Barack Obama's story is an American story that reflects a life of struggle, opportunity and responsibility -- like those faced by Americans everyday. The opening night of the Democratic Convention on Monday will 'highlight Barack's life story, his commitment to change, and the voices of Americans who are calling for a new direction for this country,' the Democratic National Convention Committee has said.
The first night, which will focus on the theme 'One Nation', will be headlined at prime time by Obama's wife Michelle and will also include an emotional tribute to Senator Edward M Kennedy -- Obama's mentor -- who is recuperating after being diagnosed with a cancerous brain tumor. Former President Jimmy Carter and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi are among the other speakers.
Convention co-chair, Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius said, "From Monday through Thursday, our Convention programme will highlight the people of this country who want positive change and who believe Barack Obama is the leader who will listen to their concerns and get our country moving in the right direction again."
