SL 163-2 (41 ovs) f/o & 290 vs India 503-9 | SCORECARD

This has been a strong reply from Sri Lanka in their second innings. India are forced into the defensive as they have no fielders close in with the field spread around.

Suthar continues as Sooriyabandara slog sweeps for a single to raise the 100-run stand from 156 balls.

Mendis goes for the reverse sweep but fails to connect as Suthar flies it full and quick. Wicketkeeper Pant is struck on the helmet as he has no idea where the ball is.

Sri Lanka are 163/2 in 41 overs with the deficit down to 50 runs.

Sooriyabandara has been instrumental in Sri Lanka's comeback, stroking a solid 69, while Mendis has stroked 54.

Pasindu, Mendis hit 50s as Sri Lanka fight back

SL 162-2 (40 ovs) f/o & 290 vs India 503-9 | SCORECARD

India make a change as pacer Prasidh comes back into the attack. The spinners were being carted around for runs forcing Gill to bring back one of his pacers.

Around an hour left for the tea break and Sri Lanka would like to continue in the same vein but be wary of not losing any more wickets.

Mendis in full flow, picking up the length quite well. Prasidh bowls a half-tracker as Mendis easily despatches it over square leg for a four.

India bring in a couple of fielders in the deep on the leg side with a clear intent of bowling short to Mendis.

Prasidh sends down a bouncer as Mendis ducks under before he guides the pacer to thirdman for one.

Prasidh goes for the yorker as Sooriyabandara manages to clip it on the leg side for a single.

Prasidh being predictable with the short balls. Mendis swivels and pulls the fast bowler high over fine leg for a six to race to his fifty in grand style from 87 balls.

The Sri Lanka vice-captain has delivered with a timely to lead his team's spirited fightback on Day 4.

Pasindu, Mendis take Sri Lanka past 150

SL 150-2 (39 ovs) f/o & 290 vs India 503-9 | SCORECARD

Jadeja back into the attack as replaces Jain. Mendis and Sooriyabandara pick a single each off the first two balls before the former takes another run.

Sri Lanka are 145/2 in 38 overs, with the deficit now down to 68 runs.

This has been a much better batting effort by the Lankans. They have batted positively and not allowed the Indian spinners to settle down.

Suthar fires it quick and straight to Mendis, who clips it on the leg side for a single.

Sooriyabandara uses his feet and lofts Suthar back over his head for a four, giving Siraj at wide mid-on no chance to get to the ball.

That boundary brings up the 150 for Sri Lanka as they rapidly chase down India's first innings lead.

Suthar bowling it in the rough outside the line of leg stump as Sooriyabandara stretches forward to block it.

Pasindu hits fifty as Sri Lanka fight back

SL 142-2 (37 ovs) f/o & 290 vs India 503-9 | SCORECARD

Sooriyabandara has looked restless at times, wanting to dominate the bowlers, but he has been quite assured for most part of his innings.

The right-hander clips the first ball from Suthar off his pads for a single and Mendis takes one on the off-side.

Sooriyabandara uses his feet and looks to hit over the top but the ball turns sharply off the rough and takes the outside edge for a single on the off-side.

Sensible from Mendis to push it on the off-side for a quiet single.

Mendis continues to attack Suthar as he uses his feet to loft the spinner down the ground for a six.

Suthar has struggled with the ball, conceding 48 runs from seven overs as every Sri Lankan batter has targetted him.

Pasindu hits fifty to lead Sri Lanka's fight back

SL 126-2 (34 ovs) f/o & 290 vs India 503-9 | SCORECARD

Suthar comes into the attack, replacing Jadeja with India desperate for a wicket.

Sri Lanka's batters have targetted Suthar in this Test and the trend continues.

Mendis slog sweeps the left-arm spinner high over midwicket for a six.

A huge appeal for caught behind off the last ball as Mendis goes back to defend and is beaten.

Suthar believes there was an outside edge and he was quite confident but the umpire was unmoved and Gill also doesn't take the DRS.

The technology confirms that there was no edge and the ball went off the pads which was outside the line.

Jain starts his new over with a delivery down the leg side as Sooriyabandara glances it fine for a couple of runs.

Jain bowls a beauty, turn and bounce as Mendis pushing forward to defend is beaten all ends up.

Pasindu Sooriyabandara
Pasindu Sooriyabandara

SL 116-2 (32 ovs) f/o & 290 vs India 503-9 | SCORECARD

Mendis gets a big stride out but misses the sweep off Jain. The confident shout for leg before wicket is turned down and Gill decides against the review.

Mendis makes most of a wide half-volley, lofting Jain inside out over the covers for a four.

He has been keen to bat positively and continue scoring runs.

A good call from the umpire for that LWB appeal as the impact was clearly outside the line of off-stump.

Short and wide from Jain as Mendis slaps it past point for two runs as Sri Lanka reach 106/2 in 30 overs.

India miss out on an opportunity to claim a wicket. Sooriyabandara chancing his arm against Jadeja, going for the slog sweep as he miscues it straight.

Siraj, running back from mid-on, is unable to judge the flight of the ball as he runs back and misses out on the catch.

Sooriyabandara steps out and hammers Jadeja inside out over the covers for a four to complete his second successive fifty of the match.

In the next over, Mendis nudges Jain off his pads for three runs to bring the deficit under the 100-run mark.

That also takes the partnership for the third wicket past the 50-run mark.
13:02

Pasindu, Mendis take Sri Lanka past 100

SL 100-2 (29 ovs) f/o & 290 vs India 503-9 | SCORECARD

Jain bowling in the 80-90kmph range sticking to a line just outside the off-stump for left-hander Mendis.

He pushes forward to defend but Jain gets it to turn sharply to go past the outside edge.

However, the next ball is too straight as Mendis clips it off his pads for a single.

Mendis losing patience as he attempts to slog sweep Jadeja but gets it off the inside half for a single towards square leg.

That run brings up Sri Lanka's 100, in the 29th over.

Sri Lanka will need Mendis to apply himself and look to spend time out in the middle. The pitch has not done anything drastic for the spinners and run scoring is not difficult but the shot selection will be crucial.

Sooriyabandara time and again jumping out of his crease against Jadeja. He is keen to keep the scoreboard ticking along.

Jadeja tying one end up and playing on Sooriyabandara's patience.

SL 98-2 (27 ovs) f/o & 290 vs India 503-9 | SCORECARD

Another no-ball from Jain as he oversteps. He is giving it a lot of flight against left-hander Mendis, who has been quite solid with his defence.

But he tries a rash reverse sweep only managing to drag it back on to his pads.

Some sharp turn for Jain as he beats Mendis on the outside edge trying to block off the front foot.

In the next over, Sooriyabandara plays a nicely controlled reverse sweep, hitting Jadeja for a boundary through point.

He has kept the scoreboard moving along, taking a single off the next before Mendis takes one off the fifth ball.

SL 91-2 (25 ovs) f/o & 290 vs India 503-9 | SCORECARD

Saransh Jain from the other end. There is a very light drizzle but not serious enough to stop play at the moment.

Mendis pushes Jain into the off-side for one and Sooriyabandara uses his feet to drive the spinner to long-on for another run.

The off-spinner oversteps to concede another extra run as Mendis easily deals with the rest of the over.

In the next over, Sooriyabandara steps out of his crease too early against Jadeja and has to make a late adjustment to keep the ball out.

The clouds overhead look quite threatening and it has gone quite gloomy.

Sooriyabandara stretches forward to defend as Jadeja gets the ball to turn, getting the edge but the ball flies well wide of Rahul at slip for a four.

The left-hander getting well forward to the flighted deliveries, getting to the pitch to smother the spin.

He gets the edge off the last ball as it goes wide of the slips for a single.

Following on, Sri Lanka go into the lunch break on 83/2 in 22 overs, still trailing India by 130 runs.

Sri Lanka were bowled out early in the morning session before India imposed the follow-on.

Sooriyabandara looked solid as he played some shots to score 35 not out from 52 balls, while Mendis was unbeaten on 10.

Mohammed Siraj had dismissed opener Lahiru Udara for 3 in the fourth over before Jadeja got Mishara leg before wicket for 32.

Jadeja strikes; Mishara out for 32

SL 80-2 (21 ovs) f/o & 290 vs India 503-9 | SCORECARD

Sooriyabandara continues to chance his arms as he pulls Jadeja for a boundary over midwicket. While he has been solid with his defence, he has ensured to attack the spinners with regular sweeps and reverse sweeps to keep the boundaries coming.

Kamindu misses the reverse sweep off Saransh Jain as the ball strikes his shoulder for a bye. Sooriyabandara watchfully keeps out the rest of the over from the off-spinner as Sri Lanka reach 77/2 in 20 overs.

5 minutes left for lunch. Sri Lanka will be hoping the two batters can show some patience and grind out the next over or two.

India will look to attack the two batters with lot of close-in fielders and make them take a chance.

Sensible and alert from Mendis as he pushes Jadeja with soft hands in the huge gap on the off-side. Jadeja slow to get to the ball as Mendis does well to steal the second run.

He cuts the last ball for a single to retain strike.

The right-hander takes one off the next before Kamindu Mendis picks a single to get off the mark.

Jadeja into his act, bowling on the same spot and rushing through his over. He bowls five dots in a row to Mendis, who picks a single off the last ball.

A needless single from the two Sri Lankans as Sooriyabandara manages to make his crease. Mendis tapped Jain on the off-side and called his partner for a risky run.

Sooriyabandara reverse sweeps the off-spinner to deep point for just a single.
11:42

2nd Test: Jadeja strikes; Mishara out for 32

SL 63-2 (15 ovs) f/o & 290 vs India 503-9 | SCORECARD

Jadeja makes the breakthrough with the wicket of Mishara, who is given out leg before wicket for 32 after he misses the sweep.

He got a big stride across and was struck in line but the point of ball hitting the stumps was umpire's call as the decision stays.

Mishara might consider himself unlucky to be given out on the umpire's call as he was looking in full flow.

A big blow for Sri Lanka as they slip to 63/2 in the 15th over, still trailing India by 150 runs.
11:31

2nd Test: Mishara, Pasindu on the attack

11:27

Mishara, Pasindu steady Sri Lanka

SL 48-1 (12 ovs) f/o & 290 vs India 503-9 | SCORECARD

Mishara taking his chances against spinner Suthar. He goes for the reverse sweep but gets the top edge which goes square on the off-side for a four.

The left-hander sweeps the next ball for a single before Sooriyabandra slogs Suthar over midwicket for another four.

One shot too many from the Sri Lankan batters! Sooriyabandara again targets Suthar with the sweep but this time fails to make proper connection.

He hits the ball uppishly as Siraj running to his left at deep square leg and puts in the full length dive as he gets to the ball but fails to hold on.

Siraj seems to have hurt himself as he landed on the ground as the Indian team physio rushes out.

Siraj walks off the field after the injury for further treatment.

Hopefully Sri Lankan team management sent a message out to the middle to ask the two batters to show some discipline.

Off-spinner Saransh Jain comes into the attack. Sooriyabandara looks for the sweep but gets the under-edge before he gets the next off the outside half for a single.

Mishara uses his feet to play a beautiful drive off a flighted delivery from Jain for a four through the covers.

Siraj strikes; SL lose early wicket in 2nd inns

SL 28-1 (9 ovs) f/o & 290 vs India 503-9 | SCORECARD

Sooriyabandara takes the risks as he sweeps Suthar but gets the top edge which falls safely and goes for a four over square leg. That was a calculated gamble but Sri Lanka need to avoid risks atleast for 15-20 hours.

Prasidh takes over from Siraj at the other end. Sooriyabandara takes a single first ball before the India pacer tries a few bouncers at Mishara, who is happy to let them go.

Sooriybandara gets a single off the inside edge to get off the mark and Mishara takes one off the last ball.

Siraj continues from the other end. Mishara pulls the first ball for a single and his partner takes one off the third ball.

Full and too straight from Siraj as Mishara flicks it in the gap at midwicket for a four.

Siraj responds with a fiery bouncer which rises sharply as Mishara looks to fend it away and is lucky that he didn't glove it to the keeper and he ducks under another bouncer last ball.
10:48

2nd Test: Siraj strikes; SL lose early wicket in 2nd inns

SL 5-1 (4 ovs) f/o & 290 vs India 503-9 | SCORECARD

A reckless shot from Mishara as the left-hander looks to hit Prasidh's full delivery out of the park but fails to connect and nearly ends up getting the edge.

The two openers will need to show discipline and patience, and not give their wickets away cheaply.

Mishara clips the next ball for a single to get off the mark and Udara nearly inside edges the last ball back on to the stumps as it hits his pads.

Siraj strikes the early blow for India. Udara takes on the short ball from the fast bowler but he is no position at all, and ends up hitting it straight to Jain at fine leg to be dismissed for 3.

He was not in control of the shot, perhaps too early into the shot.

But this shot was not required under the circumstances with Sri Lanka playing for a draw. Head coach Gary Kirsten will surely have a few words with his opener.

Pasindu Sooriyabandara, who made a fifty in the first innings, walks in at No 3.

10:38

Sri Lanka's openers have their task cut, play out the new ball and look to bat till lunch.

Sonal Dinusha
Sonal Dinusha

Sri Lanka 290-9 (89 ovs) vs India 503-9 | SCORECARD

The field is spread around for Prasidh bowling to Dinusha. He keeps out the first two balls before he is beaten on the outside edge poking at one away from the stumps.

He guides the fourth ball to thirdman but doesn't take the single.

The fifth ball is short and down the leg side as Dinusha misses on the pick up shot. The last ball is a wide yorker as Dinusha misses with wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant easily collecting the ball.

Good bowling by Prasidh to deny Dinusha the single off the last ball which exposes lastman Asitha Fernando to Jain at the other end for the whole over.

Manav Suthar into the attack from the other end as he replaces Jain. He leans forward to defend but gets the inside edge for a single to turn the strike over to Dinusha.

Sri Lanka need 15 more to avoid the follow-on.

Suthar pitching it wide of the off-stump in the rough with four fielders in the deep, making Dinusha take a chance against the turn.

Fernando gets to the pitch to block the flighted delivery from Suthar and he survives the last ball, getting it off the edge going low past the slips.

Kumara walks back after scoring 12 from 58 balls as he finally had enough of defending.

A proud moment for Jain as he registers his first wicket for India.

A poor shot from Kumara as Sri Lanka needed another 16 runs to avoid the follow-on. He could have spent more time at the pitch and allowed Dinusha to attack the bowlers and look for runs.

He took just 147 balls to get to the landmark, having hit eight fours and three sixes.

The left-hander continues his dream run with the bat, having made 100 and 84 in the first Test in Galle.

The next ball from Prasidh bounces a bit extra as Dinusha is struck on the gloves as he looks to defend.

Prasidh bowls a high bouncer which sails comfortably over Dinusha and is ruled a wide. The last ball is another bouncer which he avoids as India manage to deny him the single.
09:54

Sonal Dinusha closes in on century

Sri Lanka 279-8 (85 ovs) vs India 503-9 | SCORECARD

The new ball is just four overs old but India prefer to opener with spinners from both ends.

Saransh Jain starts off from the other end. He strikes first ball with the wicket of Sonal Dinusha who misses the sweep and is given out leg before wicket.

The Sri Lankan batter immediately takes the DRS. The ball has missed the bat and gloves before striking the pads.

The impact is in line but the ball tracker shows that it is bouncing over the stumps as Dinusha gets a lifeline.

Once again Jain denied by the DRS for the second time in the innings.

Dinusha connects with the sweep next ball, lapping it fine for a couple of runs. The left-hander slog sweeps the third ball over midwicket for a six to take his score into the 90s.

Sri Lanka were 265/8 in 83.4 overs at stumps on Day 3, needing another 39 runs to avoid the follow on. They trail India by 238 runs.

The weather is once again expected to have a few rain disruptions.

Left-hander Sonal Dinusha is unbeaten on a superb knock 85 from 137 balls, with six fours and two sixes, to single-handedly keep Sri Lanka afloat.

He has battled hard in the company of No 10 Lahiru Kumara, who has made 8 from 50 balls, as the duo have played out 15.2 overs to score 35 runs.

For India, Prasidh Krishna did well with the ball on Day 3 picking up 3/47. Suthar continued his wicket-ways as he took 3/83 but Sri Lankan batters looked to attack him, especially Dinusha targetting him with sweeps.
