India 9-0 (4 Ovs) vs England | SCORECARD

Woakes continues. Big appeal as he raps Rahul on the pads - full and straight, but the flick is missed. England opt against the review; looked to be sliding down leg. Rahul plays out the rest of the over watchfully. Maiden.

Carse from the other end. Jaiswal goes for an expansive cover drive but is beaten. Makes no mistake next ball - drills it through cover for four. Defends the rest. Four runs from the over.

After 4 overs, India are 9 for no loss. Tidy start from England!

India off to a cautious start

India 5-0 (2 Ovs) vs England | SCORECARD

The England fielders are set. KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal - both centurions at Headingley - stride purposefully to the crease. Jaiswal on strike, Woakes with the new ball. Three slips and a gully in place. A brief delay as Stokes jogs to long-off to report a distracting glare from a window. That's quickly dealt with - and we're ready to go.

Woakes begins with a probing length delivery; Jaiswal shoulders arms. The next two are defended solidly. Another leave follows. And now we're off the mark - Woakes strays onto the pads, and Jaiswal glances it fine for the first boundary of the day.

Final ball: a big swing, but no connection. Four runs from the opening over.

Brydon Carse to bowl from the other end.

Rahul taps it back to the bowler and looks for a single, but Jaiswal isnt interested. Lets the next one go.

He gets off the mark with a gentle push square on the leg side for a single.
Jaiswal defends the final ball back to Carse.

Just one run from the second over. Solid start from England.

Akash Deep replaces Bumrah

India have gone in with three all-rounders including two spinners in Jadeja and Sundar.

The young Sai Sudharsan is left out after playing just one Test, with Karun Nair expected to take his place at No 3.

Interestingly, India have still not included left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav as they preferred Sundar to add depth to the lower order batting.

'We were tempted to play Kuldeep but decided to add some depth to the batting,' said Gill at the toss.

India have as many as six bowling options in Siraj, Prasidh, Akash Deep, Jadeja, Sundar and Reddy.

Check out the playing XIs:

England: Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes (captain), Jamie Smith (w/k), Chris Woakes, Brydon Carse, Josh Tongue, Shoaib Bashir.

India: Yashasvi Jaiswal, K L Rahul, Karun Nair, Shubman Gill (captain), Rishabh Pant (w/k), Nitish Kumar Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, Washington Sundar, Akash Deep, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna.

England opt to bowl; India rest Bumrah

England captain Ben Stokes has won the toss and elected to bowl against India in the second Test in Birmingham on Wednesday.

The big news from Edgbaston is that Jasprit Bumrah has been rested and has been replaced.

'Just to manage his workload. This was an important match for us but the third match is at Lord's and there could be more from the wicket for him there,' said Gill at the toss.

There are two other changes for India as Washington Sundar takes the place of Sai Sudharsan, while Nitish Kumar Reddy replaces Shardul Thakur.

Meanwhile, England have fielded the same playing XI.

Can India End Birmingham Jinx?

Team India
Team India

After suffering a heartbreaking five wicket defeat at Headingley despite dominating much of the Test match, India, led by the young Shubman Gill, will want to win the second Test in Birmingham, starting on Wednesday, July 2, 2025.

Edgbaston has been a fortress India has yet to breach.

Their dreams have often crumbled at this venue -- boasting a dismal record of seven losses and one draw in eight attempts, their second-worst at any Test ground.

Three out of their eight defeats have been quite comprehensive -- by an innings, which clearly underlines their struggles at the venue.

Just like the recent loss in the Headingley Test, India's last match at Birmingham in July 2022 was a case of missed opportunities -- finishing on the losing side despite being superior over the first couple of days.

Interestingly, in four out of the last five Tests, the team winning the toss has elected to bat, but only one has finished on the winning side.

India's Test matches at Birmingham:
  •     1967: India lost by 132 runs
  •     1974: India lost by an innings and 78 runs
  •     1979: India lost by an innings and 83 runs
  •     1986: Match Drawn
  •     1996: India lost by 8 wickets
  •     2011: India lost by an innings and 211 runs
  •     2018: India lost by 31 runs
  •     2022: India lost by 7 wickets

Will India rest Bumrah in Birmingham?

Jasprit Bumrah
Jasprit Bumrah

Welcome to the coverage of the second Test between England and India at Edgbaston in Birmingham on Wednesday.

The big talking point ahead of the game is over Jasprit Bumrah's availability.

Skipper Shubman Gill said on Tuesday, on the eve of the Test, that a decision on his lead pacer will be taken only after taking a look at the pitch. He also stated that Bumrah is available for selection.

If Bumrah is rested from the second of his decided quota of three Tests, the pace line-up is expected to be Mohammed Siraj, Akash Deep and Prasidh Krishna.

India's catching would have to be a lot better after the horror show at Leeds, costing Yashasvi Jaiswal his spot in the slip cordon.

The batting department has a settled look though India would be desperate to add runs late in the innings after two lower-order collapses that cost them dearly.

The likes of K L Rahul, Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant and captain Shubman Gill would be aiming to build on the gains made in the series opener.

India are likely to bolster their spin attack by bringing in either Washington Sundar or Kuldeep Yadav to the playing XI alongside Ravindra Jadeja.

Nitish Reddy could replace Shardul Thakur as the all-rounder after the latter failed to make an impression with both bat and ball at Headingley, while Akash Deep is likely to replace Bumrah if he is rested.
