Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin chipped away at the wickets to give India the upperhand on Day 2 of the third and final Test against New Zealand in Mumbai on Saturday.
On a pitch offering a lot of assistance to the spinners, Jadeja took 4/52, while Ashwin returned to form with figures of 3/63 to reduce New Zealand to 171/9 in 43.3 overs.
The visitors lead by 143 runs with just one wicket in hand.
Will Young was the lone Kiwi batter to offer some resistance as he made 51, while no other batter got above the 30-run mark.
New Zealand were 93/3 at one stage before Jadeja and Ashwin did the damage as the Kiwis lost six wickets for 78 runs.
India will be looking to claim the last wicket and finish off New Zealand's second innings without too many runs added.
They could fancy their chances of chasing down a total around 150.

10 minutes left for stumps as Rohit makes the surprising decision to give Ashwin a break when he was in the middle of a fine spell.
He was worried about the spinners getting hit for boundaries, which was building New Zealand's lead quickly.
Henry misses the flick to be struck on the pads and the same next ball. The third ball is short and this time he is hit on the body going for the pull shot.
Henry clips the pacer through midwicket for one before Ajaz misses out on a full toss trying to flick it through midwicket.
Akash Deep interested in the appeal but the umpire is not as India decide against the review.
Jadeja continues his fine showing with the ball as he cleans up Henry with a superb delivery for 10.

Jadeja continues as Matt Henry hits the first ball uppishly to long-off for a single. The next ball spins sharply and also bounces quite a lot but down the leg side to left-hander Ajaz Patel. Wicketkeeper Pant again is late with the gloves to concede four byes.
Ajaz clips the next ball for a single on the leg side to get off the mark.
Henry has a big swing across the line but is beaten before he makes good connection to launch the next ball straight down the ground for a six.
Ashwin didn't bowl a single carrom ball in the first 25 overs he bowled in the match. In the last four overs, he bowled four carrom balls, out of which two of them resulted in wickets.
Ashwin in a good rhythm. Ajaz is beaten first ball before he leaves the next. He plays and misses third ball going for a big swing over midwicket as Ashwin gets it to turn sharply.
The fourth ball is pitched up and this time Ajaz blocks it right under his eyes.

Ajaz comes forward to defend and looks to have been struck on the pads but there seems to be some bat on it. The bowler and keeper appeal but it is clearly bat first.
Ajaz is given out caught at short leg but he decides to take the review.
The ball has missed the bat and there is nothing on the UltraEdge as the decision is overturned.

Fantastic bowling from Ashwin. The carrom ball turns a long way and bounces as Young, playing for the off-spinner, is done in completely and he is lucky that there was no edge.
There was no edge as the ball went off the trousers which caused the noise.
Young then misses the sweep as Pant gets a glove on it and Sarfaraz at short leg does well to dive and get underneath the ball but the umpire is not interested.
Ashwin rewarded for some fine bowling as Young gets the leading edge and is caught and bowled by the bowler.
Young was struggling to read Ashwin. The carrom ball does the trick as the right-hande rlooking to flick got the leading edge and was caught by Ashwin.
Young walks back after a good knock of 51 on a difficult pitch against a high-quality spin attack.

Ashwin continues as Young lap sweeps the spinner fine on the leg side for two runs. He looks to glance the next ball fine but this time Pant gets his gloves on it but can't hold on to the ball.
Pant's struggles behind the wickets continue. Maybe this was a chance but the wicketkeeper was unable to hold as he flaps at the ball with the gloves.
Young takes a single before Sodhi plays a nice drive through the covers for a four.
Jadeja continues as Young picks a single off the first ball and Sodhi punches the third ball off the backfoot to long-off for one.
Young well forward to block the flighted delivery before the next ball turns away to go past the outside edge.

Ashwin is delighted with that wicket as he not only dismissed the dangerous Phillips but also his second of the match. He has had to work really hard for his wickets despite the pitch offering a lot of assistance.

Sundar is back into the attack as he replaces Jadeja. Young pulls the short ball towards midwicket as Jaiswal swoops in quickly but the bowler is unable to gather the ball and Ashwin the back up puts in the dive but can't get to the ball, to give away another extra run.
Change of ends for Jadeja as he comes into the attack from the end, where he took his five-wicket haul in the first innings.
Ashwin, who took 1/32 in 11 overs, is replaced by Jadeja. He gets some extra bounce to beat Young before taking one to raise the 50-run stand for the fourth wicket with Mitchell.
The move to bring back Jadeja pays off. Mitchell looks to loft the spinner down the ground but ends up miscuing it high and senior pro Ashwin running back from mid-on takes a wonderful catch. He ran side on and kept his eyes on the ball throughout and managed to hold on despite tumbling to the ground.
The Jadeja-Ashwin partnership works wonders for India. Mitchell walks back after scoring 21 as New Zealand lose their fourth wicket.

India will be keen to break this partnership, which is shaping up to be quite threatening for their hopes.
The pitch seems to have eased out in the last 30 minutes and not many deliveries from the spinners are troubling the batters.

In the next over, Mitchell is beaten as he attempts to sweep Jadeja with the ball turning away sharply along with extra bounce.

Conway was unbeaten on 15 and Young on eight as the visitors recovered after the early dismissal of captain Tom Latham.
Earlier, left-arm spinner Ajaz Patel (5/103) grabbed five wickets to help New Zealand dismiss India for 263 as the hosts took a slender 28-run first-innings lead.
Rishabh Pant (60) played a counter-attacking innings and raced to his fifty, while Shubman Gill (90) missed out on a hundred by 10 runs.
New Zealand were guilty of dropping a couple of catches but Ish Sodhi found the breakthrough for the tourists when he trapped Pant leg before in the 38th over.
Pant's wicket slowed India's momentum even as Gill continued to erase the deficit.
Patel, who picked two wickets on the opening day, added to his tally by claiming Gill, Sarfaraz Khan and Ravichandran Ashwin.

Ajaz has single-handedly ensured India don't run away with a sizeable first innings lead, with the spinner claiming 4/22 in eight overs post lunch.
Overall, India have lost four wickets for 42 runs in 15 overs since the lunch interval.
The field is completely spread out for Sundar with nearly eight fielders patrolling the boundary to deny him the boundary.

Despite so many fielders on the boundary, Sundar still manages to still find the gap as he cuts the short ball from Phillip between thirdman and deep point for a four to bring up India's 250.

This is superb batting by Sundar. He drills the wide overpitched delivery from Ajaz in the gap through the covers for a four.
He steers the fourth ball to thirdman with soft hands and wants the second before deciding against risking the run.
Akash Deep very slow to turn back and takes it very casually as he is caught short by a flat throw from Ravindra in the deep.
Sundar is left stranded on 38 as India are bowled out for 263 in 59.4 overs, to take a slender lead of 28 runs.
Ajaz leads the Kiwi players off the field after he took 5/103 in 21.4 overs. He was instrumental in restricting India's charge after lunch.

Welcome to the coverage of Day 2 of the third and final Test between India and New Zealand in Mumbai on Saturday.
A late collapse saw India slump to 84/4 in response to New Zealand's first innings total of 235 on the opening day.
New Zealand's Daryl Mitchell and Will Young made half-centuries in energy-sapping conditions before Ravindra Jadeja claimed a five-wicket haul to restrict the visitors.
Shubman Gill was unbeaten on 31 while Rishabh Pant was not out on one at stumps after India had come back into the game with Jadeja claiming 5/65 and Washington Sundar bagging 4/81.
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli continued their horror run with the bat as the senior duo once again failed with the bat.
Rohit was unable to make the most of being dropped early as he was caught in the slips off Matt Henry for 18. Kohli then ran himself out for four while attempting a needless single to hand the advantage back to New Zealand in the final 15 minutes.
Ajaz Patel bowled Yashasvi Jaiswal for 30 after he missed the reverse sweep and trapped nightwatchman Mohammed Siraj lbw for a duck with the next ball.
Mitchell top-scored for the Black Caps with 82 and Young made 71 as the tourists endured oppressive heat and humidity at the Wankhede Stadium to lay a decent foundation in their quest to win the finale and sweep the series.
Young notched his half-century by hitting Washington out of the ground after lunch and looked well set for a maiden ton only to fall against the run of play, edging Jadeja to slip.
After ending the 87-run partnership for the fourth wicket, Jadeja claimed another victim in the same over by castling Tom Blundell for a three-ball duck, but Mitchell steadied the ship with a gutsy knock despite cramps.
Glenn Phillips fell for 17 before tea as Jadeja bowled him out with a straighter ball and the spinner got rid of Ish Sodhi and Matt Henry immediately after the break for his 14th five-wicket haul in Tests.
New Zealand won the opening match in Bengaluru by eight wickets for their first Test victory in India in 36 years, and wrapped up the series in Pune with a 113-run win.
It was New Zealand's maiden series triumph in India going back to 1955 and the they snapped the hosts' home streak of 18 straight series triumphs since a 2-1 loss to England in 2012.
