Ashwin continues as Young sweeps the first ball straight to the fielder halfway down at backward square leg.

He pushes the next ball into the covers for a single. Ashwin keeping it full and on the stumps as Conway blocks before he glances one down the leg side fine for a four.

Spin from both ends as Jadeja replaces Akash Deep. Young sweeps the first ball for one before Conway uses his feet to hit the spinner to long-on for a single.

Jadeja gets the ball to kick off from length and also turn as Young is beaten. The next ball turns sharply as the right-hander is again beaten on the outside edge trying to defend.

He offers no shot to the last ball as Young is struck on the pads but the confident shout for leg before is turned down. India decide against the review as the ball was not doing enough.

New Zealand go into the tea break on 26/1 in nine overs, trailing India by two runs.

Conway was unbeaten on 15 and Young on eight as the visitors recovered after the early dismissal of captain Tom Latham.

Earlier, left-arm spinner Ajaz Patel (5/103) grabbed five wickets to help New Zealand dismiss India for 263 as the hosts took a slender 28-run first-innings lead.

Rishabh Pant (60) played a counter-attacking innings and raced to his fifty, while Shubman Gill (90) missed out on a hundred by 10 runs.

New Zealand were guilty of dropping a couple of catches but Ish Sodhi found the breakthrough for the tourists when he trapped Pant leg before in the 38th over.

Pant's wicket slowed India's momentum even as Gill continued to erase the deficit.

Patel, who picked two wickets on the opening day, added to his tally by claiming Gill, Sarfaraz Khan and Ravichandran Ashwin.
