India posted a huge 503/9 declared in their first innings before picking up two late wickets to leave Sri Lanka reeling on 8/2 at stumps on the rain-hit Day 2 of the second Test in Colombo on Monday.

Prasidh Krishna got Lahiru Udara caught in the slips for 1 in the second over.

Spinner Manav Suthar also struck in his first over, getting nightwatchman Prabath Jayasuriya leg before wicket for 2.

Kamil Mishara (5 not out) was at the crease at the end of second day's play.

Earlier, Dhruv Jurel struck an unbeaten 115 as India declared their first innings at 503 for 9. He underlined his credentials as a specialist Test batter with a 177-ball 115 not out, his second hundred, studded with nine fours and two sixes.

The umpires checking the light metre before opting to continue play. India realising the Sri Lankan batters want to walk off the field bring on spin.

Manav Suthar comes into the attack to bowl the third over. Suthar has a loud appeal for leg before wicket turned down against Jayasuriya, who was struck on the pads by the arm ball which skids straight on.

The delivery clocked at 98kmph skids in sharply and strikes the right-hander on the pads but it is clearly going down.

He pushes the fourth ball into the covers for a single.

Kamil Mishara clips the next ball for a quick run but Jaiswal's fiery throw is not stopped by wicketkeeper Jurel to get him five overthrows. Mishara gets off the mark with a five, including four overthrows.

Suthar gets his man off the last ball as Jayasuriya is given out leg before wicket before he takes the review.

Once again the arm ball strikes him on the pads and this time it looks much closer.

The impact is on the line and the ball is going on to clip the leg stump as the decision stays with umpire's call.

Jayasuriya walks off angrily as the Sri Lankans are clearly unhappy about being made to play in the fading light.

Play resumes in Colombo with 15 more overs left in the day.

Siraj continues with the ball as Udara offers no shot to the first ball faced. He clips the next off his pads to deep square leg for a single to get Sri Lanka off the mark.

Mishara gets a leading edge which goes towards gully before the last ball beats him on the outside edge.

Prasidh Krishna strikes in his first over. The new ball jags away quite a bit as Udara (1) looking to defend gets the edge and Jaiswal takes a superb diving catch in the slips.

Extra bounce and movement for Prasidh as the ball moved away quite with Udara squared up completely. The edge was flying but Jaiswal flung himself to his right to come up with a stunning catch.

Udara not happy as he makes his way back, perhaps complaining about the fading light.

Prabath Jayasuriya walks in as the nightwatchman at No 3. He clips Prasidh off his pads for a single and Mishara keeps out the last two balls.

The Indian players still not convinced as they hang around on the outfield. The pitch and the square is covered but a lot of the outfield is still open.

More dark clouds gather above the SSC ground.

There seems to be no rain yet but the covers are in place expecting a heavy downpour considering the overhead conditions.

It remains to be seen if we have any more play on Day 2.

Dhruv Jurel takes over the gloves as he shows great commitment to take the field despite batting the whole day. Rishabh Pant injured his arm and shoulder while batting and will not keep wickets.

Udara leaves the first ball before he gets a leading edge off the next. There is a light drizzle as the covers are called back.

The Sri Lankan openers are back in the dressing room but the Indian players are not keen to leave the field.

The umpires had a discussion with the groundstaff before more covers were brought out to the middle. It has gone quite dark at the SSC and more rain seems to be around the corner.

Jurel has cut loose. He takes on the short ball from Fernando, pulling it powerfully over square leg for a six.

The next bouncer doesn't rise much as Jurel pulls it along the ground to fine leg for one.

But Fernando has overstepped to concede an extra run.

A sharp bouncer down the leg side as Prasidh tries to fend but the ball moves away past his shoulder.

Prasidh drills a full toss through the covers for a four to get off the mark and also take India past 500.

India immediately declare their innings on 503/9 in 138 overs with Jurel unbeaten on 115.

A superb knock from Jurel who struggled only when his score was on 99 but he was vital in India getting past 500, which should be a match-winning total.

The clouds are again gathering above the ground and we could have another rain interruption.

Siraj is given out leg before wicket to Jayausriya as he misses the big swing across the line. He takes the review but knows his fate as he hugs Jurel before making his way back.

Siraj, who batted patiently to score 3 from 29 balls, finally decides to play his natural attacking game but loses his wicket in the process.

Prasidh Krishna watchfully keeps the remaining five deliveries of the over to ensure Jurel gets the strike next over.

Siraj takes a single off the third ball to get Jurel back on strike.

Jurel gently drives a full delivery to the fielder at mid-off and pushes the next towards mid-on for another dot ball.

He keeps out the last ball to make it nine dots in a row for Jurel.

Sri Lanka have brought in the field for Siraj to deny him the single. Siraj at his watchful best looking to block everything.

The last ball slides in with the arm as Siraj is struck on the pads but there seems to be an inside edge.

Just a single from the last three overs as India's momentum is affected slightly.

Sri Lanka doing the right thing, not giving away the easy singles.

Fernando keeps it on the line of the stumps as Jurel continues to be cautious with the first three balls driven to the fielders.

Jurel hits the fourth ball on the bounce over the bowler for a risky single to mid-off. He has to dive to make his crease and is lucky that the fielder missed with the direct hit else he would have been dismissed.

Jurel is delighted as he celebrates his second Test hundred with team-mate Siraj.

Jurel batting much more freely after completing his century as he heaves the last ball from Fernando over long-on for a six.

Play resumes at SSC in Colombo as Asitha continues with the ball. Jurel drives the first ball straight down the ground for two runs and then takes one.

Mohammed Siraj pulls the short ball down to fine leg for one to get off the mark.

Jurel picks a single off the last ball to take his score 99 and also retain the strike.

Prabath Jayasuriya from the other end with the fielders all called up to stop the single. He drives the first ball to the fielder on the leg side and blocks the next two as the spinner gives it some flight.

More flight as Jurel leans forward to defend, he is taking his time to get to the landmark.

Jayasuriya pulls back his length as Jurel defends from the crease and keeps out the last ball for a maiden over.

The umpires out to conduct an inspection of the conditions with nearly all the covers being peeled off.

The overhead conditions have improved drastically and it is much brighter now at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo.

The umpires have announced that play will resume at 4.25pm IST.

Play will go on till 6pm IST (extra 30 minutes available). 13 overs have been lost because of rain.

The rain has stopped and the groundstaff are working on removing the water from the covers.

Hopefully if there is no more rain then then the match should resume in the next 30-40 minutes.

It remains to be seen if India continue to bat or if they declare straightaway. But they could bat for a couple of overs and give Jurel, on 95, the chance to get a deserved Test century.

The covers have been rushed back as the rain is back at the SSC in Colombo. This could turn out to be a long delay now as it has once again gone dark and more rain could be on the way.

It rained briefly for a moment but has stopped now. But the overhead conditions don't look that encouraging as the covers stay in place for now.

Yashasvi Jaiswal Slapped With Hefty Fine For Clash

Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sri Lanka bowler Asitha Fernando have been sanctioned by the ICC following their incident on the opening day of the second Test in Colombo on Sunday.

'Both players were found to have breached Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “inappropriate physical contact with a Player, Player Support Personnel, Umpire, Match Referee or any other person (including a spectator during an International Match),' said ICC in a media release.

'As a result, Jaiswal and Fernando were fined 25 per cent of their match fee and were handed one demerit point each.'

The incident occurred in the 17th over of India's batting innings after Fernando dismissed Jaiswal. The India batter walked towards Fernando and the two exchanged words, after which Fernando moved his head towards Jaiswal. In response, Jaiswal leant in, resulting in their heads making contact.

It has stopped raining in Colombo as the groundstaff starting taking off the covers.

This was a heavy spell of rain which left plenty of water on the covers.

The pitch and the square covers have already been peeled off.

It won't be long before the game resumes.

The next ball is a full toss which Jurel flicks through midwicket for a four.

India are 475/8 in 131.2 as the players are forced off the field because of rain.

Jurel is unbeaten on a solid 95 from 155 balls, with nine fours, while Siraj is yet to score from 17 balls.

This is quite a heavy spell of rain at the moment in Colombo. This doesn't look good right now and we could be set for a long delay.

Siraj pulls the bouncer down to fine leg but decides against the run. He clips the last ball to deep square leg and again no run as Siraj is yet to score from 16 balls faced.

Both batters not taking singles. This time Jurel hits Jayasuriya to the fielders in the deep but decides against taking a run.

After keeping out the first four balls, Jurel picks a single off the fifth and Siraj promptly blocks the last ball.

Jayasuriya gets the ball to turn as Jurel gets the edge which falls well short of the slip fielder, who does well to stop it on the bounce.

Jurel takes a single from the fifth ball giving Siraj the strike for only the last ball.

Jurel taking on Dinusha, as he reverse sweeps the spinner behind point for a four and takes one off the next.

Siraj at his watchful best as he carefully defends the last three balls.

Meanwhile, plenty of dark clouds are hovering around SSC prompting the groundstaff to swing into action.

Jayausriya continues and once again Jurel happy to take a single off the second ball. Siraj playing his role to perfection, blocking the last four balls.

The groundstaff have moved towards the covers while play continues.

Jayasuriya ends Sri Lanka's frustration with the wicket of Suthar. The left-hander is caught behind for 18, getting the edge as he plays for the turn but the ball goes straight on.

Suthar pushed away from the body without moving his foot as the ball skidded straight on to take the outside edge.

Mohammed Siraj will also look to chance his arm or will he look to provide support to Jurel, who needs 21 runs for his century.

With the pitch slowing down, Kumara's bouncers not posing much of a threat for Suthar, who is doing well to get on top of the bounce.

Change at the other end as Jayasuriya replaces Nuwantha. The two Indian batters pick a single each off with Suthar looking confident against Jayasuriya too.

Sri Lanka seem to be struggling to come up with a plan to get the wicket of Suthar. While Jurel has looked solid and confident, his partner Suthar has also grown in confidence.

An effort ball from Kumar from over the wicket, getting the bouncer to sail across Suthar, who pushes at it and is lucky not to have gloved it.

The next ball is full and much slower as Suthar easily flicks it through midwicket for three runs.

Kumara as expected dishes out the short balls to Suthar, who can only fend it away but with soft hands.

The left-hander is being quite brave, getting behind the line of the short balls and looking to play with the bat.

The wicket is offering a lot of turn but Jurel has been quite solid with his footwork, going right back or forward.

Jurel keeping most of the strike against Nuwantha, who is getting quite a lot of purchase from the pitch.

The next bouncer is quicker and higher as the left-hander easily ducks under it.

He then defends the bouncer with soft hands close to the pitch not giving the two close-in fielders a chance and keeps out the last two balls.

Sri Lanka happy to give Jurel the single early in the over. This time he takes a single off the fourth ball against Nuwantha but the spinner has overstepped to concede another extra run.

Suthar breaks the shackles as he comes down the track to loft Nuwantha straight back over his head for a four. The left-hander clips the next in the gap at midwicket for a couple of runs.

In the next over, Jurel (61) gets a lifeline as he glances Nuwantha fine off his pads as the fielder at leg slip gets his hands to it but fails to hold on, with the ball going through for a four.

Jurel takes one before Suthar crashes a wide half-volley square on the off-side for a boundary.

In the next over, Jurel gets a thick inside edge off Fernando for a single. Suthar avoids the short ball down the leg side and avoids another bouncer before taking one.

Jurel makes most of an overpitched delivery flicking it through square leg for a four to take his score into the 70s.

Nuwantha giving it some flight against left-hander Suthar, who is getting well forward to block as he plays out a maiden over.

Rishabh Pant falls off the very first ball of the post-lunch session. Pant steps out to spinner Keshara Nuwantha and holes out straight to the fielder at long-off who was stationed quite a few distance inside from the boundary.

Pant walks back after an entertaining knock of 63 from 89 balls, with six fours and two sixes.

Pant and Jurel put India in command in the morning, adding 112 runs for the seventh wicket from 152 balls.

Manav Suthar keeps out the first few balls before he is beaten by a sharp turning delivery which also bounces to go past the edge. Even though he was beaten, Suthar will relish seeing the Sri Lankan spinners making the ball talk.

The pitch is expected to deteriorate as the match progresses and India's spinners will also hope to work their magic with the ball.

Rishabh Pant and Dhruv Jurel hit unbeaten half-centuries as India dominated the morning session on Day 2 of the second and final Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo on Monday.

Pant, who had retired hurt with injury on Day 1, returned to bat and smashed an entertaining 63 to power India to 419/6 in 112 overs at the lunch break on the second day.

Overall, India scored 119 runs in 27 overs in the morning session at a scoring rate of more than four.

Jurel was solid at the other end, scoring 59 not out, as the duo were involved in an unbeaten stand of 112 runs from 151 balls for the seventh wicket.

Sri Lanka tasted success early on Day 2 when Asitha Fernando dismissed debutant Saransh Jain for six.

Pant recovered from his injury sustained on the opening day and continued to target the bowlers. He took on the bouncers from the Sri Lankan pacers, and even hit Lahiru Kumara for a huge six which sailed out of the stadium.

India will look to lift the tempo in the post-lunch session and race towards a total in excess before they get Sri Lanka into bat in the third session.

Nuwantha continues with five minutes left for the lunch break. Jurel flicks Nuwantha to deep square leg for a single to raise the 100-run stand for the seventh wicket from 145 balls.

The two wicketkeepers have put India in firm control with their fluent partnership.

Jayasuriya to bowl the final over of the session but Pant not playing for lunch.

He pulls the short ball from the spinner over midwicket for a four. Pant then jumps down the track to heave Jayasuriya powerfully over midwicket for a six.

Slightly short from Jayasuriya as Pant rocks back to clip it in the gap at midwicket for one.

The last ball of the session is a beauty, sharp turn and bounce to beat Jurel all ends up.

In the next over, Jurel bring up his fifty in similar style pulling Jayasuriya for a four through midwicket.

That boundary also takes India past the 400-run mark, in the 110th over.

This is Jurel's third fifty in Test cricket and his second of the series which would go a large way in helping seal his spot as a specialist batter in the Indian team.

He gets two runs fine on the leg side off the fourth ball as India continue to pile on the runs.

Nuwantha has a confident shout for leg before turned down against Pant and again Sri Lanka don't review.

Pant was on the front foot trying to defend but missed and was struck on the pads.

Nuwantha was quite confident but the umpire was unmoved and so was his captain.

In the spinner's next over, Pant pulls a short ball through midwicket for a four to bring up his fifty from 81 balls -- his 21st in Test cricket.

India have scored at a good rate since Pant's arrival as they close in on the 400-run mark.

Nuwantha gives away three singles in the next over, his 30th of the innings as Sri Lanka's bowlers toil hard on a hot humid day.

The Sri Lankan spinners looking to dry up the boundaries and force Pant into a mistake.

So far, he has been quite good with his shot selection, using the sweep and reverse sweep quite effectively to disrupt the spinners.

Beautiful bowling from Nuwantha, dragging Pant forward with a flighted ball which turns away sharply to take the edge which goes along the ground past the slip fielder for a four.

Pant tries the reverse sweep but can't get it past point before he sweeps for a single and Jurel takes one off the last ball.

In the next over, Jayasuriya has a confident shout for leg before turned down against Jurel. That looked quite close and the bowler was pretty convinced but Sri Lanka captain Dhananjaya de Silva decided against the review.

Surprising that Sri Lanka didn't go for the review. The ball was clipping the leg stump which meant that the decision would have stayed with umpire's call but Sri Lanka would not have lost their review.

India on track to get past 400 by lunch with Pant on the hunt for runs and Jurel also looking comfortable.

Nearly a stumping chance as Pant looking to use his feet against Nuwantha quickly changed his mind and dragged his feet back inside the crease.

Pant takes a single down to long-on and Jurel keeps out the last ball.

Fernando continues the short ball tactics to Pant, who misses the pull shot this time as the bouncer goes down the leg side.

However, he gets on top of the bounce to pull the next to deep fine leg for one.

Jurel plays a cracking pull shot, smashing it square for a four to raise the 50-run stand for the seventh wicket from just 64 balls.

The pacer tries the yorker as Jurel adjusts well, clipping it off his pads for one.

India will be keen to get above 400, knowing the previous record at SSC, Colombo, with teams win all six games after posting 400-plus totals.

Another short ball which doesn't rise much as Pant easily taps it on the leg side.

In the next over, Jurel uses his feet to flick Nuwantha over midwicket for a four, doing well to adjust to the spin. He shows some solid defence to block the rest of the over.

Spin from both ends as Prabath Jayasuriya comes into the attack. Pant immediately targets the spinner, playing the reverse sweep for a single and Jurel hits the next ball over the covers for another run.

Pant uses his feet to swing the spinner over midwicket for just a single and Jurel keeps out the rest of the over.

India are 367/6 in 100 overs with Pant on 33 and Jurel on 37, with the duo having added 64 runs for the seventh wicket.

India reach 354/6 in 97 overs at the first drinks break on Day 2, having scored 54 runs in 11 overs while losing one wicket.

Pant provided the impetus after returning to the crease on Day 2, stroking 30, with two fours a six, while Jurel has looked solid on 27.

The physio comes out to check on Pant, who suffered a blow on his shoulder in the last over.

Pant continues after some treatment including the ice pack on his shoulder.

Nuwantha bowls a beauty to beat Pant, getting the ball to turn and bounce. The left-hander leaning forward to defend is beaten on the outside edge as the wicketkeeper also fails to gather the ball to concede four byes.

Pant drives a full ball through the off-side for one and Jurel takes a single down to long-on.

Flighted and some turn for Nuwantha as Pant does well to adjust as he taps it on the off-side.

In the next over, Pant takes another blow on the right shoulder after he tries to avoid the incoming short ball from Fernando. He took his eye off the ball early and tried to get out of the way but the ball came in and struck on the right shoulder where he was hit in the pacer's previous over.

This is the third blow for Pant as he struggles against the bouncers from the Sri Lankan pacers.

Another bouncer to end the over, but this time it is high and Pant easily ducks under it.

Pant uses his feet to drive the first ball through the covers for a single and Jurel hits the third ball down to long-on for one.

Turn and bounce for Nuwantha as Pant offers no shot to the ball pitched wide of the stumps.

Lahiru Kumara continues from the other end. Jurel pulls the first ball to deep square leg for a single. Pant opens the face of the bat and steers the short ball wide of gully for two runs and pulls the next for a single.

He has not looked in any sort of discomfort so far, playing all his shots.

Kumara overpitches as Jurel plays a beautiful straight drive past mid-on for a four and then stretches forward for another confident block and takes one off the last ball.

Nuwantha continues as the two Indian batters pick three easy singles as India continue to keep the runs coming.

Change in the bowling as Fernando replaces Kumara. He starts with a short ball which Jurel pulls to fine leg for a single.

A good short ball from Fernando as Pant opts to leave the short ball which strikes him on the shoulder and falls very close to the stumps. A close shave for Pant as the ball missed the stumps by a whisker, hitting the stump mic placed behind the wicket.

Another short ball but this time Pant easily pulls it for a single and Jurel leaves the last ball.

Jurel looking quite solid with his defence. He scored a fifty in the previous Test and in this match too he has been quite assured with his footwork.

He pulls Kumara for a single before Pant is happy to offer no shot to a bouncer wide of the stumps.

Kumara bowls another bouncer this time it goes down the leg side as Pant pulls but misses.

Pant swivels and pulls the next ball powerfully over fine leg for a six, sending the ball flying out of the stadium.

Despite his injury, Pant not willing to take a step back against the fast bowlers, looking to take on the short balls.

The last ball is short and wide as Pant punches it to deep point for one.

It will be interesting to see how the Sri Lankan pacers bowl to Pant. He was struck on the arm after missing the pull shot which forced him to retire. Surely, he will be getting a few short balls directed at his body.

Jurel hits Kumara through the off-side for a single bringing Pant on strike.

Pant flicks the full delivery on the stumps to deep square leg for one, his run of the day.

Jurel plays a nice free-flowing drive off the last ball but can't beat the fielder in the covers.

Fernando starts his new over with a slower ball to Pant who is happy to defend followed by a bouncer which he leaves.

He hits the next in the gap through the covers for a single and Jurel takes one off the last ball to deep square leg for one.

Fast bowler Asitha Fernando from the other end. Jurel flicks the first ball in the gap at midwicket for two runs but misses the shot off the next.

Jurel misses out on a few runs as a cracking straight drive hits the stumps at the other end.

He takes on the short ball, pulling it to fine leg for one.

Fernando strikes the early blow for Sri Lanka on Day 2 dismissing Jain for six.

The left-hander is all squared up by a quick short ball as he attempts to clip it on the leg side but gets the leading edge. Kamil Mishara at gully takes a superb catch diving full length to his left at gully.

Rishabh Pant returns to the crease at No 8. He offers no shot to the last ball which is down the leg side.

Fernando has been excellent with the ball for Sri Lanka, with figures of 4/49 in 17 overs.

Rishabh Pant is all set to bat on the second day. He did the warm ups in the morning session and had a hit with the bat to dispel all doubts about his injury.

He will walk in to bat at the fall of the next Indian wicket. Pant will resume his batting on three.

For now, India will hope that Jurel and Jain play out the first hour before they change gears and look to score runs.

Jain has excelled with both bat and ball in first class cricket. The Madhya Pradesh all-rounder has picked up 188 wickets in 54 first class games with 10 five-wicket hauls, while scoring 2223 runs at an average of 31.75 with two centuries and 14 fifties.

Welcome to the coverage of Day 2 of the second and final Test between India and Sri Lanka in Colombo on Monday.

India will be hoping to looking to continue their good showing with the bat and post a big total on the second day.

Dhruv Jurel was unbeaten on seven and debutant Saransh Jain on four at stumps on Day 1.

India finished the opening day on 300/5 courtesy of Devdutt Padikkal's 117 -- his second century in a row and half-century from captain Shubman Gill.

For Sri Lanka, pacer Asitha Fernando picked up 3/36 to help the hosts keep India in check.

India suffered a blow when wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant was forced to retire with injury after getting struck on his left arm.

He missed the pull shot off pacer Lahiru Kumara and was hit on the left arm, forcing him to leave the field in pain.

Pant, who made three off 15 balls, walked off the pitch with the physiotherapist in the 58th over of the innings.

But he is expected to bat on Day 2 with India keen consolidate on their good showing with the bat on the opening day.
