Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh chief Mohan Bhagwat on Monday lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a tapasvi, saying he followed a far more stringent religious exercise than he needed to for the Ram temple consecration ceremony.
"We heard that the prime minister followed a stringent religious practice before attending the pran pratishtha on Monday.
He followed a far more stringent exercise than he was asked to. I know him for a long time. He is a tapasvi," Bhagwat said.
Both him and Modi are contemporaries and go back many decades.
They are incidentally of the same age of 73 years.
The prime minister followed an 11-day special religious exercise during which he adhered to a strict regimen, including drinking only coconut water and sleeping on a blanket over the floor.
He also visited a number of temples across several states with links to Lord Ram.
In his brief address, Bhagwat asked, "Modi is doing tap (stringent religious practice) alone but what we will all do", describing the consecration ceremony as a golden day and urging people to do their duties now. -- PTI

22:52 Chinese research ship heading to Maldives: Report
A Chinese research vessel is heading to Maldives, Reuters reported, citing an Indian military official and an independent researcher.
The timing coincides with Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu's recent state visit to China, aimed at strengthening ties.
This development raises concerns in New Delhi, as India has previously viewed the presence of such vessels near its shores, including in Sri Lanka in 2022, as problematic.
These vessels are not military ships officially.
However, it will spark concerns for India and others about the military use of their research.
Relations between India and the Maldives have strained since President Muizzu took office in November, shifting the government's focus towards China and requesting the withdrawal of nearly 80 Indian troops stationed in the Maldives, according to Reuters report.

19:27 What Modi did in Ayodhya apart from consecration
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday visited the Kuber Tila on the Ram temple premises in Ayodhya and offered prayers to Lord Shiva there.
He performed 'jalabhishek' (pouring water on the 'Shiva linga') and also did a 'parikrama' (circumambulation) of the temple.
The ancient Shiv temple located on the Kuber Tila in the Ram Janmabhoomi complex is also being renovated by the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, which is constructing the Ram temple.
The prime minister later unveiled a statue of Jatayu, a mythical bird that was killed by Ravana while trying to save Goddess Sita from the demon king, on the premises of the Ayodhya temple.
Throwing light on Jatayu's integrity, Modi said such a sense of duty is the basis of a capable and divine India.
The main entrance to the Ram temple is situated on the eastern side, which can be approached by ascending 32 stairs through the Singh Dwar. There are a total of five 'mandaps' (halls) in the temple -- Nritya Mandap, Rang Mandap, Sabha Mandap, Prathana Mandap and Kirtan Mandap.
Near the temple is a historic well (Sita koop). In the southwestern part of the temple complex at Kuber Tila, the ancient temple of Lord Shiva has been restored along with the Jatayu statue.
The consecration of the new Ram Lalla idol was led by Modi and watched by lakhs of people on television at their homes and in temples across the country.
The new idol depicts Ram at the age of five and was carved from black stone by Mysuru-based sculptor Arun Yogiraj. It was draped in a yellow dhoti, and adorned with stone-studded jewellery and flowers in shades of red, yellow and purple.
Army helicopters showered flower petals on the newly constructed Janmabhoomi temple as the 'pran pratishtha' ceremony took place -- a seminal occasion in India's political and religious history.

18:55 HC suspends website offering Ram Mandir prasad
The Delhi high court has ordered suspension of the operations of a website 'preying on the public's religious beliefs' and deceiving them by allegedly promoting itself as the official platform for delivery of 'prasad' from the Pran Pratishtha ceremony at the Shri Ram Temple in Ayodhya.
Justice Sanjeev Narula, while dealing with a lawsuit against the website by Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC), observed that the defendant platform was functioning under the name of 'Khadi Organic' which was deceptively similar to the plaintiff, a statutory body established for the promotion and development of textiles and the proprietor of 'Khadi' trademarks, and directed taking down of all deceptive social media posts.
'It appears that Defendants No. 1 and 2 (the individual and company behind the platform) are attempting to monopolise the consecration event by preying on the public's religious beliefs and devotion and deceiving them into transferring money to Defendants No. 1 and 2, using the Plaintiff's goodwill,' the court observed in an interim order passed earlier this month.
'The links to the videos posted by disgruntled consumers annexed with the plaint further indicate that Defendants No. 1 and 2 have falsely obtained money from the members of the public without providing a confirmation receipt or proof of dispatch... (The authority concerned) shall suspend the operation of the domain name/ website 'www.khadiorganic.com' registered by them,' the court added.
The KVIC told the court that the defendant platform was offering various products such as garments, collectibles, food items, home temples, goods required to conduct religious ceremonies such as Gangajal and even seeking financial contributions to facilitate their free prasad initiative.
The court was also told that as per the information hosted on the homepage of the website, members of the public desirous of obtaining the 'Ram Mandir prasad' for free could place their orders by filling a form provided there and paying a charge of Rs 51 in case of Indian customers and $11 for foreign customers.
The plaintiff argued that the defendants have no right to misappropriate its registered 'Khadi' mark and render a false impression that it was affiliated with the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, which is organising the consecration ceremony.
The court opined there was a prima facie case in favour of the plaintiff, and if the ex-parte interim injunction is not granted, it would suffer an irreparable loss.
The court restrained the defendants from using the 'Khadi Organic' mark and issued summons on the lawsuit. -- PTI

"So far, 13 accused persons have been detained. The process of identifying more people who were involved in it with the help of CCTV footage is going on. Anyone trying to disrupt law and order in the state will not be tolerated," Fadnavis added.

18:01 Senthil Balaji's remand extended; he moves HC for bail
A Chennai court on Monday extended the remand of Tamil Nadu Minister V Senthil Balaji, arrested by the ED in a money laundering case, till January 29. Principal Sessions Judge S Alli, before whom the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam leader was produced by the prosecution through video-conferencing from the Central Prison in Chennai, extended his judicial custody.
Meanwhile, Balaji filed a petition before the Madras high court, seeking bail.
The lower court had dismissed his bail plea thrice and the HC once.
Originally, the PSJ had on January 11 posted for Monday the case for framing charges against Balaji.
When the matter came up for hearing on Monday, senior counsel S Prabakaran, appearing for Senthil Balaji informed the court that the minister has filed a petition raising certain legal issues.
Therefore till the disposal of predicate offences, this court cannot frame charges against Balaji. The minister has filed this petition to defer the trial in the case, he added.
After Special public prosecutor N Ramesh sought time to file a counter affidavit, the judge posted to January 29, further hearing of the case.
In his petition, Balaji submitted that the Special Court for trial of criminal offences against MP/MLAs had not even taken cognisance of the alleged predicate/scheduled offence till date.
While this being so, the simultaneous proceedings under PMLA in the present case shall be deferred until the cognisance and framing of charges in the predicate offence, as the Enforcement Directorate has not identified the proceeds of crime and their major evidence were corroborated on the evidences and statements from the predicate offence, he added.
He submitted the origination of the present proceedings under Prevention of Money Laundering Act has commenced from the scheduled offence, as it was the basis of the genesis to the present alleged offence under the Act.
As a principle this court can await the cognisance, post cognisance and other summary of trial in the scheduled offence. The scheduled offence forms a substantial proof of PMLA and therefore, the proceedings under it shall be deferred, he added.
Balaji was arrested in June 2023 by the ED in connection with a money laundering case linked to cash-for-jobs scam when he was the Transport Minister during an earlier All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam regime.
Soon after his arrest, he underwent a bypass surgery at a private hospital.
Later, the ED took him into custody for interrogation and following that he was remanded in judicial custody. His remand was periodically extended by the court.

17:39 Devotee suffers heart attack at Ayodhya event
In a timely medical intervention, a mobile hospital of the Indian Air Force's rapid response team saved a devotee who suffered a heart attack while attending the 'pran pratishtha' event at the Ram temple in Ayodhya on Monday.
After Ramkrishna Srivastava (65) collapsed inside the temple complex, a team of BHISHM Cube led by Wing Commander Manish Gupta evacuated him within a minute of the incident and provided on-site treatment, capitalising on the critical golden hour -- the first hour following a traumatic injury or medical event which is crucial for successful emergency treatment, a statement said.

08:27 Bilkis Bano case: All 11 convicts surrender at Godhra jail
All 11 convicts in the Bilkis Bano case have surrendered at the Godhra sub jail in Gujarat's Panchmahal district in keeping with the deadline set by the Supreme Court.
The 11 convicts surrendered before jail authorities late Sunday night, local Crime Branch inspector NL Desai said.
"They reached the jail before midnight of January 21, which was the deadline set for them to surrender," he said. The top court on January 8 annulled the remission granted by the Gujarat government to the 11 convicts in the high-profile case while slamming the state for being "complicit" with an accused and abusing its discretion.
It ordered the convicts, who were released prematurely on Independence Day in 2022, to go back to jail within two weeks. The apex court on Friday rejected pleas of the convicts for grant of more time to surrender and asked them to do so by Sunday. -- PTI

While more than 7,000 people are on the list of invitees for the event, the select list features 506 A-listers.
Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan, business tycoons Mukesh Ambani and Gautam Adani, and sporting icon Sachin Tendulkar are among the prominent people invited to the event.
Those attending the "Pran Prathishtha" also include people linked to the Ram Janmabhoomi agitation. Almost all opposition leaders invited to the ceremony have declined to be in attendance, with the Congress calling it a "BJP-RSS event".
The consecration ceremony is being held after the first phase of the temple's construction, made possible by a historic Supreme Court judgment in 2019 on the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid title suit. The Hindu litigants argued that the Babri Mosque was constructed at the site of a temple marking the birthplace of Lord Ram. In 1992, the 16th century mosque was demolished by "kar sevaks".

Prime Minister Modi will also visit Kuber Tila, where an ancient Shiv temple has been restored. He will perform a 'pooja' there, the member said. The magnificent Ram Janmbhoomi Mandir or Ram temple has been constructed in the traditional Nagara style.
Its length (east-west) is 380 feet; width 250 feet and height 161 feet. It is supported by a total of 392 pillars and has 44 doors. The consecration rituals for the 'Pran Pratishtha' started from the Saryu river on January 16 and will be completed on Monday afternoon in the 'abhijeet muhurta', according to the trust.
Lakhs of people are expected to watch the event live on TV and online platforms as the central government has announced a half-day off on January 22 and many states followed suit.
