The Pune police believe that the fake major, Irshadur Rehman, 25, who hails from a well-to-do family in Bhagalpur, Bihar, and Bombay-based Mohammed Yusuf Yakub Sipra, 36, who posed as his personal assistant, are part of an international espionage ring.
Justice A S Anand is next chief justice of India
According to a Rashtrapati Bhavan communique, the appointment of Justice Anand would be effective from October 10 when Justice Punchhi will retire after a nearly nine-month stint. Justice Punchhi was appointed chief justice on January 18. Justice Anand would hold office for the next three years as his retirement is due only on November 1, 2001.
HC orders public auction to right Satish Sharma's wrongs
The Delhi high court has ordered a public auction by the year-end for selecting distributors to reallocate the 130-odd licences for petrol pumps, standard kerosene outlets and liquid petroleum gas dealers, given out by then Union petroleum minister Captain Satish Sharma from his discretionary quota, that were cancelled by a legal order last year.
Immigration and Naturalisation Service draws flak for torture of detained immigrants

Snow in Spiti
The higher reaches of Himachal Pradesh have experienced the first snowfall of the season while the lower and mid hills had intermittent rain. Reports said the peaks of Keylong, headquarters of Lahaul Spiti district, had snowfall since Sunday, leading to cold wave conditions.
