Returned five wicket hauls in two successive Tests against West Indies in 2000 at Headingley and The Foster's Oval. Bowled Brian Lara first-ball in the match at The Oval in a Test-best return of 5-32.
A deceptively quick bowler who can generate 90 mph deliveries from a short run-up, he is also prized for his ability to reverse swing the old ball.
Missed five weeks of cricket in the early part of 2000 after suffering a blackout while on a shopping trip in his native Scarborough. Returned to action in June with a devastating display of bowling for Yorkshire against Kent in the Norwich Union NCL - taking his first ever hat-trick in the competition.
A hard-hitting batsman, he recorded a career best 186 opening the batting for Yorkshire in this summer's Roses Match against Lancashire at Old Trafford.
Awarded a central contract after impressing during the ODI series in South Africa and Zimbabwe in 2000 following his call-up as a replacement for the injured Andrew Flintoff.
Was also called up as a replacement for the injured Ronnie Irani on England's tour of Zimbabwe and New Zealand in 1996-97.
Is a keen motorcyclist.
