Hello and welcome to the coverage of the IPL match between KKR and GT.
Reigning champions Kolkata Knight Riders are desperate for a batting revival as they take on the in-form Gujarat Titans at Eden Gardens on Monday.
KKR's confidence took a massive hit after a shocking collapse in their previous outing - bowled out for 95 while chasing a modest 112 against Punjab Kings. The meltdown only highlighted the deep-rooted issues plaguing their batting line-up.
In a bid to arrest the slide, KKR have brought back Abhishek Nayar, recently sacked as India's assistant coach, ahead of any official BCCI communication. A former KKR support staff member, Nayar has already begun working with out-of-form batters like vice-captain Venkatesh Iyer and Ramandeep Singh. Iyer, this season's costliest KKR buy at 23.75 crore, has only 121 runs from seven matches. Ramandeep has managed just 29 in six innings.
Andre Russell (34 runs) and Rinku Singh (116 runs) haven't fared much better. Only Ajinkya Rahane (221 runs) and youngster Angkrish Raghuvanshi (170 runs) have shown glimpses of form, while openers Quinton de Kock and Sunil Narine have lacked consistency. Two pitches have been prepared for the match - one with an extra grass layer - as KKR privately express frustration over the lack of a true "home advantage".
But if history is anything to go by, all is not lost. In IPL 2014, KKR suffered a dramatic collapse against Rajasthan Royals before going on a nine-match winning streak to lift the title.
Gujarat Titans, under Shubman Gill, have looked clinical this season with only two losses so far. Their bowling attack has been a standout, led by Prasidh Krishna (14 wickets at 14.35), who's been devastating with his pace and variations. Left-arm spinner R Sai Kishore (11 wickets) is expected to enjoy Eden's variable bounce, while Mohammed Siraj continues to be a reliable option.
With the bat, B Sai Sudharsan (365 runs) is close to seizing the Orange Cap, while Jos Buttler (315 runs, avg 63.00) has anchored the middle-order.
Down the order, Sherfane Rutherford has taken on the role of the finisher with power and composure.
As KKR fight to stay in the playoff race, they face a daunting challenge against a well-oiled GT unit firing on all fronts.
