23:40 Row after Assam Rifles stops Mizoram min convoy
The Mizoram government will seek the Centre's intervention over the alleged stoppage of a minister's convoy by Assam Rifles, a senior leader of the ruling Zoram People's Movement said on Monday.
Power and electricity minister F Rodingliana's convoy was allegedly stopped by Assam Rifles personnel during a routine check recently, sparking a row.
Ministers, opposition MLAs, political parties and a student body accused the paramilitary force of not honouring the standard protocol and showing no respect to the elected public representative.
The Assam Rifles denied the allegations, describing them as attempts to malign the image of the country's oldest paramilitary force.
"Chief Minister Lalduhoma, who is now camping in Delhi, will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah and discuss the matter with them," the leader who is also a state minister said on condition of anonymity.
Meanwhile, Mizoram home minister K Sapdanga issued a statement extending solidarity to minister F Rodingliana.

21:36 Can't allow sale of firecrackers: Delhi HC
The Delhi high court on Monday said it cannot allow the sale of firecrackers when there is already "enough" pollution in the national capital.
The court's oral observation came while dealing with a petition by the 'Delhi Fireworks Shopkeepers Association', a group of traders with a "permanent" licence to possess and sell crackers.
The petitioner's counsel said the grievance of the traders was with respect to the ban on the storage of firecrackers as it was allegedly resulting in harassment.
During the hearing, the court said it would ask authorities to seal the traders' premises being used for storage of firecrackers to ensure that there is no pilferage.
"The state must be involved in the sealing process so that there is no pilferage," said Justice Sanjeev Narula.
"We are not going to allow you to sell. There is enough pollution in this city," added the judge orally.
The petitioner's counsel said that even though no crackers were being sold by its members, soon after the ban order, the police started visiting the permanent licensees questioning why they were storing the firecrackers. -- PTI

19:05 When scammers cloned telecom czar Sunil Mittal's voice to con his executive
Scammers often use AI voice clones to con commoners to transfer money or disclose financial information but it's rare when they try to impersonate a billionaire.
This is exactly what scammers tried to do by cloning telecom czar Sunil Bharti Mittal's voice to scam his executive in Dubai to transfer money.
Fortunately, the executive was smart enough to realise Mittal won't ask for such a huge money transfer and the scam was stopped in its tracks.
On Monday, speaking at the NDTV World Summit, Mittal cited the incident to caution people about the risks posed by misuse of emerging technologies like AI.
Mittal recounted how the said executive stationed in Dubai received a fraudulent call that seemed to mimic his voice and tone and directed that a large fund transfer be done.
The official who was vigilant and "sensible" immediately realised it was a scam, Mittal said admitting that when he heard the voice recording himself he was completely "stunned" as "it was perfectly articulated just as I would speak".
"And anyone who would not have been vigilant may have done something about it," Mittal said and warned that in future misuse of technology would enable fraudsters to go a step ahead and misuse digital signatures, even replicate faces on zoom calls to perpetrate such acts. -- PTI

18:12 MVA has reached consensus on 210 seats: Raut
The Maha Vikas Aghadi has reached consensus on 210 of the 288 assembly seats in Maharashtra, which is a "significant achievement", Shiv Sena-Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray leader Sanjay Raut said on Monday.
The aim is to ensure the defeat of forces looting Maharashtra, he said in a swipe at the ruling alliance comprising Chief Minister Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena, the BJP and Ajit Pawar-led NCP.
"We have arrived at a consensus on 210 seats. It is a significant achievement. We aim to contest polls as a joint force and we will defeat the forces looting Maharashtra," Raut, a Rajya Sabha MP and key strategist for the Shiv Sena-UBT, told reporters.
The MVA comprises the Shiv Sena-UBT, the Congress and Sharad Pawar's NCP-SP. Raut's comments came amid a flurry of news channel reports that the Uddhav Thackeray-led party may break away from the MVA and contest all 288 seats on its own.
The past few days have seen hectic parleys among the three main opposition parties to finalise a seat-sharing deal, with speculation doing the rounds of the Congress and Shiv Sena-UBT not being on the same page.
The statement from Raut also comes amid speculation of Union Home Minister Amit Shah having a phone conservation with him, hinting at the Shiv Sena-UBT and BJP, which were allies for decades before going their separate ways in 2019, getting back together. -- PTI

16:43 On Modi-Xi meeting at BRICS, China says...
China's Foreign Ministry on Monday parried questions on a possible meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in Russia this week.
"We will keep you posted if anything comes up," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said while replying to a question at a media briefing in Beijing. Both Modi and Xi are attending the BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia, which begins Tuesday.
Ahead of Prime Minister Modi's visit to Kazan, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said in New Delhi on Monday that Indian and Chinese negotiators have reached an agreement on patrolling along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh. There was no reaction in Beijing to the agreement announced by Misri. The ties between India and China nosedived following the fierce clash in the Galwan Valley in June 2020 that marked the most serious military conflict between the two sides in decades.
China last Friday announced that Xi will attend the BRICS Summit in Russia, where he will work with other parties to open a new era for the Global South to seek strength through solidarity. BRICS originally consisted of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates have been admitted as new members.

12:02 CRPF school blast: Police write to Telegram app
Delhi Police probing a possible Khalistani link in the blast near a CRPF school in New Delhi on Monday wrote to messaging app Telegram to know the details of a group that claimed responsibility of the explosion, police sources said on Monday.
A strong blast ripped through a wall of the CRPF school in Rohini's Prashant Vihar area on Sunday morning. No one was hurt in the blast but a signboard, hoardings of nearby shops and window panes of vehicles parked near the spot were damaged in the incident.
In its FIR filed on the incident, a copy of which has been accessed by PTI, police has mentioned a "white powder found scattered" at the site and said the explosion was caused by "unknown explosive substance". Meanwhile, police sources also said they have recovered CCTV footage of a suspect from the night before the incident. A purported Telegram post circulated on social media, which claimed that the blast was carried out in retaliation to the "targeting" of pro-Khalistan separatists allegedly by Indian agents.
The post surfaced on social media late on Sunday evening pointing to the possible involvement of pro-Khalistani separatists behind the blast.
"The police has written to Telegram to the know details of the creator of the group - Justice League Indian - in which the CCTV of the blast was shared with a Khalistan Zindabad watermark on it," a police source said.
A Telegram post by "Justice League India" read, "If Indian coward agency and their master think they can hire filthy goons to target our members to silence our voice then they live in fools world. They can't imagine how close we are to them and how capable we are to strike anytime #KhalistanZindabad #JLI."
A team of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) visited the spot on Monday morning. Sources said police has recovered a CCTV in which a suspect in white T-shirt is spotted on the spot, a night before the blast. It is suspected that an Improvised Explosive Device (IED), wrapped in a plastic bag, was hid in a one-feet-deep pit near the CRPF school wall, they said. The teams of Delhi Police Special Cell, Crime Branch and local police are investigating the case.
An FIR under Sections 326(g) (mischief with severe consequences to public safety) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act and Explosives Act was registered at Prashant Vihar police station. The FIR stated that there had been a "loud noise accompanied by white fumes of smoke" near the outer boundary wall of the CRPF Public School on Lancer Road. A hole, caused by the blast, in the boundary wall of the school is evident, the FIR said.
Window panes and signboards of shops opposite the CRPF school were damaged due to the blast's impact, it said. During the inspection, white powder was found scattered near the site, the FIR said. Samples of "white powder" and soil collected from the spot were sent to the laboratory to ascertain the bomb's composition. The explosion was caused by an unknown explosive substance, it added.

09:08 Trudeau made sure...: : India's envoy to Canada
India's envoy to Canada has accused Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of destroying the ties between the two countries, asserting that he had nothing to do with the killing of a Khalistani separatist and that the charges against him are "politically motivated".
India recently expelled six Canadian diplomats and announced that it was withdrawing its high commissioner in Canada Sanjay Kumar Verma after dismissing Ottawa's allegations linking the envoy to the probe into the killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
Canada, however, said it had expelled six Indian diplomats.
In an interview with Canada's private broadcaster CTV News aired on Sunday, Verma said that Trudeau's allegations over Nijjar's killing were based on intelligence inputs rather than concrete evidence.
"The problem is that when he accused, he himself admitted there was no hard evidence. There was intelligence. On the basis of intelligence, if you want to destroy a relationship, be my guest. And that's what he (Trudeau) did," Verma said.
Testifying before the public inquiry into foreign interference in federal electoral processes and democratic institutions last week, Trudeau admitted that he had only intelligence and no "hard evidentiary proof" when he alleged the involvement of Indian government agents in the killing of Nijjar.
"Nothing at all. No evidence was presented (by Canada). (This is) politically motivated," the outgoing Indian envoy said when asked by the anchor if he had anything to do with Nijjar's killing.
Nijjar, who was declared a terrorist by India, was shot dead outside a gurdwara in Surrey, British Columbia, on June 18 last year.
The Indian diplomat said Canada didn't follow the practice which should have been there.
"Evidence should have been shared first, but someone decided to stand in the Parliament and talk about a thing for which he himself has said there was 'no hard evidence'," he said, referring to Trudeau's address in the Canadian Parliament in September last year when he alleged involvement of Indian government's agents in the killing of Nijjar.
"And the day on which he did that, since then, he has made it sure that the bilateral relation with India only goes downwards, spiralling down," the diplomat said. -- PTI
