England 'A' to: Australia (1992-93), West Indies (1991-92), Pakistan and Sri Lanka (1990-91) Zimbabwe (1989-90)

Broke a bone in his right hand facing Brett Lee in the 2nd Ashes Test at Lord's and missed the rest of the Ashes series. A calf injury also kept him out of the NatWest Series which preceded the Ashes contest.

Equalled his highest Test score (138) - in making his 9th Test hundred against Pakistan at Old Trafford this summer.

Topped England's batting averages with 269 runs at 67.25 in Sri Lanka last winter and was unbeaten in both innings in the series decider in Colombo where he made 113 not out.

Led England in the ODI Series in Sri Lanka last winter after Nasser Hussain flew home early with a groin injury.

Hit an unbeaten 64 in failing light to secure a dramatic series win for England in Karachi against Pakistan last winter.

Scored an unbeaten century on his Test debut against Australia at Trent Bridge in 1993.

England's Player of the Series and leading run-scorer in the 1997 Ashes campaign with 453 runs at an average of 50.33.

Shared in a record England v West Indies sixth wicket partnership (205) with Mark Ramprakash at Bridgetown 1997-98.
