India breach Edgbaston fortress, level series

Eng 271-10 (68.1 Ovs) & 407 vs India 587 & 427 decl | Scorecard

Shubman Gill, Mohammed Siraj, and Rishabh Pant - heroes of the Gabba - have done it again, this time scripting India's first-ever Test win at Edgbaston.

But it was Akash Deep who stole the show, claiming his maiden Test five-for and finishing with 10 wickets in the match on a placid fourth-innings track. Gill, captaining only his second Test, delivered a commanding statement: a double century in the first innings, 161 in the second.

Pant chipped in with a game-turning fifty, Jadeja scored twin half-centuries, and Siraj tore through England with a six-for to set it all up. Akash Deep then sealed it with pace, precision, and heart.

Even with rain wiping out over an hour on the final day, India stormed through the seven wickets they needed - wrapping up a dominant 336-run win with time to spare. They've buried the ghosts of Headingley. The fortress at Edgbaston has fallen. The series is alive and roaring at 1-1.

Akash Deep continues. Carse chops one behind point but can't beat the fielder. He then gets an underedge as he looks to pull, the ball rolling to square leg. This time, he connects well - a strong pull shot races away for four. Carse then clips one to deep fine leg, but they decide against the single. A short and wide delivery follows, and Carse throws his bat at it - a thick edge flies over the cordon for another boundary, and to add to it, it's a no-ball. The final ball is bizarre - Carse looks to work a length delivery to the leg side, but misses, and the ball ends up lodged between his legs. A dot ends the over. Nine runs come off it - after 67 overs, England are 269 for 9.

Jadeja continues. Bashir defends with soft hands, showing grit as he hangs in and delays India's charge to victory. But Akash Deep returns - and finishes it in style! Carse looks to push one away, but gets an edge, and Shubman Gill takes a sharp catch. Carse departs for a fighting 38 off 48 balls.

Akash Deep claims his 10th wicket of the match and seals a famous win for India! India win by 336 runs and level the series 1-1.

The Edgbaston fortress has been breached - just like the Gabba, another chapter in India's growing legacy of iconic overseas triumphs.

Akash Deep returns to the attack. Carse shoulders arms to the first delivery, then blocks the next. He tucks one in front of square but they opt not to run. Carse ducks under a well-directed bouncer, but the real drama follows - he mistimes a pull and skies it, but Siraj, tracking back at midwicket, misjudges it and puts it down! Carse survives and picks up three. Bashir then announces himself with a statement shot - launching a huge six down the ground! Seven runs come off the over - after 65 overs, England are 257 for 9.

Jadeja continues. Carse defends the first ball and then tucks one out to wide long-on for a single. Bashir walks into a cauldron - five close-in fielders surround him. India go up for a catch as the ball pops up off pad, and it's given out! Bashir reviews immediately. Replays confirm it came straight off the pad - Ultra-Edge shows no contact with the bat. He survives. Jadeja thuds the pads again as Bashir stays back to fend, then picks up a couple with a push into the leg side. A dot ends the over. Three runs from it - after 66 overs, England are 260 for 9.

England still need 348 runs. India are just one wicket away from a historic victory. Like the Gabba, where Australia's fortress was breached, Edgbaston too looks ready to fall.

Brydon Carse is the new batter. He pushes one to the left of cover but cant beat the infield. Next ball, he tucks it behind square - not off the bat, and it's signalled a leg bye. Then drama! Jamie Smith is given out LBW, but the finger goes up only after a pause. Smith reviews instantly. He was beaten for pace trying to pull, but the ball is clearly clearing the stumps - the decision is overturned. Smith capitalises soon after, slamming a boundary. A dot ball ends the over. Five runs and a wicket from it - after 53 overs, England are 204 for 7.

India in control, Eng slump to 153/6 at lunch

Eng 153-6 (40.3 Ovs) & 407 vs India 587 & 427 decl | Scorecard

A rain-delayed start couldn't dampen India's intensity.

With Akash Deep leading the charge, the visitors dominated once again and left England in deep trouble. India wasted no time breaking through the overnight pair of Pope and Brook - both undone by Akash Deep's brilliance.

England were left reeling, but Stokes and Smith dug in, showing some resistance through a gritty stand. Stokes battled for 73 deliveries before falling just before lunch, a major blow to England's fading hopes.

Washington Sundar claimed the wicket. Another dominant session for India, and England are down to their final four wickets with the series on the line.

Washington Sundar is brought on for a short spell before lunch. Stokes flicks one to deep fine leg for a single. Smith defends on the front foot, then punches a short ball powerfully through cover-point, but Jadeja dives brilliantly to keep it to just one. Stokes goes back and fends, then sees out the rest of the over. Just two runs off it - England are 153 for 5 after 39 overs.

Jadeja continues to apply pressure. Smith defends every delivery with composure - it's a maiden. After 40 overs, England remain 153 for 5.

Washington continues. Stokes works the first ball to square leg for no run. There's a moment of drama next - Stokes appears to glove one, and Pant is convinced, as is Jaiswal at short leg. But India opt against the review, and replays show no edge.

The next ball, Sundar traps Stokes in front! He's convinced - and so is the umpire. Stokes reviews immediately, but replays confirm the ball struck the pad with the bat well behind. Three reds on ball tracking - it's plumb! Stokes is gone for 33 off 73 balls, and India strike at the stroke of lunch.

A huge blow for the hosts - England are 153 for 6.

Siraj continues. Smith misses his flick and is struck on the pad, but there's no appeal and no run. He defends the next ball solidly, then just about gets his bat down in time to keep one out. The rest of the over is calmly negotiated. It's another maiden from Siraj - building pressure with consistent lines. Jadeja continues from the other end. Stokes keeps the first one out - it's Gill at leg slip and there's some excitement, but the replay confirms it dropped just short. A length ball then turns in sharply and kicks off the surface, beating Stokes outside off. He defends the remaining deliveries. Another maiden - after 34 overs, England remain 123 for 5.

Siraj steams in again. Smith drives off the toe-end to mid-on, then punches a length delivery to cover, where a misfield allows a single. Stokes then unfurls a powerful boundary. Siraj responds with a sharp bouncer that Stokes sways away from. Another cracking boundary follows, this time with authority. Stokes then defends the last two deliveries. Ten runs come off the over - after 35 overs, England are 133 for 5.

Jadeja continues with a slip and short leg in place. Smith is quick to get low and sweeps wide of short fine leg for a boundary. He stays back to block the next, then gently pushes to short midwicket without a run. He picks up a single off the following ball. Stokes leans across and defends into the off side before ending the over with a firm boundary. Nine runs come off it - after 36 overs, England move to 142 for 5.

Mohammed Siraj replaces Prasidh Krishna and comes over the wicket to Ben Stokes - the same batter he dismissed for a golden duck in the first innings, the first in Stokes' Test career. Can he repeat the feat? Stokes is watchful, starting with a front-foot block, then leaving one outside off. Siraj switches to around the wicket. Stokes advances down the pitch and pushes to point but finds no gap. Another solid block follows, and he shoulders arms once more.

It's a disciplined start - a maiden to begin Siraj's new spell. After 29 overs, England remain 110 for 5.

The ball is now tossed to Ravindra Jadeja, replacing Akash Deep. He comes on with a slip and a silly point in place. Smith is solid on the front foot first up, then rocks back and slaps one to deep cover for a single. Stokes sees out the rest of the over with calm defence. After 30 overs, England are 111 for 5.

Siraj continues. Smith backs away just as Siraj runs in, forcing the bowler to pull out of his delivery stride and reload. On resumption, Smith whips one straight to short midwicket. Then, off the inside half of the bat, he tucks one behind square for a single. Stokes drives to cover but finds the fielder, then blocks the next back to Siraj. Finally, Stokes frees his arms and slams a much-needed boundary through the off side. Nine runs off the over - after 31 overs, England are 120 for 5.

Jadeja continues. Smith goes back and punches to midwicket but can't pierce the field. He then places one squarer to pick up a couple. A block follows, then a quick single. Stokes defends the final two balls.

Three runs come off the over - after 32 overs, England are 123 for 5. They still need 485 runs for an improbable victory.

Prasidh has overstepped, with his back foot breaking the return crease. He follows it up with a defensive stroke, then watches the next two deliveries sail past outside off. The over ends with Stokes tucking one towards midwicket for no run. Five runs come off it - after 23 overs, England are 92 for 5.

Smith finishes the over with another boundary, as the ball fizzes away down the leg side. Six runs from the over - England move to 98 for 5 after 24.

Rain returns; covers back on

It's raining again at Edgbaston, and this time the entire square - including the run-ups - has been covered.

Weve only just started losing overs now. A bit more rain is expected, but all forecasts suggest this is the last spell for the day, Harsha Bhogle posted on X

Live visuals showed umpires in conversation with India's head coach Gautam Gambhir, as the rest of the Indian dressing room watches closely.

Both captains had earlier inspected the pitch, but with rain returning, whatever discussions they had are likely irrelevant for now.

The drizzle continues at Edgbaston, but there's no immediate cause for alarm. The ground's excellent drainage system means the pitch should dry up quickly once the rain stops.

No overs will be lost unless the delay stretches beyond an hour - and the good news is, the rain has already eased.

Even better, the forecast looks much improved for the remainder of the day.

Now, it's just a waiting game.

Good afternoon and welcome to the coverage of the second Test final day!

Edgbaston is set for a pulsating finale to this gripping Test match. India need seven wickets. England need 536 runs to win. But before any of that, it's the weather that's had everyone talking.

Rain paid a brief visit to Birmingham in the early hours, but the skies are now lifting, and there's a hint of sunshine breaking through. The teams are warming up, spirits are high.

For now, we're all set for an on-time start. Stay with us - it promises to be quite a day.

Rain strikes again - and with a vengeance. The ground is drenched, players have scattered, and the covers are working overtime.

India need seven wickets, but Mother Nature might just have a say before they get close.

If we lose overs, India's already tricky task becomes even tougher.
