20:36   Quite shocking: Tharoor on Maha minister's 'EVM' remark
Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Saturday described Maharashtra minister Nitesh Rane's alleged "EVM" remark as "shocking".

Stating that targeting any particular community is wrong, Tharoor asserted that everyone is an equal citizen of the country and that's the only way for the country to progress.

Maharashtra's Fisheries and Ports Minister Nitesh Rane, addressing a Hindu Garjana Sabha in Sangli on Friday, reportedly made derogatory remarks saying, "EVM means, Every Vote against Mullah."

"This is quite shocking. In our country, we really have to understand the basic lesson of the freedom struggle, which is that when one set of people said that religion is the basis of their nationhood, they went away and created Pakistan," Tharoor told news agency ANI,

Tharoor added, We are all equal individual citizens of India, and that is the only basis on which our country can progress.

"I must say that people picking on any one community, whether it's against Muslims, Hindus, Christians, or any caste, that is all wrong. We are all equal individual citizens of India, and that is the only basis on which our country can progress," he added.

19:15   Kejriwal claims BJP to name Bidhuri as Delhi CM face
Aam Aadmi Party national convener Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday claimed that the BJP has picked former MP Ramesh Bidhuri as its chief ministerial candidate for the upcoming Delhi assembly elections and will soon make the announcement.

Addressing a press conference in New Delhi, the former chief minister also challenged Bidhuri to a public debate.

"We have come to know from reliable sources that the BJP is going to name Ramesh Bidhuri as its CM candidate in the next one or two days," Kejriwal claimed.

"There should be an open public debate between the chief ministerial candidates of the AAP and the BJP, whether it is Ramesh Bidhuri or anyone else," he said.

"Yes, we are challenging the BJP to a debate," Kejriwal said in response to questions from reporters.

The BJP has fielded Bidhuri from Kalkaji assembly constituency. He will take on AAP candidate and Delhi Chief Minister Atishi, who is seeking re-election from the seat.

On Friday, Atishi also claimed that the BJP was going to name Bidhuri as its CM face and criticised the party for picking a leader who "hurls the most abuses".

Bidhuri's recent remarks about Atishi triggered a controversy.

18:11   Priyanka slams Modi as rupee hits all-time low
Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Saturday demanded answers from the government on the value of the rupee reaching its "lowest level ever" against the US dollar.

The rupee declined 18 paise to breach the 86-mark against the US dollar for the first time on Friday. It settled at 86.04 against the US currency.

"The value of rupee against the dollar has reached its lowest level ever. For the first time in history, the value of one dollar has become 86.4 rupees," Priyanka Gandhi said in a post in Hindi on X.

She said during Manmohan Singh's tenure, when the value of one dollar was 58-59 rupees, Narendra Modi used to link the value of the rupee with the prestige of the government.

He used to say, "I know everything. The currency of any country cannot fall like this...", she said.

"Today he himself is the prime minister and all the records on the fall of the rupee have been broken. He should answer to the people of the country," the Congress leader said.-- PTI

17:44   2 rhino horns worth 3 crores seized by Delhi Police, 4 held
Delhi Police's Crime Branch apprehended four people for allegedly being involved in the possession and illegal trade of two rare rhinoceros horns, valued at Rs 3 crore in the international market, an official said on Saturday.

The arrested individuals are Deepak Sharma (57), a resident of Lajpat Nagar; Suresh Kumar (57), Sant Ram (57), and Anil Kumar Sethi (60), all residents of Uttam Nagar, police said.

The four of them were found to be involved in the illegal trade of horns from a white rhinoceros, police added.

White rhinoceros is a species native to African countries and is considered highly endangered.

The police received a tip-off about the illegal trade, following which a raid was conducted in Lajpat Nagar on January 9, police added.

"As part of the operation, constable Naveen was deployed as a decoy customer. After negotiations, the deal for the sale of the horns was finalised for Rs 1 crore, with the perpetrators planning to deliver the horns to the buyer. The team raided a flat in Lajpat Nagar, where they apprehended the four accused and recovered the two horns," said

Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) Sanjay Kumar Sain.
The officer further stated that upon questioning, the accused failed to provide any documentation to prove the legal possession of the horns.

Wildlife experts who examined the horns confirmed they were from a white rhinoceros. The horns, which have significant value in the international market due to their rarity and demand, police said.

17:43   Shivakumar rules out any 'political turn' amid rumblings
The people of Karnataka have blessed the Congress for five years and he and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah will continue functioning as per the directions of the party high command, Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar said on Saturday, while seeking to downplay reports of power tussle within the ruling party.

With supporters hailing him as the 'next Chief Minister' on his arrival in Chikkamagaluru, Shivakumar, who is also the state Congress President, said he does not need anyone's support and will abide by what the party tells him.

"No one should worry; there is no need for any political turn. People have blessed us and given us an opportunity, and we will continue for five years. All the talks going on are without any value. The Chief Minister and I will continue functioning as per the directions of the party," Shivakumar told reporters in response to a question.

Asked about workers or supporters demanding that he should be the next CM, Shivakumar said, "I don't want anyone to demand anything from me; I don't want anyone's support. I do not need any legislator's backing. This is between me and the Congress party. Whatever the Congress party says, I will function accordingly. I don't want workers or legislators to shout for me or stand in my support. I will do my duty."

"I believe in the saying: 'Karmanye vadhikaraste ma phaleshu kadachana' make your efforts, and leave the results to God," he added.

His comments came a day after his cabinet colleague K N Rajanna, who is close to Siddaramaiah, suggested that Shivakumar should aim to become Chief Minister by successfully leading the party in the next elections, rather than aspiring for the top post during the remaining two and a half years of the incumbent government.

Following Siddaramaiah's recent dinner with select Dalit and Scheduled Tribe (ST) Cabinet colleagues, speculation about a possible change of leadership in Karnataka has created a buzz within the Congress. There are rumours of a "rotational chief minister" or "power-sharing" formula being implemented after March.

After the assembly election results in May 2023, there was intense competition between Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar for the Chief Minister's post.

The Congress eventually convinced Shivakumar to take the role of Deputy Chief Minister. At the time, reports suggested that a compromise had been reached under a "rotational chief minister formula," which would make Shivakumar the Chief Minister after two and a half years. However, the party has not officially confirmed this arrangement.

Shivakumar, a Vokkaliga, has been open about his ambition to become Chief Minister.

A meeting of Congress leaders, ministers, and lawmakers from SC/ST communities, scheduled for Wednesday evening under the leadership of Home Minister G Parameshwara and supported by K N Rajanna, was postponed following instructions from AICC General Secretary in charge of Karnataka, Randeep Singh Surjewala.

Sources indicate that the postponement came after Shivakumar, a strong contender for the CM post, met AICC General Secretary (Organisation) K C Venugopal in New Delhi on Monday night to discuss party developments.

A section within the Congress believes that the planned SC/ST convention and Parameshwara's meeting could revive the demand for a Dalit or AHINDA (a Kannada acronym for minorities, backward classes, and Dalits) leader to become the next Chief Minister. This demand could complicate Shivakumar's prospects if Siddaramaiah steps down after the state budget, as speculated.

Addressing criticism from the media and opposition leaders over his recent temple visits being labelled a "temple run," Shivakumar said, "I do puja every day. I believe in dharma. For my wellness and the wellness of the state, society, and the people who believe in me, I pray. It is each one's personal belief." -- PTI

17:23   Now, 9-month-old child tests positive for HMPV in Gujarat
Gujarat has reported its fourth human metapneumovirus (HMPV) case, with a nine-month-old child contracting the infection in Ahmedabad, officials said Saturday. All the cases have been reported in less than a week.

The baby boy was admitted to a private hospital in the city on January 6 with a cold, cough and difficulty in breathing. He has no history of foreign or other travel, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation said.

On Friday, an eight-year-old boy from Sabarkantha district was confirmed to be infected with HMPV, making him the third case in the state.

Two days back, an 80-year-old man tested positive for the viral infection in Ahmedabad. The patient, who has been suffering from asthma, is currently being treated at a private hospital.

Gujarat recorded its first case of HMPV on January 6, when a two-month-old boy from Rajasthan was found to be afflicted with the viral disease, which has symptoms like fever, nasal congestion, runny nose, and cough. He was discharged after being treated at a hospital here.

With the infant's infection, the state has seen four HMPV cases since January 6.

HMPV, discovered in 2001, belongs to the Paramyxoviridae family. It is closely related to the Respiratory Syncytial Virus. It spreads through respiratory droplets from coughing or sneezing as well as by touching contaminated surfaces or coming into direct contact with infected individuals. -- PTI

16:49   Relief for Allu Arjun as court relaxes bail conditions
In a major relief to actor Allu Arjun, a court here has relaxed the conditions of his bail in the Pushpa 2 stampede case, exempting him from appearing before the investigating officer every Sunday.

The court also permitted him to travel abroad to specified countries, with the condition that he must undertake to appear before the SHO of the Chikkadpally police station as and when required.

He has been directed to inform the SHO of his travel schedule for each trip and provide details of his place of stay in the destination country until the charge sheet is filed.

The remaining bail conditions remain unchanged, the court noted in its order dated January 10.

The court's decision followed a petition filed by the actor seeking relaxation of the bail conditions.

Previously, while granting regular bail to Allu Arjun on January 3, the court had instructed him to appear before the investigating officer every Sunday between 10 am and 1 pm for two months or until the filing of the charge sheet, whichever is earlier.

He was also barred from leaving the country without prior court permission.

Additionally, the court had directed the actor to cooperate with the inquiry and refrain from interfering with the ongoing investigation or influencing witnesses in any manner. -- PTI

He said the fight against drugs has gained a new strength under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership.

"No country can move forward on the path of development with a young generation suffering from drug addiction. It is our responsibility that we all fight this challenge together and make all efforts to win this battle," he said.

Shah said that during 2004-14, a total of 3.63 kg of drugs were seized while during 2014-24, altogether 24 lakh kg of drugs were seized - a seven-fold increase as compared to the previous decade.

12:43   BJP attacks Kejriwal with 'AAP-da-e-azam' poster
The BJP on Saturday launched a song and poster on "Sheesh Mahal",  sharpening its attack on AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal on the issue of corruption, ahead of assembly polls on February 5.

The song "Sheesh Mahal Aapda Failane Walon Ka Adda" and a poster titled "Aapda-e-Azam" were released during a press conference of Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva.

"The person who came to power for a change and to take care of Delhi modified his own character and behaviour. Delhi people are looking for development while Kejriwal is abusing them for asking questions," Sachdeva said.

He said that the released song narrates the story of Kejriwal's "corruption" and the "Sheesh Mahal" readied with taxpayers' money.

"Sheesh Mahal" is a political moniker used by the BJP for 6, Flagstaff Road bungalow occupied earlier by Kejriwal as Delhi chief minister to accuse him of "corruption".

The AAP has hit back at the BJP citing expenditure on the residence and plane used by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Ahead of the Assembly polls, Modi attacked Kejriwal recently in the "Parivartan Rally" at Rohini, over "Sheesh Mahal" and dubbed AAP as "Aapda" (disaster) for Delhi, giving a call to replace it with BJP in power.

The "Aapda-e-Azam" showed Kejriwal's photoshopped image in an imperial Mughal attire.

"People used to go to have a look at the palaces of the Mughals during their rule. The Sheesh Mahal built by Delhi's Aapda-e-Azam (Kejriwal) is a blot on the city," Sachdeva charged. -- PTI

12:23   Sena-UBT ditches MVA, to go solo in BMC polls
Shiv Sena-UBT leader Sanjay Raut on Saturday said his party will contest the upcoming elections to the various local bodies alone.

Talking to reporters, the Rajya Sabha MP said the INDIA bloc and Maha Vikas Aghadi alliances were for the Lok Sabha and assembly polls.

"In an alliance, workers of individual parties don't get opportunities, and it hampers organisational growth. We will contest polls to the Mumbai, Thane, Nagpur and other municipal corporations, zilla parishads and panchayats on our strength," he said.

He said party chief Uddhav Thackeray gave the party indications that it should go alone.

Hitting out at Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar for indulging in a blame game over the MVA's defeat in the state assembly, Raut said those who don't believe in consensus and compromise have no right to be in an alliance.

He further claimed that the INDIA bloc did not hold a single meeting after the Lok Sabha elections.

"We were not able to appoint even a convenor for INDIA bloc. It isn't good. As the largest party of the alliance, it was the Congress's responsibility to convene a meeting," the Sena-UBT leader said.

Reacting to Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar's remark that he has never mentioned farm loan waivers in his speeches, Raut said, "Even if he hasn't spoken about it. Farm loan waiver and Rs 2,100 for Laadki Bahin beneficiaries are mentioned in the BJP's poll manifesto. These two promises have to be implemented. He is the finance minister in the BJP government, and he will have to do it."

To a query on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's remarks during his first podcast that he is human and can make mistakes, Raut said, "He (Modi) is god. I don't consider him a human. God is god. If someone declares him an incarnation of god, how can he be a human? He is the 13th avatar of Vishnu. If someone who has been considered god says he is human, something is wrong. There is chemical 'locha'." -- PTI

11:07   Indian economy likely to be 'little weaker': IMF MD
The Indian economy is expected to be 'a little weaker' in 2025 despite steady global growth, International Monetary Fund managing director Kristalina Georgieva has said.

Georgieva also said she expects quite a lot of uncertainty in the world this year mainly around the trade policy of the United States.

In her annual media roundtable with a group of reporters on Friday, she said global growth is expected to be steady in 2025, but with regional divergence.

Georgieva said she expects the Indian economy to be a little weaker in 2025. However, she did not explain it any further.

The World Economy Outlook update week will have more details about it.

"The US is doing quite a bit better than we expected before, the EU is somewhat stalling, (and) India a little weaker," she said.

Brazil was facing somewhat higher inflation, she said.

In China, the world's second-largest economy, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) was seeing deflationary pressure and ongoing challenges with domestic demand, she said.

"Low-income countries, despite all the efforts they are making, are in a position when any new shock can affect them quite negatively," Georgieva said.

"What we expect in 2025 is to have quite a lot of uncertainty, especially in terms of economic policies. Not surprisingly, given the size and role of the US economy, there is keen interest globally in the policy directions of the incoming administration, in particular on tariffs, taxes, deregulation and government efficiency," Georgieva said.

"This uncertainty is particularly high around the path for trade policy going forward, adding to the headwinds facing the global economy, especially for countries and regions that are more integrated in global supply chains, medium-sized economies, (and) Asia as a region," she said.

That uncertainty is actually expressed globally through higher long-term interest rates, even though short-term interest rates have gone down, the IMF Managing Director said.

Donald Trump will be sworn in as the 47th President of the United States on January 20, replacing Joe Biden at the White House.

Trump, 78, has announced plans to impose additional tariffs on countries like China, Canada and Mexico. He has publicly announced the use of tariffs as a key policy tool.

On inflation, the IMF expects global disinflation to continue, Georgieva said.

"As we all recognise, the higher interest rates that were necessary to fight inflation did not push the world economy into recession. They have delivered the desired results. Headline inflation is converging back to target sooner in advanced economies than in emerging markets," she said.   -- PTI

Despite the closures and market correction, SIP inflows remain unaffected.

In December, investors poured in a record Rs 26,459 crore (Rs 264.59 billion) into MF schemes via SIPs.

The surge in account closures has weighed heavily on the net addition of active SIP accounts, with the industry adding only 0.9 million accounts in December, the lowest in seven months.

"With the market turning volatile, investors who are new to equity investing could have felt a bit jittery. As a result, the closures may have gone up," said Anand Varadarajan, chief business officer at Tata Asset Management.

The benchmark Nifty 50 index ended December in the red, marking its third consecutive monthly decline.

The index dropped 2 per cent last month and has fallen over 10 per cent from its all-time high in September.

The rising base of SIP accounts, according to experts, is another factor contributing to the growing number of closures.

SIP data is often regarded as a key indicator of retail investor behaviour, given that systematic investment plans are predominantly used by individual investors.

While closures have surged, the opening of new SIP accounts has slowed after peaking at 7.3 million in July 2024. In December, 5.4 million new SIPs were registered.

For the whole of 2024, active SIP accounts rose by 26.8 million to 103 million, compared to an addition of 15.1 million accounts in 2023.

The growth in openings was driven by increased new investor participation, strong performances across asset classes, and record-breaking new fund offerings.

09:38   150 yrs of IMD: Pak to join fete, Bangladesh won't
Bangladeshi officials will not attend the 150th-anniversary celebrations of the India Meteorological Department (IMD), authorities said on Friday, citing restrictions on non-essential foreign travel at government expense.

Mominul Islam, the acting director of the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD), confirmed receiving the invitation from the IMD a month ago, saying: "The India Meteorological Department invited us to their 150th anniversary celebrations. We maintain good relations and continue to collaborate with them."

"However, we are not going to the event as there is an obligation to limit non-essential foreign trips funded by the government," Islam told bdnews 24.

He emphasised the regular contact between the two agencies, noting his recent visit to India on December 20, 2024, for a separate meeting with Indian meteorologists.

The IMD invited several neighbouring nations -- including Pakistan, Afghanistan, Myanmar, Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives -- and countries from the Middle East and Southeast Asia.

A top IMD official told PTI: "We have asked all the countries that were part of India when IMD was launched (150 years ago) to join this festival."

"Pakistan has already agreed to join the event, but Bangladesh has not responded."

Founded in 1875 during British colonial rule, the IMD was established in response to devastating weather events, including the cyclone that ravaged Kolkata in 1864 and subsequent monsoon-related disasters in 1866 and 1871.

Initially headquartered in Kolkata, the IMD relocated several times, moving to Shimla in 1905, Pune in 1928, and eventually Delhi in 1944. The department will officially mark its sesquicentennial on January 15, 2025. -- PTI

09:13   $35 billion IPOs in 2025
The momentum in the equity market is likely to continue with initial public offerings (IPOs) worth $35 billion in the next 12 months, Kotak Investment Banking said on Friday.

India is the second-largest market in the world when it comes to equity fundraising and it saw the highest-ever fundraising ($74 billion) in 2024.

"India was probably 14% of the global equity capital markets. So, that really was a pleasant surprise," said V Jayasankar, MD, Kotak Investment Banking.

According to the investment bank, fundraising activity in India has been notably broad-based, spanning all sectors, unlike global capital markets such as the US, which are often dominated by a few key industries like technology, healthcare, or financial services.

In contrast, India's equity capital market saw robust performance across all major sectors. Domestic investments provided resilience amid geopolitical risks and market volatility.

Despite the muted foreign portfolio investor inflows, robust inflows of $62 billion from domestic institutional investors, backed by increasing SIP flows, provided stability and smoother execution of equity capital market transactions compared to other global markets.

Kotak Investment Banking said deal sizes are consistently increasing across products, highlighting the depth of Indian markets, with more than 30 $500 million deals last year.

Further, MNCs prefer India as a listing destination by making their subsidiaries debut on Indian bourses. MNCs are also increasingly monetising their holdings, contributing almost one-third of sell-downs in 2024.  -- Business Standard

09:11   63% Of Nifty 500 stocks below long-term avg
Rex Cano/Business Standard

Prolonged weakness in the benchmark indices seems to have taken a toll on the overall market breadth, with a vast majority of the stocks now trading below the long-term moving average.

The 200-Day Moving Average (DMA) is said to be the long-term moving average, and stocks trading above the same are said to be holding a positive (bullish) bias and vice versa.

As of Friday, a vast majority  -- 316 stocks or 63 per cent of the Nifty 500 stocks had dropped below this key moving average.

Similar is the case with index frontliners 31 out of the Nifty 50 stocks were seen trading below the 200-DMA.

In the case of the Nifty MidCap 150 and SmallCap 250 indices -- 95 out of the 150 midcaps and 144 out of the 250 smallcaps had slipped below the long-term threshold.

The NSE Nifty 50 index had dipped to a low of 23,344, and was down 0.8 per cent at the lowest point of the day.

When compared with its long-term moving average, the index has been quoting below the same for the last five trading sessions. The Nifty 200-DMA now stands at 23,907.

According to Sameet Chavan, Head Research, Technical and Derivative -- Angel One, the Nifty is seen testing crucial support around 23,500- 23,450 levels, which has served as a solid base since December and aligns with the lower boundary of a 'Falling Channel' pattern on the hourly chart.

09:09   FPIs exit India debt market
Anjali Kumari/Business Standard

Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs), which returned to the domestic debt market in December after two consecutive months of net selling, started withdrawing again in January.

This came as the yield spread between US Treasury yields and domestic government bond yields narrowed, according to market participants.

They said that the first quarter of the year poses significant challenges for both the Indian bond and equity markets.

This is because the yield spread between the 10-year US bond yield and domestic benchmark 10-year government bond yield has narrowed by 13 basis points (bps) so far in January.

The next 2-3 months will be particularly difficult to attract capital, apart from any inflows tied to index-related adjustments, they said.

Foreign investors bought a net Rs 7,080 crore (Rs 70.80 billion) worth of government securities designated under the fully accessible route (FAR) in December.

Meanwhile, they have sold a net Rs 3,409 crore (Rs 34.09 billion) worth of FAR securities in January so far, according to data by the Clearing Corporation of India.

The first quarter of the year is going to be very tricky for the Indian bond and equity markets. Flows will be tricky because the spread has shrunk, said Anshul Chandak, head of treasury at RBL Bank.

Foreign investors were net sellers of FAR securities during October-November, driven by lower-than-expected growth in the second quarter of the current financial year. They sold a net Rs 5,187 crore (Rs 51.87 billion) worth of FAR securities in November.

India will join the Bloomberg Index services  Emerging Market Local Currency Government Index starting January 31, 2025.

09:06   Delhi Airport to close T2 for 4-6 months in...
Deepak Patel/Business Standard

Delhi airport's Terminal 2 (T2) will be shut from April onwards for about four to six months as its operator, Delhi International Airport Limited, refurbishes it.

'The temporary closure of Terminal 2 is expected to cause minimal disruption to operations, as the newly developed Terminal 1 will absorb the additional load, ensuring continued service to passengers,' the GMR Group-led DIAL stated.

A certain part of T1 was reopened in August last year, about two months after it was closed because a section of its roof had collapsed amid heavy rains, killing one person and injuring several others.

The refurbishment work at T2 is set to commence in the new financial year (2025-26) and is expected to be completed in the second quarter of the financial year.

'T2 will undergo a temporary shutdown for approximately four to six months to complete these improvements,' it mentioned.

Under the refurbishment plan, DIAL will procure six passenger boarding bridges for the terminal.

There will be multiple mechanical and electrical improvements, and a new high-resolution flight information display system will be deployed.

DIAL will also refurbish the airside and apron area of the terminal.

00:02   Chhatrapati Shivaji statue collapse: Sculptor gets bail
The Bombay high court on Friday granted bail to Jaydeep Apte, the sculptor who made the 28-feet statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in Malvan that collapsed in August last year.

A single bench of Justice N R Borkar granted Apte bail on a personal bond of Rs 25,000.

Apte, in his plea filed through advocate Ganesh Sovani, had sought bail claiming that the statue fell because of gusty winds.

The statue, which was inaugurated on December 4, 2023 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Rajkot Fort in Malvan, collapsed on August 26 last year. It was erected on a 12-feet pedestal at a cost of Rs2.44 crore.

Advocate Sovani submitted that no one was injured in the incident and that further custody of Apte was not warranted.

An FIR was lodged on the complaint of state Public Works Department (PWD) personnel under various sections of Bharatiya Nyaya Samhita and Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act.

Apte, proprietor of M/s Artistry, said he made the bronze statue on the basis of the work order issued on September 8, 2023 by the Naval Dockyard.

His plea contended that the Naval Dockyard authority never complained of any artistic deficiency or shortcomings.

His plea pointed out that the FIR was registered within nine hours of the incident on the complaint of PWD personnel who have no technical expertise in metallurgy.

Sovani also told court co-accused Chetan Patil was granted bail in November last year.  -- PTI

00:00   Modi to visit France in February
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will embark on a state visit to France and then participate in the AI Summit to be held in Paris in February, President Emmanuel Macron has said.

"France will be hosting on February 11 and 12 the AI Summit, a summit for action, which will enable us to have a discussion on artificial intelligence," Macron said.

"Prime Minister Modi will be there immediately after the state visit to our country. This (the AI Summit) will enable us to have a dialogue with all the powers, IEA, US, China and major nations such as .... India which has a role to play as well as the Gulf States," he said.

Even though Macron said February 11 and 12, the 'AI Action Summit' is to be held on February 10 and 11.

French was addressing a gathering of French Ambassadors earlier this week. He presented his foreign policy for 2025 and spoke on a number of topics, including its equation with the US post-Trump win, according to his speech livestreamed on France24.

Modi's last meeting with Macron was on November 18 on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It was the third meeting between the two leaders in 2024, after President Macron's visit to India as the Chief Guest for the Republic Day celebrations in January and their meeting on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Italy in June, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) had said then.

During the November 2024 meeting, the two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to advance the India-France Strategic Partnership as well as their shared vision for bilateral cooperation and international partnership, outlined in the Horizon 2047 roadmap and other bilateral declarations.

They commended the progress achieved in bilateral cooperation, including in strategic areas such as defense, space and civil nuclear energy, and committed to accelerating it further with a view to reinforcing their shared commitment to strategic autonomy, the MEA said.

"The two leaders commended the strengthening of trade, investment, and technology ties, including in the areas of digital technology and Artificial Intelligence, as well as India France partnership on Digital Public Infrastructure," the MEA said, adding, "In this context, Prime Minister welcomed the initiative of President Macron to organise the forthcoming AI Action Summit in France."

EuroNews.com said last week that the AI Action Summit in France comes after the United Kingdom and South Korea hosted the first events on AI, gathering heads of state, international organisations as well as businesses.

"France's AI Action Summit, to be held on 10 and 11 February, aims to present Europe as the 'leading AI continent'," Euronews said, quoting the minutes of the bloc's telecom attaches seen by it.  -- PTI
