Akash Deep continues and Pope greets him with a boundary. Fullish delivery straying onto his hips and Pope flicks it fine. 100-run partnership is up between Root and Pope.

Pope then drags a fullish delivery to mid-wicket and picks up a brace.

Two dots later, Pope nudges one to deep backward point and gets a single.

A single off the final delivery. 7 come off it.

Ravindra Jadeja comes into the attack. Starts off with two dots before Pope opens his bat face and nudges one to square of the wicket for a single.

Root then picks up a single by drives one straight to the mid-off fielder. Reddy fumbles it.

Two dots to follow as just two runs come off Jadeja's first over.

Spin from both ends as Washington Sundar comes into the attack. Root is on strike. After playing out a dot ball, he punches one to deep mid-wicket and gets off the strike.

Pope defends the next three deliveries before dabbing one to backward point for a single. Just two off Sundar's first over.

That is the final over before Tea on Day 1. The session belongs to the hosts as they kept the scoreboard ticking without trying any risky shots. Credit to Root (54 off 109 ball, 7x4) and Pope (44 off 103 balls, 4x4) who played with patience to blunt the Indian attack after the loss of both openers.
