Updates: India breach Edgbaston fortress, level series

Shubman Gill, Mohammed Siraj, and Rishabh Pant - heroes of the Gabba - have done it again, this time scripting India's first-ever Test win at Edgbaston. 

Akash Deep continues. Carse chops one behind point but can't beat the fielder. He then gets an underedge as he looks to pull, the ball rolling to square leg. This time, he connects well - a strong pull shot races away for four. Carse then clips one to deep fine leg, but they decide against the single. A short and wide delivery follows, and Carse throws his bat at it - a thick edge flies over the cordon for another boundary, and to add to it, it's a no-ball. The final ball is bizarre - Carse looks to work a length delivery to the leg side, but misses, and the ball ends up lodged between his legs. A dot ends the over. Nine runs come off it - after 67 overs, England are 269 for 9. 

Akash Deep returns to the attack. Carse shoulders arms to the first delivery, then blocks the next. He tucks one in front of square but they opt not to run. Carse ducks under a well-directed bouncer, but the real drama follows - he mistimes a pull and skies it, but Siraj, tracking back at midwicket, misjudges it and puts it down! Carse survives and picks up three. Bashir then announces himself with a statement shot - launching a huge six down the ground! Seven runs come off the over - after 65 overs, England are 257 for 9. 

Jadeja continues, and Tongue is solid in defence throughout the over. It's a tidy maiden from the left-arm spinner. Mohammed Siraj returns to the attack. Carse gets things going with a crisp boundary, then fends one square on the off side. He drives to mid-off but finds the fielder. Three dot balls follow, with Carse defending the final delivery as well. Four runs come off the over - after 61 overs, England are 242 for 8. 

Prasidh Krishna continues. Carse steers one through point for a single to begin the over. A big appeal follows as Tongue looks to whip it away but misses - the umpire remains unmoved, and the replay confirms a thick inside edge. Tongue then sinks low and lets one go outside off, followed by a back-foot defence towards silly mid-on. He fends at the next delivery and it nearly kisses the edge. A dot ball ends the over - just one run from it. After 57 overs, England are 227 for 8.

Jamie Smith, full of confidence, launches a massive six over deep mid-wicket - what a Test match he's having! But Akash Deep has the final say. He takes the pace off with a clever slower ball, and Smith mistimes it straight to Washington Sundar at long-on.

Akash Deep continues. Carse stays on his toes, bobbing in the crease and defending solidly around off stump. He plays out a maiden with composed technique. After 54 overs, England remain 204 for 7. 

Washington Sundar continues, and Jamie Smith goes big - launching a clean six over mid-on to begin the over in style. He chops the next ball into the off side for no run, followed by another dot. Then comes a fierce boundary, and Smith follows it up with a flat six over long-on - sheer power and intent. He finishes the over with a single. 

Washington Sundar continues. Woakes is watchful, defending the first delivery and patting the next away with soft hands. He sees out the rest of the over with solid defence - a maiden from Washy. 

Jamie Smith and Chris Woakes are back in the middle after lunch, with just three balls remaining in the over. Woakes pushes forward and gets a genuine nick, but it doesn't carry - no run. Two more dot balls follow to complete a wicket maiden. After 41 overs, England are 153 for 6. 

A rain-delayed start couldn't dampen India's intensity. 

Siraj continues. Smith punches one towards cover but can't beat the fielder. He then flicks it past short midwicket for a couple, followed by a single tucked away to deep square leg. Stokes blocks the next delivery back down the pitch, and Siraj swoops in to threaten a direct hit, but Stokes gets his bat down in time. Smith taps one towards mid-off before Stokes pulls fine of deep square leg, thinking of two but settling for one. Four runs come off the over - after 37 overs, England are 146 for 5. 

Siraj continues. Smith misses his flick and is struck on the pad, but there's no appeal and no run. He defends the next ball solidly, then just about gets his bat down in time to keep one out. The rest of the over is calmly negotiated. It's another maiden from Siraj - building pressure with consistent lines. Jadeja continues from the other end. Stokes keeps the first one out - it's Gill at leg slip and there's some excitement, but the replay confirms it dropped just short. A length ball then turns in sharply and kicks off the surface, beating Stokes outside off. He defends the remaining deliveries. Another maiden - after 34 overs, England remain 123 for 5.

Mohammed Siraj replaces Prasidh Krishna and comes over the wicket to Ben Stokes - the same batter he dismissed for a golden duck in the first innings, the first in Stokes' Test career. Can he repeat the feat? Stokes is watchful, starting with a front-foot block, then leaving one outside off. Siraj switches to around the wicket. Stokes advances down the pitch and pushes to point but finds no gap. Another solid block follows, and he shoulders arms once more. 

Akash Deep is on fire! He produces a beauty that zips through the gate and just misses the stumps as Smith plays and misses. The bowler can't believe his luck. Another delivery whizzes past as Smith swings and misses again. He manages to defend the next, but then comes another brute that somehow misses leg stump. A flick follows - uppish and through wide mid-on - but it lands safely, allowing Smith to collect a couple. Just two runs off the over - after 26 overs, England are 102 for 5.

Prasidh Krishna continues. Stokes starts with a solid block, then flicks one stylishly off his toes out to the deep midwicket rope - but wait, it's a no-ball! Prasidh has overstepped, with his back foot breaking the return crease. He follows it up with a defensive stroke, then watches the next two deliveries sail past outside off. The over ends with Stokes tucking one towards midwicket for no run. Five runs come off it - after 23 overs, England are 92 for 5.

Prasidh Krishna to Stokes now. The England skipper comes forward and blocks solidly. Another firm defence into the off side follows, and he safely negotiates the rest of the over. It's a maiden from Prasidh - tight and disciplined. 

Prasidh Krishna continues. Brook offers a solid defence on the leg side, then taps the next one towards square. There's extra bounce on the third delivery - it spits off the surface as Brook shuffles across. He swings at the next but misses. A loose ball follows, and Brook cashes in, cracking the first boundary of the day with a breezy shot behind square. He defends the final delivery. Six runs come off the over - after 19 overs, England are 80 for 3. 

Prasidh Krishna starts the proceedings. Brook steers the first ball into the point region for a single. Pope shoulders arms to the next delivery and solidly defends the rest of the over. 

It's raining again at Edgbaston, and this time the entire square - including the run-ups - has been covered.

The drizzle continues at Edgbaston, but there's no immediate cause for alarm. The ground's excellent drainage system means the pitch should dry up quickly once the rain stops.
