18:41   Ola's Bhavish Agarwal, comedian Kunal Kamra spar on X
A war of words broke out between Ola founder Bhavish Agarwal and stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra on Sunday on social media platform X over the after sales and service quality of the company's electric scooters.

It started when Kamra responded to a post on X by Agarwal, who posted a photo of Ola's gigafactory, by putting a picture of several Ola Electric scooters parked together seemingly waiting for servicing.

'Do Indian consumers have a voice? Do they deserve this? Two wheelers are many daily wage workers lifeline ...,' Kamra wrote along with the photo.

He tagged Union Road Transport and Highways minister Nitin Gadkari, asking: 'Is this how Indians will get to using EV's?'

The comedian also tagged the official handle of Department of Consumer Affairs, Government of India @jagograhakjago, seeking an answer saying 'any word?'

Kamra further wrote, 'Anyone who has an issue with OLA electric leave your story below tagging all...'

To this Agarwal responded, 'Since you care so much @kunalkamra88, come and help us out! I'll even pay more than you earned for this paid tweet or from your failed comedy career. Or else sit quiet and let us focus on fixing the issues for the real customers.'

He further said, 'We're expanding service network fast and backlogs will be cleared soon.'

To the 'failed comedy career' remark by Agarwal, Kamra responded by posting a video clip of one of his shows with audience clapping and cheering and called the Ola Electric founder and CMD 'arrogant and substandard'.

In response, Agarwal said, 'Chot lagi? Dard hua? Aaja service center. Bahut kaam Hai. (Did it hurt? Come to service center, there's a lot of work to do). I will pay better than your flop shows pay you."

Kamra then challenged Agarwal to 'give a total refund to anyone who wants to return their OLA EV & who's purchased it in the last four months', saying he doesn't need his money but 'people not being able to get to their workplace need your accountability'.

'Show your customers that you truly care,' Kamra asserted.

Agarwal hit back saying, 'We have enough programs for our customers if they face service delays. If you were a genuine one, you would have known. Again, don't try and back out of this. Come and do some real work rather than armchair criticism.'

Many Ola Electric consumers jumped into the spat and complained about the service quality of the company, asking Agarwal to address their issues.  -- PTI

17:59   Muslim cleric booked under anti-conversion law in UP
Police have registered a case in Ghazipur against a Muslim cleric on charges of molesting a woman and exerting pressure for religious conversion.

Citing the FIR, police sources on Sunday said that a woman from a village in Ballia district has alleged that she had come to Maulvi Shan Ahmed in Mata village with her husband on March 18 this year for 'jhaarh-phoonk' (exorcism).

During the ritual, Ahmed took her to a room and engaged in obscene activities with her. When she protested, Ahmed exerted pressure on her to accept Islam and threatened to kill her and her family if she did not agree to it, the women alleged.

Based on the complaint lodged by the woman on October 4, a case was registered against the 'Maulvi' under sections 295A (insulting a religion), 509 (outraging modesty of a woman) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code and Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act, according to Superintendent of Police Iraj Raja.

He said that the matter is being probed and necessary action will be initiated against the accused.  -- PTI

17:39   Sonam Wangchuk sits on fast at Ladakh Bhawan
Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk on Sunday sat on a fast at the Ladakh Bhawan where he was staying, after the protesters were denied permission to stage the stir for Ladakh's Sixth Schedule status at Jantar Mantar.

Wangchuk, in a brief interaction with media before starting the fast, said they were forced to stage the protest at the Ladakh Bhawan after failing to find any venue for their stir.

Around 18 people, including Wangchuk, sat close to the gate of the Ladakh Bhawan, singing the Hindi version of 'We Shall Overcome', and raised slogans such as 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai', 'Jai Ladakh' and 'Save Ladakh, Save Himalaya'.

On Sunday morning, Wangchuk took to 'X' to say that they have been denied permission to sit on a fast at Jantar Mantar.

'Another rejection, another frustration. Finally this morning we got this rejection letter for the officially designated place for protests,' Wangchuk said.

The climate activist led the 'Delhi Chalo Padayatra', which began in Leh a month ago.

The march was organised by Leh Apex Body, which along with the Kargil Democratic Alliance, has been spearheading an agitation for the last four years seeking statehood for Ladakh, its inclusion in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, a public service commission for Ladakh, and separate Lok Sabha seats for Leh and Kargil districts.

On Saturday, a majority of the protesters returned to Ladakh while the remaining stayed back to join Wangchuk for the fast. -- PTI

17:13   Ex-Jharkhand CM Champai Soren hospitalised
Former Jharkhand Chief Minister Champai Soren was hospitalised following blood sugar-related complications, an official said on Sunday.

He was admitted to the Tata Main Hospital in Jamshedpur around 9 pm on Saturday.

He was admitted to the hospital after his blood sugar dipped and he felt dizzy, a close aide of the former CM said.

Tata Main Hospital GM Dr Sudhir Rai told PTI that Soren's condition was stable and improving.

In a post on X, Soren said there was nothing to worry about him. "Due to health related problems, I will be attending the 'Manjhi Pargana Mahasammelan' organised at veer bhumi Bhognadih today through video conferencing.

According to the doctors, there is nothing to worry about.

"I will soon recover completely and come back among you all," he said.

Soren, 67, joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in August, alleging 'disrespect' and 'humiliation' in the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha.

He was appointed the chief minister on February 2, following Hemant Soren's resignation and subsequent arrest by the Enforcement Directorate in a money laundering case.

He left the post on July 3, clearing the way for Hemant Soren's return to the chair after being granted bail.  -- PTI

16:32   Ramlila actor dies on stage, Delhi minister blames Covid vaccine
A 45-year-old man died after he suffered a heart attack on stage while performing the role of Lord Rama at a Ramlila in Vishwakarma Nagar of Shahdara, police on Sunday said.

According to police, the deceased, identified as Sunil Kaushik, was a property dealer.

Rahul Kaushik, a family member, told PTI that Sunil was one of the founding members of the 'Jai Shri Ramlila' committee, which was established in 1977.

"Uncle had been performing the role of Raja Ram since 1987. He also used to sing," he said.

Sunil was performing Sita's 'swayamvar' scene which required him to break the bow, however, while singing a song, he felt a sudden chest pain and went backstage, where he collapsed, Rahul said.

His wife and son, present there, rushed him to a nearby hospital, where he was put on a ventilator. After one hour, he was declared dead, Rahul said.

Health Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj said the death could be linked with COVID vaccine.

'It is a common discussion that after the COVID-19 vaccine, such cases are continuously appearing in India, where young people are dying of heart attacks while walking,' he said on X in Hindi.

A video of the incident widely circulated on social media showed Sunil performing the scene and then rushing backstage.  -- PTI

15:30   Hindu society must unite for its security: RSS chief
Asserting that India is a Hindu nation, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh chief Mohan Bhagwat has said the Hindu society must unite for its security by eliminating differences in language, caste and regional disputes.

He also underlined that the functioning of the RSS is not mechanical but idea-based.

Addressing a 'Swayamsevak Ekatrikaran' event in Rajasthan's Baran on Saturday evening, Bhagwat said the Hindus consider everyone as their own and embrace everyone.

"We have lived here since ancient times even though the term Hindu came later. Hindus embrace everyone. They live in harmony through continuous dialogue," he said.

The RSS chief stressed the 'Hindu society must unite for its security by eliminating language, caste, and regional differences and disputes'.

He also stressed that discipline in conduct, duty towards the state and dedication to goals are essential qualities.

"A society is not just formed by individuals and their families, but by considering the comprehensive concerns through which one can attain spiritual fulfilment," said Bhagwat.

"The functioning of the RSS is not mechanical but idea based. It is an unparalleled organisation whose values trickle down from the group leaders to the volunteers, their families and to the society at large," he added.

Urging the volunteers to maintain widespread contact within communities, the RSS chief said that efforts should be made to alleviate community deficiencies by empowering the society.

"The focus should be on social harmony, justice, health, education, and self-reliance. The volunteers should always remain active and foster harmony, environmental awareness, indigenous values, and civic consciousness within families, which are the basic components of a society," said Bhagwat.

The RSS chief said India's global reputation and standing is attributed to its strength and the safety of its expatriates is assured only when their nation becomes strong.

A total of 3,827 RSS volunteers attended the event. The event was also attended by senior RSS functionaries Ramesh Agarwal, Jagdish Singh Rana, Ramesh Chand Mehta and Vaidya Radheshyam Garg, among others.   -- PTI

15:06   BJP stoking communal tensions in Goa: Rahul
Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Sunday accused the Bharartiya Janata Party of deliberately stoking communal tensions in Goa and asserted that the ruling party's attempts will not go unchallenged as the people of the state and the whole of India 'see through this divisive agenda'.

In a post on X, Gandhi said Goa's appeal lies in its natural beauty and the warmth and hospitality of its diverse and harmonious people.

'Unfortunately, under BJP rule, this harmony is under attack. The BJP is deliberately stoking communal tensions, with a former RSS leader provoking Christians and Sangh organisations calling for an economic boycott of Muslims,' the former Congress chief said.

Across India, similar actions by the Sangh Parivar continue with impunity, backed by support from the highest levels, he alleged.

'In Goa, the BJP's strategy is clear: divide the people while exploiting ecologically sensitive areas by illegally converting green land and bypassing environmental regulations - an assault on Goa's natural and social heritage,' Gandhi said.

'BJP's attempts will not go unchallenged. The people of Goa and the whole of India see through this divisive agenda and are standing united,' he said.  -- PTI

14:14   HC to hear Umar Khalid's bail plea tomorrow
The Delhi high court will on Monday hear the bail plea of former Jawaharlal Nehru University student Umar Khalid in a Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act case related to the alleged larger conspiracy behind the communal riots here in February 2020.

The bail pleas by other co-accused in the case -- student activist Sharjeel Imam and Gulfisha Fatima, 'United Against Hate' founder Khalid Saifi and others -- are also listed for fresh hearing before a bench of Justices Navin Chawla and Shalinder Kaur.

The cases were earlier before a bench headed by Justice Suresh Kumar Kait but the judge was recently transferred to the Madhya Pradesh high court as its Chief Justice.

Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam and several others have been booked under the anti-terror law UAPA and provisions of the Indian Penal Code for allegedly being the 'masterminds' of the February 2020 riots, which had left 53 people dead and over 700 injured.

The violence had erupted during the protests against the CAA and NRC.

Umar Khalid, who was arrested by the Delhi Police in September 2020, has assailed a trial court order of May 28, which refused to grant him bail in the case.

Notice on his appeal was issued by the high court in July.

The pleas of Imam, Saifi and other accused were filed in 2022 and have been listed before different benches from time to time since then.

Sharjeel Imam, in his appeal filed in 2022, has assailed a trial court order of April 11, 2022 which refused to grant him bail. The police had arrested Imam in the present case on August 25, 2020.

On May 28, the trial court had rejected Umar Khalid's plea seeking regular bail for the second time, saying its previous order dismissing his first bail application had attained finality.

"When the Delhi high court has already dismissed the criminal appeal of the applicant (Khalid) vide order dated October 18, 2022, and thereafter, the applicant approached the Supreme Court and withdrew his petition, the order of this court as passed on March 24, 2022 (on the first bail plea), has attained finality and now, in no stretch of imagination this court can make analysis of the facts of the case as desired by the applicant and consider the relief as prayed by him," the trial court had said.

On October 18, 2022, the high court had upheld the dismissal of the first bail plea and said the city police's allegations against Umar Khalid are prima facie true.

The high court had said that admittedly, the anti-CAA protests 'metamorphosed into violent riots', which 'prima facie seemed to be orchestrated at the conspiratorial meetings' and the statements of the witnesses indicate Khalid's 'active involvement' in the protests.  -- PTI

13:10   Exit poll ki pol khul chuki hai: Anil Vij
After exit polls suggested a strong comeback for Congress in Haryana after a decade, Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Anil Vij from Ambala Cantt downplayed the significance of these projections, stating that the actual situation on the ground is quite different.

"Exit poll ki pol pehle bhi khul chuki hai (Exit polls have been exposed earlier as well). The situation on the ground is different. The vote percentage in Bhupinder Singh Hooda's reduced by 5 per cent. In my constituency, it increased by 3 per cent. This means that the public's support for Congress has decreased. AAP has no support in Haryana," Vij said while speaking to ANI.

"We do not give much importance to exit poll predictions. If there is any talk, it will be on the October 8 when the results will be declared," he said.

Earlier on Saturday, Vij confidently stated that the BJP will form the government in Haryana and hinted at the possibility of becoming the Chief Minister, citing his seniority in the party.

"BJP will form its govt in Haryana. CM will be decided by the party if the party wants me, then our next meeting will be in the Chief Minister's residence. I am the senior most in the party," said Vij.

He further said the people of Ambala would vote for the BJP as the Lotus symbol was equated with peace. -- ANI

12:59   Centre suspends Jani Master's National Award
The National Film Awards Cell of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has suspended the National Film Award to be presented to choreographer Jani Master citing allegations of sexual assault.

The authorities also withdrew the invitation to the choreographer to attend the 70th National Film Awards in New Delhi on Tuesday.

Jani Master, whose real name is Shaik Jani Basha, would have been felicitated at the ceremony for his work on the song 'Megham Karukkatha' from 2022's Tamil movie Thiruchitrambalam.

In the note, dated October 4 (Friday), the National Film Awards Cell said the letter to attend the National Film Awards was extended to the choreographer 'before the allegations of crime under POCSO Act came to light'.

"In view of the seriousness of the allegation and the matter being subjudice, the Competent Authority has decided to suspend the National Film Award of the Best Choreography for the Year 2022 to Shri Shaik Jani Basha for the film Thiruchitrambalam until further orders.

"Hence, the invitation extended to Shri Shaik Jani Basha for the 70th National Film Awards Function to be held at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi on 8.10.24 is hereby withdrawn," read the note, signed by deputy director Indrani Bose.

A court on Thursday granted interim bail to Jani Master after he filed the bail application to attend the National Film Awards.

Last month, a woman, who worked as Jani Master's assistant, in a complaint with the police, alleged that the choreographer had sexually assaulted her in 2020 during a work trip to Mumbai and continued sexual harassment and also threatened her not to disclose it to anyone.

On September 15, the Narsingi Police registered a case against the choreographer under sections 376(2)(n), 506, 323 of Indian Penal Code (related to rape, causing hurt, and other offenses).

On recording her statement, it was disclosed that she was a minor at the time of the alleged offence.

Therefore, a relevant section of the POCSO Act, 2012 was added, police said. Jani Master was apprehended in Goa by the Cyberabad police on September 19 and brought to Hyderabad and produced before a city court which had remanded him to 14-day judicial custody.  -- PTI

12:11   'I'm dark MAGA', Elon Musk quips at Trump rally
Former United States President Donald Trump on Saturday returned for a campaign rally to Pennsylvania town where he survived an assassination attempt this July.

He was joined on stage by head of Tesla and SpaceX who previously backed the Democrats but for this election is endorsing Trump.

Wearing a 'Occupy Mars' shirt and a black 'Make America Great Again' baseball cap, Elon Musk quipped, "As you can see, I'm not just MAGA, I'm dark MAGA," the billionaire entrepreneur said.

'Fight! Fight! Fight!' Musk told the crowd repeating the same words that Trump uttered after a gunman tried to kill the former president at a campaign rally in Butler on July 13 this year.

"President Trump must win to preserve the Constitution," said Musk who is among the major contributors to the Republican Party's presidential campaign.

At Saturday's rally he told the audience that the upcomig November elections were the 'most important election in our lifetime' and that Trump 'must win to preserve democracy in America'.

He further warned about how 'Democrats want to take away your right to vote'.

"The true test of someone's character is how they behave under fire and we had one president who couldn't climb a flight of stairs, and another who was fist-pumping after getting shot," Musk said in a swipe at US President Joe Biden.

Meanwhile, Trump recalled the July assassination attempt saying, "I will never quit. I will never bend. I will never break. I will never yield, not even in the face of death itself."

Trump asked for his supporters to hold a moment of silence marking the minute shots were fired at him at the previous Butler rally.

The gunman, 20-year-old Thomas Crooks, was shot and killed by law enforcement on site.

10:58   Church calls for peace over stir against Goa RSS leader
The Goa church authorities have called for peace and restraint in the coastal state amid protests against former Goa Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh chief Subhash Velingkar for his comments on St Francis Xavier.

The police cane-charged a group of protesters and detained five of them in Margao city of South Goa late Saturday night after they blocked a national highway demanding Velingkar's arrest, an official earlier said.

Protesters have appealed to like-minded people to gather in Margao as well as in Old Goa in North Goa district for an agitation on Sunday.

The sacred relics of St Francis Xavier, the patron saint of Goa, are kept at the Basilica Dom Jesus in Old Goa.

In a statement issued on Saturday evening, the Council for Social Justice and Peace executive secretary Fr Savio Fernandes said the Goan Catholic Community condemns Velingkar's "insulting and derogatory" statements.

The CSJP, which is a wing of the Goa Church, has urged the protesters to exercise restraint for the sake of peace and communal harmony.

"Velingkar's statements deeply hurt the religious sentiments not only of Catholics but also of so many people belonging to other faith communities who also revere the saint for having received numerous favours in their lives after praying to him," it said in the statement. -- PTI

The Haryana assembly elections on Saturday saw a turnout of over 66 per cent, with several exit polls predicting a clear majority for the Congress, which is eyeing a comeback after a decade.
