India 86-4 (19 ovs) vs NZ 235 | Scorecard

India's hopes of taking the crucial first innings lead depend on their young batting trio of Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant and Sarfaraz Khan.

The youngsters are good players of spin but Ajaz Patel could prove to be a handful on the Wankhede pitch offering quite a lot of assistance to the spinners.

Dinesh Karthik in his pitch report says: 'This pitch is quite dry, it is a lot drier than the usual Mumbai pitch. Batting will be tough."

"They have to put pressure on the bowlers by playing their shots but also show solid defence when needed. They have to trust their defence."

India 86-4 (19 ovs) vs NZ 235 | Scorecard

Welcome to the coverage of Day 2 of the third and final Test between India and New Zealand in Mumbai on Saturday.

A late collapse saw India slump to 84/4 in response to New Zealand's first innings total of 235 on the opening day.

New Zealand's Daryl Mitchell and Will Young made half-centuries in energy-sapping conditions before Ravindra Jadeja claimed a five-wicket haul to restrict the visitors.

Shubman Gill was unbeaten on 31 while Rishabh Pant was not out on one at stumps after India had come back into the game with Jadeja claiming 5/65 and Washington Sundar bagging 4/81.

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli continued their horror run with the bat as the senior duo once again failed with the bat.

Rohit was unable to make the most of being dropped early as he was caught in the slips off Matt Henry for 18. Kohli then ran himself out for four while attempting a needless single to hand the advantage back to New Zealand in the final 15 minutes.

Ajaz Patel bowled Yashasvi Jaiswal for 30 after he missed the reverse sweep and trapped nightwatchman Mohammed Siraj lbw for a duck with the next ball.

Mitchell top-scored for the Black Caps with 82 and Young made 71 as the tourists endured oppressive heat and humidity at the Wankhede Stadium to lay a decent foundation in their quest to win the finale and sweep the series.

Young notched his half-century by hitting Washington out of the ground after lunch and looked well set for a maiden ton only to fall against the run of play, edging Jadeja to slip.

After ending the 87-run partnership for the fourth wicket, Jadeja claimed another victim in the same over by castling Tom Blundell for a three-ball duck, but Mitchell steadied the ship with a gutsy knock despite cramps.

Glenn Phillips fell for 17 before tea as Jadeja bowled him out with a straighter ball and the spinner got rid of Ish Sodhi and Matt Henry immediately after the break for his 14th five-wicket haul in Tests.

New Zealand won the opening match in Bengaluru by eight wickets for their first Test victory in India in 36 years, and wrapped up the series in Pune with a 113-run win.

It was New Zealand's maiden series triumph in India going back to 1955 and the they snapped the hosts' home streak of 18 straight series triumphs since a 2-1 loss to England in 2012.
