Out-of-form skipper Riyan Parag faces mounting pressure to deliver as Rajasthan Royals take on a red-hot Punjab Kings in their IPL clash in Mullanpur on Tuesday.
Under the leadership of Shreyas Iyer and guidance of Ricky Ponting, Punjab Kings have transformed into one of the most consistent sides this season. Calm under pressure, Iyer is fast building a reputation as a chase specialist--drawing comparisons with Virat Kohli.
Their campaign has been near flawless: six wins in seven games, powered by fearless batting and a well-rounded team effort. They've already defended a record low total this season and chased down a staggering 265 in Delhi with ease.
Openers Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh have been explosive, including a 116-run powerplay blitz that set up a historic chase. Even when bowlers were taken apart on batting-friendly tracks, the team's overall balance has stood out.
In contrast, Rajasthan Royals have lost momentum after a strong start. Despite flashes of brilliance from youngster Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, consistency has eluded them.
Parag's struggles with the bat--just 88 runs in eight innings at a strike rate of 112.82--have only added to the team's woes. Their fielding lapses and inability to defend big totals, including conceding a 229 chase to Sunrisers Hyderabad, have further exposed cracks.
"We don't know how Chandigarh will play --¦ it's a new wicket," Parag said, hoping conditions might offer some relief.
With Punjab Kings firing on all cylinders and thriving in chases, Rajasthan Royals may prefer to bowl first--but unless Parag leads from the front, stopping this in-form Punjab unit looks like a tall order.
