Welcome to the coverage of the Indian Premier League 2025 match No. 38 between Mumbai Indias (MI) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Sunday, April 20, 2025.
Both MI and CSK are heading into the El Clasico on the back of exciting wins and they will be keen to keep their winning momentum intact.
CSK began their IPL 2025 campaign with a bang, thrashing MI in Chennai by four wickets. But they have had a horrid time ever since, managing to win only one of their next six matches.
MI and CSK, who have 10 IPL titles between them, are currently placed at the bottom half of the points table.
While the MS Dhoni-led CSK are languishing at the bottom of the table with four points from seven games, Hardik Pandyas MI are seventh with six points from as many games.
MI hold a slight edge in the head-to-head rivalry with 20 wins while CSK have come out on top 18 times.
It was CSK who emerged victorious by 4 wickets in their last outing.
The batting of both MI and CSK have been inconsistent so far this season.
Rahul Tripathi has been the weakest link in Chennais batting line-up, scoring only 55 runs from 5 matches, and if the team management thinks enough is enough, big-hitter Vansh Bedi or all-rounder Ramakrishna Ghosh might get a look in.
It would not be surprising if CSK hand a debut to the 17-year-old Ayush Mhatre, who was signed to replace the injured skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad, or the 21-year-old Dewald Brevis, the replacement for the injured Gurjapneet Singh.
For CSK, Rachin Ravindra, who scored an unbeaten 65 off 45 deliveries when these two teams met earlier this season, has been their best batter in IPL 2025. Shivam Dube and Vijay Shankar have also show with the bat, but sporadically.
CSKs bowling has been consistent. Matheesha Pathirana and Khaleel Ahmed have taken 18 wickets together while Afghan spinner Noor Ahmad has 12 scalps to be their leading wicket-taker. On the two-paced Wankhede wicket, he could be a decisive factor.
As far as MI is concerned, apart from Rohit Sharma, who is going through a lean patch, their top order has started scoring runs.
The middle order, consisting of Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, and Naman Dhir, has also made some crucial runs in their last two matches.
Their we-rounded bowling attack, led by Jasprit Bumrah, Trent Boult, and Mitchell Santner, has been exceptionally effective, as was seen in their last game against Sunrisers Hyderabad.
The average first innings score at the Wankhede is 178.
