Bad light ends play early on Day 4

Shanto tries the same shot next ball but it goes off the arm and he inside edges the fourth ball for a single.

Shakib plays the conventional sweep this time for one to deep square leg.

Bangladesh are 158/4 in 37 overs at the final drinks break on Day 3.

There are still 10 overs remaining in the day as Siraj comes back for a short burst before stumps.

He starts his new spell with a bouncer which Shakib ducks under and then blocks the next.

It has gone quite dark in Chennai as the umpire calls the players off the field due to bad light.

Bangladesh are 158/4 in 37.2 overs as play is halted because of bad light.

Shanto stroked his way to 51 from 60 balls, while Shakib is on five. They still need another 357 runs for victory.

Ashwin was India's top bowler with 3/63 in 15 overs after going wicketless in the first innings, while Bumrah picked 1/18.

Some dark clouds gathering overhead as the groundstaff get ready with covers.

With the situation not getting any better play has been called off.

In the next over, Shakib uses his feet to Ashwin but can't beat Kohli at mid-off before he clips the fourth ball for one.

Shanto sweeps Ashwin powerfully over square leg for a six to bring up his fifty in grand style, from 55 balls and give the Bangladesh team something to cheer about on a gloomy day.

Ashwin gets the ball to go straight on as Mushfiqur is beaten on the outside edge.

He then slog sweeps the spinner over midwicket for a six but Ashwin has the last laugh as he strikes next ball.

Mushfiqur looks to loft Ashwin over mid-on but fails to get enough elevation and Rahul takes a superb catch diving forward. The TV umpire takes a few looks before deciding that Rahul's fingers were underneath the ball.

Poor batting from Mushfiqur a he throws his wicket away for 13 -- the fifth time he has fallen to Ashwin in Tests.

Instead of looking to spend some time out in the middle, he gives his wicket away with a poor shot.

Shakib Al Hasan also shows intent as he runs down the track to drive Ashwin as Kohli fumbles at mid-off to concede a single.

Bangladesh are 147/4 in 34 overs. 13 overs still remaining for stumps. 

With the pitch now offering a lot more to the spinners, can India still enforce a result on the third day itself?

Shanto continues to play his shots as he reverse sweeps Jadeja for one and Mushfiqur Rahim gets the outside edge past the slip fielder for two runs to get him off the mark.

Mushfiqur plays a reckless sweep shot, hitting it uppishly as Siraj swoops in from deep square leg but is unable to get to the ball as it goes through for a four.

Bangladesh will need senior pro Mushfiqur to play responsibly and build a good partnership with Shanto.

Shanto reading Ashwin quite well as he sweeps the spinner for a couple and clips the third ball again on the leg side for two more.

The left-hander caught in two minds as he initially looks to sweep before bailing out of the shot and defends the full delivery.

Mushfiqur learns from his mistake in Jadeja's previous over as he blocks the spinner before taking one.

Jadeja goes wide as Shanto again brings out the reverse sweep for a four behind square on the off-side.

Bangladesh have scored 84 runs in 20 overs in this session so far, while losing three wickets.

Short and wide from Jadeja as Mominul rocks back to hammer it past point for a boundary.

Ashwin gets his second wicket as Mominul is beaten by the length ball which turns just enough to beat the bat and crash into the stumps. The left-hander was also guilty of playing way inside the line as he makes his way back for 13.

Bangladesh have done well not to let the Indian bowlers tie them down and build the pressure. They have looked to transfer the pressure back with their positive approach.

Spin from both ends as Ravindra Jadeja comes into the attack, to bowl the 27th over. It has gone quite overcast in Chennai.

Mominul defends the first ball before he slog sweeps the next over midwicket for a four forcing the fielder to be pushed back for the next ball.

Mominul looks to defend off the front foot as the ball goes off the pads to short leg, who appeals but in vain.

In the next over, Shanto sweeps Ashwin for a couple of runs behind square before he keeps out the arm ball which is fired quick on the leg side for one.

Mominul looked edgy at the start but is now much more solid with his footwork against spin.

Akash Deep back in place of Bumrah with a spread out field with just one slip and a fielder at wide slip, with another one close in at short cover and short midwicket.

The first ball holds its line as Shanto plays inside the line and is beaten before he defends the next followed by another block.

The left-hander gets the last ball off the outside half past the fielder at gully for a couple of runs.

Mominul is desperate to get off the mark. He is clearly not picking Ashwin as he attempts a rash sweep shot which he misses and and even the keeper is beaten for four byes.

Ashwin then drifts down the leg side as left-hander Mominul glances it fine for a four before he is beaten next ball on the outside edge.

The ball is doing a lot more for Ashwin, with the ball turning on a more regular basis now.

Bangladesh have done well so far but need one of their top order batters to carry on to play a big knock.

Shanto has looked in good touch. He rocks back to pull the short ball from Akash Deep between the two fielders at deep square leg and fine leg for a four.

Bangladesh are 100/2 in 25 overs, with Shanto on 20 and Mominul on four. They need another 415 runs for victory.

India will be looking to claim a few more wickets in the 22 overs remaining on the third day.

Ashwin continues as Shanto paddles the full delivery down the leg side fine for a four followed by another sweep for one.

Ashwin gets his first wicket of the match as Shadman flicks uppishly and is caught by Gill at midwicket to be dismissed for 35.

Both the Bangladesh openers perish in their 30s, not making the good start count and play a big innings on a good batting pitch.

Mominul Haque, the fourth left-hander in a row for Bangladesh at No 4.

He watchfully keeps out the last three balls to end a successful over from Ashwin.

Bumrah makes the breakthrough with the wicket of Zakir for 33, with Yashasvi Jaiswal taking a brilliant catch at gully, The ball was travelling off a thick outside edge as Jaiswal reacted quickly to stick his left hand out and snap a superb one-handed low catch.

Zakir walks back for 33 as Bangladesh lose their first wicket in the 17th over.

Najmul Hossain Shanto misses the flick as he collects a leg bye before Shadman is deceived by the slower ball and then ducks under the bouncer.

Jasprit Bumrah, who bowled three overs with the new ball, back into the attack.

Shadman easily nudges the first ball off his pads for one before Zakir misses the pull and is struck on the body followed by a push on the off-side before he keeps out the last two balls.

Zakir goes after Ashwin as he comes down the track to loft it over mid-on for a four to take Bangladesh past 50, in the 11th over.

Ashwin finally gets one to grip, getting a lot of turn and bounce to beat Shadman, who tried to defend.

That will encourage the Indian spinners as Bangladesh made a confident start, scoring at 4.5 per over.

The two openers are looking much more confident in this innings on a pitch not doing anything so far.

The ball is coming on to the bat nicely against the pacers and they have made most with some sweetly timed boundaries.

Shadman drives Ashwin into the covers for one before Zakir easily keeps out the rest of the over.

Bangladesh are 47 for no loss in 10 overs, with Zakir on 27 and Shadman on 19.

Change in the bowling as Akash Deep replaces Bumrah, who bowled a three-over spell with the new ball.

The first ball is pitched up and swings away to beat left-hander Shadman on the outside edge.

Two balls later, he gets a leading edge trying to flick but short of the fielder at gully.

Shadman rocks back to punch the fourth ball in the gap through the covers for a four and keeps strike with a single from the last ball.

Another change as spinner Ravichandran Ashwin comes into the attack to a huge cheer from his home fans.

Shadman clips the first ball straight to Jaiswal at short leg falling just short before he hits the next uppishly to deep square leg for a single.

Zakir well forward to a full delivery to block before the doosra from Ashwin turns the other way to strike him on the pads but it is going down.

Flighted on the off-stump line as Zakir defends it with a confident forward stride.

Confident start from Shadman as he rocks back to punch the short ball from Siraj in the gap at covers for a four.

He inside edges the fourth ball trying to drive for a couple of runs on the leg side and then collects a leg bye as he misses the flick off an incoming delivery.

Bumrah starts his new over with a back of length ball on the body as Shadman manages to fend it towards fine leg for a single and Zakir takes one off the next.

Shadman cuts the short ball from Bumrah but it is stopped by Jadeja on the bounce at point.

The left-hander plays a nice clips off his pads to deep square leg for two runs.

In the next over, Zakir shows his class he plays a fantastic shot to swing Siraj into the stands over square leg for a six.

A full delivery is then driven straight back for a four with some exquisite timing.

The last ball is in the slot, full and wide, as Zakir plays a blistering drive through the covers for another boundary.

This is a good response by the openers as Bangladesh race to 33 for no loss in six overs, with Zakir hitting 23 from 20 balls, with four fours and a six.

The pitch looking a lot easier against the pacers than it did on the first two days and the Bangladesh openers should look to score some runs.

Bumrah looks to set up Zakir as he bowls a bouncer which the left-hander ducks under followed by a full delivery which he tries to drive but is beaten on the inside edge.

Captain Rohit Sharma calls his batters back as India declare their second innings on 287/4 in 64 overs.

The target for Bangladesh is a huge 515, with 47 overs still remaining left on the third day.

Gill finishes unbeaten on a fine knock of 119 from 176 balls, with 10 fours and four sixes.

Rahul got a nice outing as he stroked a fluent 22 from 19 balls, with four boundaries.

India, who resumed the day on 81/3 dominated the proceedings with brilliant centuries from Pant and Gill as they put on 167 runs for the fourth wicket.

With their bowlers looking in good form, India have a chance to finish off the match on Day 3 itself. 

Interestingly, Bangladesh lasted just 47.1 overs in their first innings when they were bowled out for 149. They will hope to do much better and take the match into the fourth day.

Shakib is back into the attack in place of Mominul. Gill and Rahul take a single each before the former hits the spinner through the covers for two runs to take the lead past 500.

A single to Gill on the off-side before Mahmud puts in a diving stop the save boundary after Rahul had played the cut shot.

A good call by the umpire and Bangladesh skipper as the ball had struck in line but it was doing too much and going down to miss the stumps.

Pant continues to find the boundaries as he sweeps Mehidy behind square on the leg side for a four.

However, the bowler gets revenge as he gets Pant caught and bowled off the next ball.

Pant looks to smash it down the ground but can't get enough elevation and Mehidy takes a sharp catch to his left.

Pant walks back to a standing ovation after a splendid innings of 109 from 128 balls, with 13 fours and four sixes.

He put India in complete control, putting on 167 from 217 balls for the fourth wicket with Gill.

Big relief for Bangladesh as Pant makes his way back. Will they be able to exert some control after that wicket and slow down the scoring rate?

Spinner Shakib from the other end. Pant continues to attack the left-arm spinner as he lofts the first ball straight down the ground for a six to go past Gill as he takes his score to 89.

Pant goes down on his back knee and flicks Shakib over fine leg for a four to race into the 90s.

That boundary also brings up the 150-run stand for the seventh wicket from 199 balls.

He is down the ground looking for another big hit but it goes along the ground to sweeper cover for one.

Before this match, Pant has fallen six times in the 90s but he still won't bat for the century as he continues to go for his shots.

Pant looks keen to jump down the track to Mehidy, who has bowled flat and not allowed him to charge.

This time Pant rocks back to cut the short ball past point for a boundary and then uses his feet to drive the last ball to long-on for one and reach 99.

Shakib continues as Pant defends the first and leaves the next pitched wide of the stumps in the rough.

Pant pushes Shakib wide of long-off for two runs to bring up his sixth Test century from 124 balls.

Both his Test centuries have come in Chennai, while four have come overseas. With six Test centuries, he equals Mahendra Singh Dhoni's record for most hundred by an Indian wicketkeeper.

A memorable comeback from Pant, who suffered a serious car crash in December 2022, which ruled him out of action for year and half months.

He only returned to cricket earlier this year in IPL 2024 before he was included in India's T20 World Cup team.

This was his first Test match in nearly two years, having last played against Bangladesh in December 2022.

Shakib's last ball is down the leg side as Pant paddles it fine for another four.

We are back with the post-lunch session. Pant and Gill, both in their 80s, will be keen to continue their positive approach as they target a Test century before cutting loose to stretch the leads towards 500 and more.

He uses his feet again but only for a single to long-on and Gill calmly pushes the last ball to the same region for another single.

10 runs from the final over of the session as India race to 205/3 in 51 overs, to stretch their lead to 432 runs.

The hosts dominated the morning session, scoring 124 runs in 28 overs. They started off slowly, taking their time in the first hour in which 48 runs came from 15 overs, before cutting loose in the next hour to take charge with 76 coming from the next 13 overs.

Playing his first Test in nearly two years after a long injury lay-off, Pant smashed his way to 82 from 108 balls, with nine fours and three sixes.

Gill continued his superb run in Tests, hitting a solid 86 from 137 balls, with seven fours and three sixes.

The young batters put on an unbroken stand of 138 runs from 190 balls to put India in command.

Pant, on 72, looks to heave Shakib over midwicket but top edges it as the ball skies high on the leg side but Bangladesh captain Shanto puts down an easy chance.

With five minutes left for lunch this would have been a big opportunity for Bangladesh to halt India's charge.

A single each to the two batters off Mahmud as India reach 195/3 in 50 overs, with Gill on 85 and Pant on 73.

India have scored 66 runs from the last 12 overs to take control of the proceedings.

Short and wide from Mahmud as Pant rocks back to cut it past point for a four to take the lead past 400. 

He then pulls the next ball over mid-on for a couple of runs before the slower bouncer sails over high over Pant and is ruled a wide for height.

That was a rare loose shot from Gill, who has been quite solid since morning. 

He will feel much better after pulling the short ball from the pace bowler comfortable into the gap past midwicket for a four.

Pant shuffles across as he sweeps the spinner fine on the leg side for two runs and clips the fifth ball for one.

In Mehidy's next over, Pant clips the spinner for a single to bring up his fifty from 88 balls as India also bring up their 150, with lead inching closer to 400.

The duo take a single each off Taskin to take India's lead past 350.

Pant breaks free after a few tight overs. He charges down the track to loft Mehidy back over his head for a four -- the first boundary after 46 balls.

An overthrow a couple of balls later gives him two runs off the last ball.

Gill has made 57 from 99 balls, while Pant has eased his way to 36 from 66 balls, with the duo putting on 62 runs for the fourth wicket so far.

Pant with a strike rate of 73.4 in 58 Tests boasts of the fourth highest strike rate in Tests since 2000.

Gill continues his good run with the bat in Tests. He has gone past the fifty mark five times in his last eight Tests innings, including two centuries and a ninty.

Welcome to the coverage of Day 3 of the first Test between India and Bangladesh in Chennai on Saturday.

India will be looking for further extend their domination with a good batting performance in the morning to swell their lead on the third day.

India wrested control as they dominated the second day's play on Friday. India spared Bangladesh the ignominy of a follow-on but grabbed an overall lead of 308 with seven wickets in hands to seize control.

A record wickets tumbled on a frenetic day two with India reaching 81/3 at stumps. Shubman Gill was unbeaten on 33 with Rishabh Pant on 12 at the other end.

India posted 376 in their first innings, a remarkable recovery from a precarious 34/3, riding a match-defining seventh wicket partnership of 199 between Ravichandran Ashwin (113) and Ravindra Jadeja (86).

Seamer Jasprit Bumrah then wrecked Bangladesh, who folded for 149 handing India a significant lead of 227 in the bowler-dominated contest.

Bumrah, who struck in the first over of the Bangladesh innings, finished with impressive figures of 4/50, while Mohammed Siraj, Akash Deep and Ravindra Jadeja picked two wickets each.

India wobbled early and lost both openers inside seven overs when they came out to bat for the second time.

Skipper Rohit Sharma edged Taskin Ahmed to the slip, while Yashasvi Jaiswal was caught behind to Nahid Rana playing a loose shot.

Virat Kohli (17) fell lbw to Miraz and opted not to review the decision though replays suggested he had nicked the ball.
