15:30   Social instability would be 'triggered' if...: Owaisi
Observing that the Congress party alone can not defeat Prime Minister Narednra Modi, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen chief Asaduddin Owaisi has said the grand old party has to take on board everyone to succeed.

Addressing a public meeting at Vikarabad in Telangana on Friday night, he also said social instability would be "triggered" in the country if the waqf amendment bill is enacted into legislation.

Reacting to Congress' defeat in the recently held assembly polls in Haryana, he said 'secular' parties used to blame him for causing a split in anti-BJP votes in elections, and asked how the Mallikarjun Kharge-led party lost in the northern state though the AIMIM did not field candidates.

"How did they (BJP) win (Haryana)? I was not there. Otherwise, they would have said 'B Team'... They lost there. Now, you tell me, they lost because of whom?," he said, addressing a public meeting at Vikarabad.

"I would like to tell the old party. Understand what I am saying. You have to take everyone along to defeat Modi (BJP). You will not be able to do anything alone," he said.

The BJP clinched a stunning hat-trick win in Haryana, overcoming anti-incumbency and dashing Congress' hopes of a comeback. The saffron party won 48 of the 90 assembly seats in Haryana, well above the simple majority mark of 46.

Owaisi claimed that mosques and dargahs would be snatched away if the waqf bill becomes a legislation.

"I am telling Modi, if this waqf law is made, social instability would be created in the country. We will take the country to the 1980s and 1990s. We lost one mosque. We will not lose any mosque or graveyard now," he said.

In an indirect reference to Yati Narsinghanand, head priest of a temple in Uttar Pradesh, who allegedly made derogatory remarks on Prophet Muhammad, Owaisi claimed that "Modi and Yogi are protecting him". It is regrettable that he has not yet been arrested, he said.

Continuing his support for the Palestine cause, Owaisi asked why PM Modi is not speaking though "Israel attacked UN army" in Lebanon and 40,000 were killed in Gaza.

He also asked why India was giving weapons to Israel. -- PTI

14:42   Actor Sidhique questioned again by SIT in rape case
Malayalam film actor Sidhique was on Saturday questioned again by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) in a rape case registered against him.

This is the second time he has been questioned by the SIT in the case lodged on a complaint by a young woman actor.

Sidhique was questioned for close to two hours by the officials at the Cantonment police station in Thiruvananthapuram.

He arrived for questioning around 10.40 AM and left close to 12.30 PM.

The Supreme Court had granted Sidhique interim protection from arrest last week, after the Kerala High Court rejected his anticipatory bail plea.
The high court had cited the seriousness of the accusations and the need for custodial interrogation, while dismissing his bail plea.

13:53   8 Bangladeshis held for illegal stay in Karnataka
Eight Bangladeshi nationals who were staying illegally in Udupi district here were apprehended, police said on Saturday.

They were residing in Hoode village in the district for the past three years without valid passports or visas.

According to Udupi Superintendent of Police Arun K, the arrest came after one of the accused, identified as Mohammed Maniq, attempted to flee to Dubai from Mangaluru airport using a fake passport.

Suspicion from immigration officials led to his arrest at Bajpe airport in the neighbouring Dakshina Kannada district, he said. "Upon interrogation, Maniq revealed that seven other Bangladeshi nationals were staying with him illegally in Hoode village."

The information was relayed to the Udupi police, who subsequently conducted a raid in the area.

Police detained the seven individuals on Friday and initiated a detailed inquiry into their illegal stay. During the investigation, it was discovered that the accused possessed fake Aadhaar cards.

SP Arun stated that an investigation is underway to determine how the accused obtained these fraudulent Aadhaar cards and how they managed to cross the border into India from Bangladesh.

The eight Bangladeshi nationals are currently in police custody and are expected to be produced before a local court. -- PTI

The maharaja of the erstwhile princely state of Nawanagar, known as Jamnagar, in Gujarat, has declared his nephew and former cricketer Ajay Jadeja as his heir to the throne on the auspicious day of Dussehra on Saturday.

The 53-year-old cricketer, who played 196 ODIs and 15 test matches for India between 1992 and 2000, is a descendant of the Jamnagar royal family.

Maharaja of Jamnagar Shatrusalyasinh Jadeja is the cousin of Daulatsinghji Jadeja, the cricketer's father, a three-time Member of Parliament from Jamnagar from 1971 to 1984.

"The festival of Dussehra is believed to mark the day the Pandavas emerged victorious from exile. Today, on Dussehra, I am equally happy, as I have found a resolution to one of my dilemmas thanks to Ajay Jadeja, who has accepted to be my heir," Maharaja Jamsaheb, as he is popularly called, declared in a statement.

"Ajay Jadeja taking up the responsibility of serving the people of Jamnagar is truly a boon for its people. I express my sincere gratitude to him," he said.

13:29   How many more families must be destroyed?: Rahul after TN rail accident
Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Saturday attacked the Centre over the train accident in Tamil Nadu, saying no lessons have been learnt despite many lives lost in numerous accidents and asked how many more families must be destroyed before the government wakes up.

Gandhi asserted that accountability starts at the top.

An express train, at 75 kmph speed, hit a stationary goods train on Friday in Tamil Nadu as it entered a loop line instead of getting into the main line, railway officials said, adding that a number of passengers were injured and a coach caught fire.

In a post on X, Gandhi said, "The Mysuru-Darbhanga train accident mirrors the horrific Balasore accident, a passenger train colliding with a stationary goods train."

"Despite many lives lost in numerous accidents, no lessons are learned. Accountability starts at the top. How many more families must be destroyed before this government wakes up," the former Congress chief said.

Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also slammed the Centre over the train accident.

"Train accidents have become so common in the country that despite occurring one after another, neither any accountability is being fixed by the government nor any action is being taken," she said in a post in Hindi on her WhatsApp channel.

"Crores of common people of the country are forced to travel in trains running on the wheels of fear and chaos, risking their lives because the government has turned its back on the responsibility of safe train travel," she said.

Once again, an accident like Balasore has happened with the Mysore-Darbhanga Express in Tamil Nadu, Priyanka Gandhi said.

"When will this series going on for months stop? When will accountability be fixed," she asked.

Meanwhile, the Railway Board has said that no casualty has been reported so far in the passenger-freight train collision in the Ponneri-Kavarapettai section in Chennai Rail Division. -- PTI

12:12   Deep State, wokeism are enemies of...: RSS chief
Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh chief Mohan Bhagwat on Saturday said India has become stronger and more respected in the world with enhanced credibility in the last few years but sinister conspiracies are testing the country's resolve.

He said a narrative is being spread in Bangladesh that India is a threat and that they should join hands with Pakistan as a defence.

Bhagwat said firmness of personal and national character becomes the foundation of strength for the victory of auspiciousness and righteousness, whether the situation is favourable or not.

He was addressing the annual Vijayadasahmi rally of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in Nagpur.

"Everyone feels Bharat has become stronger and more respected in the world with enhanced credibility in the last few years. A country becomes great due to the national character of its people. This year is important as RSS steps into its centenary year," he said.

Besides hopes and aspirations, challenges and problems also exist in India, he said.

"We should draw inspiration from personalities like Ahilyabai Holkar, Dayananda Saraswati, Birsa Munda and many more who devoted their lives to the count's welfare, dharma, culture and society, said the RSS chief.

The ongoing Hamas-Israel war is a cause for concern about how far the conflict will spread, he said.

Bhagwat expressed satisfaction that the recent assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir were held peacefully.

"Due to the people, government and administration, the country's image, power, fame and position on the world stage is growing. But sinister conspiracies have appeared to destabilise and disturb the country," he said.

According to Bhagwat, a narrative is being spread in neighbouring Bangladesh, which recently witnessed a massive political upheaval, that India is a threat and they should join Pakistan as a defence against Bharat. Who is spreading such a narrative, he asked.

The RSS chief said a tyrannical fundamentalist nature exists in Bangladesh. A sword of danger hangs over the heads of minorities, including Hindus. Hindus have now come out to defend themselves, he added.

"Being unorganised and weak is like inviting atrocities by the wicked. Hindus need to be united," he stressed.

'Deep State', 'wokeism' and 'cultural Marxist' are declared enemies of all cultural traditions, Bhagwat said. -- PTI

10:24   Groww grows, Zerodha slips, AngelOne rises
Sundar Sethuraman/Business Standard

The number of active investors on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) have jumped 44 per cent over the past one year to 47.9 million at the end of September 2024.

The surge in active clients is underpinned by the rally in the markets, with the Nifty 50, Nifty Midcap 100, and the Nifty Smallcap 100 indices gaining over 25 per cent each.

Broking industry officials said an upward trending market encourages more investors to actively trade in the market.

A break up of brokerage-wise clients shows investors increasingly preferring new-age discount brokerages to traditional full-scale ones. The combined market share of top five discount brokers accounts has risen to 64.5 per cent from 61.9 per cent in September 2023. Meanwhile, Groww has cemented its lead with 12.3 million active clients -- 25.6 per cent market share, up from 20 per cent a year ago.

Erstwhile, market leader Zerodha has seen its market share slip from 19.4 per cent a year ago to 16.6 per cent.

AngelOne has closed the gap with Zerodha, with the formers active clients at 7.4 million against 8 million for the latter.

Therefore, the total active clients are about half of the unique investors registered with the NSE and also a fraction of the total 175 million demat accounts in the country.

Harsh Kumar/Business Standard

India's net direct tax collection this financial year, after adjusting for refunds, grew 18.35 per cent to Rs 11.3 trillion between April 1 and October 10.

In the same period last year, collection was at Rs 9.51 trillion, according to the I-T departments latest data released on Friday.

Of the tax mopup, personal income tax (PIT) outpaced corporation tax.
PIT stood at Rs 5.98 trillion (net) as against Rs 4.88 trillion in the same period a year ago. Corporation tax (net) reported at Rs 4.95 trillion, an increase of 11.2 per cent, which is slightly lower than the growth rate of 12 per cent set for this financial year.

Direct taxes comprise PIT and corporation tax.

Securities transaction tax, part of PIT, jumped to Rs 30,630 crore (Rs 306.30 billion) from Rs 16,373 crore (Rs 163.73 billion) in the same period a year ago. This could be attributed to changes in tax rates and increase in stock-market trading.

Gross direct tax collection (before refunds) stood at Rs 13.57 trillion, marking a 22.30 per cent rise from the previous financial year, according to the department.

The government issued direct-tax refunds of Rs 2.31 trillion till October 11. That is an increase of 46.03 per cent over the Rs 1.6 trillion in the corresponding period in FY24.

The Centre aims to raise gross tax revenue of Rs 38.40 trillion in FY25, according to the Budget.

The Budget set a target of Rs 22.07 trillion from direct taxes and Rs 16.33 trillion from indirect taxes.

09:02   MP drug haul: Accused shoots himself in foot, surrenders
An accused in the mega mephedrone drug seizure in Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh allegedly shot himself in the foot to escape 'tough police grilling' and then surrendered in Mandsaur, an official has said.

The Gujarat Anti-Terrorist Squad and the Narcotics Control Bureau on October 5 seized 907.09 kg of mephedrone and raw materials to make the drug worth Rs 1,814 crore from a factory in Bagroda in Bhopal.

"Premsukh Patidar alias 'farzi doctor' (phony doctor) was on the run after the drug haul. "A weapon was seized from Patidar, who has been admitted to the district hospital. The pistol seems to be illegal. Patidar wounded himself in a bid to avoid tough police grilling," the SP said.

08:51   120 rockets fired at Israel as Yom Kippur begins
The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) said on Saturday that multiple rocket launches have been identified from Lebanon since the Yom Kippur fast started.

Two UAVs were identified crossing from Lebanon into central Israel, according to IDF.

A hit on a civilian building was identified and one UAV was intercepted.

In a post on X, IDF stated, "Since the beginning of the Yom Kippur fast, multiple rocket launches have been identified from Lebanon. A short while ago, two UAVs were identified crossing from Lebanon into central Israel. The UAVs were monitored from the moment they crossed the Lebanese border. A hit on a civilian building was identified and one UAV was intercepted."

Israel shut down late on Friday afternoon for Yom Kippur, the Jewish Day of Atonement and the holiest day of the Jewish calendar.

For the first time since 1973, Israel is engaged in an active war on the Holy Day, The Times of Israel reported.

Israel was on high alert, with soldiers continuing combat operations in Lebanon and Gaza and special alert systems were placed to warn the people amid near-constant rocket fire and ongoing tensions with Iran.

Over 120 rockets were fired at Israel in the first hours of the holiday.

The day also marked a period of introspection as Israel reflected on a year of pain and suffering after the October 7 Hamas attack, following which Israel has been engaged in war with the terrorist group.

Considering the security situation, the IDF Home Front Command urged people to ensure that they can access special warning systems to alert them regarding specific dangers like rocket and missile attacks, or to broader warnings in case of a further outbreak of war.

People can activate a broadcast station on radios and televisions that will transmit in silence, except rocket warning sirens, which will be aired out loud, in real-time, according to The Times of Israel report.

The Home Front Command will continue to use warning systems on cell phones and through its app for warning about incoming rockets.

Over 120 rockets were fired at northern Israel in the hour before the fast started, with the majority being intercepted. Several rockets fell in open areas and caused fire. However, there were no reports regarding injuries.

For religious and traditional Jews, the 25-hour period of fasting and praying began at 5:51 pm (local time) in Tel Aviv and will end at 6:48 pm (local time) on Saturday.

Currently, Israeli troops are fighting in the Gaza Strip and southern Lebanon. Furthermore, the IDF said on Friday it was bolstering its West Bank presence with more combat platoons to guard settlements and the security barrier, after a recent situational assessment, The Times of Israel reported.

Israel police were on high alert across the country after the recent terror attacks. Hospitals in Israel were also operating on an emergency footing with teams ready to respond to any events.

Despite the ongoing war, much of the country shut down as per the traditions. All flights in and out of Ben Gurion Airport stopped operations at 2 pm (local time) on Friday.

The airport will reopen Saturday night, with arrivals starting at 10:30 pm, while departures will begin an hour later, according to The Times of Israel report.

During this period, Israel's air space is also shut for flights passing through. Border crossings have been also closed and will reopen late Saturday. Trains stopped operations at 1 pm and will start operating on Sunday morning.

Roads were largely clear of cars by early Friday evening, as is the national tradition. Driving during the Jewish Day of Atonement is considered taboo.  -- ANI
