MARK BUTCHER - Surrey

Born 23 August 1972, Croydon
LHB, RM 5’11” 13st

County debut 1991 (in Refuge Assurance League match against Glamorgan with his father Alan in the opposition). Cap 1996, Test debut 1997.

Senior tours: West Indies (1997-98), Australia (1998-99), South Africa (1999-2000).

England ‘A’ to Australia (1996-97), England YC to New Zealand 91990-91).

Topped England ‘A’s first class averages in Australia with 264 runs @52.8.

Made his maiden Test century (116) v South Africa at Headingley in 1998, winning the man-of-the match award. Also made 116 in the 1st Test against Australia at Brisbane in 1998-99.

Took over as captain for the Old Trafford Test match against New Zealand in 1999 when Nasser Hussain was out injured with a broken finger.

Comes from a cricketing family. His father Alan played for Surrey, Glamorgan and England, uncle Ian played for Gloucestersire and Leicestershire, and brother Gary is also with Surrey.

Recalled to the Test squad for this summer’s Ashes series, he topped England’s batting averages with 456 runs at an average of 50.66.

Made a Test-best 173 not out to lead England to a famous victory in the 4th Test at Headingley.

Bowls medium-pace and took a Test-best 4-42 against Australia at Edgbaston in the 1st Ashes Test this summer.
