Had a baptism of fire into Test cricket against South Africa in 1999 in the 1st Test at The Wanderers - coming to the wicket with England at one for two wickets down and facing Allan Donald on a hat-trick. Lost two more partners as England slumped to 2-4 - but survived to make a composed 33 on his debut.

Named Man of the Match in England's victory in the Fifth Test against South Africa at Centurion in 2000 after scoring a quick-fire 69 and sharing in a fifth wicket partnership of 126 with Alec Stewart.

Played in four Tests in South Africa in 1999/2000 - missing the Third Test at Durban with an injury to his right index finger. Has been sidelined again three times since then: with a broken bone in his hand for five weeks in the summer 2000; a calf strain which kept him out of all three Tests in Pakistan in 2000; and by a knee operation which ruled him out of all five Ashes Tests this summer.

Second his maiden Test hundred this summer against Pakistan at Old Trafford in the 2nd Test - reaching the landmark with a 'six' courtesy of two runs and an additional four overthrows from Wasim Akram.

Hit 76 against West Indies at Headingley in 2000 and was named Man of the Match by Sir Vivian Richards.

Has captained NatWest England Under 19s and led the England 'A' team in South Africa and Zimbabwe in 1998-99.

Also toured India with England 'A' in 1994-95 and Australia in 1996-97.

Nicknamed 'Virgil.'
