Punjab Kings need 204 to book final berth

image
MI 203-6 (20 Ovs) vs PBKS | Scorecard

Raj Bawa joins at the non-striker's end as Arshdeep takes the ball. Naman Dhir gets off to a strong start, smashing a boundary and following it with a single. Bawa looks to drive and secures two runs. An edge from Dhir lands safely, allowing him to take another single.

Unstoppable, Dhir slams yet another boundary and wraps up the over with a single. Thirteen runs come off the 19th over, taking MI to 193-5.

Omarzai comes on to bowl the final over. Dhir greets him with a crisp boundary. Omarzai then nails a wide yorker, forcing Dhir to squeeze out a shot to mid-on. But the pressure tells- Dhir's shot is caught brilliantly by Stoinis at extra cover!

Dhir departs, disappointed, after a blistering 37 off just 18 balls.

Santner is the new batter, and the over starts with a leg bye. Bawa then squeezes through two crucial runs, bringing up the 200-run milestone for MI!

They manage three runs on the next ball thanks to an excellent stop by Vyshak, but Santner's sharp running forces Bawa to take three runs- an impressive display of running between the wickets.

MI have posted a strong total, and now PBKS need 204 to chase down and reach the final.

Omarzai gets Hardik, MI 5 down

MI 185-5 (18 Ovs) vs PBKS | Scorecard

Prabhsimran comes on as PBKS' impact substitute for Yuzvendra Chahal.

Omarzai bowls, and Hardik welcomes him with a crisp boundary. A well-directed yorker follows, but Hardik can't get his bat on it. Then comes a top-edge off Hardik's bat- Prabhsimran's first moment in the field, but his misjudged catch allows the ball to slip through for four runs.

Next, a short ball angled into Naman Dhir, who effortlessly pulls it behind square. Prabhsimran at deep square leg dives to his right and gets his hands down, but the ball just slips under his fingers and lands safely. Dhir capitalizes with a quick single.

But the breakthrough comes soon after- Omarzai traps Hardik, caught by Josh Inglis! Hardik departs for 15 off 13 balls.

Hardik, Dhir capitalise on Punjab errors

MI 170-4 (17 Ovs) vs PBKS | Scorecard

Vyshak returns to the attack and Hardik along with Naman Dhir keep the scoreboard ticking with singles. But a moment of sloppiness from Punjab in the field gifts Mumbai extra runs - a wild throw evades Shashank Singh at cover and races away for four. 10 runs come off the 16th over as MI move to 156 for 4.

Arshdeep bowls the 17th and Dhir gets a streaky boundary to start - cramped for room and undone by the lack of pace, he manages to pull it away for four. He follows it up with another boundary, this one more convincing. Both batters then rotate strike with singles. Dhir ducks under a sharp bouncer before finishing the over with yet another boundary.

A strong over for MI - 14 runs off it. After 17 overs, Mumbai Indians are 170 for 4.

MI lose SKY, Tilak in quick succession

image
MI 146-4 (15 Ovs) vs PBKS | Scorecard

SKY is gone, but Tilak Varma remains - well set on 44 off 28 and looking to anchor the innings.

Jamieson returns to bowl out his spell and strikes straightaway!

Two quick blows for Punjab Kings! Tilak looks to go big, gets down on one knee to launch it downtown, but skies it instead.

The ball goes high and straight, and with both mid-off and mid-on converging, it's Priyansh Arya who sprints to his right and takes a well-judged catch. Huge moment - Tilak departs for 44, and Mumbai Indians lose their fourth.

Naman Dhir is the new batter and gets off the mark right away with a composed single. He and Hardik Pandya rotate the strike efficiently, dealing in singles for the remainder of the over. Just 4 runs and a crucial wicket came from it.

After 15 overs, Mumbai Indians are 146 for 4.

Chahal outsmarts SKY, ends blistering knock

MI 142-3 (14 Ovs) vs PBKS | Scorecard

Chahal returns for his final over. Tilak eases the first ball down to long-on for a single. Suryakumar Yadav, showing no signs of slowing down, smashes the next delivery for four. He swings and misses at the third, but follows it up with a towering six - he's in full flow and looks pumped.

But Chahal has the last laugh! SKY goes for the sweep, mistimes it off the toe end, and sends it straight to Nehal Wadhera at deep midwicket. A huge breakthrough for Punjab Kings. Suryakumar departs for a well-made 44 off 26 balls.

Skipper Hardik walks in, he defends the last off the over. Time out called.

SKY and Tilak keep scoreboard ticking

MI 131-2 (13 Ovs) vs PBKS | Scorecard

Chahal continues, and Suryakumar Yadav launches him for a massive six! Jamieson sprints to his right and leaps with arms fully extended, but it's just out of reach - six runs to SKY! He sweeps the next delivery to deep midwicket for a single. Tilak follows suit with a single to the same region. The batters rotate strike with a few more singles to keep the scoreboard ticking.

11 runs come off the over. After 12 overs, MI are 123 for 2.

Jamieson returns to the attack. He starts with a wide delivery - SKY reaches for it but can't put it away. The next ball is short, and this time SKY makes no mistake, pulling it emphatically for four. He then attempts his trademark scoop across the stumps but misses completely, the ball thudding into his ribs. A slower bouncer follows, and SKY shapes to pull but wisely lets it go. He finishes the over with a cracking boundary to third man.

Eight runs come off the over. After 13 overs, MI are 131 for 2.
22:54

100 comes up for MI

MI 112-2 (11 Ovs) vs PBKS | Scorecard

Chahal continues, and Suryakumar Yadav greets him with a towering six over long-on. He follows it up with a single. Tilak rotates strike with a flick to the leg side for one. SKY swings and misses but recovers to collect a couple off a short ball. He finishes the over in style, punching a boundary through cover. 14 runs come from the over, and with that, MI cross the 100-run mark. After 10 overs, they are 102 for 2.

Omarzai returns to the attack. Tilak chips the first ball down the ground for a couple and then follows up with a crisp boundary. He swings and misses at the next, then nudges a single. The batters rotate strike with a few more singles to end the over. 10 runs come off it. After 11 overs, MI are 112 for 2.

Tilak finds form after Bairstow's departure

image
MI 88-2 (9 Ovs) vs PBKS | Scorecard

Chahal is into the attack now. Tilak drives to point for a single. Suryakumar Yadav, the new batter, gets off the mark with a single of his own. A tidy, quick over from Chahal - just 3 runs come off it. After 8 overs, MI are 73 for 2.

Vyshak continues from the other end. Tilak greets him with a boundary, driving through the off side. A wide, full delivery follows, and Tilak manages just a single to point, where Jamieson does well to cut it off. Next ball is a beamer - rightly called a no-ball. SKY can only pick up a single off the free hit. Then comes a glorious six from Tilak, effortlessly lofted over long-on. Vyshak responds with a wider delivery that beats him. A dot ball ends the over.

15 runs come off it. After 9 overs, MI are 88 for 2. Time out called.

Vyshak strikes big! Bairstow falls for 38

image
MI 70-2 (7 Ovs) vs PBKS | Scorecard

Vyshak is introduced into the attack and starts with a wide, full delivery that Tilak slashes at but misses. It looked close to being a wide, but it's not given - and MI choose not to review.

Tilak works the next ball into the midwicket region for a couple, then drives one to point for a single. Bairstow follows with a quick single and picks up an extra run after a fumble in the field.

He defends the next ball, but Vyshak has the last word - Bairstow is caught behind by Josh Inglis! A massive breakthrough for Punjab Kings as Vyshak removes the dangerous Bairstow, who falls for 38 off 24.

Bairstow dominates powerplay as MI cruise

image
MI 65-1 (6 Ovs) vs PBKS | Scorecard

Omarzai bowls the final over of the powerplay, and Bairstow starts with a boundary. He follows up with a pull shot for a single to deep mid-wicket. Tilak misses the next ball, which deflects off his pad to the off side. Bairstow, in destructive mode, then launches a massive six into the stands.

A bumper delivery is not called wide, but after Bairstow's protest and an MI review, it is ruled a wide. Another bouncer, pitched around shoulder height, yields a single for Bairstow, and Tilak finishes the over with another single.

Fifteen runs come off the over, leaving MI at 65-1 after six overs.
22:15

50 comes up for MI

MI 50-1 (5 Ovs) vs PBKS | Scorecard

Arshdeep switches ends as Bairstow opens with a slog sweep for a single. A leg-side wide follows, then Tilak nudges a single off a shortish ball at the stumps. Bairstow finds the gap next, smashing a boundary before the batsmen rotate the strike with two quick singles. Bairstow caps off the over with another boundary, adding 13 runs in total.

After 4 overs, MI stand at 43-1.

Jamieson keeps bowling as Tilak nudges a single towards point. Bairstow is beaten on the next ball but manages a couple of runs off the following delivery. He then pulls one to backward point for another single. Tilak adds another single before a wide is called.

The over finishes with a single, bringing 7 runs off it. After 5 overs, MI are 50-1.

Stoinis strikes! Rohit departs early

image
MI 30-1 (3 Ovs) vs PBKS | Scorecard

Jamieson takes the ball from the other end. He gets a hint of away swing first up as Rohit collects a single. Wadhera does well at deep backward square, sprinting to his right to cut off a certain boundary - Bairstow settles for two.

Next ball, Bairstow uses the pace beautifully and smacks it for six! Follows it up with a single.

Rohit goes hard at a fuller one, but it comes off the bottom of the bat and flies over short third. The fielder runs back, gets both hands to it but can't hold on - a tough chance, but should've been taken. Omarzai the culprit. Bairstow is beaten off the final delivery.

11 runs from the over - MI are 15 for 0 after 2.

Stoinis is brought on, and Rohit welcomes him with a boundary. But on the very next ball, caught by Vijaykumar Vyshak at deep square leg! That's in the air and he takes it! Stoinis strikes, with brilliant field placement by Shreyas Iyer making it happen.

Rohit departs for 8 off 7 balls.

Tilak Varma walks in as the new batter.

Tilak chipped through square leg for two runs, then slammed a huge six- though it was called a no-ball, so only a single came off the free hit. Bairstow missed the next ball but took a single to finish the over.

Fifteen runs came off that over. After 3 overs, MI are 30-1.

Rain eases but overs likely to be cut

image

The intensity of the rain has eased, but a few puddles have formed on the outfield.

The groundstaff - along with the super sopper are already at work clearing the surface.

The rain has stopped for now, and efforts are underway to prepare the field for play. It's almost certain that we're heading toward a curtailed game.

Here's the full timeline for the cutoffs:

  • 9:30 PM is the latest a full 20-over match can begin. After that, overs will start getting reduced.

  • 11:56 PM is the latest a 5-over-a-side match can begin.

  • 12:50 AM is the cutoff for a Super Over, if even a 5-over game isn't possible.

  • If no play is possible at all, Punjab Kings will qualify for the final as they finished higher in the points table.

What happens if Qualifier 2 gets washed out?

image

Rain still threatens to disrupt this crucial IPL Qualifier 2 clash, potentially causing delays. If the match is abandoned without a ball bowled, IPL rules state that the team higher on the points table will advance to the final- there is no reserve day for this fixture.

In this case, Punjab Kings, who topped the points table, would progress over fourth-placed Mumbai Indians.

However, the forecast looks mostly favourable, making a complete washout unlikely as the day moves on.

Qualifier 2 hit by heavy rain

image

The drizzle has turned into a full-blown downpour in Ahmedabad. Rain is now lashing the ground as the covers are hurriedly being secured by the groundstaff.

PBKS players, who were watching the situation closely, have backed away along with the fans and support crew.

The scene has quickly emptied out - it's absolutely pouring, and the wait only gets longer.
20:19

Frustration grows as rain returns again

image

And just like that, the rain returns.

Groundsmen scramble as covers are rushed back onto the field. The wait continues.
20:12

Rain clears, Qualifier 2 to start at 8:25 PM

image

The umpires are out for a pitch inspection. Ricky Ponting joins in, testing the surface himself. He points out a slightly damp spot, which is also noted by the fourth umpire.

And we have official confirmation: the match will start at 8:25 PM!
20:05

Rain stops, Arshdeep warms up

image

The rain has stopped, and there's movement on the field. Arshdeep Singh has started stretching, suggesting action may not be far off.
19:34

Rain returns, covers back on immediately

The umpires step onto the field and PBKS begin to take their positions - only for rain to return unexpectedly.

Ground staff rush out just in time to pull the covers back on, forcing another delay before the game can begin.
19:33

Covers start coming off

image
There's a light drizzle, but it doesn't seem to be coming down heavily.

The square and the straight boundary on one side remain covered - more as a precaution.

The good news: the covers are starting to come off.

Pitch report

image

Former Australia captain Michael Clarke described the surface as 'an absolute dream for batters - flat, rock hard, and built for big scores.'

He added that winning the toss means there's no debate: you bat first. With no dew expected and ideal conditions throughout, Clarke believes a total of 200 should be considered par.

'Every batter will be itching to play on a pitch like this,' he said, summing up just how friendly the surface is for batting.

PBKS win toss, opt to bowl vs MI

image
Punjab Kings have won the toss and chosen to bowl first against MI.

PBKS skipper Shreyas Iyer said, 'Well bowl first. Its overcast and the pitch was under covers, so conditions could help early on. Its a fresh game - our focus is to win. The vibe in the camp is excellent. Yuzi comes in.'

MI skipper Hardik Pandya said, 'Wed have bowled too. Its a decent pitch, just need to assess quickly and bat smart. The surface is flatter now, not much in it for bowlers. Weve addressed things from the last game. Recovery was key during the one-day break. Reece replaces Gleeson, whos nursing a niggle.'

Can underdogs PBKS pull off a miracle vs MI?

image
Hello and welcome to the coverage of the Qualifier 2.

A resurgent Mumbai Indians will look to bulldoze their way into a record-extending sixth IPL final when they face a shaken but dangerous Punjab Kings in Qualifier 2 at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad.

For Shreyas Iyer's PBKS, this is a test of grit after a crushing eight-wicket defeat to Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Qualifier 1.

The loss has exposed serious cracks in their bowling unit and left their confidence dented. But the tournament is far from over - and one big fightback could flip the script. Mumbai Indians, on the other hand, have hit full throttle at just the right time. Their clinical takedown of Gujarat Titans in the Eliminator sent a clear message: this team is peaking - and peaking hard. Hardik Pandya's men look every bit the seasoned knockout pros.

Their deep Indian core - Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma - is firing on all cylinders.

Mahela Jayawardene has transformed a team that finished last season as wooden spooners into potential champions again.

For PBKS, the challenge is two-fold: forget the RCB thrashing and fix the bowling. Arshdeep Singh is carrying too much of the load, while the absence of Marco Jansen and Yuzvendra Chahal was brutally exposed on the spicy Mullanpur deck. PBKS scrambled for answers then. On a flat Ahmedabad pitch, they won't get a second chance. Yet, PBKS can draw hope from history '" they beat MI earlier this season, despite Bumrah's brilliance, chasing down a tricky total with ease.

That game showed MI are not invincible. Bumrah, though, remains MI's trump card. His surgical accuracy across 20 overs has suffocated even the best.

The battle between Bumrah and PBKS' young openers Prabhsimran Singh and Priyansh Arya could well decide the match. Rohit Sharma, fresh off a blitz against Gujarat, has found his timing. Add to that Tilak Varma's flair, Bairstow's power, and Gleeson's breakthroughs, and MI look stacked.

For Iyer and Ponting, it's now or never. They must rally their troops, especially with the pressure cooker atmosphere of a knockout.

If PBKS can shrug off their Qualifier 1 failure and deliver a complete performance, they have the firepower to challenge even this ruthless MI machine. But if MI smell weakness early, they will pounce- and Punjab may not recover.
