Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived Madrid last night on the second leg of his six-day, four-nation tour aimed at boosting bilateral economic engagement.

Modi's visit to Spain is the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister since 1988.

Modi will hold discussions with Spanish PM Mariano Rajoy on ways to deepen bilateral engagement, including in the high-tech sector. Modi will also call on King Felipe VI of Spain.

This afternoon, Modi met Rajoy at La Moncloa Palace. In a short press statement, the PM said, "We are in favour of making ties with Spain even more productive in the coming years. I am sure the discussions with PM Mariano Rajoy will lead to enhancement of India-Spain bilateral ties. India and Spain can cooperate in so many areas, including infrastructure. We must have even closer economic ties. Terrorism is a challenge for all of our societies, we get to hear a lot about terror attacks these days."
