Punjab opt to bowl; Rohit ruled out

Hardik Pandya is at the centre for the toss, spinning the coin with 'tails' called by Shreyas Iyer.

The coin goes up and it lands on tails.

Punjab Kings have won the toss and will bowl first.

Shreyas Iyer, captain of the Punjab Kings, said his team is happy with their start but stressed the need to stay focused.

'So far so good, we've got a brilliant start. That's all a captain can ask for. Our combination has been splendid. It's easy to get complacent, so we have to stay in the zone,' he said.

He added that the pitch looks dry but could get better for batting with dew, and confirmed PBKS will field an unchanged XI.

Hardik Pandya, captain of the Mumbai Indians, said his side would have bowled first too but is ready to adapt.

'We were looking to bowl first as well, but it's fine. Time to play good cricket and get a win,' he said.

He admitted MI have struggled to control key moments this season.

He also confirmed team changes: Rohit Sharma misses out and will take time to recover, while Mitchell Santner is unwell. Quinton de Kock returns to the XI, and Mayank Rawat is set to make his MI debut.

Pitch report

image

The pitch at the Wankhede Stadium looks like a very good batting surface.

With clear skies and no weather concerns, conditions are set fair for cricket. The short boundaries mean there's little margin for error for bowlers.

There is a light covering of grass, so the fast bowlers might get some help early on with the new ball. But once that initial phase passes, the pitch should settle nicely and the ball is expected to come onto the bat, making stroke play easier.

In simple terms, it looks like a typical Wankhede track--quick outfield, true bounce, and plenty of runs on offer. Teams winning the toss will likely prefer to chase.

Will Rohit Sharma Play?

image

Uncertainty continues over Rohit Sharma's availability for the upcoming Indian Premier League clash between Mumbai Indians and Punjab Kings, even though he was seen going through a light training session in Mumbai on Wednesday.

Rohit had to leave the field during MI's batting innings in the sixth over after feeling discomfort in his hamstring during last Sunday's high-scoring match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the Wankhede Stadium. He was on 19 off 13 balls when he retired hurt. MI eventually went on to lose the game by 18 runs, marking their third straight defeat of the season.

Speaking at the start of MI's training session on Wednesday, a team official said, "The medical team and the coaching staff are assessing him and we will get to know."

With the big match approaching, all eyes are now on Rohit's fitness -- whether he recovers in time, and if not, who Mumbai Indians will turn to in his place.

An important mid-season contest awaits at Wankhede Stadium as the Mumbai Indians take on the Punjab Kings on Thursday evening.

This has been one of the more evenly matched rivalries in the league, with both teams regularly producing close, high-scoring games--especially on Mumbai's quick outfield, where matches can change rapidly.

The Mumbai Indians, led by Hardik Pandya, are looking to find consistency after a slow start and move up the points table. Meanwhile, the Punjab Kings, captained by Shreyas Iyer, have built early momentum and will aim to continue their strong run and hold their position near the top.
