These women run their countries

Mary McAleese

Mary Patricia McAleese was a journalist, academic and barrister before being elected the eighth, and current, President of Ireland.

Born in 1951, she was first elected to the post in 1997, then re-elected without contest to another seven-year term in 2004.

What makes McAleese interesting is the list of titles she has held, from Director of Channel 4 Television and Director of Northern Ireland Electricity, to Director of Royal Group of Hospitals Trust and Founder Member of the Irish Commission for Prisoners Overseas. She was also elected Pro-Vice Chancellor of Queen's University, Belfast, in 1994 -- the first woman to hold the position.
