In the first picture to the left, we see President Harry S Truman greeting Nehru, his daughter Indira Gandhi and sister Vijayalakshmi Pandit, when the prime minister visited the US for the first time in 1949. In Washington, Nehru said, 'Many of us have grown up in admiration of the objectives which have made the US great... What is required is a true understanding and appreciation of each other even where we differ. Out of understanding grows fruitful cooperation in the pursuit of common ideals.'
