18:33 Akhilesh pitches for ballot voting, says EVMs not trustworthy
Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav has called for elections to be conducted using ballot papers, citing a lack of trust in electronic voting machines (EVMs).
The former Uttar Pradesh chief minister said this at a press conference at the SP headquarters here on Sunday, alongside Rahul Kumar Kamboj, an Indian-origin member of Parliament in Germany.
"Even a country like Germany conducts elections using ballot papers. But in India, elections are conducted with EVMs to serve vested interests," Yadav said.
Emphasising the need for elections that inspire confidence, he said, "No one trusts EVMs.
Even the faces of those who win elections seem dejected as they too do not have faith in the system."
At the press conference, Kamboj highlighted the benefits of Germany's ballot-paper voting system.
"In Germany, voting is still conducted using ballot papers. It is an important system because any discrepancies can be addressed with a recount," he explained.
Reflecting on his visit to Lucknow and his longstanding relationship with Yadav, Kamboj said, "My efforts are focused on fostering a collaboration between Indian-origin individuals and Germany, so that the qualities of both countries can come together. We aim to facilitate cultural exchanges and I invite everyone to participate in the upcoming cultural festivals in Germany. Visa issues will no longer be a hurdle," he said.
Kamboj also spoke of building a bridge between opportunities in Europe and their implementation in India, specifically in Uttar Pradesh.
"If we can identify the opportunities available in Germany and Europe, and bring them to places like Lucknow, it will open new avenues. That is my mission," he added. -- PTI
Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu
18:12 Sidhu writes to Prez Murmu for Manmohan Singh memorial at Rajghat complex
Senior Punjab Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu on Sunday wrote to President Droupadi Murmu, urging her to direct the Centre ro raise a memorial for former prime minister Manmohan Singh at the Raj Ghat complex.
Sidhu's letter comes a day after the Congress accused the Centre of insulting Manmohan Singh, the country's first Sikh prime minister, by carrying out his last rites at the Nigambodh Ghat instead of a designated spot that could have become his memorial.
The Opposition party had written to the Centre for identifying a designated place for Singh's last rites.
The Centre responded by saying a decision to set up a memorial has already been taken and a trust would be formed to identify the location soon.
Manmohan Singh died on December 26. He was cremated at the Nigambodh Ghat on December 28.
BJP president JP Nadda has also responded to the Congress' accusations, saying the Centre has decided to allocate space for Manmohan Singh's memorial and informed his family about it.
He accused the grand old party of indulging in "cheap politics" over the former prime minister's cremation.
Sharing his letter on X, Sidhu posted, "This is not just about a memorial; it's about upholding historic norms and the dignity of our democracy. India must rise above petty parish pump politics."
In the letter to President Murmu, he has written, "I urge your esteemed office to intervene and direct the government to ensure that a memorial for Dr Manmohan Singh is established at the Raj Ghat complex, upholding the dignity of this tradition".
"I write to you with profound concern and deep conviction regarding the need to establish a memorial for Dr Manmohan Singh, the 13th Prime Minister of India, at the Raj Ghat complex, a site that symbolises the glorious tradition of commemorating the legacy of our nation's leaders." -- PTI

Tigress Zeenat, which had strayed from Odisha's Similipal Tiger Reserve to Bankura in West Bengal, was finally captured on Sunday afternoon after being sedated with tranquillisers, chief wildlife warden Debal Roy said.
The tigress had kept wildlife officials from both the states on edge for over a week after leaving STR.

The animal's vital parameters would be examined before deciding her temporary accommodation, he said.

Since Saturday night, the tigress had been in Gopalpur forest in Bankura district, where she was surrounded by double netting, he added.
"At 1.20 am on Sunday, the tigress was first tranquillised, but despite repeated doses, she could not be sedated," Roy said.
The operation was paused at 4:30 am due to the upper limit on tranquilliser doses.
After the tigress had rested and calmed down, the operation resumed, and she was successfully sedated in the afternoon, Roy said.

14:56 Malayalam film industry suffered at least Rs 650 cr loss in 2024
Though Mollywood has produced a few blockbusters that received a pan-Indian release and reaped huge profit in 2024, only 26 of the 204 films released in the year got a rewarding collection, as per the figures released by the Kerala Film Producers Association.
Of the 199 new films and five remastered versions of earlier productions released in theatres for which the industry spent around Rs 1,000 crore, only 26 films got a profit Rs 300-Rs 350 crore from theatres, KFPA secretary A Rakesh said.
The figures meant that the industry suffered a loss of Rs 650 crore to Rs 700 crore during the year, he said.
All the stakeholders, including actors, should keep strict financial discipline in the Malayalam filmdom to sustain cinema industry, Rakesh said.
Only 26 films released this year come under super hit, hit, and average hit categories.
These films made a profit of around Rs 300 to Rs 350 crore, while other films could not make any impact in the theatres.
He said more than 200 films were released in 2023 also, most of which received the same fate in theatres.
Asked about the turnover from OTT platforms he said not many films could make it to the OTT as most of them were bought based on theatre collection.
He said the association arrived at the figures based on the estimates given by producers, which will be approximately close to the actual costs involved in film-making.
The producers felt that the production cost of movies should be brought down and without financial prudence the industry couldn't sustain. -- PTI

14:31 ISRO to launch its SpaDeX mission tomorrow
The Indian Space Research Organisation is set to launch its year-end mission, "Space Docking Experiment" (SpaDeX), on Monday at 9:58 pm from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre SHAR in Sriharikota.
The mission will use PSLV-C60.
As per the ISRO, the primary objective of the SpaDeX mission is to develop and demonstrate the technology needed for rendezvous, docking, and undocking of two small spacecraft (SDX01, which is the Chaser, and SDX02, the Target, nominally) in a low-Earth circular orbit.
"In addition, SpaDeX, because of its small size and mass, is even more challenging due to the finer precision required for the rendezvous and docking maneuvers compared to docking two large spacecraft. This mission will be a forerunner for autonomous docking needed for future lunar missions like Chandrayaan-4 without the support of GNSS from Earth," ISRO said in a statement. -- ANI

11:08 Govt cancels auction of 11 critical mineral blocks
The government has cancelled the auction of 11 critical mineral blocks in the fourth round due to poor response.
While no bids were received for four blocks, the remaining seven mines got less than three technically qualified bidders, according to the annulment notice.
The four blocks which include tungsten and glauconite, are located in the states of Chhattisgarh and Arunachal Pradesh.
"Since there were nil bids received....the auction process for four mineral blocks stands annulled," the notice said.
Critical minerals, such as cobalt, copper, lithium, nickel and rare earths, play crucial roles in the production of clean energy technologies, ranging from wind turbines to electric vehicles.
"Since there were less than three technically qualified bidders...the auction process of these seven mineral blocks stands annulled," the notice said.
The government had earlier cancelled the auction of three critical mineral blocks in the third round, 14 blocks in the second round, and 14 in the first tranche of critical minerals as the response was lukewarm.
The government had earlier said that 24 critical and strategic mineral blocks have been sold in four rounds of auction.
"Out of 48 blocks put to e-auction, 24 have been successfully auctioned, including four mining lease (ML) and 20 composite licenses (CL) blocks," the mines ministry had said.
India is all set to launch a Critical Mineral Mission in the upcoming year to secure vital resources for green energy and technology.
The initiative involves government, industry, and research collaboration, focusing on acquiring overseas assets like lithium and cobalt, particularly in Australia, and boosting domestic mining through auctions and roadshows.
With a series of high-profile roadshows abroad along with plans to acquire critical mineral assets in Australia, India is set to woo international investors and make its mark on the global mining map.
The countries are now racing in a bid to secure these vital resources, which include lithium and cobalt, through a complex web of policies and alliances, realising that critical minerals are the new lifeblood of the 21st-century economy.
According to an estimate by the World Bank, by 2050, the production of minerals, including lithium and cobalt, will need to increase by nearly 500 per cent in a bid to meet the growing demand for clean energy technologies.
At the same time, the International Energy Agency foresees that the rise in electric vehicles and battery storage will speed up the demand for these minerals at least 30 times by 2040.
Critical minerals are also the backbone of the semiconductor industry.
As the country pushes to become a global hub for semiconductor manufacturing -- a sector that is likely to reach one trillion dollars globally by 2030 -- the need for a stable supply of critical minerals becomes even more urgent.
Semiconductors, tiny chips that power everything from smartphones to electric vehicles, depend heavily on materials like silicon, cobalt, and rare earth elements, in addition to access to technology. -- PTI
