Kishan, Chahar top buys on Day 1

Ishan Kishan and Deepak Chahar laughed their way to the bank on the opening day of IPL mega-auction on Saturday.

Kishan's Rs 15.25 crore winning bid from Mumbai Indians pipped the Rs 14 crore figure that CSK offered to retain Deepak Chahar at the IPL mega auction in Bengaluru.

Shreyas Iyer bagged a staggering Rs 12.25 crore deal from Kolkata Knight Riders and all-rounder Shardul Thakur made Delhi Capitals break the bank with Rs 10.75 crore.

Young pacer Prasidh Krishna (Rs 10 crore) was paid big by Rajasthan Royals for his timely Man of the Series performance against the West Indies while Washington Sundar, another India regular, also got richer by Rs 8.75 crore.

Nitish Rana, a consistent IPL performer, was retained for Rs 8 crore by his previous franchise KKR, while uncapped Rahul Tripathi, also crossed the million dollar mark at Rs 8.50 crore.

Shahrukh Khan, another formidable domestic T20 finisher but one with a base price of a mere Rs 20 lakh, was bought for a massive 9 crore by Punjab Kings.

Spiun all-rounder Rahul Tewatia was lapped up by Gujarat Titans for a ming-boggling Rs 9 crore. Seniors Shikhar Dhawan (Rs 8.25 crore, Punjab Kings) and Ravichandran Ashwin (Rs 5 crore, Rajasthan Royals) -- also got good deals.

The IPL Auction will resume from 12 noon on Sunday.

All teams can submit a maximum of 20 names from players No 162 to player No 600 for the accelerated auction process tomorrow.

The auctioneer Hugh Edmeades is doing fine now and the IPL auction will resume at 3.30pm IST.

According to reports, the 60-year-old collapsed on stage because of low blood pressure.

"He has been attended to by a doctor. He is doing fine, his blood pressure dropped suddenly and that was the reason for his sudden collapse. We will know more once he has a thorough check-up," a BCCI source told PTI.

The Day 1 of the IPL auction gets underway with auctioneer Hugh Edmeades taking over the proceedings.

The first set of marquee players will feature Ravichandran Ashwin, Trent Boult, Pat Cummins, Quinton de Kock, Shikhar Dhawan, Faf du Plessis, Shreyas Iyer, Kagiso Rabada, Mohammed Shami and David Warner -- all starting with a base price of Rs 2 crore.

As many as 161 players will go under the hammer on the opening day.

Iyer, Thakur set for big deals

The 15th IPL mega auction is likely to be the last of its kind in the cash-rich T20 extravaganza as the BCCI is planning to do away with the concept, as most franchises do not want their stable core to be tinkered with.

Dashing batter Shreyas Iyer and the multi-skilled Shardul Thakur are expected to laugh their way to the bank as two of the costliest buys.

The 10 teams in the league, following the addition of Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Supergiants, will be bidding heavily for the Indian players in a list of 590 cricketers, including 227 overseas candidates up for grabs during the two-day event.

While Iyer could be the highest ever auction buy (in the 20 crore range), the likes of Shardul and Kishan (keeper-batter), with their bouquet of skills, can also fetch anything in the range of Rs 12-15 crore or even upwards if some franchises get into intense bidding wars.

The likes of Deepak Chahar and Yuzvendra Chahal, who can also get anything in the range of $ 2 million (Rs 15 crore) as both of them are proven international performers.

While KL Rahul, at Rs 17 crore, is the player with highest retention price, former Delhi Capitals skipper Iyer might force some of the franchises like Punjab Kings (Rs 72 crore purse), Sunrisers Hyderabad (Rs 68 crore) and Rajasthan Royals (Rs 62 crore) to break the bank.

David Warner is back in form and expect at least three franchises to empty their coffers for the Australian opener who will grab anything between $D 1.5 to 2 million.

Apart from opening the batting, Warner is among the rare overseas captaincy candidates, having guided Sunrisers to the trophy back in 2016 before an ugly fallout last year.

It is expected that Lucknow Supergiants will bid handsomely for Warner while one candidate who can be the highest overseas buy is West Indies' Jason Holder.

His Windies teammates like veteran Dwayne Bravo, along with young bowlers like Odean Smith and Romario Shepherd, are also going to get good deals.

If anyone can match or even beat Holder and Warner for a bigger price tag, it is South African keeper-batter Quinton de kock, who will get multiple bids from franchises.
