England ‘A’ tours to Pakistan and Sri Lanka 91990-91), Bermuda and West Indies 91991-92) and Pakistan* (1995-96). England YC tours to Sri Lanka (1986-87) and Australia (1987-88).

Took over from Alec Stewart as Captain in June 1999. Led England to four successive Test Series wins in 2000/1 for the first time since 1979 with wins over Zimbabwe, West Indies, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

The double triumph in Pakistan and Sri Lanka meant England became only the second touring side to win two series on the sub-continent in the same winter-matching the achievement of Richie Benaud’s Australian side 41 years before

Had his right thumb broken by a Shoaib Akhtar delivery against Pakistan at Lord’s this summer. Returned to the side for the Edgbaston Test against Australia – only to break the little finger of his left hand while batting against Jason Gillespie. Missed two ashes Tests (Lord’s and Trent Bridge) but returned to lead England to victory in the Headingley Test.

Missed the Lord’s Test Match against West Indies in 2000 and England’s first four matches in the NatWEst Series – with a cracked left thumb. Broke a finger in his second match in charge against New Zealand at Lord’s in 1999 and missed the Third Test at Old Trafford as a result.

Scored his ninth Test hundred in England’s win over Sri Lanka in Kandy last winter.

England’s most successful batsman in the Test series in South Africa in 1999-2000 scoring 370 runs at an average of over 60 – including a marathon ten and a half hour 146 not out at Durban

Cricket Writers’ Club Young Cricketer of the Year 1989.

Scored 207 v Australia at Edgbaston in 1997 – the seventh England player to score a double hundred in Ashes Tests and his first double century.

Shares England fourth wicket Ashes partnership record with Graham Thorpe – 288 at Edgbaston in 1997, beating Eddie Paynter and Wally Hammond’s 222 at Lord’s in 1938.
