Nehru visited the United States thrice. These two pictures were taken during his last visit, in 1961. In one photograph, John F Kennedy, who would die six months and five days before Nehru, points out something to the Indian prime minister during a stroll in the White House garden. The other picture shows Jacqueline Kennedy walking arm in arm with Nehru as they leave a helicopter and cross the lawn to the White House.
It was in 1961 that the first group of Peace Corps volunteers, a programme Kennedy initiated, arrived in India. For 13 years after that, batches of volunteers worked on projects in agriculture, health, family planning, education and small industries.
