21:40 Bihar BJP's 2-day meet from Sat amid Nitish's move
Amid the possibility of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar making yet another switch to the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance, the BJP has called its state executive meeting tomorrow and the day after, the sources said.
The meeting is likely to be held on January 27 and 28.
According to the sources, the party's Bihar in-charge Vinod Tawde will go to Patna on Saturday.
If reports are to be believed, the stage seems to be set for Janata Dal-United supremo Nitish Kumar to return to the BJP-led NDA again.
If Nitish switches sides, this will mark the fourth time in just over a decade that he would do it.
Nitish's shift would deal a severe blow to the ruling Mahagathbandhan (grand alliance) in Bihar as well as the Opposition INDIA bloc at the national level that was formed to take on the BJP-led Centre in 2024 Lok Sabha polls. -- ANI

18:28 Delhi AQI severe for second time in 3 days, Centre delays stricter curbs
The Centre on Friday decided to delay implementation of stricter measures to curb pollution in Delhi-NCR despite the 24-hour average AQI in Delhi breaching the 400-mark for the second time in three days.
Delhi's 24-hour average Air Quality Index stood at 409 at 4 pm, a level requiring authorities to invoke stricter curbs under Stage III of the Centre's Graded Response Action Plan to control air pollution.
The CAQM sub-committee for operationalisation of GRAP convened an emergency meeting and took stock of the air quality situation, projected AQI and meteorological forecasts, a statement said.
According to the India Meteorological Department and the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, a dip in temperature and foggy weather allowed accumulation of pollutants in Delhi on Friday.
Forecasts by the IMD and the IITM suggest an improvement in Delhi's air quality from Friday itself.
It is expected to be in the 'very poor' category in the coming days, the statement said. -- PTI
18:11 Bihar govt may fall in day or two, says BJP ally
Bharatiya Janata Party ally and Hindustani Awam Morcha-Secular leader Santosh Kumar Suman said on Friday that the Bihar government may fall in a day or two, amid indications that Chief Minister Nitish Kumar could snap ties with the INDIA bloc and return to the NDA.
Suman, who is an MLC and son of former Bihar chief minister Jitan Ram Manjhi, said the BJP has so far not categorically told his party about any impending alliance with the JD-U, which is headed by Kumar.
"It appears to me that this government will fall in a day or two," he told PTI.
Amid deepening fissures in Kumar's ties with the RJD and the Congress, BJP leaders have indicated that they are open to tie up with him again.
Earlier in the day, BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi said doors are never permanently closed to anyone in politics.
He told reporters, "As far as Kumar or the JD-U are concerned, doors are never permanently closed in politics. Closed doors open when the time comes but whether they will open or not is for our central leadership to decide."
The BJP has been keeping in touch with its Bihar allies, including Manjhi, Chirag Paswan, Upendra Kushwaha and Union Minister Pashupati Kumar Paras, amid evolving political developments in the state.
Manjhi's party has four MLAs who could play a critical role in the balance of power in the state.
17:49 PM behaving like a puppet in the hands of RSS: Kharge
Charging the Prime Minister Narendra Modi with behaving like a puppet in the hands of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, Congress President M Mallikarjun Kharge on Friday accused the organisation and the Bharatiya Janata Party of conspiring to distort the Constitution.
He also called upon Congressmen and party leaders to face the upcoming Lok Sabha polls with unity and protect the Constitution and democracy.
The Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha was speaking after unfurling the national tricolour at the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee office here on the occasion of Republic Day.
"Probably if there was no Constitution for this country, it would not have been possible for us to save democracy. With lots of effort, leaders of our freedom struggle and the Constituent Assembly members gave this country the Constitution," Kharge said.
Addressing Congress workers and leaders, he said the Constitution contains important principles like equality, fraternity, secularism and justice.
"The RSS and BJP are conspiring to distort this Constitution and to make changes to it. All efforts are being made by the BJP to destroy or weaken our autonomous bodies one by one. Especially as Modi is behaving like a puppet in the hands of RSS, our judiciary or our secularism is facing the brunt," he added.
State Congress President D K Shivakumar, who is also the Deputy Chief Minister, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and other senior party leaders were present.
The Congress party has fought for the freedom of the country, the AICC chief said, but the BJP is claiming to be the "only saviours" of this country. They speak about patriotism and are projecting to the youth that only they are true patriots, and rest all are traitors.
Recalling the struggle by the Congress and several of its stalwarts including Mahatma Gandhi in getting freedom for India, he said, "but today the BJP, the Prime Minister and Home Minister (Amit Shah) are making all efforts to make it the puppet in their hands. So it is important for us to save our freedom and Constitution for the good future of our younger generation." -- PTI
17:35 Neither happy nor unhappy: Giriraj on Nitish's return to BJP
Union Minister Giriraj Singh on Friday said he is neither happy nor unhappy about the possibility of the Nitish Kumar-led Janaat Dal-United reviving its ties with the Bharatiya Janata Party as the Bihar chief minister's equations with INDIA bloc partners turn sour.
Amid speculation that Kumar -- the JD-U chief -- could pull out of the Mahagathbandhan in Bihar and return to the National Democratic Alliance, Singh was asked by reporters if he would welcome his return as an ally.
"I am not welcoming nor am I against anyone. It is the decision of the central leadership. Whatever decision they take, I am sure it will be in the interest of the state and the party," he said.
Asked if he was happy about the possibility of a fresh BJP-JDU alliance, Singh said, "I am neither happy nor unhappy. I am a worker of the party, I will abide by whatever decision is taken."
He also attacked the INDIA bloc, calling the alliance "opportunistic".
"There is no INDIA alliance anymore. It was an opportunistic alliance. They were working against Sanatan Dharma and the Congress was the anchor," he said.
Singh also refused to answer if the BJP will benefit from an alliance with the JD-U in Bihar.
"I am not an analyst, I am a worker. A workers' job is to follow the orders of the party," he said. -- PTI

16:12 Firmly with INDIA bloc but...: Nitish's JD-U
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's Janata Dal-United on Friday asserted that the party was "firmly with INDIA coalition" but wanted the Congress to do "introspection" with regard to alliance partners and sharing of seats.
State JD-U president Umesh Singh Kushwaha made the statement, refuting rumours that his party, headed by the chief minister, was thinking of a return to the Bharatiya Janata Party-led NDA.
"All is well in Bihar's ruling Mahagathbandhan and the media speculations are driven by some agenda," Kushwaha told reporters.
He also said, "I met the CM yesterday as well as today. It is a routine affair. There is no truth in the rumours doing the rounds. We also reject the rumours that party MLAs have been asked to rush to Patna".
He also made light of Kumar and his deputy Tejashwi Yadav, who is in RJD, sitting far from each other at the Republic Day parade, asserting that "we are firmly with INDIA coalition".
Kushwaha, however, said, "We want the Congress, which is our alliance partner, to do some introspection with regard to its stance towards other constituents and sharing of seats. Our leader Nitish Kumar has for long been stressing on the need for early finalisation of seat-sharing deal so that we could concentrate on Lok Sabha polls".
The statement of the JD-U leader came in the backdrop of two opposition bloc INDIA partners, the TMC and the AAP, ruling out the possibility of a truck with the Congress in West Bengal and Punjab respectively.
To a pointed query about his party's return to the NDA, which it had junked less than two years ago, the JD-U leader said, "these are rumours spread by those with some agenda".
Kushwaha was also asked about social media posts of Rohini Acharya, daughter of RJD supremo Lalu Prasad, in which she appeared to have taken a swipe at Kumar.
The JD-U leader replied, "We take no notice of that because Rohini Acharya is not an RJD office-bearer".
Meanwhile, when asked about the delay in seat-sharing in the opposition bloc INDIA, state Congress president Akhilesh Prasad Singh asked, "why nobody asks about the BJP-led NDA? They, too are yet to sort out sharing of seats with allies".
Replying to another query, he said, "Nitish Kumar is our leader in Bihar. I have no idea from where rumours of his going back to NDA have emanated." -- PTI
15:53 No going back on Maratha quota stir: Jarange
Maratha quota leader Manoj Jarange on Friday asserted that he won't abandon his agitation midway till the community is granted reservation in government jobs and education, while Maharashtra minister Deepak Kesarkar said the activist's demands have been accepted.
Jarange was addressing protesters at Shivaji Chowk in the Vashi area of neighbouring Navi Mumbai after a meeting with a government delegation.
The activist said the delegation has given him some documents which he will discuss with his supporters to announce their future course of action.
"There is no going back on the agitation till we get reservation," he asserted.
The government is trying to persuade Jarange not to proceed to Mumbai.
State education minister Deepak Kesarkar told reporters that Jarange's demands have been accepted and they will be fulfilled as per government procedure.
So far, 37 lakh Kunbi certificates have been given and the number will go up to 50 lakh, he said.
Earlier, the Maratha quota leader reached Navi Mumbai with thousands of supporters to push for reservation for the Maratha community.
Jarange and other Maratha activists reached the Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC) on the outskirts of Mumbai around 5 am by bikes, cars, jeeps, tempos and trucks.
As per his plan, Jarange, along with his supporters, will begin his hunger strike at Azad Maidan on Friday. The protesters are demanding Kunbi (OBC) status to the Maratha community.
Despite the Mumbai Police issuing a notice to him denying him permission to hold a hunger strike in the city, Jarange announced on Thursday that he will reach Azad Maidan in south Mumbai on January 26.
In a notice issued under section 149 of the Criminal Procedure Code that enables the police to prevent cognisable offences, the police said, Mumbai is the financial capital of the country and various financial institutions, international advocacy and other financial centers are working in Mumbai.

The 45-day devotional music festival dedicated to Lord Ram that begins on Friday will conclude on March 10.

"The architect and coordinator of this programme on behalf of the trust is Yatindra Mishra and the curation has been supported by the Sangeet Natak Akademi in Delhi," the trust member said.

15:07 Doors are never...: BJP leader on Nitish's return
Bharatiya Janata Party leader Sushil Kumar Modi on Friday said doors are never permanently closed to anyone in politics amid indications that Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar may revive ties with his former ally as his equations with INDIA bloc partners turn sour.
Sources in both the BJP and the Janata Dal-United suggested such a possibility but it remained unclear if Kumar, the unquestioned leader of his party, has finalised a deal with the BJP top brass.
Speaking to reporters, Modi said, "As far as Kumar or the JD-U are concerned, doors are never permanently closed in politics. Closed doors open when the time comes but whether they will open or not is for our central leadership to decide."
After Kumar snapped his ties with the BJP in 2022, the party maintained that its doors were permanently closed to Bihar's longest-serving chief minister but its leaders have turned more conciliatory of late as the INDIA bloc lurches from one internal crisis to another.
Modi was deputy chief minister for a long time in governments headed by Kumar but was not repeated when the BJP-JDU alliance came to power after the 2020 assembly polls.
However, he has been part of the confabulations by the BJP top brass this time, in an indication that the seasoned politician may be trusted with a key responsibility if the two parties join hands again.
The Rajya Sabha MP enjoyed warm relations with Kumar when they were together but turned a staunch critic after the JD-U leader dumped the BJP for a second time in 2022.
The BJP has been in touch with its Bihar allies, including Chirag Paswan and former chief minister Jitan Ram Manjhi, over the developments in the state but they have not been given a clear idea about the possibility of Kumar's return to their fold, the sources said. -- PTI

14:33 Sitharaman 2nd FM to present budget 6 times in a row
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will equal the record of former Prime Minister Morarji Desai when she presents her sixth straight budget on February 1.
Sitharaman, the first full-time woman finance minister of the country, has presented five full budgets since July 2019 and will present an interim or vote-on-account budget next week.
With the presentation of interim budget on February 1, Sitharaman will surpass the records of her predecessors like Manmohan Singh, Arun Jaitley, P Chidambaram, and Yashwant Sinha, who had presented five budgets in a row.
Desai, as finance minister, had presented five annual budgets and one interim budget between 1959-1964. The interim budget 2024-25 to be presented by Sitharaman on February 1, will be a vote-on-account that will give the government authority to spend certain sums of money till a new government comes to office after the April-May general elections.
As the Parliamentary elections are due, Sitharaman's interim budget may not contain any major policy changes. Speaking at an industry event last month, Sitharaman had ruled out any "spectacular announcement" in the interim budget, saying it would just be a vote-on-account before the general elections.
A vote-on-account, once approved by Parliament, will authorise the government to withdraw money from the Consolidated Fund of India on pro-rata basis to meet expenditure for the April-July period.
The new government, which is likely to be formed around June, will come up with a final budget for 2024-25 sometime in July. Usually, interim budgets do not contain major policy announcements, but nothing stops the government from taking steps which are necessary to deal with the urgent issues facing the economy.
After the Modi government came to power in 2014, Arun Jaitley took charge of the finance ministry and presented five budgets in a row from 2014-15 to 2018-19. It was in 2017, that Jaitley departed from the colonial-era tradition of presenting budget on the last working day of February to 1st of the month.
Piyush Goyal, who was holding the additional charge of the ministry due to ill health of Jaitley, presented the interim budget for 2019-20 on February 1, 2019. Goyal had hiked standard deduction for salaried taxpayers by Rs 10,000 to Rs 50,000. Also, the tax rebate for taxpayers whose annual taxable income did not exceed Rs 5 lakh was increased from Rs 2,500 to Rs 12,500.
After the 2019 general elections, in the Modi 2.0 Government, Sitharaman was given the charge of the finance portfolio. She became the second woman to have presented budget after Indira Gandhi, who had presented the budget for financial year 1970-71. -- PTI

Co-founder of AltNews, Zubair was presented the award by Stalin at the 75th Republic Day celebrations here. The government said in March 2023, claims were made in social media that "migrant workers were being attacked in Tamil Nadu."

"Thus, he stopped the spread of rumours against Tamil Nadu and acted to prevent violence caused by caste, religion, race and language," in the state, the government said in the citation.
