Pak shells army barracks in Kargil

Forty Indian army personnel escaped unhurt after their barracks were pounded with heavy artillery and mortar shelling by Pakistanis in Kargil sector last evening.

A defence ministry spokesman said three of the barracks were damaged in the shelling. There were no casualties as the army men had vacated the premises immediately after the shelling started.

The Indian troops retaliated and the heavy exchange of shelling continued for about three hours. The army men also fired mortars and artillery, causing extensive damage on the other side.

However, details of the damage suffered by Pakistani forces were not available.

About 60 people had lost their lives due to Pak shelling during the past one year in the sector. The Pakistani shelling had also affected normal movement of vehicular traffic on Srinagar-Leh highway.
