Skipper Shubman Gill made an unbeaten fifty and resisted England bowlers in the company of KL Rahul to take India to 86 for two at tea on Day 4 of the fourth Test in Manchester on Saturday.
India were tottering at 1 for two at lunch, but Gill (52) and Rahul (30) added 85 runs for the third wicket in the post-lunch session to keep India afloat.
India scored 85 runs without losing a wicket in the 2nd session.
The visitors still trail by 225 runs.
Earlier, England piled 669 runs in their first innings, riding on hundreds by Joe Root and captain Ben Stokes, to take a huge 311 runs lead.
Root in the attack now and Gill starts with a dot.

Gill then plays it to the leg side for a dot.
Dawson then gets one to turn and again and Gill is happy to leave. Just one comes off it.
Carse continues and Rahul tucks it to mid-wicket for a single.
A dot later, Gill is hit on the pads, a muffled appeal, no says the umpire. Stokes takes the review and burns it as the ball tracking shows wickets missing.
Two more dots as Gill is watchful.
Gill then defends it to covers for a dot as Carse targets his pads and just a single comes off the over.
Dawson continues and Gill has defended the first five balls and the last ball too and that is a maiden by Dawson as he keeps his lengths fuller.
Carse is back in the attack and he bowls a full outswinger and Rahul is beaten on the outside edge.
Rahul then lets the next one go and that is again bowled in the channel.
The next one is bowled on the leg side and Rahul misses the pull.
