seven days for the administration to fulfill their demands for justice for the deceased doctor and the removal of state health secretary or else they would start another round of 'cease work'.

The doctors have been protesting since August 9 when the body of a woman medic was found at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, demanding justice for the deceased doctor as well as removing key officials from their posts alleging their involvement in the case.

The CBI, which is investigating the case, has arrested several people, including former principal of the RG Kar Hospital, in connection with its investigation into the matter.   -- PTI

10:04   Sanctity of Tirupati laddu now restored: TTD
Amid concerns among devotees on the quality of ghee used in the famous Tirupati 'laddu prasadam', the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) has said sanctity of the sacred sweetmeat has been restored.

In a social media post on Friday night, the TTD, which manages the Sri Venkateswara Swamy temple, on the hills of Tirumala said the divinity and purity of Srivari Laddu is unblemished now.

'The divinity and purity of Srivari laddu is unblemished now. TTD is committed to protecting the holiness of Laddu Prasadam to the satisfaction of all the devotees,' the temple board said in the post.

The temple body managing the super-rich shrine on Friday revealed it has come across sub-standard ghee and presence of lard in samples tested for quality, echoing claims first made by Andhra Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu two days ago.

With the fingers of accusation being pointed at the previous YSRCP regime over the issue, former CM Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy described the matter as 'diversion politics', and slammed it as a 'concocted story'.

The Centre has sought a report on the matter from the Andhra Pradesh government and promised suitable action after examining it.

Union Food Minister Pralhad Joshi called for an investigation into the allegations.

Citing a lab report on Friday, the TTD stated that there was presence of 'lard' (pig fat) and other impurities in the ghee.

TTD Executive Officer J Shyamala Rao said lab tests have revealed the presence of animal fat and lard in chosen samples and the board was in the process of blacklisting the contractor who supplied 'adulterated' ghee.  -- PTI

09:08   LIC MF May Launch Rs 100 SIPs In October
Khushboo Tiwari/Business Standard

LIC Mutual Fund plans to launch smaller ticket-size systematic investment plans (SIPs) of Rs 100 by the first week of October, said R K Jha, its MD and CEO.

The decision comes at a time when Sebi has been advocating lower-size SIPs to allow more participation from investors.

In its initiative to make it more accessible, the market regulator has been working on measures to make Rs 250 SIP more cost-effective and viable for fund houses.

At present, there are a few fund houses that offer SIPs below Rs 500.

LIC MF plans to bring down the minimum daily SIP amount to Rs 100 from the current limit of Rs 300. For monthly SIPs, it will be brought down to Rs 200 from Rs 1,000.

"We will bring the addendum for lowering SIP amounts on October 7," said Jha.

Jha was speaking on the sidelines of the launch of its new fund offering (NFO) -- LIC MF Manufacturing Fund -- an open-ended equity scheme focusing on the manufacturing theme.

The fund house believes that push from the government and global shift in supply chain to China+1 are in favour of the sector for the long term.

The fund house is aiming to take its assets under management (AUM) to Rs 1 trillion by FY26 from the current Rs 35,000 crore (Rs 350 billion).

08:47   iPhone 16 sales up 15-20% over iPhone 15 on Day 1
Surajeet Das Gupta/Business Standard

The highly anticipated launch of Apple iPhone 16 series generated significant buzz in India on Friday, with serpentine queues at flagship stores and quick-service platforms offering deliveries for the first time.

According to Counterpoint Research, which undertook the initial sample survey across retailers, iPhone 16 series has witnessed up to a 15 to 20 per cent surge in sales on the inaugural day compared to its iPhone 15 counterpart.

Neil Shah, founder of Counterpoint Research in India, said that based on the initial feedback, the basic iPhone 16 model was the bestseller on Day 1, followed by Pro Max.

Shah points out that the agency has conducted a dipstick study on the first day to gauge consumer sentiment and traction.

Over the fortnight, it will be undertaking a more comprehensive study comprising a larger sample of over 200 retailers.

Big Basket, which promised quick delivery of iPhone 16 in 10 minutes, delivered 138 phones in the first hour.

The quick-service platform has been selling 3 to 4 phones every minute, according to Hari Menon, co- founder of Big Basket.

Blinkit, which has tied up with reseller Unicorn, made over 300 deliveries in four cities, including in Delhi-NCR, Bengaluru, Mumbai and Pune since 8 am when sales kicked off, Unicorn founder Albinder Dhindsa said.

In FY24, sales in India, primarily driven by iPhones, touched Rs 67,000 crore (Rs 670 billion), growing by 35 per cent year-on-year.

In FY 2019, domestic sales were only Rs 11,000 crore (Rs 110 billion), representing a sevenfold increase.

For the first time, Apple is assembling its top-end models, including the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, in India, simultaneously with production in China.
