Mahendra Singh Dhoni becomes the oldest uncapped player to be retained in the IPL.

Dhoni was retained by CSK for Rs 4 crore as an uncapped player after the rules were changed earlier this year, according to which if a player has retired from international cricket for five years then he can be retained as an uncapped player.

Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad is the top retention for CSK at Rs 18 crore the same as all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, while SL pacer Matheesha Pathirana was retained for Rs 13 crore.

All-rounder Shivam Dube stayed back for Rs 12 crore as CSK retained as many as five players.

Rohit is retained at Rs 16.30 crore, while Tilak Varma gets Rs 8 crore.

They have released one of their star batters Ishan Kishan as Varma got the nod.

Interestingly, they have not retained any overseas player, while also letting go of Mohammed Siraj, whom they could try getting back through RTM at the auction.
17:37   KKR release captain Shreyas Iyer

Kolkata Knight Riders have released captain Shreyas Iyer, who led them to the IPL 2024 title earlier this year.

16:57   Rishabh Pant to CSK?

Rishabh Pant is all set to leave Delhi Capitals after failing to agree terms with the team owners.

Chennai Super Kings could be seriously thinking of going all out to bag Pant at the IPL auction next month, said a report in The Indian Express.

Five-time champions CSK are likely to release Jadeja which allow them fund the purchase of Pant at the auction, as his bid is likely to touch Rs 20 crore.

They might also not want to lose out on Jadeja and could use the RTM option to get back the all-rounder in the auction.
16:33   IPL RTM ruling modified

The Right to Match (RTM) ruling carries a rider at this year's IPL mega auction.

At the past auction, when the original team of a player played the RTM it was at the end of the bidding process and the team could just retain their player at that bidding price.

Now, the bidding team is allowed one more bid and that bid could go higher and higher.

For example, if the bidding closes at Rs 6 crore (Rs 60 million) for Rohit Sharma, and the home team (in this case Mumbai Indians) plays the RTM for him, the bidding team could put a final bid of even Rs say 10 crore (Rs 100 million), if they thought the player was worth it and MI would have to match that closing bid to retain Rohit's services.

This could practically nullify the advantage of holding an RTM card. And, while it will change the dynamics of the auctions, it can also put a spoke in the wheels for the franchise that wish to retain their player.

16:30   Teams can retain up to six players

The 10 IPL franchises will be allowed to retain a maximum of six players from their previous squads, including one Right To Match (RTM) card.

Teams were allowed up to four retentions in the last mega auction held in 2022.

'The six retentions/RTMs can have a maximum of five capped players (Indian and overseas) and a maximum of two uncapped [Indians] players,' the IPL stated.

In case a franchise wants to retain five capped players, the following amounts will be deducted from the purse:

For the first three retentions: Rs 18 crore (Rs 180 million), Rs 14 crore (Rs 140 million) and Rs 11 crore (Rs 110 million). For the next two: Rs 18 crore (Rs 180 million) and Rs 14 crore (Rs 140 million).

Each uncapped player retained will be valued at Rs 4 crores (Rs 40 million) and this amount will be subtracted from the Rs 120 crore (Rs 1.2 billion).

The teams that retain five capped players and one uncapped player will have their purse size cut down by Rs 79 crore (Rs 790 million) and will go into the auction with just Rs 41 crore (Rs 410 million).

If a franchise retains four capped and two uncapped players, it will lose Rs 65 crore (Rs 650 million) from its purse.

However, a franchise will not be able to use the RTM card at the mega auction if they retain 6 players.

16:28   Rahul, Pant, Iyer set to be released

The IPL 2025 retention list will be released on Thursday and will be the starting point of the hype, spice and buzz that the cash-rich T20 league brings every year.

With a lot of big names set to be retained and several youngsters to backed, there could be some names that could bid adieu to their respective franchises.

Rishabh Pant, K L Rahul and Shreyas Iyer -- the three young stars of Indian cricket and captains of their IPL teams -- could be headed to the auction after failing to agree deals with their franchises.

Shreyas Iyer, who led Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL 2024 title, could be the biggest name to be released after he failed to agree on a new deal with his team. KKR could also let go of star all-rounder Andre Russell and Mitchell Starc -- the highest paid player in the history of IPL.

Rishabh Pant could also be headed to the auction after disagreements with the team owners, while Rahul is unlikely to continue at Lucknow Super Giants after the team's below-par showing last season.

These three players could attract strong bidding wars if they do make it to the auction.

The 10 IPL franchises have to submit their retention to the BCCI by the deadline of 5pm IST on Thursday, October 31, 2024.
