ELECTIONS '98
|
Bihar Congress divided on VananchalThe chinks in the Bihar Congress came to the fore on Tuesday with senior leaders and legislators issuing contradictory statements on the creation of a separate Vananchal state. Jharkhand Region Congress Committee vice-president Radha Krishna Kishore pleaded for supporting the Bihar Reorganisation Bill, 1998, and urged the party high command to withdraw its support to the Rabri Devi government if the Rashtriya Janata Dal, which is ruling the state, did not allow passage of the bill. Talking to newsmen, Kishore announced that he would launch an agitation in south Bihar if the long-cherished demand of the tribals is not fulfilled. At the same time, however, Bihar Congress vice-president and former state assembly speaker Radhanandan Jha was staging a dharna (sit-in strike) in protest against the proposed division of the state.
