Sevanthi Sevanthi

If you are not convinced that a film can become successful purely on the strength of its songs, consider Sevanthi Sevanthi, which had Vijaya Raghavendra and Ramya in the lead.

Director S. Narayan tried a new format of music for this film, selecting popular folk songs and getting music director S A Raj Kumar to tune them afresh. The folk songs, that have been popular for centuries, struck a chord with listeners thanks to the composer's fresh re-imagining, and male lead Vijaya Raghavendra himself crooned for Jaaji Mallige Hoovu, one of the most popular songs in a popular soundtrack.

The film was released a week after Kannada movie icon Dr. Raj Kumar's death, and failed to get any kind of initial. It was in fact deemed a washout after the first three weeks of its run.

Gradually, however, word came from the interiors that people liked the music and were flocking to the theatres. Then the major centers began picking up, and the film went on to gain unexpected success.

The film confirmed Ramya's stature as the topmost female star in Kannada, and also gave a new lease of life to Vijaya Raghavendra. It also ensured that S Narayan is one of the best directors in the Kannada industry now.
