These women run their countries
Vaira Vike-Freiberga
Born in 1937, Vaira Vike-Freiberga is the current and first female President of Latvia. She was first elected in 1999, then in 2003.
Her parents were World War II refugees who left Latvia in 1944 and travelled between Germany, Morocco and Canada. Their daughter received her Ph.D. in psychology in 1965, from a Canadian university, and then taught psychology at the University of Montreal for an astonishing 33 years.
Vike-Freiberga was not originally a candidate for the presidentship, but, when parliament failed to elect a president in the first round, she was put up as a compromise candidate. She won.
