Asian Games Updates: Boxing: Priya settles for bronze after losing semis

India continued their sensational showing in archery  at Asian Games on Wednesday, as Sahil Jadhav and Chikitha Taniparthi won the gold medal in the compound mixed team event after beating South Korea in a shoot-off in the final. 

The Indian team comprising of Sahil Jadhav and Chikitha Taniparthi edged South Korea's Jungyoon Park and Yonghee Choi in a thrilling shoot-off in the final.

The Indian duo also secured their qualification for the compound mixed team for the LA 2028 Olympic Games.

This is the second successive gold medal for Chikitha Taniparthi. This is also the second medal gold in a row for the Indian archery team after they had triumphed in the Indian women's compound team event.

The Indian team comprising Jyothi Surekha Vennam, Chikitha Taniparthi, Prithika Pradeep registered a convincing 234-228 victory against China to successfully defend the gold medal won at the previous edition of the Games in 2023.

India's Greco Roman wrestler Sunil Kumar was left to fight for a bronze medal after losing his men's 87kg semi-finals by technical superiority to Japan's Taizo Yoshida at the Asian Games on Wednesday.

Sunil, the bronze medal winner at Hangzhou Asian Games in 2023, began with a confident technical superiority win over Tajikistan's Muhammad Sultonzoda but was no match to the Japanese World Championship bronze medallist.

Against Sultonzoda, the Indian finished the job in a jiffy after his rival was put on a 'par terre' position for being defensive. Sunil made full use of the advantageous ground position to employ consecutive gut wrench moves.

In the last-four bout, Yoshida led 6-0 after the first period and added five more points to move to the gold medal match, not giving a single scoring opportunity to Sunil.

The Indian will now fight it out with Philippines' Roberts Callum Johnston in the bronze play-off.

India continued their good form in archery as the mixed compound archery team advanced to the gold-medal match after beating Thailand in the semi-finals at Asian Games. 

The Indian team comprising of Sahil Jadhav and Chikitha Taniparthi outclassed Thailand's duo of Peerawat Rattanapongkiat and Kanoknapus Kaewchomphu 156-155 in the last four clash.

In the gold medal match, they will take on South Korea's Jungyoon Park and Yonghee Choi after they defeat China 230-229 in the semis.

The Indian women's squash team outclassed Singapore 2-0 to advance to the semi-finals and assure itself of a medal at the Asian Games.

India sealed the tie comfortably as Tanvi Khanna and Anahat Singh won the first two singles matches.

Tanvi Khanna got India off to a winning start by defeating Wai Iynn Au Yeong 3-1 in a hard-fought contest. Tanvi won the match 11-6, 5-11, 15-13, 11-1, recovering strongly after dropping the second game.

Anahat Singh then sealed India's victory with a dominant 3-0 win over Wai Yhann Au Yeong. She comfortably took the match 11-7, 11-3, 11-4 to help India progress to the semi-finals.

The Indian team comprising Jyothi Surekha Vennam, Chikitha Taniparthi, Prithika Pradeep registered a convincing 234-228 victory against China to successfully defend the gold medal won at the previous edition of the Games in 2023.

The Indian trio also equalled the World record enroute to winning the gold medal.

Indian women's compound archery team progressed to the gold-medal match after beating Korea in the semi-finals at Asian Games on Wednesday.

The Indian team comprising Jyothi Surekha Vennam, Chikitha Taniparthi, Prithika Pradeep defeated South Korea 234-233 to set up a final clash with China at Okazaki Chuo Sogo Park here.

The Korean team comprised Park Jungyoon, Park Yerin and Kang Yeonseo.

The Indian women's compound team had won the gold medal at the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou.
