DC skipper Axar Patel said, "We would have bowled as well. But toss is not in our control. There will be dew perhaps in the second innings, but now we are ready to bat first and put up a big score."

Both teams grapple with top-order woes

image
Welcome to the coverage of the Indian Premier League 2025 match No. 32 between Delhi Capitals (DC) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Wednesday, April 16, 2025.

DC have been one of the most impressive teams so far this season, having won four of their first five games. Placed second on the table, the Axar Patel-led side will be hoping to make the most of their home advantage against RR.

RR, on the other hand, currently stand at the 8th position with two wins and four losses.

Both teams lost their previous fixture; DC to Mumbai Indians by 12 runs and RR to Royal Challengers Bengaluru by 9 wickets.

DC are yet to get a reliable opening pair. Jake Fraser-McGurk has scored 46 runs in five matches at a horrible 9.2 rate and a strike rate of 100.

His partner Faf du Plessis is under an injury cloud and it is still not sure whether he will play against RR.

The makeshift opener Abhishek Porel has shown glimpses of his talent, but is yet to get a big score.

The biggest takeaway for DC in the match against MI was the performance of comeback man Karun Nair, who stole the spotlight with a blazing 89 off 40 balls.

RR too face a similar problem. Their top-order consisting of Yashasvi Jaiswal, skipper Sanju Samson, Riyan Parag, and Dhruv Jurel, has been inconsistent. They will be looking to turn the tide by cashing in on the quick outfield and the short boundaries at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.

After a string of poor scores in the first couple of games, Jaiswal is slowly finding his touch. He has notched up two fifties from six matches this season and RR will be pinning their hopes on him to get them off to a flying start against DC.

Nevertheless, Sanju & Co. will have their work cut out against the likes of Mitchell Starc and Kuldeep Yadav. Kuldeep is the leading wicket-taker for DC with 10 wickets from 5 matches.

DC's bowling unit, spearheaded by Jofra Archer and Wanindu Hasaranga, need to be at their best to keep DC's explosive batting line-up.

The two teams have met 29 times in the IPL, with RR holding a slender 15-14 lead in the head-to-head tally. However, DC emerged victorious in the last encounter between them in IPL 2024.
