Rabada ends South Africa's frustration as he traps Carey leg before wicket, who has taken the DRS.

There is no inside edge this time and the ball has struck in line. It is going on to clip the leg stump which means it stays with the umpire's call.

Carey walks back after a handy knock of 43 from 50 balls which was instrumental in getting Australia back, as he put on 61 runs for the eighth wicket with Starc.

Rabada oversteps for yet another no-ball before Nathan Lyon gets the edge but the ball doesn't carry to Markram at second slip.

Starc plays a nice drive but can't beat Bavuma in the covers, who comes up with a diving stop to save the boundary before Rabada bowls another no-ball.

Mulder is back into the attack. Starc gets the edge first ball but it doesn't carry to first slip before Starc misses the clip but the ball goes fine off his pads for four leg byes.

The slip fielders have come up and that proves crucial. Starc gets a thick outside edge but Jansen at gully puts down the catch. That ball came quickly to him at a nice height but he is unable to hold on after getting a hand on it.

Starc flicks the fifth ball square on the leg side for two runs before he leaves the last ball.

Australia are 144/8 in 40 overs at stumps on Day 2, as they stretch their lead to 218 runs.

Starc has played a vital role with the bat, with 16 not out from 47 balls. His 61-run stand for the eighth wicket with Carey (43) turned the tide in the third session in Australia's favour.

The pitch is likely to get better for batting on Day 3 but Australia's bowlers will also be fancying their chances of skittling out South Africa like they did in the first innings.

The runs are coming at a good pace for Australia. Rabada continues as Carey taps the first ball into the leg side for one before Starc misses the flick but the ball goes off the pads to get him two leg byes.

Starc steals a quick run to mid-on followed by singles off the next two balls, to get six from the over.

South Africa make a change as spinner Keshav Maharaj comes into the attack. Carey and Starc easily pick three singles from the spinner's first over.

Rabada induces the edge as Starc pushes away from his body but wicketkeeper Verreynne diving to his left is unable to hold on to a sharp chance.

Carey plays a cracking straight drive past mid-on for a four before Starc gets lucky as he offers no shot to the length ball seaming into him, with the ball passing close to the stumps.

Maharaj continues as Carey picks one and Starc takes a single to take the lead past 200.

Carey easily sweeps Maharaj in the gap behind square for a four and keeps strike with one from the last ball.

The duo have now put on 58 from 83 balls for the eighth wicket to swell Australia's lead.

There was a clear inside edge as the decision is overturned. The left-hander smashes the next through the covers for a four as Australia go past the 100-run mark.

Carey punches the last ball down the ground as Bavuma makes a desperate stop to keep it down to three runs, as Jansen concedes 11 from the over.

Jansen bowls a maiden over to Starc before Rabada comes into the attack. Carey swats the first ball into the leg side for two runs before he glances the third ball fine off his pads for a four.

Another no-ball from Jansen, South Africa's 14th of the match, as the tall pacer overstepped.

He then beats Starc on the outside edge with one that moves away before the edge falls short of Markram at second slip for the fourth time.

In the next over, Rabada bowls a no-ball to add to Australia's total. 

Starc clips the pacer for one before Carey cuts the fifth ball past point for a four as the duo add some valuable runs for Australia.

Ngidi continues as Carey gets a single from the first ball before Starc gets the edge but it falls short of the fielder at second slip.

He clips the third ball for a single and Carey plays a nice straight drive for two runs and defends the last ball.

Mulder continues as Starc flicks the third ball in the gap at midwicket for three runs and Carey takes one off the last ball.

Ngidi is unlucky as Carey gets a thick outside edge but again the ball just short of Markram at second slip.

Carey misses out on some easy runs as he hits the full toss to deep point for a single and Starc takes one off the next.

Ngidi has a confident shout for leg before turned down against Alex Carey, who misses the flick.

South Africa are pretty confident as they take the DRS. There is no bat involved but the ball is going over the stumps as South Africa lose a review.

Carey pushes the pacer on the off-side for a single before Pat Cummins drives a full delivery through the covers for a boundary. He hits the next uppishly as he manages to clear the fielder at covers for a couple of runs.

Ngidi has the last laugh as he bowls Cummins for six. That delivery was pitched right up as Cummins missed the flick with the ball going off his pads to crash into the stumps.

Australia reeling on 73/7 in 25 overs, for an overall lead of 147 runs.

Ngidi is on fire, having taken 3/29 in seven overs, with Australia losing five wickets for 29 runs in the space of 42 balls.

Australia will be looking for another 40-50 runs and stretch the lead beyond 200.

They will also take confidence from the fact that South Africa crashed for 138 in their first innings.

This is incredible bowling from the South African pacers. Mulder leaves Australia in further strife with the wicket of the dangerous Head, who is beaten on the inside edge, before the ball goes off the pads into the pads.

Head is bowled for nine as Australia slip to 66/6 in the 24th over, for an overall lead of 140.

South Africa's pacers are breathing fire as Australia collapse on Day 2.

Mulder bowls another cracking delivery to beat Pat Cummins on the inside edge.

Nearly another wicket as Travis Head flashes his bat at a short wide delivery but is beaten.

He then clips the third ball for a single to get off the mark and Webster takes one to midwicket.

Head misses the glance but the ball goes fine off his pads for four leg byes.

Wiaan Mulder comes back into the attack. Webster collects an easy single off his pads before Head misses the flick but the leg before shout is rejected as the ball looked to be going down.

Ngidi misses out on a wicket as Webster gets a thick outside edge but the ball goes through the gap between the slips.

However, he gets his man next ball. The incoming delivery swings in sharply to strike Webber in front as he is given out leg before wicket.

Webber takes the review but he has no chance as the ball has struck in line and going on to hit the stumps.

Australia slip to 64/5 in 23 overs, for an overall lead of 138 runs.

Ngidi produces a possible game-changing moment with the vital wicket of Australia's batting mainstay Smith.

Smith is struck on the pads by the full delivery but the confident shout for leg before wicket is turned down.

South Africa take the review and manage to overturn the decision as the impact is in line and the ball is going on to hit the off-stump.

Smith is dismissed for 13 as Australia slip to 48/4 in the 19th over.

Smith had shuffled across but missed the full delivery which moved away late to hit the batter on the backpad.

Ngidi, who was disappointing with the ball in the first innings, has bounced back with a crucial wicket.

Jansen gives South Africa a huge boost with the wicket of Labuschagne, who is caught behind for 22.

A nothing shot from the right-hander as he looks to drive the full delivery, but the ball swings away to take the outside edge which is neatly held by wicketkeeper Verreynne.

Australia are 44/3 with an overall lead of 118 but South Africa keep themselves in the hunt by chipping away at the wickets.

Smith, Labuschagne steady Australia

Marco Jansen from the other end and he will operate from round the wicket. He gets the ball to jag in sharply into Smith, who is beaten on the inside edge. The next ball again swings into Smith, who gets the inside edge for a single and Labuschagne is able to defend the last three balls.

Things seem to have settled down nicely for Australia after the tea break. And with Rabada not in operation, the two batters are finding it easier to cope.

Ngidi bowls another sedate over conceding just two singles as Australia look to get together a partnership.

Jansen tries the bouncer but Labuschagne is able to easily duck under it before he clips the fifth ball for one and Smith keeps out the last ball.

Smith and Labuschagne are not having much trouble as the ball has now gone a bit old. The odd ball is still moving around but the South African pacers are not that threatening at the moment.

Labuschagne gets a thick outside edge as he leans forward to defend but the edge falls well short of second slip.

Labuschagne is unbeaten on 16 from 48 balls, while Smith is on four as they stretch their lead to 106 runs.

Rabada, who took 5/51 in the first innings, has again done the damage with the ball with two wickets in a single over to keep South Africa's hopes alive.

The ball straightens a touch as Khawaja pushes at it only to get the edge and is caught behind for six to be dismissed by Rabada in both innings.

A huge boost for South Africa close to the tea break as Australia lose their first wicket.

Australia are 28/1 in 10.2 overs, stretching their lead to 102 runs.

Rabada works his magic again as he strikes again in the over with the wicket of Cameron Green.

The right-hander charges down the pitch and looks to defend but gets the edge and is caught in the slips for a two-ball duck.

Just like in the first innings, Rabada has dismissed Khawaja and Green in the same over.

Steve Smith shuffles across to defend Rabada to midwicket and drives the last ball straight past mid-on for a four.

Jansen keeps plugging outside the line of off-stump but Labuschagne is able to easily keep out the rest of the over.

In the next over, Khawaja clips Rabada through square leg for one before Labuschagne inside edges the next on to his pads and again gets the next off the inside half.

Late movement for Rabada as the ball to move away and beat Labuschagne on the outside edge. 

Medium pacer Wiaan Mulder comes into the attack. Khawaja keeps the scoreboard ticking as he pushes the second ball on the leg side for one.

Labuschagne takes a couple of steps down before he gets the leading edge but it falls safely.

Singles off the last two balls as Australia reach 28 for no loss in 10 overs.

Rabada starts his second over with a no-ball before Labuschagne plays out the next six balls as he aims to get his eye in and keep out the new ball without much damage.

In the next over, Khawaja taps Jansen on the off-side for a single to get off the mark before he also oversteps to concede a no-ball.

Rabada strikes Labuschagne on the pads with the inswinger as South Africa appeal for leg before which is turned down and they don't review as the impact looks quite high.

He then beats the right-hander on the outside edge with one that jags away to hit the thigh pad and Labuschagne clips the fourth ball on the leg side for one.

Khawaja plays a nicely-timed pull shot but can't beat the fielder at midwicket.

In the next over, South Africa have a confident shout for caught behind turned down against Khawaja and this time they take the review.

There is a clear gap between the bat and the ball as the review is lost. Khawaja clips the fifth ball through square leg for two runs and plays and misses again off the last ball.

Rabada overpitches on the stumps as Labuschange flicks it in the gap through midwicket for a four and clips the last ball to deep square leg for one, to get seven from the first over.

Fittingly, Cummins finishes off the innings with the wicket of Rabada. The left-hander swings Cummins across the line as the ball goes high on the leg side. Beau Webster at deep square leg fails to pick the ball first before he does well to run forward and put in the dive to take a stunning catch.

Cummins finishes with splendid figures of 6/28 in 18.1 overs to send South Africa crashing for 138 in 57.1 overs.

Australia take a vital 74-run first innings lead.

Cummins also completed the landmark of 300 wickets in Test cricket in his 68th match to put Australia in control.

Cummins registers the best bowling figures by a captain in a Test match at Lord's.

Lyon will look to hold one end up while the pacers attack from the other. Bedingham watchfully defends the first two balls before he steals a quick single off the third to mid-off.

Keshav Maharaj gets off the mark with a single on the off-side and Bedingham clips the last ball with the spin through midwicket for another run.

Cummins will look to finish it off quickly without giving away too much. Bedingham inside edges the second ball on the leg side for one.

Maharaj comes down the track to get to the pitch and lofts Lyon over the covers for a boundary.

Cummins strikes again. After starting the over with a sharp bouncer, he bowls full as Bedingham plays from the crease but the ball moves away to take the edge and is taken by wicketkeeper Carey.

Bedingham is dismissed for 45 as South Africa slip to 135/8.

Cummins has excellent figures of 5/28 in his 18th over. He becomes the first captain in 17 years to take a five-wicket haul at Lord's after Daniel Vettori in 2008.

Kagiso Rabada is greeted by a flurry of bouncers as he is hit on the body two balls in a row, once getting hit on the helmet.

Play resumes as expected after a small delay. Cummins starts off with the ball in the second session.

Kyle Verreynne keeps out the first two balls before he inside edges the third into the leg side and pushes the fourth ball for a single.

Bedingham clips the last ball off his pads for another run which also helps him retain the strike as South Africa reach 123/5 in 50 overs.

Spinner Nathan Lyon from the other end. Bedingham slaps the third ball through the off-side for a single and Verreynne hits the next to long-on for one.

A sharp bouncer as Verreynne ducks under which is ruled a no-ball for overstepping. The next ball is full and swings sharply into the right-hander, who misses the clip and is struck on the pads but the LBW shout is turned down.

Australia take the review and manage to overturn the decision as the impact is in line and the ball is going on to hit the leg stump. Initially it looked the ball would be going or at best clip the outside of leg stump but the ball tracker has left everyone surprised, as it is showing to be hitting the leg stump.

Verreynne walks backs for 13 as South Africa slip to 126/6.

Marco Jansen is beaten first ball as he plays inside the line but the ball goes straight on past the outside edge and the same next ball.

Cummins strikes again in the same over. Marco Jansen ends up chipping a simple return back to the bowler to be dismissed for a duck.

Play hasn't started after lunch at Lord's because of a light drizzle. The rain is not that heavy and is likely to clear in the next 10-15 minutes. The Hover cover is in place to cover the pitch, while another cover is brought on to protect the bowlers' run-ups.

Medium pacer Beau Webster comes into the attack. Verreynne cuts the third ball to deep point for a single and Bedingham takes one off the next.

Verreynne gets the edge but he has played with soft hands as the ball falls just short of Steve Smith at second slip fielder, who makes a good attempt.

Verreynne glances the last ball to fine leg for a single to bring up South Africa's 100, in the 45th over.

Hazlewood bowls a tidy over as Verreynne manages just a single off the third ball as Bedingham looking solid in his defence.

Verreynne clips Webster off his pads for two runs and the pacer has overstepped for another extra run.

He guides the next to thirdman for a single and Bedinghamgets one at square leg.

Some width from Webster as Verreynne punches it past Labuschange in the covers for a couple of runs.

Hazlewood tries the short ball but Bedingham easily pulls it for a single and Verreynne flicks the pacer past mid-on for a couple.

Webster to bowl the final over of the day. The inswinging delivery is clipped square by Bedingham for a couple of runs.

A moment of interest for the fans as Bedingham is struck high on the pads by the inswinger as Australia appeal for handling the ball but the umpire turns it down. Wicketkeeper Alex Carey wanted to take the catch but Bedingham picked the ball out of the flap of his pads and put it down.

Bedingham ends the session with two confident shots, hitting Webster straight down the ground for a four and slammed the last ball through the covers for another four.

South Africa have enjoyed a good session, losing just one wicket in the morning session, to reach 121/5 in 49 overs at the lunch break.

Bedingham has batted well to score 39 from 95 balls, while Verreynne is on 11.

They now trail Australia by 91 runs.

Resuming on 43/4, South Africa did well to score 78 runs in 27 overs to get themselves back in the running.

Australia have managed to keep the flow of runs down while making the breakthrough.

Lyon ensures he maintains the pressure as he bowls a maiden over to Bedingham -- his second in succession to the right-hander. Verreynne clips Cummins on the leg side for a single to get off the mark and Bedingham again plays defensively to keep out the last five balls.

Hazlewood back into the attack in place of Lyon. Bedingham finally ends the sequence of dots as he drives Hazlewood through the covers for two runs and nearly perishes off the last ball as he chases a wide one.

The next ball is full and this time Bedingham gets it off the middle, driving it straight back past the non-striker for a four.

He pushes the fifth ball into the off-side for a quick single and Bavuma defends the last ball.

Australia make a change as Nathan Lyon comes into the attack, to bowl the 37th over.

Lyon from round the wicket with a slip and short leg in place. Bedingham keeps out the first three balls before he takes a single and Bavuma blocks the last two balls.

Cummins back from the other end. Bedingham has shown a lot of patience, he has a lot of experience in these conditions courtesy of playing county cricket for quite a few years.

He defends the first three balls before he is beaten as Cummins manages to get the ball to hold its line and he inside edges the last ball for one.

Lyon from over the wicket as Bedingham does well to play late nad with the spin, defending the off-spinner on the leg side.

The last ball turns sharply and also bounce as Bedingham fends it on the leg side.

Against the run of play, Cummins strikes with the key of Bavuma. The South Africa captain plays the uppish drive as Marnus Labuschange comes up with a stunning catch in the covers, diving full length to his right to pouch the ball.

Bavuma walks back after a good hand of 36 from 84 balls, having put on 64 for the fifth wicket to get South Africa back on track.

Kyle Verreynne walks in at No 7. South Africa will need another good partnership to get close to Australia's first innings total.

Bavuma very good on the off-side, making most of width as he steers Hazlewood behind point for two runs. 

Another delivery wide of the off-stump and this time Bavuma lofts it over the off-side for a boundary and leaves the last two balls.

Bedingham looking to just hold one end up while Bavuma looks for the runs from the other end.

Cummins tries the bouncer but Bedingham ducks under it before he inside edges the last ball on to his pads.

Starc back into the attack. He overpitches as Bavuma plays a cracking drive along the ground through the covers for a four to raise the 50-run stand for the fifth wicket from 78 balls.

Bedingham is beaten by a beauty from Starc as he pokes away from his body. He plays and misses again next ball attempting to drive the full outswinger before he gets a leading edge off the last ball.

Bavuma continues to grow in confidence. He makes a statement, playing a thumping pull shot off his opposite number Cummins for a six over square leg.

He is beaten on the outside edge before he leaves the last ball.

The first hour of Day 2 has belonged to South Africa, who have recovered to 87/4 in 35 overs.

Bavuma has led the charge with the bat, with 36 not out from 79 balls, while Bedingham has looked solid on 17.

The duo have put on 57 from 88 balls to get the Proteas back on track.

Hazlewood strikes with the wicket of Bavuma to get Australia the first breakthrough of Day 2.

The inswinger beats Bavuma on the inside edge and strikes him on the backpad to catch him plumb LBW.

But the review saves Bavuma as the Snicko shows a spike when the ball passes the bat. The inside edge to Bavuma's rescue as he gets a much-needed lifeline.

Infact, Bavuma didn't even seem confident when he went up for the review, it was more in hope.

The next ball holds its line to beat Bavuma on the outside edge before he misses the flick but takes a leg bye off the last ball.

Pat Cummins replaces Starc with Australia looking for their first breakthrough of the day. Bavuma pushes the second ball into the off-side for a single before Bedingham keeps out the next few balls before he is beaten last ball on the outside edge.

Bavuma has kept the scoreboard moving along with a couple of fours and regular singles. He pushes Cummins into the off-side for one before Bedingham keeps out the rest of the over.

Mitchell Starc starts off with the ball for Australia on Day 2. Captain Temba Bavuma defends the first ball before he is beaten next as he pokes away from his body but the ball moves away to go past the edge.

He blocks the next couple of balls followed by a leave. Bavuma plays a crisp drive off the last ball straight to Labuschagne at mid-off, who is unable to stop the ball cleanly and ends up conceding a couple of runs.

Josh Hazlewood from the other end. David Bedingham solidly blocks the first ball and does the same next ball.

Bedingham misses the clip as the ball goes past the outside edge and clips the pads as it falls well short of the first slip fielder. 

The last ball is a beauty -- back of length swinging away to go past the edge.

South Africa will be aiming to bounce back after losing early wickets late on the opening day.

South Africa were reeling on 43/4 at stumps on the first day after dismissing defending champions Australia for 212.

Seamer Kagiso Rabada took 5/51 as South Africas bowling unit made a strong start to the match but their inexperienced batting line-up came under fire as soon as they began their reply.

Australias fast bowling attack proved as fearsome as anything South Africa had to offer and by the close of play they were firmly in command.

South Africa trail Australia by 169 runs after a day on which 14 wickets fell and captain Temba Bavuma (3) and David Bedingham (8) will resume on Thursday with a daunting task ahead.
