Mahanta sanctions Rs 5 million to Kaziranga

Assam Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta on Saturday said he would release Rs 5 million forthwith for restoration work in the flood-ravaged Kaziranga National Park.

Mahanta, camping at the park to ascertain losses, assured there would be no dearth of funds for conservation and maintenance of the park, home to the threatened one-horned rhinos.

About 544 animals of various species, including 31 rhinos, have died in the devastating floods that swept the famous park.

Officials said nine rhinos were killed by poachers.

The chief minister asked the park officials to prepare an action plan to save animals from the fury of floods. Its implementation should be completed before the onset of monsoon next year, he ordered.

Mahanta is accompanied by Minister of State for Forest Aminul Islam, and Border Areas Relief and Rehabiliation Minister Binod Goala.
